Fall 2011 Career Fair
The Career Development Center is excited to
announce that the Fall Career Fair will be held on
Thursday, September 22nd, 10am - 2:30pm in the SJU
Athletics Center.
We are expecting over 150 employers from a variety
of organizations (corporate, nonprofit and
government) who are hiring students for full time,
internship, co-op, part time and volunteer/service
opportunities.
5th Annual HFMA Fall Institute
The healthcare environment today faces challenges that it has never seen before. The
industry is under attack from every possible direction from cost containment, HIPAA
(Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) compliance, lack of stability, to an
uncertain future. Healthcare professionals need to be able to react quickly in this everchanging environment.
To assist in this endeavor, the Program and Education Committee would like to invite you
to our 5th Annual Fall Institute being held on the campus of the University of
Pennsylvania. Our day begins with a panel discussion focusing on Healthcare Information
Exchanges (HIE) Development. A brief interlude into Hospital Consolidation will lead us
into six separate timely and relevant breakout sessions covering topics from a Pennsylvania
Medicaid Panel discussion to Value Based Purchasing to revisiting Healthcare reform,
focusing on ACOs. Our day ends with Dr. William Hanson discussing his book “Smart
Medicine - How the Changing Role of Doctors Will Revolutionize Health Care.”

Health Services Faculty In the Spotlight:

Dr. David B. White, PhD., MPH, Professor of Health Services and Dr. John J. Newhouse, EdD, MS,
Assistant Professor of Health Services presented a poster entitled “Utilizing the Obama – Biden Health
Care Reform Process to Redesign. Health Care Reform Policy Curriculum” at the Annual Association of
University Programs in Health Administration Meeting to be head in Charleston, S.C., June 23-26,
2011.

On June 15, 2011, Dr. Sally Kuykendall presented, "Implementation and Evaluation of Caregivers Helping
to Affect and Nurture Children Early (CHANCE) program: A family violence prevention program for early care
and education providers" at Stockholm Criminology Symposium in Stockholm, Sweden. The
presentation was co-authored by Ann Adalist-Estrin of the National Resource Center for the Children
and Families of the Incarcerated and Martha Davis and Sandy Dempsey of the Institute for Safe
Families.
Health Services New Online Faculty Highlights
•
Matthew Sobel, MPH, brings several years of managerial experience in the pharmaceutical industry and
industrial laboratory settings. His main fields of interest include Epidemiology, Preventative Medicine and
Integrative Medicine.
•
Karen Tepe, MHA, MBA has 20 years of operational experience in the healthcare industry ranging from
Revenue Cycle to Health Information Management.
•
Patricia Ingerick, MBA is an expert in the field of health care informatics. She is currently the Manager, at
Capital BlueCross in Harrisburg, PA where she is involved in improving the operational functions of the
various Clinical Management departments including Case and Disease Management, Utilization
Management, Appeals and Quality/Accreditation. In addition to a MBA, she is a lean six sigma certified as
well as a certified information system security professional (CISSP)

Dr. Ilene Warner-Maron is a practicing Registered Nurse for over 30 years, specializing in geriatrics. She also has
additional degrees in Sociology, Social Gerontology, Health Administration, Low and Social Policy and a PhD in Health
Policy. Her fields of inquiry have been the prevention of HIV in older adults, the prevention and treatment of pressure
ulcers and the equitable delivery of care to older adults at the end of life.

Michelle Crumlich, MBA has 20 years of experience in the various different areas of the health care industry. She is
currently at Capital BlueCross in Harrisburg, PA as a Business Analyst/Senior Health Services Researcher.

Tamika Curry, MSN, RN, has 7 years of nursing work experience. Having worked in the field of nursing for several
years, Tamika joined the faculty of the Community College of Philadelphia as an Assistant Professor to teaching in their
nursing program. She is the author of several abstracts related to nursing care and has presented her work at regional
meetings.

Paul Miller, Jr., MHA has 20 years of experience in the health care industry. He has held a variety of management
positions in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Paul also worked for Pierce College for 4 years as an Assistant
Professor and Department Head for the healthcare management program. Paul currently works for a plastic surgery
practice in southern New Jersey as the practice administrator.

Robert K. Johnson, J.D., Indiana University (1983) concentrates his practice on the intersection of public policy and
regulated industries, particularly in the areas of health care, communications and energy. He represents consumer groups,
governmental agencies and regulated entities in the areas of compliance, licensing and market structure. He is a frequent
speaker and contributor on these issues, as well as an invited witness before Congressional committees.
Student Testimonial
As cliché as it sounds I knew I wanted to be in healthcare since I was a child. My mother has been a nurse
for the past 35 years and I guess you could say she was my inspiration. Having a strong interest in helping
people and chemistry, but not so much for the blood aspect, I went into Nutrition and Dietetics. I became a
Registered Dietitian in 2009 and have truly loved it. Being the sole clinical dietitian in a long-term care facility of
229-beds has quickly pulled me into the department head role. Attending daily management meetings and
working with an interdisciplinary team on a regular basis left me wanting more out of my career. I wanted more
of a say in the decisions that affected my patients. I quickly started researching schools in the Philadelphia area
that offered some sort of management curriculum. I then came across St. Joe’s Masters’ in Health Administration
program and knew it was exactly what I was looking for! I knew I wanted to increase my foundation in
management and become more competitive in my career; this was my chance!
I’ve recently started my second year in the program and have found that I’m growing in my skills every
week. The classes I’ve taken so far have challenged me to think outside of the box and apply the skills I’ve already
mastered. The assignments don’t include memorizing facts but rather applying the knowledge that you already
know. We stay up-to-date on current events and have open discussions weekly on our perceptions of the everchanging health field. St. Joe’s MHA program is preparing me to lead others in an innovative and versatile
manner. I feel confident in my abilities to manage a situation in whatever path of management I pursue. The
healthcare industry needs strong and innovative thinkers to uphold it’s ever-changing nature. I truly believe that
the students that come out of St. Joe’s program will be strong in their leadership skills and ready to take on the
healthcare industry. I know I will!
