Budget Consultation
Lanterns, Lights & ‘luminations
The greater part of the Council‟s budget is the tax levied from residents, called the precept.
It‟s that time again ... Christmas is only just around the
corner, although the Town Council has been working
on it since January!
It is important that a realistic figure is set for the Council‟s precept because setting the precept too low or too
high could create significant issues for future years. It is
also important that careful consideration is given to
what the community needs or wants.
Now is the time of year when the Council starts to think
about next year's precept and preparing a budget.
It is the community which pays for the council. Without
detailed consultation with residents how can Brixham
Town Council be sure that it is delivering what the
community needs or wants?
Brixham Town Council will be holding a public meeting in October that will be open to all residents. A draft
budget will be presented and an explanation given of

Brixham Lanterns, Lights & „luminations will be held
on Saturday 28th November. The Quay, The Strand
and Middle Street will be closed to traffic from 1pm,
with entertainment along The Quay starting at 2pm.
Following last year‟s excellent entertainment, Paul
Pickett from With a Difference Entertainment has very
kindly offered to provide entertainment and music on
The Quay again and there will also be stalls selling lots
of goodies to keep you warm and bursting with Christmas joy.
The parade will commence at 5pm from the Fish Market. Once again, the theme is recycling so get your
thinking caps on and start designing your lantern! Traditional lanterns are also very welcome!

what are operational costs, for example staffing and
premises and what are statutory costs (i.e. the obligations dictated by law), such as costs around the annual
audit and insurance costs. There will be an opportunity
for residents to have input and say on what their community needs and how it might be funded.
Do you know what our committees are responsible for?
During their election campaign the Councillors made a
commitment to improve relationships with its community, be more open and transparent in how it operates
and allow residents to have a greater input and say on

Shoalstone Pool
Stallholders, including local businesses Millie and Me,
Bertie and Crew and Sandy Toes, gave some great
feedback and are keen to make it an annual event,
something which Shoalstone Pool Limited would enthusiastically support.
Apart from being a celebration of a Shoalstone summer, the main aim of the day was to raise much needed
funds for the Friends of Shoalstone Pool, which we did
to the tune of nearly £600.
It‟s been an eventful summer at Shoalstone Pool,
which closed for the season on Sunday 6th September.
The weather has not always worked in our favour,
but what we may have lacked in sunshine we have
made up for through the enthusiasm and hard work
of our committed team of lifeguards, volunteer directors and Friends.
One of the early highlights of the season was Brixham College‟s end of year celebration when the pool
was full of local youngsters enjoying a sunny afternoon to mark the end of the summer term in July.
It‟s always fantastic to see the pool so busy!
July also saw the unveiling of the classic print created by local artist Keith Tunnicliffe to celebrate the
pool‟s art deco heritage. At least 25% of revenue
from the sales of the print is being donated to
Shoalstone Pool Limited to help fund the upkeep of
the pool. If you haven‟t bought yours yet then you
can pick one up at Bertie and Crew on the marina or
online at www.littlebirdonabranch.co.uk.
In August we had the Fun Day organised by Duty
Manager Sam Evans when about 150 people turned
out to show their support for our local lido.
The most popular activity was zorbing, where participants walked on water in giant inflatable balls
loaned by the RNLI. People enjoyed it so much that
we are now exploring whether we can invest in a
couple of zorbs as a permanent addition to the pool's
equipment.
Also lots of fun was the lifeguards v Brixham Town
Council swimming race. The Council put up a valiant effort, but the lifeguards won - which is as it
should be really!
Another exciting development this summer has been
the opening of the fantastic Shoals „Café on the Lido‟
run by Sean and Sarah Perkes. Overlooking the pool
this restaurant arguably has some of the very best
views in Torbay, if not the whole of South Devon.
With food to match, Shoals is certain to remain a popular destination for breakfast, lunch or dinner in the
months to come.
With Autumn fast approaching, the directors of
Shoalstone Pool Limited along with the Friends of
Shoalstone Pool will continue to work hard to secure
the pool‟s future and to further develop this wonderful
facility for locals and tourists alike. In the meantime
the pool will be overseen by the watchful eye of Nick
Brown, a longstanding volunteer at Shoalstone whose
work over the winter months is invaluable.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year
and remember you can continue to keep up with our
news on Facebook and Twitter as well as our website
at www.shoalstone.com.
Thank You
In the July Brixham Signal there was an editorial mistake in the Shoalstone Pool article on page 10.
We apologise for not acknowledging the voluntary
commitment and hard work by Fox Builders in the
preparation for opening the pool.
On behalf of Shoalstone Pool Limited, Brixham Town
Council would also like to thank Pump Technology
who generously donated a sewage pump and associated equipment worth £5,000. The equipment was donated to benefit the community and is sited adjacent to
the new restaurant, Shoals Café on the Lido.
Allotment Waiting List

fruit and vegetables?
Then contact Brixham Town Council and get your

The soundtrack for the day was provided by local
acts including Maggie Duffy, Ben Wakely and the
Torbay Ukulele Club, with the pool and the sea beyond providing a spectacular backdrop for their sets.

Evaluation Committee
Councillor Surgeries
Evaluating the overall performance of the Town
Council and its component Committees, developing a
long term strategy and producing and recommending
changes in the Council policies, procedures and personnel matters are the responsibility of the Evaluation Committee.
The Council gained accreditation under the Quality
Status Scheme from the National Association of Local Councils (NALC). In January this year NALC
launched The Local Councils Awards scheme. The
Council confirmed by resolution at a Full Council
meeting that it would apply for automatic transition
to the new Local Council Award Scheme.
Come and meet your Ward Councillors at the following surgeries between 10am and 11.30am:
Saturday 3rd October 2015
Chestnut Heights Community Centre:
Councillors Victoria Campbell and Jacqui Wilbraham
Brixham Town Hall:
Councillors Ian Carr and Jill Regan
Saturday 7th November 2015
St Mary‟s Church Hall:
Councillors Sophie Walker-Haworth and Jessica Stock
The new scheme offers Councils the opportunity to
show that they meet the standards set by the sector,
assessed by their peers, and to put in place the conditions for continued improvement. It encourages progression by including three award levels: Foundation,
Quality and Quality Gold.
The Foundation Award demonstrates that a Council
meets the minimum requirements for operating lawfully and according to standard practice.
Chair of the Evaluation Committee, Cllr Rosemary
Clarke, said: "It is great to see the opportunity available to Brixham Town Council to participate in a
much improved scheme. Brixham Council has applied for the Foundation Stage initially, but can apply
for a higher award anytime or at the next renewal
date in 4 years time. We have been working hard
over the last few months ensuring the Council has up
to date policies and procedures allowing transparency
and permitting residents of Brixham to have confidence in their Council."
Brixham Town Hall:
Councillors Ian Carr and Rosemary Clarke
Saturday 5th December 2015
Chestnut Heights Community Centre:
Councillors David Giles and Victoria Campbell
Brixham Town Hall:
Councillors Rosemary Clarke and Steve Clutterbuck
We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these
events where you will be able to discuss ward or Brixham issues with the councillors.
The Evaluation Committee has already produced a
Staff handbook and several policies and undertaken
the recruitment of an apprentice.
Grants
Since the last publication, the following grants have
been awarded by Brixham Town Council:
Brixham Heritage Muesum
Brixham Foodbank
£5,000
£2,500
The Foodbank grant was a benefit in kind to cover
their annual rent with the remainder to purchase food.
And Brixham Museum‟s grant will go towards further grants for their new display areas.
In the July Brixham Signal it was reported that
Young Brixham were awarded a grant of £2,338.70.
Unfortunately their August event did not take place
and the funds have been returned to Brixham Town
Council.

STEERING GROUP DISCUSSIONS – 28th July 2015
Although the Police are now reporting directly to Brixham Town Council members agreed that there is still a
need for them to be represented at our public meetings
occasionally, especially if they want assistance on a
particular matter.
INFORMATION
We are now available on Facebook, which can be
found by searching for Brixham Community Partnership and then following the link. At the time of writing we are in regular contact with nearly 400 friends
so come and join us and keep up to date with lots of
local information, consultations and opinions.
It was agreed to make a donation of £300 to the Friends
of Shoalstone Pool.
Katherine Fallon and David Giles reported that while
there appears to be evidence of interest in showing
films in Brixham there have been insufficient offers of
assistance to enable the partnership to progress with the
Film Society analysis.
We are also on Twitter and can be found by going to
@ BrixhamCP and our e-mail address is [email protected]. Any of
these links can be used to make contact with the partnership.
Several local organisations have suggested that the
community partnership be the forum for all major public presentations of ideas and consultations. Members
agreed that the ideas are in line with BCP‟s current
thinking but each request would have to be looked at on
their merits, particularly if there were to be costs involved given our slender financial resources.

the press and our social media pages for details.
Brixham and Torquay Connections offices will be
closed for a trial period from Monday 5th October to
Monday 2nd November.
Members expressed some concern about the way that
the Brixham Peninsula Neighbourhood Plan is evolving
and were urged to become more involved in the process. It was agreed that the BPNP should form a central
theme at one of the partnership‟s forthcoming public
meetings.
Brixham Town Council will be keeping a log of any
increased footfall at the office during this period and
will be presenting it to Torbay Council as part of their
impact assessment.
All Connection enquiries will be dealt with either by
phoning 01803 207201 or visiting the Connections

Government Support Grant
Allotment Renewals
At the Finance & General Purposes Committee on 3rd
September, members discussed the allotment renewal
rates for the forthcoming year. In order to assess the
best and fairest rate for all allotment holders, every allotment was measured prior to the meeting.
We‟re not giving up.
That‟s the message from members of Brixham Town
Council. Torbay Council withheld £37,000 from Brixham Town Council in 2014/15 and £30,000 in 2015/16
tax years. It is also understood that Torbay Council‟s
Mayor is insistent that Torbay Council will not be passing on next years grant either.
The new rate will mean that where plots have only just
been measured, the allotment holders may see a higher
than average increase or decrease.
At the Full Council meeting on 3rd September members
met with Dr Sarah Wollaston and had a lengthy discussion on how to put pressure on Torbay Council to pass
Brixham‟s proportion of the Government Support Grant
on to Brixham Town Council.
Whilst Brixham Town Council recognises that the increases and decreases are significant for some plot
holders, the Council has decided to mitigate the impact
by spreading the new rental charges for these plot
holders over a couple of years rather than imposing
them fully at this stage.
Everyone at that meeting felt that it was a successful
and interesting debate and that Torbay Council cannot
continue to keep using the same reasons every year on
why they are not passing the allocated Government
Support Grant to Brixham.
Overall it is felt that the plot holders in Brixham have
enjoyed very good value for the rents that they have
been paying for several years but it is important that
the Council, and therefore our precept payers, are not
out of pocket in the future.
Brixham Town Council will be working with Dr Wollaston to ensure that a factual, informative and constructive letter is sent to Torbay Council emphasising the
full extent of the responsibilities of taking on the Town
Hall and Shoalstone Pool, which are assets the Town
Council and the community wanted saved, but they
don‟t come cheap.
The allotment renewals were due on 1st October and
agreements were issued to all allotment holders at the
beginning of September.

Community Flood Plan
Big Belly Bins
Boscastle‟s flash floods in 2004 prompted the Environment Agency to produce a model to identify other communities at risk from a similar event.
At the Planning and Regeneration Committee on Monday 7th September members resolved to recommend to
Full Council that Brixham Town Council pursues the
Big Belly Bins around the Harbour area as recommended by BrixhamFuture.
By looking at the topography of Brixham and its watercourses our community has been identified as “at risk.”
Brixham is also at risk from coastal flooding.
To help prepare our Community to mitigate the impact
of flooding, a small dedicated team of 4 local volunteers have been working with the Environment Agency
as well as Torbay and Brixham Councils to write a response plan.
The good news is we are nearly there with our plan.
Check out the Town Council website Community Flood
page there is all you need to know to prepare for a flood
plan and to find out if your home / area is at risk.
The bad news is we would not yet be ready if we do
have a problem in terms of helping those affected and
supporting our community in general. But we‟re looking into interim arrangements!
Can you help your Community, please?
We need practical and personal volunteers.
Call Ann Bruce 01803 857323 (personal) and / or Jez
Johnstone (practical/preventive) on 07792 966790
Practical / Preventive roles include observing problems and feeding back.
Preparing the town for flooding, assisting people who
may have to be evacuated from their homes and clearing up the town of debris following flooding.
Personal roles include networking with others, telephone warning cascade information should we need to
prepare, and supporting those who have had to relocate
from their homes at our emergency shelter (to be confirmed and on website asap).
We may need to support the elderly, Mums and Dads
with children and, of course, pets. It will only be for a
few hours, if it is a dire problem then the emergency
services will take over. Just a smiling face and sympathetic ear, cups of tea and so on!
Many thanks, we will have a
regular update in each issue.
Sincerely,
CERT
(Community Emergency Response Committee).

The Issue
Brixham is a victim of both its own success and of its
mixed heritage of fishing port and tourist destination.
During the season (May to September) in particular, the
town experiences huge uplifts in refuse and hence demands on refuse collection. Unfortunately, without
criticism of the local operators, the refuse collection
strategy fails to keep up with the demand, even though
the harbourside in particular benefits from 4 collections
daily. This leads to litter being dropped / deposited /
blown on the streets, around and in the harbour.
The main source of this litter is located in particular
around the harbour because our bins are in the main
open topped. This leads to our seagull population not
only aggressively attacking the litter on the streets and
sometimes the visitors, but actively removing as much
food / litter from the bins to satisfy their daily diets.
The Solution
Big Belly Bins have been introduced to seaside resorts
such as Sidmouth, Exmouth, Seaton, Bournemouth and
St Ives. Their solar panel produces enough power to
operate the mechanism inside which compresses all the
waste allowing for an increased capacity and advises
the refuse collectors when they are full. This therefore
helps clean up Brixham, improving the image and environment. It diminishes the opportunities that seagulls
have to feed as well as the seagull nuisance element.
The major benefit has to be the cost saving. There is
potential to reduce the total man hours by up to 50% on
refuse collection. This time can then be reallocated to
other key projects, for example; street cleaning, gardening etc.
What Next?
As mentioned at the start of this article, the recommendation still needs to go to Full Council. If at this meeting on 22nd October,
members resolve to pursue the Big Belly Bins,
the next step would be for
Brixham Town Council
representatives to meet
with representatives from
Torbay Council, TOR2
and Big Belly Solar Bins
Limited to work in partnership and discuss the
exact details in an effort to
implement this strategy.

New Litter Enforcement Pilot
Torbay Council launched a new enforcement pilot on
Tuesday 1st September. Enforcement staff from an
external company will be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for littering in Torbay (at no additional cost to
them).
A very common form of littering is dropping cigarette
butts and the enforcement staff will issue Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone witnessed littering. If you
smoke please take responsibility for your litter and
use a cigarette bin or an ashtray.
More information on this will be available shortly.
BrixhamFuture CIC Proposal
At the Planning and Regeneration Committee on
Monday 7th September members resolved to recommend to Full Council that BrixhamFuture apply to
become a Community Interest Company (CIC).
What is a CIC?
Community Interest Companies are a new type of limited company for people wishing to establish businesses which trade with a social purpose (social enterprises), or to carry on other activities for the benefit of
the community.
Why a CIC?
Becoming a CIC will allow BrixhamFuture to apply
for additional funding allowing them to fulfil some of
their future projects, without being solely reliant on
Brixham Town Council.
Brixham Rotarians have opened up a pop-up shop in
Brixham town centre.
Selling bric-a-brac, books, household goods, toys, puzzles and PAT-tested electrical goods and clothes, the
shop has been kindly offered to Brixham Rotary Club for
a short period.
The shop, located in 23 Fore Street, Brixham, opposite
Tesco Express, has already proved to be popular with
both visitors and locals.
Staffed by volunteers from Brixham Rotary and their
partners, together with Friends of Rotary and members of
the Brixham Inner Wheel Club, the shop is open daily
from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.
David Sharpe, Chairman of Brixham Rotary‟s Fundraising committee is the main organiser of the shop and
says: “We have had so many generous offers of goods to
stock the shop and we welcome more. Just pop into the
shop and let us know. We can arrange collection.”
“Money collected will go into our fundraising account
and will be distributed to local charities.”
John Burt, President of Brixham Rotary, said: “Thanks
to the owner, we have been given the use of this shop for
a temporary period. Once again, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of Brixham people and visitors.
Town Council Staff
“I‟d like to pay tribute to all our volunteers and in particular, David Sharpe, our fundraiser. It has proved to be a
full-time job for David and his wife, Marilyn.”
A vacancy has arisen at the Town Council for an Apprentice Admin Assistant following the departure of
Matty Wallcroft.
The shop, at 8-10 Fore Street, Brixham, opens daily from
10.00 am to 3.00 pm.
At the time of going to press the Evaluation Committee had agreed to readvertise for an apprentice and the
advert was due to go on the National Apprenticeship
Matching Service website. It is hoped that a new
member of staff will start in the office at the beginning of October.
Tradesman
With a large building to maintain, Brixham Town
Council is always looking for reliable, conscientious
and hardworking tradesmen. If you are a handyman,
electrician, plumber, builder for example, please contact the Town Council. A new database has been created and we want to keep your contact details on file.
This will give the Town Council an opportunity to
ensure that the most cost effective quote has been received for each job.
Donations of good quality items are welcome, crockery,
kitchenware, books, clothing and toys are all required.
Please call at the shop, or collection can be made. Call

Brixham Gig Club Regatta
Brixham Gig Club held their annual gig regatta on the
Breakwater beach on Saturday 22nd August. Despite
the low turnout due to visiting clubs cancelling at the
last minute the event was very successful with crews
from Cattewatter, Dartmouth, Salcombe, Teignmouth
and Paignton attending.
A family fun day that was
held at Brixham Rugby Club
on Saturday 18th July helped
raise over £1500 for Leonard
Cheshire Disability Douglas
House in Brixham.
This year saw a slight change to the course from last
year with a longer first leg but this made for the last
700 meters finishing along the Breakwater.
Douglas House would like to
thank everyone who donated
prizes, volunteered, attended
our event or helped in any
way. Caroline Cheetham the
Day Care Co-ordinator at
Douglas House said "We were overwhelmed
by everyone's kindness and generosity that made the
event such a success and it was lovely to see members
of our fantastic community enjoying themselves on
the day. Our residents and staff cannot thank everyone enough who supported us. The money you all
helped us raise will go towards sensory equipment that will develop and enrich the lives of our residents and service users".
Brixham Gig Club would like to thank all of those
who made the day a success including visiting clubs,
the beach team at Breakwater beach, Brixham Harbour authority, all the sponsors of the event and the
friends and family of Brixham Gig Club.
Now that the regatta season has finished the club will
wrap up the season at the Newquay championships
before taking a break for work to the boats in October
and then starting training for the 2016 season in November. We would encourage anyone interested in
rowing or sponsorship of the club to please get involved and get in touch. Our contact details can be
found on our website www.brixhamgigclub.co.uk
Special thanks goes to Brixham Rugby Club who allowed us to use their venue. Keedie, Chris Brooks
Comedy Act & Cast, Kyu Ajkijusti martial arts team
and The Mencap singers who kept everyone entertained with their brilliant performances. Torbay Owls
and Party Ponies were also there to enjoy the day with
us and the Rugby Club provided a BBQ along
with Soroptomist International Brixham who supplied
delicious homemade cakes. Indigos Go Wild joined in
the fun by face painting. A bouncy castle and assault
course kept the younger ones busy. The positive feedback we have received regarding the event has been
fantastic and we hope to hold the event again in 2016.
If you would like to make a difference at Douglas
House by volunteering with us, there are a wide range
of opportunities available, then please contact Lorraine or Caroline on 01803 856333 or e-mail [email protected]. Thank you.

ACE
The summer term was very
busy. The lovely organisers
of the Torbay Motor Show
presented us with a cheque
for £4000 – thank you so
much. We had our end of
term Barbeque and plant sale
in glorious weather and another lovely day for our annual outing, this year to Torre Abbey. A very interesting day and the staff in the house and café were so
helpful.

All classes are taught by a South Devon College Tutor and supported by a qualified Care Worker and
volunteers. Taxis can be arranged to bring you to
your class from anywhere in Torbay.
ACE is a charity run by and for people with physical
disabilities. We enable members to enjoy learning
and social activities that are often a challenge because of cost, transport and no support.
Members value ACE for many reasons, from the
sense of belonging , they make friends and gain the
satisfaction that comes from learning and being active and having an outlet for creativity.
The Motor Show team held another show, Power on
the Prom in July and we were again designated as
one of the charities. Thank you so much.
ACE is about achievement, the emphasis being on
what we can do, not what we can‟t.
We were asked to attend the Brixham Proms in August, a lovely nostalgic, well attended evening, and
all proceeds will be given to Pride of Brixham and
ACE –many thanks again.
If you have, or know of someone with, a disability
that is a barrier to getting out, contact Yvonne, the
ACE Administrator, at Brixham Adult & Community Leaning Centre on 01803 853302 or email
[email protected] for more information and
membership details.

Time to Celebr-Eight Those Musical
Memories with Brixham Does Care
Fore Street 200 The Bicentenary of
Fore Street Methodist Church
Following their very successful Summer Fair, where the
fabulous sum of £1,208.10 was raised, preparations are
underway for Brixham Does Care‟s annual fundraising
variety show, “Memories Are Made Of This” at the Berry Head Hotel on Wednesday 7th October 2015.
If you have ever noticed the date above the door of the
Methodist Church in Fore Street (1816), you will know
that it is very nearly 200 years since the chapel was
built. A group of Brixham (we presume) fishermen, began worshipping together regularly in 1812 in a room in
Bolton Street where Watermill Court now stands. The
Methodist Society grew rapidly and when the room became too small they decided to build a chapel on a site
in Fore Street from which 10 years previously the Baptists had quarried the stone for their chapel - God does
indeed move in mysterious ways!
This year‟s event will be the 8th show co-hosted by the
befriending charity‟s Chairman, Martyn Paddon and stalwart supporter Jim Hopkinson. They will be joined by
duo Alison & Mike Neal, vocalist Derek James, guitarist
Rick Courtney, songstress Rebecca Clifton and the globe
-trotting dancers from Totnes School Of Dance, who
have just returned from a successful trip to Bucharest in
Romania, competing in the Dance World Cup. A raffle
completes the 3 hour entertainment, which starts promptly at 7.30pm. Doors open 6.45pm, drinks and snacks are
available from the Mulberry Room bar.
Tickets £6 from BDC Office 01803 857727.
Brixham Horticultural Society
At the end of July the Scala Hall was transformed into a
blaze of colour by our annual SUMMER FLOWER
AND VEGETABLE SHOW. The outstanding display of
Fuchsias, Geraniums, Pelargonium's, Roses and Dahlias
together with the amazing Floral Art was a sight to behold! The star of the show was undoubtedly Marion Parker who won so many silver cups for her Fuchsias and
Geraniums she needed help to carry them home! With
over 500 entries, space was at a premium for the wide
variety of vegetables and fruit and competition was running high. In particular, the Heaviest Bag of Potatoes
challenge was great fun and was won by Mr Mike Smith
closely followed by his wife Eileen. We were all given a
single seed potato to grow in a black plastic bag which
was emptied and weighed at the show. The prize was a
potato peeler!
Today's Methodists will be celebrating the 200th anniversary and much that came after, during 2016. We will
start with our annual Covenant Service in January and
end with a Christmas Tree Festival in December; in between there will be many other events including a celebration for those who were married in the chapel, a
weekend for the young people who grew up and learnt
about Jesus here, a Flower Festival and services led by
past Ministers and past Presidents' of Conference. A
Town Service will be held in October, led by our recently retired Minister Rev. Jerry Cook
Look out for publicity as the year proceeds and please
come and join us, believer or not, to celebrate this part
of the life of our town - the Church in the Centre!
The mouth watering cakes included - Victoria Sponges,
Date & Walnut Loaves, Biscuits, Parkin (made by the
men!) Fruit Flans and Loaves of delicious
bread. Colourful jars of Jams and Marmalade too. There
were some very clever and original items on the Arts and
Crafts table including a shoulder bag and purse made
from re-cycled Sainsbury's carrier bags! If you missed
it, why not come along to the AUTUMN SHOW which
is on the 16th and 17th October. Come and see if you
can do better!
Our monthly meetings are held in the Catholic Church
Hall, New Road, on the first Wednesday of the month
starting at 2pm with a friendly cup of tea and a biscuit. The September talk will be given by an old favourite of the society, Mr John Harvey and is entitled 101
Gardening Tips.
New members are always welcome. Tel: (01803) 856531.

Brixham Fairtrade Group
Riviera Singers
After a fairly quite summer for us, the Fairtrade Group
are back in action. Early in October we visited ACE, at
the Community College to talk about Fairtrade. We
have fun with the Snakes and Ladders game and discovered together the outlets in Brixham and the kind of
Fairtrade goods they sell, not just coffee, tea, sugar and
chocolate! But rather rubber gloves, soap, cleaning fluids and gold, the list goes on!
The Riviera Singers, a Brixham based ladies choir, performed in Churston Church on Friday the 18th September @7.30pm as part of their Agatha Christie week celebrations. They were joined by performances from
members of the Junior Church choir, BOADS and 2
local young musicians.
If you don‟t know the Fairtrade version of Snakes and
Ladders, it involves good and bad news - the good news
when you go up a ladder, the bad news when you come
down a snake!
As well as performing for several local groups and
Charities in the run up to Christmas the choir will also
be performing with the Orpheus male voice choir at
their "Sing Christmas concert at St Mary's Church on
Saturday 12th December @7pm.
Eg: BAD NEWS: You are a banana farmer selling to
conventional markets and the price you get for your bananas drops due to price wars in the UK supermarkets.
GOOD NEWS: As a Fairtrade banana grower, you‟ve
now started to diversify what you grow on your farm
and have started to sell Fairtrade coconuts too.
A few days later we held a successful Coffee Morning
in the Christian Community Centre, when not only did
we raise money, but we also invited the Brixham
Fairtrade suppliers to come to collect the certificates we
have designed for them to display on their premises.
By displaying the certificates beforehand, this also gave
members of the public an opportunity to discover just
who uses or sells Fairtrade products (and who
doesn‟t?)!!
Our next project is a meeting on World Women‟s Day
on 8th March. All over the world women are involved
in businesses, small and large, including of course
Fairtrade businesses - and World Women‟s Day is during Fairtrade Fortnight!! More details of that in the
next Signal.
Finally, did you know that you could buy jewellery
made out of Fairtrade Gold? April Doubleday in
Monkleigh, North Devon creates engagement and wedding rings from Fairtrade gold and conflict free diamonds - what a beautiful way to show love for each
other by caring for those who produce the raw materials
for your rings.

Brixham Orpheus Male Voice Choir
The choir summer season followed the tradition of three
concerts on the quayside, with the additional treat of
performances by Brixham‟s own Shanty Group,
“Missing Tackle”, most of whom are choir members.
Collections were taken at each concert for local charities, as was the case at the ever popular “Proms” night
when the choir joined forces with the Town Band. This
special evening always seems to epitomise the Brixham
“family” feeling.
The Autumn schedule begins on 3rd October with a visit to Saltash as Guests of the Saltash Ladies Choir. Two
local treats are the visit of the Tregadillett Ladies choir
at Brixham Baptist Church on Saturday 31st October
and the return of the Plymouth Military Wives Choir at
Central Church, Torquay on Saturday 21st November.
The year is rounded off with a “sing Christmas” at St.
Mary‟s Church on Saturday 12th December when the
Choir will be joined by the Riviera Singers and the pupils of Brixham Church of England Primary School.
Another truly Brixham occasion.
Why not become involved with the choir, which does
so much of local charities? You can do this by either
becoming a member of the “Friends” of the Choir (Ring
Danny on 859218) or by coming along to a Thursday
practice. You will be made most welcome.
