I received a heartfelt thanks from Mid-Michigan Honor Flight
Director, Tricia Donegan for your “wonderful support.” Besides cards
here are more ideas on what we can bring to convention for the
“goodie” bags: granola bars, cheese & crackers, chapstick, Kleenes
packets, hand sanitizer, pretzels, peanuts, gummy fruit snacks,
sugar-free mints &/or sugar-free hard candy. Our clubs are so good
at supporting this project. Please include a big hug and thank you
from me as well.
The CALL to the International Convention will be out very soon.

By the time you receive this newsletter the judging of the club narratives will be completed by the District Presidents
along with the State Chairmen and their State and Creative Entries for GFWC. President Fran and I are working on Award
certificates and power point listings for the upcoming State convention that go through our Awards Chairman Cindi Voss,
and Convention Power Point production by Chris and Bob Burns. The process is soon ending.
When I talk about reporting in this column there are some members that think this is not for them, but indeed it is, for the
reporting process is all about the projects every club member in Michigan has given their heart and soul to/in their
communities. It is a process that does not end when the project completes, it continues on to bring further awareness to
GFWC Michigan and GFWC International about what we actually do in this State Federation – it is your history – it is your
legacy!
The reporting process culminates at the GFWC Michigan Convention when clubs are recognized for their outstanding
work in their communities. Are you planning to attend? Why Not? Why should you?..........

We are coming to the end of the race and the horses are headed for the home stretch so make sure you get any new
member forms in to me by April 1st which is the cutoff date. My judge needs time to calculate the winners and all will be
announced at the State Convention. Remember as well to submit the names of any deceased members to myself and
Margie Carter as she needs time to prepare for the Memorial Service. (See Margie’s article in this newsletter).
As a reminder……….District Presidents……….don’t forget to have your members complete your purse for the “Preakness
Purse Parade” which will also be featured on Saturday at the State Convention. As with the hats last year, the purses will
be on the auction block and President Fran will let you know what the funds raised from the auction will be donated to.
To those clubs that submitted Membership reports, thank you. It was interesting to learn what ideas the different clubs
have to bring in new members. I plan to bring some of those ideas to you in the next newsletter so be watching. You
might find something new to try with your club. As I’ve said before, you all work hard to bring in new members but it is a
constant effort and maybe some new, different and exciting idea will work for you.
I mentioned in the previous newsletter about the “Star Recruitment Pin” for any member bringing in 5 or more members.
I know there are some of you out there, so please let me know and I will order them for you. There is no cost involved and
it is nice to recognize your recruiting efforts.
Finally, don’t forget to continue to ROAR. Recruit those members then invite them to an Orientation,
Orientation Activate them
within your club and Retain them by keeping them involved and showing appreciation for what they do. Sounds simple
and really it is.

Guiding Harbor Greetings!
Greetings from Guiding Harbor! While cleaning out papers this winter, I uncovered several versions of
the history of Girlstown/Guiding Harbor. What an amazing story it is! For years GFWC MI women have
been on the cutting edge when it comes to protecting children. I want to share some of the highlights
with you and in doing so remind you how big a part you have played in creating and sustaining this
agency.
Guiding Harbor was established in 1958 by women of GFWC MI as a child care agency and treatment center for
emotionally disturbed adolescent girls. Our first residential facility was licensed to serve nine girls with a staff that
included a director, a live-in housekeeper and a cook. In 1961 we were incorporated and in 1965 at the Annual
Convention, we cleared our indebtedness on the original building. In that same year, a fund for a second unit was
established and the women of GFWC MI affirmed their support of Girlstown as their project without a dissenting vote.
On November 7, 1970 a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a new (second) building designed to house 12 girls. Then
Governor William Milliken even recognized the event by issuing a proclamation proclaiming it Girlstown Day across the
state. However, difficulties and delays followed. Changes in licensing, mandates for more skilled staff, changing building
and fire codes began to impact the work we were doing. To ease financial issues it was decided to sell the older original
house and construct the new building on Quirk Road. On October 6, 1973 the new Girlstown home was formally
dedicated. GFWC MI women were encouraged to become Century Club members (contributing $100), Penny-a-Day
members (individuals giving $3.65) or to purchase items sold at District meeting and Convention (opportunities still
available to you today).
Change and progress continued over the following years and we have tried various methods to reach more young people.
We have sought to establish quality standards of operation and achieved National Accreditation for our efforts
repeatedly. Today we continue to maintain a girls’ residential program that is unique in that the girls go to public school
while receiving treatment. We offer foster care for boys and girls and a supervised independent living program for young
people transitioning back into the community.
Because GFWC MI women saw a need way back in 1958, Guiding Harbor/Girlstown was created. Since then you have
been a part of improving the lives of young girls and boys across the state through the work at Guiding Harbor.

GFWC MI EDUCATION FOUNDATION
Spring is just around the corner and when April 1st comes around all the
scholarship money allocated for each District moves into a single fund
that can be used by anyone in the State. So if you plan to apply for a
scholarship, now is the time to send in your application. The application
process is simple and a fillable form can be found on the GFWC MI web site. If you prefer, your club
president or District Education Foundation Representative can help you with a paper application.

Once again the GFWC Michigan clubs have answered the call and sent in narratives
outlining their amazing projects that give support to education across the State. Picking
Michigan’s “Top Ten” to report to International was unbelievably challenging! But whether
your projects made the top ten or not, every club has my sincere thanks for reporting and my continuing
admiration for the quality, the scope, the creativity, and the impact that your programs make to your
communities. You all deserve a standing ovation for all you do!

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH
Please take a moment to remember a wonderful GFWC MI woman, Carol Von Rogov. She held the chair
position for International Outreach until her passing. Carol was a kind, caring and positive person who
faced her health issues with a quiet dignity. She is missed.
President Fran and 1st Vice President Donna asked if I would finish up Carol’s term and I was happy to do
so. International Outreach is a special interest of mine so it was fun to read the reports and learn what
other clubs are doing to make a difference in their own communities as well as the world.
As you all know, International Outreach is designed to enable members to become better world citizens through
advocacy, education, and action. By doing this, club members can affect change in and for our global friends and
communities. Here in Michigan, we have added the issue of Human Trafficking to our International Outreach program.
Michigan ranks 2nd in the nation in Human Trafficking, which makes it especially important that our clubs address this
horrific topic.
I want to thank all of the GFWC MI clubs that reported in International Outreach. I am proud of all of your efforts. It was
uplifting to read about all of the good that you are doing.

As I write this article this time (was truly winter last time), it feels like spring could be on its way. Over 50 degrees today, sun is shining
and snow is almost melted. Come this weekend on March 13 – we “spring” forward – another sign of the coming of spring.
Since last I wrote, the Clubs in the District finished up all of their reports for the year. I continue to be amazed by all they do for their
communities. The judges who reviewed the reports tell me that this judging is one of the hardest things they have done – two of them
are retired university professors and the third a retired school teacher!
After that major effort, the Clubs moved on to February and the month of RED. I should say that two of the clubs are still
“on vacation”, but the other three just kept on going. GFWC-Big Rapids celebrated Heart Health Month in several ways.
Club members were asked to wear their little red dress pins to remind others of the need to take care of their hearts.
Home Life provided articles for club members throughout the month to help them learn more and eat better (a couple of
heart healthy recipes were provided). Oh, yes, and they celebrated Anna Howard Shaw’s birthday by providing the local
newspaper with a “birthday” article.
GFWC-Evart has a “heart” for their community and the children who live there. So for the last eight years, they have
shown their heart by hosting a Sweetheart Dance in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Started as a family affair, it
has turned into a teen dance. The club provides a safe environment, music, snacks for purchase and a basket
raffle geared just for them. They have an adult “guest dancer” named Gus who attends year after year who gets
the boys feeling at ease about dancing and quickly has everyone on their feet. All 130 young people in attendance
crowd the dance floor and try to top Gus’ moves while club members watch the fun.
GFWC-Reed City tried something new this year. They had a Sweetheart Cookie Sale with the public able to buy
homemade sugar cookies to share with their loved ones. Proceeds from the sale were provided to the Reed City Area
District Library in memory of Diane Thompson, a member who passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. Diane was a
dynamic member of the Club and also served as Treasurer for the Northwestern District. Sales were not as strong as they
had hoped, but they see this as a signature event that will be carried on in future years.
Now that we are into March, the Clubs are gearing up for their spring projects and two of the Clubs will be “back in action” come April
and May. Northwestern District Club members are looking forward to the State Convention in April. Two of our members are candidates
for state offices – Sue Johnson for 1st VP and Connie Hopkins for Treasurer and our 2016-18 District President Joyce Iltis will be
installed. All of that and the chance to visit and see old friends and make new ones – well, who wouldn’t want to be there!

WCD NEWS
(West Central District)
Spring is just around the corner! What beautiful weather we have had recently! I am loving it!
WCD President Judy Nicklas has struggled to get new officers for 2016 – 2018. Our district has 5 clubs with a total membership of 87
members. The club members are very devoted and active with their own clubs but haven’t shown an interest in serving at the District
level. The one club that is an exception is Grand Valley. These women have served at the state and district level for many years. They
have decided that they cannot do it any longer. Therefore, new officers and chairs needed to be found. No one stepped up at the
District meeting. Judy has been able to get the officers from her own club but the chair positions still need to be filled.
Judy and her incoming board made arrangements to visit Caledonia and Edmore to share with those members the needs for the District.
Her hope was to be able to gain some representation from these clubs. I will report in the next newsletter whether she was successful.
All of the clubs are back to work after taking some time off during the winter months. A big thank you goes out to clubs that turned in
their annual reports. I know how much work goes into gathering the information for these reports so I appreciate the efforts that were
made.
I just heard that President Jimmy Carter has been declared cancer free! In honor of this great humanitarian, I would like to end this
article with a quote from him: “What are the things that you can’t see that are important? I would say justice, truth, humility, service,
compassion, and love. You can’t see any of those, but they’re the guiding lights of a life.”

GFWC Charlotte - NEWS – Mobile Meals
The program was started when a local doctor made two of our club members aware
of the need for such a program in our community. We set up a 365-day calendar
and found drivers to deliver the meals each day. They pick up the meals at the
hospital at 11:15 a.m. and deliver the meals to about 12-27 people each day. In
the beginning, almost all the drivers were from GFWC-Charlotte. Drivers are
assigned to, for example, the 1st Monday of each month. We went from one
driver/day to two, so people asked friends or husbands to be their
partner. Coordinators fill empty driver spots, remind drivers each day and handle
problems that may come up, and work with the hospital. The Qualifier is from the hospital and interviews those who wish
to have the service. We accommodate special dietary needs, likes, etc. The Board oversees the program. It is a
501(C)(3). New GFWC-Charlotte members are a wonderful source for drivers. This project is 45 years old and involves
about 1/3 of the Club!

GFWC Menominee - NEWS - Monarch Butterfly Garden
GFWC Menominee Woman's Club volunteers transformed an overgrown garden area
located at the Menominee Boys & Girls Club into a Monarch Garden to provide food
and shelter for Monarch butterflies. North American Monarch butterflies are in
trouble. Threats, including loss of milkweed habitat needed to lay their eggs and for
their caterpillars to eat, are having a devastating impact on their populations and the
migration phenomenon.
Volunteers tilled the ground and spent numerous hours digging out huge roots to
clear the garden area before peat moss was worked into the soil. A dozen milkweed
plants were transplanted along with additional butterfly-friendly plants – Lupine,
Coneflowers, Gaillardia, Phlox, Rudbeckia, Sedum and Zinnias.
GFWC Menominee Woman's Club will be the recipient of the Organizational
Achievement Award presented by the Chappee Rapids Audubon Society in recognition of our efforts to establish the
Monarch Garden. Carol Jeske and Mary Oswald will accept the award on behalf of the GFWC Menominee Conservation
Committee at the Environmental Achievement Awards dinner on April 1, 2016.

2016 GFWC MI CONVENTION
Parking for the H Hotel is at the bottom of the hill on Ann Street and that is also where the main Entrance and lobby for
hotel reservations is located.
Ladies, let me remind you that the Convention is just six (6) weeks away!! Time is just flying by. The registration form is
attached to this edition of the Newsletter. Please take time to read it, fill it out and send it and your money to State
Treasurer, Connie Hopkins, in Evart.
We have a full program planned for our short time together. The highlight of the convention will be the installation of our
President-elect, Donna Brown, as the President of GFWC MI. The other officers and district presidents will be installed
into their offices also.
Please remember, the HOSPITALITY room will not be the same this year as in previous years. Since we cannot take food
from our homes, or prepared in our homes to the hotel this how we are doing Hospitality this year. The H hotel, will
furnish coffee, (at a cost to the district), water for tea and water to drink. The district is/will put together small bags that
contain such things as raisins, breakfast bar, maybe if we can find small packages of juice. We may also furnish an
assortment of tea bags.
NOW, if you want to bring something to your OWN room, you can do that but the hotel is not too crazy about that.
Medical Form – Ladies, we are trying something different this year – we are asking you to bring the form filled out, folded
in half and your name on the fold of the form, we will file them alphabetically and be a little bit prepared in the case that
something should happen to any of you. You can find the form on the state website.
One last thing, please have patience when you are registering and receiving your packets. We will have some
inexperienced members working and we will be doing the best we can. Most workers have attended and worked at
conventions but this year will be helping out where needed.

This is the official notification of the 121st GFWC Michigan State Convention as specified in the
GFWC Michigan Bylaws, Article II, Meetings, and Section 3:
“Notice that the CALL to GFWC Michigan Convention specifying the time and place of holding
the convention shall be sent by first class mail to each club belonging to GFWC Michigan, GFWC
Michigan Advisory Board, Past GFWC Michigan Presidents and GFWC Michigan Junior Directors
at least thirty (30) days prior to the first day of the meeting.”
ARTICLE XVIII VOTING BODY
Section 1.
At all meetings of GFWC Michigan voting shall be restricted to delegates, or in their absence, their
registered alternates, from clubs or societies belonging to GFWC Michigan, whose dues are paid by
December 1st of the current fiscal year, and members of the Board of Directors of GFWC Michigan,
Chairman of Community Service Programs and other Programs, Standing and Special Committees, and
Past GFWC Michigan Presidents and Past Junior Directors.
Section 2.
No person shall be entitled to more than one (1) vote on any question.
Section 3.
No person shall be a delegate who is not a member of a club holding active membership in GFWC
Michigan.

ARTICLE XVII REPRESENTATION
Section 1. Each club holding active membership, dues paid by December 1st of the current fiscal year, and
having a membership of:
(a) Category 1: 1 – 20 members shall be allowed one delegate;
(b) Category 2: 21- 40 members shall be allowed two delegates;
(c) Category 3: 41 – 99 members shall be allowed three delegates;
(d) Category 4: 100+ members shall be allowed four delegates plus one delegate for every additional 50
members
(e) County Federations, dues paid by December 1st of the current fiscal year, may be represented by one
delegate who shall be a member of a club holding active membership in GFWC Michigan.

A member holding 2 or more offices, chairmanships, or voting privileges carrying a vote shall be
