ANDREW FLINTOFF VISITS US!
England and Lancashire cricketer and Ashes
hero Andrew Flintoff – who is supporting the
CHASE Ben Hollioake Fund during his benefit
year - visited Christopher’s recently to meet
some of the families and find out about the work
that CHASE does.
Cricket fan Thomas Blumire was there with his
father Jerry and Sian Tolfree went along with
her mother Tina to meet the cricketing star. Both
families said it had been a “fantastic
experience” to meet Andrew. Young Ben
Clampitt was there on a break as well and was
equally thrilled to meet him.

MP’s AT CHASE
.
Tory MP’s Anne Milton (Guildford) and Jeremy
Hunt (South West Surrey) experienced first
hand knowledge of what it is like to work at
Christopher’s recently during volunteers week
when they joined members of the CHASE care
team during their morning’s work.
After signing scores of autographs Andrew
headed off by helicopter to Fontwell racecourse
where he hosted a hospitality box of supporters
who had bid at a benefit night auction, for the
opportunity to spend the race day with him.
The event was organised by racehorse owner
Paul Beck who is also chairman of Andrew
Flintoff’s Benefit Year Committee.

Andrew Flintoff meets friends at CHASE
They chatted to several children and agreed it
had been a real privilege to meet the
youngsters and of course members of the
CHASE care team, as well as some of the many
volunteers who support CHASE every day.
Andrew Flintoff singing for CHASE
Only a couple of weeks after visiting CHASE
Andrew Flintoff was singing on stage with
Elton John!
Sporting legends were among a massive
audience who gathered at Battersea Park to
hear him sing on stage with Elton John in a duet
at Andrew Flintoff’s testimonial fundraising
dinner. They sang Rocket Man, the theme tune
which was adopted by the England team during
last year’s ashes victory over Australia.

Mike Summerbee from Flintoff’s Benefit
Committee who accompanied Flintoff on the visit
to CHASE; Jerry Blumire - father to Thomas; Tina
Tolfree - mother to Sian and Thomas Blumire.
The dinner raised money for the CHASE Ben
Hollioake fund as well as Leukaemia Research
Fund, the Kirsty Appeal, the Magic Bus Charity
and the Lord’s Taverners – all beneficiaries of
the benefit year. The event raised over £300,000.
CHASE LONDON MARATHON TEAM
TOPS £142,000•
Members of the CHASE London Marathon team
celebrated phenomenal fundraising success recently
at a post-event barbecue at Loseley House, the home of
team captain and CHASE Vice President Mike More
Molyneux and his wife Sarah.
The team of 51 runners raised an astonishing £137,086
through sponsorship - and following the team
get-together this figure increased by a further £5,000 to
£142,086 when runners turned up with more cheques
and cash!
John Hastings who is chair of the CHASE Horsham
Supporters Group and describes himself as the
“non-running facilitator” organises the team on behalf
of CHASE and was delighted with this year’s result. Anyone who would like to join the CHASE team next
year can contact him on 01403 253773.

ANTHEA AND GRANT’S
SUMMER BALL
Anthea and Chico
Once again CHASE Patrons Anthea
Turner and Grant Bovey held their
spectacular Summer Ball at their home
in Surrey in aid of CHASE and DebRa.
500 guests were treated to wonderful
food
and
drink
while
being
magnificently entertained by the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, Duncan James
and Keedie, the irrepressible Chico and
the eternally spectacular Lulu. Bobby
Davro once again proved that he is the
“Master of all Ceremonies” keeping
everyone in stitches the whole night,
even bringing Ozzy Osbourne to the
stage, Davro style of course. The silent
and main auctions provided some truly
amazing prizes including a flat in
London, supersonic jet flights, shopping
trip with Liz Hurley and a Ferrari to
name but a few. As you can imagine
these raised an enormous amount and
we cannot wait to find out if the final
amount will be a record. Find out in the
next edition of PaperCHASE.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to Anthea
and Grant for their continued generosity towards CHASE and DebRa,
we really are extremely grateful for their months of work and planning
to give us such a wonderful event. We would also like to send our thanks
to Christine and Loraine and everyone in the Summer Ball office for
their absolutely amazing hard work and dedication which made the
evening the success it was.
CHASE CEO moves on•
The Royal Philharmonic
comes to CHASE!
Children supported by CHASE had a rare
opportunity to take part in workshops run by
members of the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra recently – which culminated in a
concert being performed by the children
with the RPO musicians.
CHASE Care Team member
Jacqui Taylor with Olivia
CHASE music therapist Vicky Kammin said
the children were mesmerised by the whole
experience. “All the children were able to
contribute to the music and join with the
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra members in
creating many wonderful compositions. The
children’s faces were a delight to share; it
was a truly unforgettable experience for
everyone involved.”
The concert was attended by families; CHASE
chairman Stephen Walls, members of staff
and friends. Vicky said: “It was absolutely amazing. Everyone was in tears – the
children made us all so proud. They had learnt some wonderful compositions
which they performed on the evening and afterwards we created a slideshow of
the workshops and put that to music as well. It was really emotional.”
James Hutchinson, Head of Community and
Education at RPO, organised the project with
Vicky with the help of CHASE volunteers.
James plays keyboard and took part in the
workshops with colleagues Sigrum Griffiths
workshop leader who plays Djembe drum;
Dougie Mitchell on clarinet; Helen Simons on
bassoon, and Cath Haggo on violin.
Children who took part included Jonathan
Cheong (7) from Guildford; Carter Latif (4)
from London; Olivia Leonard (7) from
Guildford, Susannah Ocansey (16) from
Mitcham, sisters Jasmine and Melissa
Coleman from Horsham.

CHASE CEO Chris Robinson, who has headed the charity for just
under five years, has moved on to set up a UK branch of the
international charity, Right to Play.
At a farewell party, CHASE chairman Stephen Walls spoke about
the dedication and enthusiasm that Chris had always shown
and his professionalism in leading the CHASE team. He said he
would be very much missed by everyone but wished him luck in his
new venture.
A farewell barbecue was held at Loseley Park, courtesy of Mike
and Sarah More Molyneux, and funded by colleagues and friends
– who had also donated money in order to buy Chris a splendid
mountain bike and some luggage. Chris said that CHASE had been
a very special place to work and an honour to head such a
worthwhile and well respected charity.
An official announcement regarding a replacement CEO will be
made shortly.

THE RED FACE STORIES BOOK•
Could this be the greatest stocking filler for Christmas 2006?
Frances Coverdale, former BBC
broadcast journalist and chair of the
Richmond and Kingston CHASE
Support Group, has recently
completed the Red Face Stories book
- a collection of anecdotes about
things children and adults have said
or done to embarrass each other.
The book has been funded by Tina Aston who works at CHASE head office and
whose eight year old son Matthew was the first child to die at Christopher’s. The
introductory page features a poem written by Matthew. Tina decided to pay for
the publication of this book from the Matthew Aston Memorial Fund. Frances
offers her heartfelt thanks to Tina for this gesture, which now means that all
proceeds will go to CHASE.
The book is a real must for Christmas. Many of the stories have been provided
by celebrities! It costs £5.99 - via the CHASE Christmas Card brochure
enclosed or some independant book stores. For a list of stockists, contact Ian
Davies at CHASE on 01483 454213.
What is it worth? Is it worth selling? Come and find out at the CHASE Antiquities Roadshow with Clarke Gammon Weller at the
Sussex Barn, Loseley Park, Guildford GU3 1HS (next door to the CHASE head office) - on Thursday October 26th between 10am
and 3pm. Bring along your items and have them valued £1 each item by Clarke Gammon Weller experts - to benefit CHASE.
FOUNTAIN FEATURE FOR CHASE•
CHASE head office now has its very own fountain feature thanks to three former Merrist Wood
students, Chris Dawes, Liam Buxton and Tom Hales.
The three lads were responsible for a huge part of the construction work of the CHASE/Merrist
Wood Journey of the Senses Garden at Hampton Court Flower Show last year, designed by Jo
Ward-Ellison and Janette Dollamore, which won a Bronze medal.
Once the show was over, the garden had to be dismantled but Chris, Liam and Tom offered to
reconstruct it at CHASE. It was only practical to re-build part of the garden and the fountain feature
was the obvious choice. They set to work using materials from the Hampton Court Palace Garden
and their labour was free of charge!
The fountain is now fully operational - using recycled water of course – and the lads came along
recently to perform the official switch on.
They said they had been delighted to help CHASE and staff at head office are pleased to have such
a cooling feature in their office garden!
Tom Hales, Chris Dawes and Liam Buxton

Chris comes from Godalming and Liam and Tom are from Guildford. They have gone on to
build their own businesses - Chris as CD Landscapes (www.cdlandscapeservices.co.uk - 07815 705
873) and Liam and Tom work together in their own business as well, called Stone Circle Landscapes
(www.stonecirclelandscapes.co.uk - 07795 466 951 or 07812 061 303). The lovely white stones for
the fountain were kindly donated by Greg Skillbeck of Silverland Stone.
Wentworth supporting CHASE•
FEEL THE HEAT!
The Captain of Wentworth Club,
Brian Raven, welcomed 20 teams
from the City on May 31st to play a
round of golf on the famous West
course to raise money for CHASE,
his chosen charity of the year.
The Wentworth team: Julian Small,
Managing Director, Stuart Christie,
Deputy General Manager, Chris Kennedy,
Golf Courses Manager, Jason MacNiven,
Director of Golf, all at Wentworth Club.
Brilliant sunshine accompanied
the 9.30am shotgun start as
golfers took on the challenge of
playing the course just three days
after the BMW Championship had
taken place there.
The winning team, Charterhouse
Capital, received four top-of-therange
drivers
donated
by
Callaway and the team from Top
Golf Bay Drive Limited who came second, won four putters, donated by
TaylorMade Adidas Golf in Basingstoke.
After a superb lunch and prize giving, snooker world champion, Willy Thorne ran an
auction, Brian’s son Jamie Raven,
performed some magic and Russ
Abbott gave a heart warming
speech to end the day. The event
raised in the region of £50,000.
Brian Raven said: “CHASE is a
charity that has inspired me and
touched my heart and one which I
wanted to support during my year
as Captain of Wentworth. This
event was superbly supported by
golfing enthusiasts from the City
who had an exceptionally good
day’s golf and were extremely
generous in support of CHASE
during the evening auction. It was
a wonderful day and I am
delighted that we raised so much
money for this very worthy cause.”
How many basket ball players can you get into a MINI?
CHASE brought along its Mini raffle to the charity tournament
and Heat players joined Tom Felton to see how many they
could get into the snazzy little convertible!
A large crowd at the Guildford Spectrum enjoyed the Guildford
Heat’s first charity event tourament sponsored by 96.4 The Eagle.
Basketball fans were treated to a great afternoon’s entertainment
in a 4 team round-robin tournament, and some great
entertainment in between the matches.
Taking part in the Swish Basketball Celebrity Free Throw
competition were ex-NBA star John Amaechi who shared the
free-throw shooting title with Olympic Gold Medal sprinter Allan
Wells after a sudden death shoot-out.
CHASE had invited Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy, of Harry Potter
fame) who was just edged out by Amaechi along with Peter
Gordon from 96.4 The Eagle. The afternoon was complete when
the Heat paid homage to St.George’s Day as the Guildford
Spectrum mascot, Specky, enacted the slaying of the Heat
Dragon Mascot Scorcher, but Specky could not carry through
with the slaying and the pair left the court as friends, much to the
delight of the young Heat fans.
The wining team: Charterhouse Capital
Partners (Jeremy Greenhalgh, Simon
Andrews, Nigel Clark and Jeremy Ghose)
Mike Davies, Heat Chairman said “Everyone had a great time this
afternoon and due to the generosity of the fans who took part and
the fans who attended the event, we hope to raise about £2,000
for CHASE.”
JUNGLE FRIENDS VISIT CHASE•
Jungle Friends roared along to see children and families supported by CHASE at Christopher’s recently. This lively
interactive play includes songs, rhymes and fun all the way and was staged by actors Susie Pottinger, Alistair
Macfarlane, Anne Salway, Angela Smith from the Lantern Theatre Company, based at the Lantern Arts Centre in
Raynes Park south west London.
The Lantern Theatre Company supported by The Local Network Fund is a government initiative managed by the
Children and Young people’s Unit to offer opportunities to children and young people who face disadvantage or
poverty. Details of the Lantern Art Centre from 020 8944 5794 or visit the Lantern Theatre Company website at

CHASE CHALLENGERS RETURN FROM PERU•
A team of challengers raising money for CHASE
has returned from a ten day trek along the
spectacular Inca trail in Peru.
And the next one is …… a challenge in exotic
Borneo which sets off on February 25th 2007, a
fantastic event that combines climbing, cycling and
rafting. The first discipline in this ultimate Charity
challenge is to climb Mount Kinabulu, which at
4,093 metres is the highest mountain in South-East
Asia. Then you cycle the Crocker Mountain Range
which is 180km in two days, then finally white water
raft down the mighty Padas River, followed by an
optional visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.
Headed by CHASE chairman Stephen Walls the
team of ten members hope to raise £40,000
between them for CHASE.
Stephen said: “It was a truly fantastic experience
and an amazing place. No matter how many
pictures you see beforehand, nothing prepares
you - it is quite breathtaking.”
“Members of our group came from lots of
different backgrounds - several had not met
before but we got on extremely well and enjoyed
many laughs together during the ten day trip.
There was great team spirit.”

BIG BLISTERS FOR EXTREME FEAT!
There really are no lengths to what CHASE
supporters will do to help us with our fundraising.
The latest idea is a real example of English
sporting eccentricity.
Phil and Nick on a training session
at Hadrian’s Wall
Two otherwise entirely sane, respectable guys Phil Stapleton, a 33 year old schoolteacher (from
Charterhouse School in Godalming), and Nick
Gibbins, a 32 year old surgeon, are planning to
spend much of the next 18 months training for, and
then running, four of the most extreme marathons
in the world in a single year:- the highest (at
Everest Base Camp), the lowest (by the Dead Sea),
the coldest (at the North Pole) and one of the
hottest - (the Marathon des Sables); in fact 243
kms over six days through the Sahara Desert.
This challenge, which is believed to be the first ever attempt at these four marathons in one
year, has been christened “Extreme Feat”, for good reason!
The bookings have been made and training is underway. The first event is early next year. The
team is currently looking for relevant corporate sponsorship in chunks of £1,000 to £25,000.
Any ideas or good contacts with sports companies/ health brands or travel/airlines, please let
Catherine Loveless know at CHASE Head Office or contact the team direct at
[email protected]. We will follow their progress in PaperCHASE both in their
challenge and at related fundraising events that will take place over the next 18 months.

Funding boost
CHASE has welcomed a funding boost for children’s
hospices in England following a meeting between
representatives of the Association of Children’s
Hospices and the Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The government has agreed to provide £9 million a
year for three years which will be shared between
the children’s hospice services in England.
However the government has yet to announce
exactly how it intends to divide and administer
these funds.
While this is welcome it will form only a small
percentage of the £3.2 million CHASE has to raise
each year.
Southern Counties Radio say thank you!
Southern Counties radio presenter Mark Carter with Pauline Cox from the radio station visited Christopher’s
recently as part of their Southern Counties Radio Act of Kindness Week. They presented staff at CHASE
with delicious tins of biscuits and thanked them for the work they do in the community.

Surrey Street Rodders - go well over a ton!
You might think that The Surrey Street Rodders would be
renowned for going over a ton - and this time they have reached
1,000 for CHASE - but not on the road! They bought 1,000 x £1
tickets to win our BMW Mini Cooper Convertible in the CHASE
Mini Raffle at their Rushmoor Arena event and then when they
visited Christopher’s recently on Open Day they had another big
surprise for CHASE sponsorship manager Nicky Rennie - they
bought another £1,000 worth!! Young Dominic Bowden, whose
family is supported by CHASE was delighted to meet the guys
and enjoyed some time at the wheel of the fantastic hot rods!

CHASE BEREAVED
PARENTS GROUP•
Social Information on Disability - SID, has launched a children’s
second hand disability equipment service. The new service, run
via the SID website, has been set up to complement the adult
equipment service which has proved to be very popular with
disabled people and carers in Surrey.
CHASE now has a Bereaved Parents group which was set up to provide
bereaved parents known to CHASE with an opportunity to meet other bereaved
parents in a welcoming and mutually supportive environment. The group was
intended to provide them with the opportunity to share their experiences, learn
from each other and thus, enable them to cope with their own grief.
Equipment for sale or donation is advertised on the website
www.asksid.org.uk Potential purchasers contact the seller; direct
or contact SID on 0800 0439395 or email [email protected]
The group was organised by Heather Tilley, CHASE Family Support and
Bereavement Counsellor; Jane Day, CHASE Deputy Community Team Leader
and Lynne Forrester, who is Learning & Development Facilitator at CHASE.

Printer cartridges
A total of 14 bereaved parents attended the group, which was held weekly for
seven weeks - and each week explored a specific topic although the
conversation often covered a range of issues experienced by the parents.
Topics included telling the story of their child, memories, the impact of the
bereavement on relationships, how to support their other children, coping with
anniversaries, what to do with possessions, the future and facing Christmas.
Did you know that CHASE has a recycling scheme
for printer cartridges?
We are offering FREE collection of your printer cartridges*
which are worth up to £3 each to CHASE.
Please visit our website at www.chasecare.org.uk for further
details or contact Ian Davies in the CHASE fundraising team - tel:
01483 477756 or email [email protected]
*outside Guildford area a number of cartridges will need to be
accumulated before collection.
Despite some initial anxieties about joining a group, everyone soon became
friendly and very quickly there was a sense of cohesion and mutual support
within the group.
Those who had attended had clearly found it a positive experience and
Heather was urged to continue these groups into the future - another group
will be held in November this year.
Parents also agreed to continue to get together on a more social basis and
are now meeting regularly.
The Biz perform for CHASE•
Victoria and Jack with Fagin,
Nancy, Dodger and both Olive r ’s
Students from The Biz Theatre Summer School staged an exceptional production of Oliver! to sell-out houses at the
Rhoda McGaw Theatre in Woking. Produced and directed by ex Royal National Theatre performer and director Erika
Vincent, the show featured an ingenious set with moving staircases as the audience was taken on a magical journey from
the opening scene at the Workhouse, to Fagin’s den, Paddington Green and the alleyways of London. Proceeds from this
year’s production are being donated to CHASE and some children and their families supported by CHASE went along to
the matinee performance and had a wonderful time. It is estimated that the production has already raised over £3000!

CHASE Ben Hollioake Fund News
Cricket and skittles!
The fifth year of cricket and skittles between two pubs in Horley Surrey, The Farmhouse and The
Bull, were once again a great success. Surrey and England players Martin Bicknell and Mark
Butcher went along to the six a side match in The Farmhouse pub garden and The Farmhouse
won the match by 80 runs!
The Martin Summers Man Of The Match Award was won by Paul Griffiths of The Farmhouse.
The skittles match at The Bull in August was going well until the rain set in, so a no-win-draw was
agreed and everyone retreated indoors for the raffle and auction which raised a lot of money and thanks go to the many local and national businesses who supported the events.
Funds raised from both events were a record £6,000, the most ever raised over the five years
these events have been staged.

CHASE by selling as many works of art as they possibly
can in one gloriously hectic evening. There’ll be lots of
big name, well-established artists represented but they’ll
also have plenty of modestly priced pieces by young
talent at the beginning of their careers so you can still
snap-up a bargain and support CHASE at the same time.
