Welcome to the 2014 QAE Auction!
Thank you for choosing to spend this very special evening with us.
We are all fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community of parents, educators, and
most importantly – children -- and this evening is first and foremost a celebration of that.
This year marks the 4th annual QAE auction, which serves as the largest of our three PTSA
fundraising events. Putting together an event of this magnitude takes a lot of hard work, and
we are extremely fortunate to have such a committed, talented and dedicated fundraising
team. We would like to thank Auction Chairs Natalie Carlson, Cari Lui and Sarah Morris for
the countless hours of planning, organizing and coordinating that it has taken to make this
evening such a wonderful event. We would also like to thank the many volunteers who have
helped in so many ways. Lastly, we would like to thank our teachers and staff who have
offered time and resources toward sponsoring auction items, facilitating class projects, and
agreeing to be interviewed for our video.
The PTSA and school share a common commitment to providing our kids the best education
possible, and none of that would happen without the dedication and expertise of our
teachers. We strive to arm this talented group with the support, training and resources that
will best help them to succeed. In fact, over 90% of our budget directly impacts the
education your kids receive, with our largest buckets of spending breaking out as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Instructional assistants, kindergarten aides and reading tutors
Art and music programs
Staff training, planning and supplies
Social and emotional learning resources and support
Learning software and devices
This auction is our main fundraiser of the year – generating over 50% of our annual
operating budget – so it’s obviously an important one, and we encourage you to be a part of
it. We very much appreciate all that you have done for our school. Your commitment helps
raise the quality of the experience our kids will enjoy as they continue along their paths
through QAE.
Thank you again for being here, and please have a wonderful time!
Sincerely,
Lee Wierdsma and Derek Streat
2013-14 QAE PSTA Co-Presidents

Guidelines
Silent Auction
Registration entitles you to a bidder number. Your bidder number is located on both your
bidder card and nametag. It allows you to bid on all items in the Silent and Live
Auctions. There are two Silent Auction sections, along with a Gift Certificate Wall, Buy-in
Parties and chances to buy raffle tickets, cookbooks, photos and more, each with
separate closing times. To place a bid on a Silent Auction item, print your name and
bidder number clearly on the bid sheet next to the amount you would like to
bid. Remember, you may skip lines if you wish! All bids must be written prior to the
closing of the section. Please print clearly and provide your email address when signing
up for Buy-In Parties.
Live Auction
This year, we have over 20 Live Auction items, plus Class Art Projects, Kindergarten
Cooking School and the QAE Bench! Raise your bidder card to bid on amazing trips,
events, parties, and class projects. Each item goes to the highest bidder. Be quick!
Check Out
Guests will have the option to Express Pay by swiping a credit card at registration, thus
eliminating the need to see the cashier at the end of the event. We highly encourage
participants to participate in Express Pay to expedite the checkout process. Non-Express
Pay bidders with purchases can swipe a credit card or pay by check at the end of the
event. Silent Auction item pick-up and Live Auction item pick-up will be 15-30 minutes
after the sections have closed.
Fine Print
The Auction Committee has made every effort to describe and catalog all items
correctly. All items are sold “as is” and the Auction Committee and QAE PTSA are not
responsible for the accuracy of any description shown in this catalog or made
verbally. The values listed are estimates only and are not warranted for tax purposes or
fair market value. Items have not been appraised unless noted. The Auction Committee
reserves the right to withdraw or add items from the auction without prior notice. All
purchases are final. There are no refunds or exchanges. A final bid acknowledged by the
Auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. Reservations for trips and vacations
must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted.

Ms. Marks' Class Art Project: No. 26 Abstract Flowers
Ms. Marks’ Kindergarten class created beautiful abstract flowing flowers by drawing
graphic black outlines and filling them in with chalk pastels to elicit vibrant spring colors.
Enjoy this priceless modern piece of artwork in any area of your home. You can’t get those
precious kindergarten years back but you can remember them everyday with their
beautiful handmade artwork. [Measures 24”x36”.]

Ms. Yokoyama's Class Art Project: The Dragon’s Gold
The writers of Room 210 banded together to create an original story--and an original work
of art. Each student added phrases and ideas to link together a full story of 425 words.
Then, each student chose words from the story for a poem. Students illustrated their chosen
words on tissue paper with watercolors, which were adhered to a 30”x30” piece of wood
(used on the set of James & the Giant Peach and donated by Seattle Children's Theatre).
Their illustrations cover all but the words of the poem, allowing both story and distillation
of words to show through. On the reverse, the signatures of each child are displayed.
Donated by: Ms. Yokoyama's Class

Ms. Cryan Leary's Class Art Project: Flying Colors
In a colorful, original piece of artwork, children in Ms. Cryan Leary's Kindergarten class
designed their own feathers (some while singing). Together, they created a magnificent bird
rich in color and character. A rare bird indeed! The artwork is framed and comes with a
diagram identifying each artist's contribution. It will touch your heart and brighten your
home!

Ms. Smith's Class Art Project: What Fills Your Bucket?
It is a wonderful piece of modern art created from recycled soup cans that are mounted on
a plywood backing. Painted to coordinate with the cans (buckets) that the kids have
created, this contemporary piece expresses all the creativity and spontaneity that 1st
Graders can offer. Inside the buckets are pictures from the kids describing what their
“bucket word” is. You will be touched and surprised! [Measure 36”x36”.]

Ms. Diller’s Class Art Project: Purple Rain
This 18”x24” original piece from Ms. Diller's 1st Grade Class was painted using only
pieces of yarn. Over the course of several days, students contributed their own lines by
dipping the yarn into paint, then laying them across the painting. As more lines and colors
were layered over each other, the lines blurred together to make a one-of-a-kind
masterpiece. On the reverse, the students’ signatures are displayed. This sweet, sentimental
artwork is ready to hang.

Ms. Colando’s Class Art Project: Our Window on the World
Ms. Colando's class presents to you Window on the World, a beautiful natural landscape
of the Northwest viewed through a restored original Craftsman window. Through the
delicate art of paper cutting and origami, the students created a vibrant and colorful vista
in 3-D, depicting Puget Sound, Mt. Rainier, forests, clouds, and cherry blossoms. This 28" x
21" 6-paned window is the perfect frame for their expression of art and gives you a glimpse
into the children's home and their community.

Ms. Dickens’ Class Art Project: Organic Forms in Encaustic
After discussing the meaning of “organic art”, Ms. Dickens’ students thought about shapes
and lines that would occur in nature and under a microscope. The kids sketched their
ideas and discovered the importance of composition, tension and balance. On a board
primed with wax encaustic, they worked diligently to carve natural shapes and organic
lines, adding oil pastels and wiping away the excess pigment to reveal their work
juxtaposed to the dark wax. Measuring 32”x32” in a frame, this unique work of art
expresses the students’ imagination and creativity.

Ms. Klope's Class Art Project: Whose are Whose?
Ms. Klope’s 3rd Graders were asked to write their names and make symbols that represent
themselves. Those symbols were used to create a border for this sweet, sentimental work of
photographic art of their feet. After you find their names and see what symbols they chose,
attempt to figure out whose shoes are whose. Stylized to showcase their feelings, their art
and their bodies, this piece captures a moment in time that you will cherish forever.

Mr. Bailey's Class Art Project:
We Are The Stuff That Stars Are Made Of
Encouraged to think about their place on Earth, students were inspired to create a starstudded piece of art using elements like aluminum, wood and natural dyes. The result is a
30”x40” beautiful drawing of trees reaching toward the heavens. Filled with stars and
cosmic detail and rich in depth and color, this masterpiece is mounted on a stained
