Dear QAE Families: Thank you for choosing to spend this very special evening with us. We are thrilled to be part of such a wonderful community of parents, educators, and most importantly— children—and this event is a way for us to celebrate, support and honor them. The Benefit Auction is our main fundraiser of the year, generating over 50% of our annual operating budget. It is an important event that funds our budget for the remainder of the school year. The PTSA and QAE share a common commitment to provide our students with the best education and learning environment possible. Our PTSA budget supplements 14% of the annual QAE budget this year and provides: Staffing Resources: Music Teacher, Kindergarten Assistants, Math and Reading Instruction, and Technical Support; Classroom Assistance: Supply and materials, professional development for classroom staff, tools and software to support all learners; Community Support: Social and Emotional Learning curriculum and training; Community Events; Back to School Night; Summer BBQ; Spaghetti Dinner; Family Game Night; Field Day; Summer Play Dates—and much more. We would like to thank the volunteers who have helped procure, plan, organize, assist with classroom art projects, bake for the Dessert Dash, and volunteer during our event tonight. We would also like to thank our teachers and staff who have offered time and resources toward sponsoring auction items, facilitating class projects, and participating in our video presentation. Thank you for being here tonight, thank you for your support, and thank you for your generous contributions that will allow us to fund our programs and staffing for the remainder of the 2014-15 school year. Casey Cheever (QAE Instrumental Music) 15 Explorers Art Auction 2014-15 QAE Class Art Projects Kindergarten 304 Only One You This really is one of a kind! Inspired by the book Only One You, the students of Ms. Marks’ class each handpicked out a rock and painted it with their uniqueness in mind. Their beautiful stones were attached to driftwood that was converted into a unique and awe-inspiring bookshelf straight from nature. On this bookshelf, you will find a custom-made book by Ms. Marks’ students, Words of Wizdum. Measures 48”x18”x10”. Includes a signed copy of the book Only One You gifted by the author Linda Kranz. Donated by: Ms. Marks’ Class 314 Funny Faces Ms. Ward’s Kindergarteners explored clay and the many facial expressions that can be made to show different emotions. After a lesson on facial expression, (and an earlier lesson on texture from Ms. Amsel), they sculpted small slabs of clay and made small faces on round slabs. They then cut more shapes from the textured slabs, and after firing and glazing all the tiles, they arranged them in a 16”x20” framed masterpiece. Donated by: Ms. Ward’s Class 315 Home Is Where The Heart Is Ms. Cryan Leary’s Kindergarteners present to you a captivating work of art that expresses their feelings of love for their newest family and home: classmates, teachers and community who have welcomed them to this incredible school. Using mixed media of oil pastels on colored paper and digital photographic editing, the students designed a vibrant and colorful 20”x30” premium polished acrylic print. From far away, you see two large hearts displaying the full color spectrum, one inside the other. Up close, the image transforms to show each student in black and white holding his/her personalized colorful heart up high for all to see. Don’t miss out on this amazing time in our children’s lives when they get to kick-off an annual tradition of sharing a special part of themselves with their Queen Anne Family! Donated by: Ms. Cryan Leary’s Class 16 Explorers Art Auction 2014-15 QAE Class Art Projects Kindergarten/1st Grade 311 Keep Exploring The inspiration came from not only our school rocket mascot but also from our own parental desire to impress upon the Joy of Learning to our child. Led by James Webber, a digital motion artist, this project was an opportunity to use both digital imaging and traditional paint, blending conventional art techniques with the flexibility of new media to create a final work of art. Using a 24”x36”canvas, James used each student’s hands as elements for a star point, layering different pigments, glazes and paints. The students got to create their own layouts, star placements, sizes, and type placements. To conclude this art project, James created a fort where students used glow-in-the-dark stars to create a night sky. Donated by: Ms. Diller’s Class 1st Grade 305 Worlds Beyond The night sky is filled with massive objects sending their reflected light to inspire wishes; each body of minerals and gas brimming with far-fetched tales of bravery, sacrifice, and spectacle, all of which are absolutely true. Our project is one photograph from the giant scrapbook of a wild astronomer. Drama activities led to the creation of Meck-5, a far away galaxy containing the planets Animal World, Tunnel Lady, Crazy Snowflake, Spacecraft, and Lazy Eight. Individually collaged planets were super-collided and added—along with a sun— to a 48”x26” night-sky board. What stories unfold as you gaze upon the shapes of these worlds? Your child knows! Donated by: Ms. Meck’s Class 313 Autumn Birch Trees This artwork from Ms. Smith's 1st Grade Class consists of 15 distinctive acrylic paintings assembled onto a 15”x35" canvas. Teams of two 1st Graders prepared each of the 15 paintings with bold, warm colors for background with an overlay of bare birch tree trunks and branches. The finished piece is framed with a simple oak border. This bold, colorful piece will look great in your Seattle home. Students’ signatures and photos are proudly displayed on the back of the artwork. Donated by: Ms. Smith’s Class 17 Explorers Art Auction 2014-15 QAE Class Art Projects 316 To Mondrian and Beyond! For their artwork, Ms. Kiley’s 1st Graders reflected on being brave young learners, taking inspiration from the life and works of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, who started out as a landscape painter and then decided to try something new: abstract painting. The students discussed the bravery and perseverance it took for Mondrian to set out on this new path, the concept of abstract art and how today we see abstract art everywhere. Using acrylic paints, each student played with shapes and colors to create their own original abstract masterpiece on a 4x4 inch canvas and then assembling them to create a large graphic-inspired 24"x24" art piece with a 3D element. Donated by: Ms. Kiley’s Class 2nd Grade 302 Playground Alphabet Ms. Martin's 2nd Graders went in search of the alphabet on the QAE playground, putting their iPads to use to photograph each letter that they found – and they found them all! The photographs were then assembled into a larger image, which was printed on a 20”x30” high-quality canvas. This unique and playful art piece is a wonderful showcase of our kids’ photography work and a reminder to us that letters are all around us. Donated by: Ms. Martin’s Class 309 Dickens School of Fish This project’s origin comes from the 2nd Graders’ PBL study of whales and water. The backdrop of this 40”x26” work is a sunset reflecting QAE colors of purple and orange. In the forefront is a school of vibrant fish being lead by Ms. Dickens, the orca. Each child has created his or her own fish with oil pastels. Accompanying the art is a class book displaying photographs of each child along with his/her fish creation. The students have named all fish and listed adjectives that describe how they see themselves. Donated by: Ms. Dickens’ Class 18 Explorers Art Auction 2014-15 QAE Class Art Projects 310 Adorable Garden Rain Barrel Hand painted by Ms. Leckie's students, this 55-gallon rain barrel will brighten up anyone's yard. Colorful flowers, clouds, butterflies and insects adorn this practical addition to your garden. The rain barrel is signed by each child and comes complete with a screen grate to keep debris and insects out, as well as a brass spigot with a hose hook-up. A rain barrel will save most homeowners about 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months. Saving water not only helps protect the environment, it saves you money and energy! Donated by: Ms. Leckie’s Class 3rd Grade 307 I Wish Origami "Wish Stars” in hues of blue and green were folded by Mr. Bing's 3rd Graders as part of a math project. The students were asked to write their wishes on paper, which provided the base for the foreground composition. Once folded, all the “Wish Stars” were collected into a 30”x30”x1.5” transparent plexi-glass box along with a stylized abstract of students' writing and the QAE Treehouse building. The composition was created with fused ink on nylon as an image photo transfer on plastic stencil in burnt orange. What a wonderful treat it will be to have so many wishes in your home. Donated by: Mr. Bingaman’s Class 308 Reflections What do you see when you look in the mirror? This unique mosaic piece will reflect back to you the brilliance and creativity of our children. Each mosaic tile is individually designed and crafted by Mr. Liner’s fabulous 3rd Graders. The glass tiles are combined to create a brightly framed mirror, with the rich colors inspired by the Pacific Northwest and the exuberant energy of our children. Donated by: Mr. Liner’s Class 312 Dog: A Colorful Life Rediscover your youth with this colorful pup portrait made with love by Ms. Klope’s 3rd Graders. Inspired by Pablo Picasso, each student designed his/her own unique square using oil pastels. The squares were blended together into a vibrant expressionistic dog portrait, exuding pure happiness! Elegantly framed and measuring 22”x22”, you will love having this fun pup in your home! Donated by: Ms. Klope’s Class 19 Explorers Art Auction 2014-15 QAE Class Art Projects 4th Grade 301 Underwater Chandelier Ms. Hunter’s 4th Graders were inspired to make an ocean-themed 3-dimensional “chandelier" in the style of the artist Dale Chihuly. Each student hand rolled their own unique pieces using steel wire and Duralite plexiglass and then painted them to contribute to this collaborative hanging sculpture. Measuring 12”x18”x18”, it’s truly a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that will commemorate your child’s 4th grade year. Donated by: Ms. Hunter’s Class 303 May Peace Prevail on Earth Ms. Colando's 4th Graders have created 3 “Peace Poles” with their original artwork. Peace Poles are posts that bear the message, May Peace Prevail On Earth in the languages of the world. They are in 180 countries all over the world, dedicated as monuments to world harmony. Peace Poles are now recognized as the most prominent international symbol to peace. When you plant your Peace Poles in your garden, you are connecting with people all over the world who have planted theirs in the same spirit of goodwill. These beautiful, unique pieces of outdoor art (4’, 5’ and 6’) are made of PVC and can adorn your yard anywhere from grass to concrete. (Assembly required) Donated by: Ms. Colando’s Class 5th Grade 306 A Cup of Joe The inspiration for this piece came from Mr. Bailey’s first name, Joe and from… COFFEE! Each of Mr. Bailey's 5th Graders created a unique coffee cup rendering on paper, using pencils and oil pastels. The individual coffee cups were then arranged together to form a 22”x28” masterpiece. The contrasting colors make this a treasure to have in your kitchen--and will inspire the feeling of waking up to a Cup of Joe!
