Celebrating Easter Building Blocks to Success
30 Main St. PO Box 2188 Rapid City, SD 57709 605-341-2844 Fax:605-718-2332 [email protected] April 2015 Celebrating Easter Easter is probably the most important Holiday in the Christian Calendar, yet for some reason it does not receive the attention that is lavished upon Christmas. Not even from the secular world. The culmination of God’s work through Jesus does not result in an end, but a beginning. Christ’s resurrection brings new life and hope for eternity. How appropriate that we celebrate this momentous occasion as the leaves reappear on the trees. Cornerstone strives to be a channel through which lives are made new in Christ. While we meet physical and emotional needs, our ultimate goal is to meet the needs of the individual at the spiritual level through healing that is only possible through a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is our honor and privilege to be a part of that kind of work. Soon you will see Cornerstone integrate new programs for discipleship and life skills, as well as services inside the chapel. In 2014 we more than doubled the number of people we were able to place into stable housing situations, this came on the heels of ministry training for all staff. This training continues to thrive and affect the guests. May this Easter bring you peace and great joy! Thank you for your continued support of Cornerstone Rescue Mission! Tom Golden, Executive Director Building Blocks to Success There’s an old adage that says you can’t buy time. However, today you have the opportunity to do exactly that-- buy time. You can do this by sponsoring a child from Dear One’s Child Care. We care for the youngest members of our society affected by homelessness -- its children. Up to 20 children from age 4 weeks to 12 years old. Recently a young mother, let’s call her Jane, came to Dear Ones to apply for childcare. This mother wanted and needed to work but first had to find childcare for her daughter. Because she could not afford to pay for her care she was referred to The Department of Social Services to apply for Child Care Assistance. She then found that she was not eligible for assistance because she was not employed. Thus she found herself stuck in a “Catch 22”. No job, no childcare. No childcare, no job. When you sponsor a child for any period of time you will allow a family to move forward in life by providing Building Blocks to Success. The costs for sponsorship are as follows: One Hour.................................. $3.15 One Month........................... $504.00 One Day.................................. $25.20 One Year..............................$6048.00 One Week............................. $126.00 It’s up to you! The sponsorship funds created by Building Blocks to Success will allow Dear Ones the ability to provide childcare for those families who fall through the cracks and cannot afford to pay on their own. Please help by using the pink envelope enclosed and put Building Blocks in the memo of your check and sponsor a child today. Through the Eyes of a Child Each morning as we walk through the door of Dear Ones Child Care to begin the work day, we are transported to another world. The wonderful new and exciting world through the eyes of a child. We are welcomed with joyous greetings calling our name, all at once each little voice is vying for attention to share some special bit of news. Little arms wrap around legs hugging tightly as if we’ve been away for years! It brings such joy walking into a room filled with such happiness, laughter and unconditional love. It’s a great way to start the day. If only every adult could have that same feeling as they started their work day! Meal times are an important time to feed both our bodies and our souls as the children share their stories of things that are important to them. The sighting of a fire truck, the silly thing that their pet did, the spaghetti that was served for supper or the bird they saw on their way here. Each of these things are new and exciting. The Lord provided us with such an amazingly beautiful world. It’s time that we stop and enjoy it as we give thanks just as the children do as they learn about the world around them. Playtime is when the learning really takes place. Exploring and learning seem to go hand in hand, literally hand in hand. Sometimes all it takes is sitting next to a child and encouraging them to try something new. To brave those steps up to the top of the slide and then actually slide on their own. It’s so amazing to see one child cheering on another child as they attempt a new skill. That success is so much richer when it is recognized by their peers. Battles with buttons, fighting with zippers and those dreaded shoelaces seem to challenge each little heart and hand as they begin those steps to potty training. There are stickers to earn with each attempt as we coach them along each step and then cheer each successful trip to the bathroom. Pride in their accomplishment grows with each success as they master this skill and can go all by themselves! Taking turns and waiting in line for your turn are always a challenge but it is a part of life and this lesson too must be taught. Understanding that it is nearly impossible for everyone to safely exit through the same doorway at the same time (without someone needing a bandage or an ice pack that is). As a child learns that they too will become line leader they learn patience, understanding and how to be safe. It allows them to be understanding and empathetic because they remember when it wasn’t their turn. All in all, the lessons that we teach are in equal measure to the lessons learned. One of the greatest lessons learned is that the world is much different when viewed through the eyes of a child and it’s a view that we look forward to each and every day! Please consider looking at the bottom of the front page and sponsor a child for a day or more. It would make a big difference in that child’s life and that of their family. Thank you! 2015 Bird and Bison Banquet Saturday March 7, the Cornerstone Rescue Mission held its annual Bird and Bison Banquet at the La Croix Hall in the Civic Center. Approximately 350 people attended, enjoying the evening’s events -- silent auction, great food, the raffle, and the fabulous deals at the Cornerstone Thrift Store Boutique. Special recognition was given to Dick McConnell for 25 years of service to the Cornerstone Rescue Mission. He has served on the Board of Directors since 1990, and holds an office on the Board. His faithfulness as a Board member is admirable. He is a steadfast champion for the guests we serve. He assists with construction projects given his long history as a professional architect. Dick provided valuable insight on the recently remodeled kitchen at the mission and now is helping with the new Women and Children’s Home. Also recognized were Doug and Abbie Thrash for volunteering their time with the Thrift Store and putting on the Thrift Store Boutique for six consecutive years. Doug also served on the Cornerstone Board of Directors for many years. We are grateful to this couple who give so tirelessly to the Cornerstone Rescue Mission. Sam Fischer & Dick McConnell Tom Golden and Dou g & Abbie Thrash Elia Moreno of Communication Across Barriers shared her experiences working with the homeless and needy. Elia also volunteered to become homeless for three days and shared a touching story of her experiences during that time. She complimented Cornerstone’s efforts stating that when she toured the mission during meal time it felt like home. A Special Thank you to all the Bird and Bison Banquet Sponsors, and the merchants and churches who donated silent auction and Elia Moreno raffle items. We also want to thank the many wonderful people who attended and helped make this a successful event.
