Scriptural Reflection for the Week
“…, how much more will the Father give the Holy Spirit to
those who ask him.” (see Luke 11:1-13) In these words of
Jesus, the Son of God, we have another indication of the
Holy Trinity; that there are three Persons in one God. We
believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy
Spirit. Why do we believe this? Because this is what Jesus
has just revealed in these words of His. A second point has
to do with what we pray for in life. We may pray for health
and good fortune – for so called material benefit. But Jesus
wants to teach us to be more concerned with obtaining spiritual gifts - none more spiritual than the Holy Spirit Himself!
Why this emphasis? We may have good health one day and
be in bad health the next day. We may live in an apartment
one day and our own home the next day. We may have no
savings in the bank one day and an abundance the next
day. But in all cases what we need to have is the Holy Spirit
to teach us the right way to live no matter we have health,
home, money or not! So when you pray, you now know
what to pray for, or better who to pray for- pray for the Father to give you the Holy Spirit Himself, why? Because Jesus said He would!

Reflection
Jesus is describing God’s immeasurable generosity
when He says in today’s gospel, “Whoever asks,
receives; whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is
admitted.” But it should also be the description of us
as Christian stewards - those seeking to follow
Christ by using our gifts in service to others.
Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards who embrace
God’s mercy, striving to make God’s mercy visible in
our world by sharing it with others.

BUILDING COMMUNITY AT MASS

The institution of the Eucharist, the day before he died, was the
symbolic recapitulation of Jesus’ life which reached completion in the
total self-gift of himself by dying on the cross. He commanded his
disciples to “do this in memory of me”, and entrusted them with the
task of making this last day become a reality in their lives until he will
come again in glory to transform the whole universe into the new
heaven and the new earth where there will be the perfect love relationship between God and human beings, and among human beings.
The Church is the community that, following in the footsteps of those
first disciples and apostles, continues down the centuries to fulfill this
mission in the world. Luke writes, the disciples began to celebrate
the Eucharist - the Breaking of Bread’ - very soon after Pentecost.
Immediately after he tells us about the coming of the Holy Spirit and
Peter’s preaching to the people. They devoted themselves to the
apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the
prayers (Acts 2:42). Paul in 1 Corinthians 11 and Matthew, Mark and
Luke in their gospels tell us about the institution of the Eucharist at
the Last Supper.
When we celebrate the Eucharist we proclaim the great redemptive
act of Christ and we commit ourselves to continue his work in the
world by living a life of love and sharing. This is what the early
Christians did in order to show their identity. They recognized the
Lord in the breaking of the Bread and they were recognized as
Christians by their sharing of the bread (Acts 2, 44-47) The Eucharist, therefore, was an act by which they expressed their religious
identity, an identity based on their relationship to God and to their
fellow human beings.
TheEucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life” (Lumen
Gentium no. 11). In the Eucharistic Liturgy, we encounter God’s
presence in personal and profound ways. But the Eucharist is also
social, as Pope Benedict XVI reminds us in Deus Caritas Est (God Is
Love): “A Eucharist which does not pass over into the concrete
practice of love is intrinsically fragmented” (no. 14). The Eucharist,
celebrated as a community, teaches us about human dignity, calls us
to right relationship with God, ourselves, and others. As the Body of
Christ, it sends us on mission to help transform our communities,
neighborhoods, and world. Church teaching, rooted in both Scripture
and Tradition, emphasizes both the personal and social natures of
the Eucharist. This guide highlights Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, and
Benedict XVI’s writings about the social nature of the Eucharist.
Their words challenge and move us to encounter Christ in the
Eucharist in ways both personal and social.
St. Pope John Paul II wrote that our ability to go and do likewise in
imitation of Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet is the “criterion by
which the authenticity of our Eucharistic celebrations is
judged” (Mane Nobiscum Domine no. 28). “Eucharistic worship,” he
says, is the expression of “the love that springs up within us from the
Eucharist”—that love which is “the authentic and deepest characteristic of the Christian vocation”.
The Eucharist “increases, rather than lessens, our sense of responsibility for the world today.” Christ in the Eucharist calls us to build “a
more human world, a world fully in harmony with God’s
plan” (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, no. 20). Filled with awe for all we
have received in Christ’s self-gift, we respond with service and works
of charity. We act to transform unjust structures, policies, and laws
that degrade human life and dignity.
Our Eucharistic spirituality is the core of our life. We go forth from
the experience of giving ourselves at the Altar of Christ to giving
ourselves to the world around us in ministry. We share communion
at the Table of the Lord so that we may build community in the
brokenness that is so much present in the world.

God our Father, be with us on our pilgrim journey of faith.
Give us the grace and courage to step forward
in faith and hope on the road ahead.
Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see your face in
all those we encounter.
Open our ears to hear your voice in those
who are often ignored.
Open our hearts that we might be faithful disciples of
mercy and truth.
Holy Spirit, transform us. Empower us to give of
ourselves to the poor;
to welcome the lost; to forgive those who hurt us;
to comfort those who suffer and are marginalized.
Bless those who travel on mission from the
United States of America to Kraków
in Poland, Land of Divine Mercy, to join the universal
Church for World Youth Day.
Bless, too, those who celebrate stateside,
united in faith and joy.
Like the disciples who journeyed up the mountain to
witness the Transfiguration,
may this experience be an encounter that strengthens us
for our work in the world.
Through the intercession of Mary, the Immaculate
Conception, patroness of our nation, may we
be worthy witnesses of our faith, humble representatives
of our country, and inspired missionaries bringing peace,
hope, and mercy into our communities. Amen.

Fatima visionary predicted 'final battle'
would be over marriage, family

Mexico City, Mexico, Jul 8, 2016 / 03:33 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Sister Lucia dos Santos, one of the
three children who witnessed the Marian apparitions at Fatima, died in 2005. But before her death,
she predicted that the final battle between Christ and Satan would be over marriage and the family.
So says Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, who reports that the visionary sent him a letter with this prediction
when he was Archbishop of Bologna, Italy.
This reported statement by Sister Lucia, expressed during the pontificate of Saint John Paul II, was
recently revisited by the Desde la Fe (From the Faith) weekly of the Archdiocese of Mexico, in the
midst of the debate generated by President Enrique Pena Nieto, who announced his intention to promote gay marriage in this country.
The Mexican weekly recalled the statements that Cardinal Caffarra made to the Italian press in 2008,
three years after the death of Sister Lucia. On February 16, 2008, the Italian cardinal had celebrated
a Mass at the tomb of Padre Pio, after which he gave an interview with Tele Radio Padre Pio. He was
asked about the prophecy of Sister Lucia dos Santos that speaks about “the final battle between the
Lord and the kingdom of Satan.”
Cardinal Caffarra explained that Saint John Paul II had commissioned him to plan and establish the
Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. At the beginning of this work, the cardinal
wrote a letter to Sister Lucia of Fatima through her bishop, since he could not do it directly.
“Inexplicably, since I did not expect a reply, seeing as I had only asked for her prayers, I received a
long letter with her signature, which is now in the archives of the Institute,” the Italian cardinal said.
“In that letter we find written: ‘The final battle between the Lord and the kingdom of Satan will be
about Marriage and the Family.’ Don't be afraid, she added, because whoever works for the sanctity
of Marriage and the Family will always be fought against and opposed in every way, because this is
the decisive issue. Then she concluded: ‘nevertheless, Our Lady has already crushed his head’.”
Cardinal Caffarra added that “speaking again with John Paul II, you could feel that the family was the
core, since it has to do with the supporting pillar of creation, the truth of the relationship between
man and woman, between the generations. If the foundational pillar is damaged, the entire building
collapses and we're seeing this now, because we are right at this point and we know it.”
“And I am moved when I read the best biographies of Padre Pio,” the cardinal concluded, “about how
this man was so attentive to the sanctity of marriage and the holiness of the spouses, even with
justifiable rigor at times.”
His mother rejected an abortion – now,
this priest helped her meet the Pope

thalidomide sleeping pill craze that Sarah Figueiredo became pregnant with
her fourth and last child, Anthony.
Developed after the Second World War and found not only to help with
sleeplessness but also to alleviate morning sickness for expectant mothers,
thalidomide was widely prescribed by doctors across the world to their
pregnant patients as a safe drug to use. Sarah, who was raising her young
family in Nairobi at the time, was one of the expectant mothers prescribed
the drug. It wasn’t until 1961 that thalidomide was discovered to cause
severe birth defects in babies born to mothers using it. Many of the children
were born with a condition called “phocomelia,” which results in shortened,
absent or flipper-like limbs. It was taken off the market in 1962. When the
doctors found out that Sarah’s unborn son would be among the children
with this disability, they advised her to have an abortion. However, Sarah
and her husband, both devout Catholics, refused. Sarah believed her son
had “a special mission.”
According to her son – now Msgr. Anthony Figueiredo, 52 – what his parents told the doctors was that “if God has allowed us to conceive a child,
that child will not be wasted. On the contrary, God will have a mission for
that child, which they believe very strongly is that I would be a priest.” The
priest said that his parents didn’t like to talk about the doctors’ push to
abort, and that they only informed him that had happened on the day of his
ordination. Despite his crippled arm, Msgr. Figueiredo was ordained in
1994 and has vast experience in missionary work and a hefty academic
background in theology. He currently serves as a spiritual director to hundreds of seminarians studying at Rome’s Pontifical North American College, advises cardinals on their writing and speeches, and works closely
with the Pope. He has also met Mother Theresa and was able to work as a
personal assistant to St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI for several years.
The priest largely credits his parents and their faith for encouraging his
vocation, telling CNA that they “never discouraged me from being a priest.”
“With great sacrifice they sent all of us to Catholic schools and now with old
age my mother is the happiest woman in the world, one would say, because she has a son who is a priest.”
Sarah, 84, told CNA that she and her husband had prayed that one of their
three sons would become a priest, and that she knew this prayer would be
answered in Tony, as she calls him, because “I dreamt that one day. I had
a dream that one of my sons, the last one,” would be ordained. “I (knew) he
had mission.” While there are “a lot of blessings” in having a son who is a
priest, one of the biggest came during a trip Sarah made to Rome to visit
her son during the June 1-3 Jubilee for Priests. Msgr. Figueiredo said he
had been walking in the Vatican Gardens one day in April when he got a
phone call from the Pope himself.
The Pope said that he knew the priest’s mother would be coming to Rome
for the Jubilee of Priests, and wanted to meet her. Since he was busy
throughout the three-day event, which concluded with a Mass June 3, Francis told Msgr. Figueiredo that “I would really like her to come to my home
prior to that Mass.” It was Pope Francis himself, then, who “completely
organized everything,” and welcomed both the priest and his mother into
his residence at the Vatican’s St. Martha Guesthouse the morning of June
3. “It was very, very beautiful. He was just like an ordinary parish priest the
way he made my mother welcome,” Msgr. Figueiredo said, recalling how
Francis spoke about the number of children in their families and the biblical
roots of some of their names.
One particularly touching moment for Msgr. Figueiredo was when the Pope
told him that he recognized the priest’s mother from a photo he had given
him. “I gave him the photo three years ago,” Msgr. Figueiredo said, saying
it’s “quite extraordinary that this Pope, who is probably the most photographed man in the world, remembers each person. It’s as if he has them in
his heart.” Pope Francis also administered the Sacrament of the Anointing
of the Sick to Sarah, who has suffered from two strokes in recent years and
in 2010 was diagnosed with aggressive, stage 4 breast cancer, but today is
cancer-free.
The Pope “took his time, there was no rush, and he was particularly compassionate,” the priest said, noting how when his mother attempted to stand
up for the anointing, Francis told her sit down and himself got up. “I think
that’s amazing from a Pope. There’s really no sense of being in authority,
he’s really a servant, a servant of the servants of God. We touched that that
day in his residence.” Sarah, who carried the chalice up to the altar during
the Mass after their meeting, said to visit the Pope was “a gift from God…I
felt very proud that God had chosen me to come to this special occasion.”
After bringing the chalice to the Pope, “he pressed my hand, and he recognized me and he held me tight,” she said, explaining that the experience is
something “I will remember all my life and I thank God for that.” She also
thanked her son for helping give her the opportunity to meet the Pope and
to receive his blessing. Giving advice to parents who are hoping for a religious vocation among their children, she counselled that “the more you
pray the better it is.” “We need more priests in this world,” she said, noting
how she “always prayed” for her son’s vocation. Even at 84, Sarah continues to pray a daily rosary, keeping one under her pillow so that should she
wake up during the night, she can pray a decade before going back to
sleep.
Msgr. Figueiredo said that to celebrate the Jubilee of Priests alongside his
mother “was an enormous sign to me that God is faithful,” especially when
someone gives something of their life to him, whether it’s a parent, a child,
a type of suffering, or a vocation. In regards to the “special mission” his
mother believed he had, the priest said for him, this mission has entailed
showing a special compassion and solidarity with those who suffer.
“I truly believe what St. Paul said: that God’s power is made perfect in
weakness,” he said, voicing his belief that priests “who particularly have a
cross can show a certain kind of compassion and mercy to those who are
suffering.” While as a priest “I can preach until the cows come home,” people really start paying attention when they see “that you yourself suffer in
your flesh…one immediately connects.”
For Msgr. Figueiredo, this is what Christ did on the Cross: “he suffered on
the cross for us, and so when I am going through suffering myself I see that
he’s gone there before me and has faith, believing that the Father will bring
good even from tragedy.” “That’s really helped me to stay close to the
smell of the sheep, as Pope Francis exhorts us as priests and as every
Christian,” he said.
