What is OPAS?
WHAT IS OPAS?
The GX-24 Optical Print Alignment System
(OPAS) enables cutting paths and pre-printed
graphics from 2D Design to be accurately aligned
for cutting out. Professional quality bottle labels,
food packaging, product decals, etc., can be produced very easily. The system uses three large
black dots as registration marks (crop marks),
printed on the media. The GX-24 scans the media for the registration marks, makes a note of
their positions, and then adjusts the data so that
the cutting paths are output in the correct place
relative to the graphics.
When outputting using 2D Design V2, registration
mark position data will be sent to the GX-24 and a
search for the registration marks will be initiated
automatically - providing 2D Design is set up as
described on the next page.

Loading The OPAS Setup
LOADING THE OPAS SETUP
When you open 2D Design it usually defaults to
plain A3 paper size without OPAS, and Cutting &
Graphics Layers labelled.
1.
Go OPEN File and navigate to the >Shared RO drive
>Year 9
>Product Design
>A3 OPAS Carton Setup.
2.
Double click to open the file.
3.
Once opened go to File Save As and save
the file in your area but PREFIX with your
surname.
The three grey dots print
black and are used by the
laser on the GX24 to align
the cutting.
The grey dotted line indicates the limit of the printing
area + for OPAS all printing
or cutting has to be within
the dots.

STAGES IN PRODUCING THE CARTON OUTLINE
Drawing the Carton Outline
for Cutting Out
1.
Make sure that you have selected Cut Lines
from the Layer dialogue box.
2.
From the right hand menu check grid &
grid lock are selected.
3
From the LH menu select the Shapes tool
which will allow you to draw a square or
rectangle shape.
4.
Draw your square or rectangle to the
required size—(units of 10mm if grid lock is
selected).
5.
To draw the side of your box select Lines
and Attach.
Anything that you want the CAMM1
to cut out should be drawn on the
Cut Lines Layer and conversely all
graphics or artwork should be on the
Graphics Layer.
When printing the Cut Lines can be
hidden so that they are not printed
onto your graphics.
It is important to draw your lines in a
logical manner. This is because when the
drawing is output to CAMM1 the cutter will cut
the lines in the order drawn and the less the
card is fed back & forth the better for
accuracy.
6.
Work methodically around your base, click
once (LH mouse button) to start the line,
once to finish and once more to start the
next line.
7.
Once completed save you work!
8.

Place the hand finger near the outside of
the net and left click.
The outside lines of your net will be
changed to red—these are on top of the
existing black lines.
If any of the inside lines turn red it indicates
that you have a break in your outside lines,
click Undo last and locate and repair the
break, then repeat above procedure.

1.
Start a new 2D drawing: Start >New
2.
Ensure both Grid Lock & Step Lock are
deactivated.
3.
From File select Import File, then locate
your picture from your file area. Click OK to
accept the default values.
4.
Choose the Zoom in icon,
drag the
cursor over the section of the picture you
wish to work on.

In the Clip Settings dialogue box select
Mask excess data and Clip outside are
selected. The excess data will be made
invisible.
Although the example clips a photograph, clipping works with any image. Clip paths are drawn in a fine
grey line. By default they are always drawn on top of the rest of the
drawing. They cannot be printed or
output to CNC devices and so will
not spoil your output to CAMM1.

The image can be saved and incorporated
into other 2D Design work by using File
then Add.

Cutting and Creasing your
Carton - the final product
Now that you have printed the graphics on your
card you do not want a scored line cutting through
this.
CUTTING AND CREASING YOUR CARTON
The GX-24 has the facility to crease your card
at the fold lines thereby protecting your graphics work.
1.
Use the Layer button to select only the
Cut Lines and deselect the Graphics layer.
2.
Follow the instructions on Pages 9 & 10 for
setting up your printed card in the machine
and selecting the correct printer driver.
3.
This time after you have selected ‘Cut by
Colour’ also select ‘Use Creasing Tool’.
4.
Then OK.
5.
When prompted by the machine FIT
CREASING TOOL remove the cutter blade
and replace it with the creasing tool.
Beware the cutter blade is razor
sharp—unless you have been
shown how to change the blade ask
your teacher!
6.
Another dialogue box will appear afterwards
asking you to FIT THE CUTTER. Again
follow warning above!
7.
Do not remove the work when the machine has stopped. Inspect the work to
check that has been cut right through. If
the card is not fully cut—Output just the
Cut Lines:
Change the Tools setting to Cutter Only
Cutter selection to Cut by Colour & Cut
Lines only
Set speed to 200
No. passes to 1
Force to 150
