Comedy of All Sorts Served Up at JakFringe Festival
Comedians, hypnotists, magicians and musicians will converge on Jakarta next week
as the first Jakarta International Fringe Festival, or JakFringe, begins. From Nov. 7-11,
the best in local talent and famed international acts of comedy and performing arts
will be found, seen and heard at various locations in Kemang.
Festivalgoers will have plenty to choose from with more than 100 acts scheduled
to perform. Anticipation, though, will for sure be high before the festival’s star comedic acts take the stage. On Saturday Nov. 10, English comedian Bill Bailey, the comedian with the perfect pitch, will perform, as will Deddy Corbuzier, Indonesia’s very
own mentalist and the U.K.’s Alan Bates, who combines hypnosis and illusion with his
own unique brand of comedy. On Thursday, Nov. 8, Comedy Masala, a crew of five
very different acts from different places and influences, will fill the stage and (presumably) the room with laughter.
The first ever JakFringe festival is guaranteed to be five days of fun like this city
has never seen before.

English comedian and musician Bill Bailey is best known for his role in the TV shows
“Black Books” and “Nevermind the Buzzcocks,” and live shows such as “Dandelion

the way Bailey has. Featuring music from genres such as jazz, rock, rave, classical
and even theme songs, this favorite performer of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is in a
league of his own. This is why he is dubbed No. 7 greatest stand-up comic on the 100
Greatest Stand-Ups list!
For Dr. Fauzy Badjee, from Medan, North Sumatra, it all started with the intention
of making his classes at North Sumatera Islamic University much more interesting
and worth attending by incorporating jokes and comedy into his teaching methods. It
proved to be a success, and with hard work and persistence, Fauzy has emerged as a
confident and successful stand-up comedian, here to heal with the power of laughter.

Deddy Corbuzier is Indonesia’s very own
mentalist. His logic-defying, thoughtprovoking mentalism has entertained
Indonesians for many years and has won
Deddy numerous awards, including the
prestigious Merlin Award as World’s
Best Mentalist. Deddy’s melting pot of

International comedy hypnotist Alan
Bates has been performing hypnosis
shows for over 20 years. Willing participants may find themselves winning the
lottery on stage, meeting celebrities,
starring in the cast of River Dance, feeding baby fairies or even conducting an
orchestra. The show includes audience
participation but Bates stresses that you
cannot be hypnotized against your will
and that you will not do anything against
your own personal moral values. That is
why he looks for volunteers without any
