The earth was without form and void, and darkness was The Way upon the face of the deep; and the wind of Faith of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said..." These opening words of the book of Genesis are deeply familiar to us. There is no ambiguity in the starting point of the whole story of the creation and the redemption of the universe: be‐ fore any thing existed, there was God, and God created all that is, and he created it out of love. He also redeems it out of love. This is the basis of God's relationship with the whole created order, and with the human beings who have a unique role in that order. The Church Fathers, the great early pastor‐theologians of the church, read the first verses of Genesis as revealing God's tri‐une nature. God the Father creates; he creates through his word ("God said...") who becomes flesh as his Son, and the Holy Spirit moves through creation like a wind. Thus, from the first moment of creation, the fullness of God's presence, One God in three persons, is made known in creation. Our daily experience of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in our lives of worship, work, and witness also contains a beautiful awareness that without God, nothing would exist, and we would cease to be. Such is God's love for us that he constantly holds us in the bond of his creative love. We tend not to think of the Holy Spirit as a person, though he very much is a person. At the same time, our sense of the Spirit is often and rightly tied to this initial image of wind, blowing across the sea and the earth. Interestingly, in both Hebrew (in which the Old Testament was written) and Greek (in which the New Testament was written) the word for Spirit also means "breath," "wind," and "life‐force." These meanings become in fact almost interchangeable when we think of the air that we breathe into our lungs to give us life, the refreshing wind raising the leaves on a beautiful Fall day‐‐and the way the Holy Spirit breathes life into us every moment of every day. Even at the consecration of the ele‐ ments in Mass, we call upon the Holy Spirit to make the elements holy "that they may become for us the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ." There is nothing more refreshing than the clean, cool, dry breezes of Autumn to refresh us body and soul, the life‐giving experience of breath‐ ing out the old, stale air and breathing in the fresh new air. So it is with the Holy Spirit, constantly breathing into our bodies and souls, refreshing our lives in Christ, giving us the life‐force of God himself to do the work Jesus has given us to do. ~ Fr John David Bulletin notices and advertising: All information must be sent to the parish office no later than 8AM on Mondays.
