Designing Perfume Cartons with 2D Design V2 for the CAMM1
Highworth Grammar School Ashford Kent Year 9 Design Technology Key Stage 3 Project Designing Perfume Cartons with 2D Design V2 for the CAMM1 using O.P.A.S. Optical Print Alignment System © Paul Tate 2008 Booklet Version 1 Designing a Perfume Carton with 2D Design What is OPAS? WHAT IS OPAS? The GX-24 Optical Print Alignment System (OPAS) enables cutting paths and pre-printed graphics from 2D Design to be accurately aligned for cutting out. Professional quality bottle labels, food packaging, product decals, etc., can be produced very easily. The system uses three large black dots as registration marks (crop marks), printed on the media. The GX-24 scans the media for the registration marks, makes a note of their positions, and then adjusts the data so that the cutting paths are output in the correct place relative to the graphics. When outputting using 2D Design V2, registration mark position data will be sent to the GX-24 and a search for the registration marks will be initiated automatically - providing 2D Design is set up as described on the next page. © Paul Tate Page 2 05/06/2009 Designing a Perfume Carton with 2D Design Loading The OPAS Setup LOADING THE OPAS SETUP When you open 2D Design it usually defaults to plain A3 paper size without OPAS, and Cutting & Graphics Layers labelled. 1. Go OPEN File and navigate to the >Shared RO drive >Year 9 >Product Design >A3 OPAS Carton Setup. 2. Double click to open the file. 3. Once opened go to File Save As and save the file in your area but PREFIX with your surname. The three grey dots print black and are used by the laser on the GX24 to align the cutting. The grey dotted line indicates the limit of the printing area + for OPAS all printing or cutting has to be within the dots. © Paul Tate Page 3 05/06/2009 Designing a Perfume Carton with 2D Design STAGES IN PRODUCING THE CARTON OUTLINE Drawing the Carton Outline for Cutting Out 1. Make sure that you have selected Cut Lines from the Layer dialogue box. 2. From the right hand menu check grid & grid lock are selected. 3 From the LH menu select the Shapes tool which will allow you to draw a square or rectangle shape. 4. Draw your square or rectangle to the required size—(units of 10mm if grid lock is selected). 5. To draw the side of your box select Lines and Attach. Anything that you want the CAMM1 to cut out should be drawn on the Cut Lines Layer and conversely all graphics or artwork should be on the Graphics Layer. When printing the Cut Lines can be hidden so that they are not printed onto your graphics. It is important to draw your lines in a logical manner. This is because when the drawing is output to CAMM1 the cutter will cut the lines in the order drawn and the less the card is fed back & forth the better for accuracy. 6. Work methodically around your base, click once (LH mouse button) to start the line, once to finish and once more to start the next line. 7. Once completed save you work! 8. Select the Select tool to select all © Paul Tate Page 4 05/06/2009 Designing a Perfume Carton with 2D Design ADDING THE GLUING TABS Adding the Gluing Tabs 1.
