The Grovite An Independent Supplement Produced by Coconut Grove Business Improvement District. Summer Edition 2016 coconutgrove.com Coconut Grove is known as the sailing capital of Miami. Located on the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay, it’s no wonder you’ll find locals and visitors alike on the water in the warm summer months. Coconut Grove is the perfect place to watch a regatta, rent a sailboat for the day, or try paddle boarding. A local’s guide to Coconut Grove Miami’s original community by the bay since 1873 Miami’s original neighborhood was founded in 1873 by an eclectic mix of pioneers, artists, intellectuals, and adventurers. The tropical oasis of Coconut Grove thrives to this day as Miami’s escape from the stress of city life. In the middle of Miami, yet completely separate, Coconut Grove offers a warm, laid-back atmosphere of boutiques, shady lanes, sidewalk cafes, and quaint watering holes. There is a distinct bohemian flair that allows anyone to drop in and chill out every day of the week, any time of the year. Inside The Grovite you will find great options for what to see and do, as well as expert advice from local “Grovites”. View our full restaurant guide at www.CoconutGrove.com Three Healthy Drinks for the Summer by Mariana Diez, Founder, Juicense Drink & Eat Hamachi Tiradito Juicense is the Grove’s newest Juice bar and kitchen, located at 2992 McFarlane Road. www.Juicense.com We all know that summer in Miami can get really hot, which is why it is really important to stay hydrated all the time. One of the easiest ways to stay comfortable during this time is to cool your body from the inside out, and that means lots of cold glasses of water! If you’re getting a little tired of downing glass after glass of plain water, try some of these healthy, cooling, summer drinks instead. Cucumber + Mint Cucumbers are made up of 95% water, which means eating them on a hot summer day can help you stay hydrated. Mint helps relieve indigestion and, interestingly enough, it also works as an insect repellent making it ideal to have during the summer. You can mix this right in your glass or in a pitcher. To make a single serving: Fresh Juices Step 1: Put a few slices of cucumber and a mint sprig into your glass Step 2: Add a handful of ice, top off with water, stir, and sip! Green Tea + Lemon Green tea will help you burn fat and improve your digestion while lemons are alkalizing for the body, which means they will help you restore balance to the body’s PH. Step 1: Boil water and steep green tea in about 1 and 1/2 cups boiling water for about five minutes. Step 2: Add in lime juice and agave nectar (or sweetener of your choice). Stir until mixed. Step 3: Add a handful of ice. Enjoy! Citrus and Cilantro Pineapples help neutralize acidity in the body and are abundant in antioxidants. Cilantro helps detox the liver from all toxic materials and regulate blood sugar levels. Step 1: Muddle fresh pineapple cubes, orange slices, and cilantro until fragrant. Step 2: Add the water and splash of coconut water. Step 3: Refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours. Add ice and serve. Enjoy! from Jaguar Ingredients: 2 Cups of thinly sliced cucumber 1 Small red onion, sliced julienne 1 Serrano pepper, finely chopped 1 Cup of yuzu 4 Tablespoons of aji rocoto paste ½ Cup lime juice ½ Cup of orange juice Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Jaguar Ceviche Spoon Bar & Latam Grill’s menu offers fresh cuisine inspired by the flavors of Latin America, located at 3067 Grand Avenue. JaguarHg.com ½ Soy sauce ½ Cup avocado oil ¼ Cup of sugar 1 Teaspoon of salt ½ Cup of chopped cilantro 2 Ounces of fresh hamachi, sliced thin 1 Tablespoon of puffed corn Place all of the sauce ingredients in a bowl and mix together. Plate the fresh hamachi. Drizzle sauce on top and around the fresh hamachi. Arrange corn around the hamachi and garnish with micro-cilantro. Enjoy! Seafood Paella La Gamba offers the freshest seafood, paella and Mediterranean flavors, located at 3437 Main Highway. www.LaGambarestaurant.com from La Gamba Ingredients: 12 oz Calaspara paella rice 1 Tablespoon of minced garlic 4 Tablespoons of Sofrito (recipe below) 1 Tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil 1 Pinch of saffron 1/2 lb of Clams 1 lb of shrimp (peeled and deveined) 1/2 lb of mussels 1/4 of squid (cut in rings) 32 oz High quality fish stock* *La Gamba makes their fish stock daily from scratch, you can skip this step by using high quality fish stock of your choice. Pecan Infused Old Fashioned from GreenStreet Café GreenStreet Cafe is one of the Grove’s most iconic restaurants and outdoor dining spaces, located at 3468 Main Highway. www.GreenStreetCafe.net What you’ll need from the bar: Mixing beaker Stirring spoon Cocktail strainer Large square cube of ice Short cocktail glass Ingredients: 2 Dashes of angostura bitters 1 Dash of peach bitters 1.75 oz Pecan Infused Bourbon (Basil Haden) ½ oz Maple Simple Syrup Orange zest Orange rind & basil leaf (for garnish) Step 1: Add all the ingredients into the beaker. Step 2: Add ice cubes to the mixing beaker and gently stir your mixture to get all the ingredients properly mingled. Step 3: Strain your delicious drink into your short cocktail glass over your large cube of ice. Step 4: Garnish your drink by squeezing orange rind around the rim of your glass. Slap your basil in-between your hands to help bring out the aroma in the basil. Then drop a large piece of rind along the side of the glass with your basil for an elegant garnish. Enjoy! *TIP 1: The Bourbon is infused with pecans over an extended period of time and is strained out prior to use. You can do this process at home in advance. For the Sofrito: 1 White onion 1 Green bell pepper 1 Red bell pepper 1/4 Cup crushed tomato 2 Tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil How to make the Sofrito (Recipe serves 4): Step 1: Mince and sauté the onion until translucent. Step 2: Dice and add both peppers, continue cooking at medium heat for 15 minutes. Step 3: Add tomato and continue cooking until you reach a saucy consistency (10- 15 minutes). How to make the Paella: Step 1: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Step 2: Place 12” paella pan on medium heat, add oil, garlic, sofrito and saffron. Mix well over medium heat for 5 minutes. Step 3: Add the broth to the pan and and then all the seafood (distribute evenly throughout the pan). Step 4: Season with salt and cook until broth is reduced in half (around 10 minutes). Taste and adjust for seasoning. Step 5: Place in oven for 15 minutes. Paella should be done, however if you notice the consistency of the rice to be too wet or under-cooked, finish the paella on the stove top at medium heat until the rice is done. Step 6: Garnish with chopped parsley. Enjoy!
