FROM THE DESK
OF JORDAN RUBIN
Everything old is new again. Eventually,
great ideas that have been long forgotten
will find the light of day and be considered
revolutionary. After all, they are great ideas.
As I researched my new book, The Raw
Truth, I hit upon the idea of starting each
chapter with a “Legend of Health.” The idea
basically springs from the fact that most of the
“new” health trends were actually espoused
years ago by forward thinking individuals
who served as the pioneers of our modern
natural health movement. They championed
this message in the face of great adversity and
even ridicule from the conventional medical
establishment.
Take, for instance, Dr. Élie Metchnikoff.
He is known as the “Father of Probiotics,” yet the word probiotics didn’t even exist when he
made his seminal discovery. He set out to study Bulgarians from the Caucasus Mountains to

find out why they lived twice as long as their European counterparts. He surmised that it
had to do with the raw, fermented dairy drink they consumed on an almost daily basis.
He theorized that the good bacteria from the beverage somehow balanced out the bad bacteria
in the gut. Almost 100 years ago, he outlined our modern understanding of probiotics. You can
read more about his amazing story on page 24.
Élie Metchnikoff is but one example of a health legend. In this edition, you can also read
about a man who walked the plains of Africa as a missionary doctor, and “accidentally”
discovered the health benefits of the indigestible remnants of plants known as fiber as being
of great benefit to digestive health. You will also find out about a doctor who unlocked the key
to enzyme nutrition, and an Iranian political prisoner who discovered the curative powers of
water since it was the only “medicine” he was allowed to “prescribe” as a prison doctor.
One man whose approach I would describe as “legendary” is board-certified
gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph Brasco. I have been friends with Dr. Brasco for over 12 years,
and I love that he combines cutting edge medical research and technology with a heartfelt
belief that diet and nutrition are the keys to wellness. Dr. Brasco contributes a great article
focusing on digestive health, which goes along perfectly with our gut-friendly recipes that are
both delicious and nutritious.
Finally, our cover story for this edition of Extraordinary Health focuses on the RAW food
movement and the people who are shaping it. To me, the most interesting element of their
stories is how they came to be leaders when they started as pupils. Some of them have “gone
raw” for health reasons, some for ethical reasons, but they have all decided to carry the banner
and shout from the mountain tops about the benefits of living RAW. Thirty years years from
now, I am willing to bet that one or more of them will be
4
hailed as a “Legend of Health.” After all, everything old is
new again.

The Quest to Develop the World’s
Healthiest Protein
by Jason Longman
T
he consumption of protein has achieved legendary diet
status. While it has long been known that protein intake is
vitally important to life, it wasn’t until the high protein, low
carbohydrate craze of the 1990s that protein truly became a
shining star.
Long before diet fads, though, discerning individuals understood the
importance of healthy sources of protein in their diets. Responsible for
building and repairing tissue, protein is the most plentiful substance
found in the body—after water. Protein adds up to one-fifth of your
body weight and is the major constituent of most living cells and
body fluids.
Protein builds strong bodies, burns fat, repairs the daily wear of
vital muscles, and replaces body chemicals—something that the body’s
other macronutrients (fat and carbohydrates) are unable to do. It stands
to reason that providing your body with a healthy source of protein
is important. The key word here is healthy. In fact, entire cultures
existed—and thrived—on diets comprised primarily of healthy sources
of protein. So the question is: what defines a healthy source of protein?
THE CONCEPT OF COMPLETE PROTEIN
The concept of the complete protein is fairly easy to understand.
First of all, it’s generally regarded that eight amino acids are
essential for healthy adults. They are essential because the body
cannot manufacture them on its own,
requiring that they come through diet.
A complete protein source, then, is one
that contains all eight of those amino
acids in the amounts your body requires.
While proteins are contained in most
of the foods we eat, only animal sources
of protein contain all eight essential
amino acids in the amounts that our
bodies require. So logically it follows that
animal sources of protein are healthiest,
12 correct? Well, yes and no.
†
For insight into this issue, consider Dr. Weston A. Price, a man
who—in the 1930s—devoted his life to observing the health of remote
cultures that were basically cut off from the outside world and lived on
their indigenous or historical diets. He found that many of these cultures
thrived on diets made up primarily of animal proteins, nuts, seeds and
grains. In fact, many of them ate raw animal protein, be it raw fish or
even meat. And there’s the rub. Not only were the animals caught in the
wild—with none of the antibiotics or added hormones that have become
mainstays in our food chain now—but they often ate them raw.
For even the most dedicated sushi lover, eating a diet composed
almost solely of raw animal protein is a tough act to swallow. However,
there was wisdom in the diets of these ancient cultures. Those raw
sources of animal protein were loaded with enzymes, probiotics and
fat-soluble vitamins. Cooking that animal protein would destroy many
of those nutrients, alter some other ones, or at the very least reduce the
amounts of the rest. Fundamentally speaking, eating animal protein
raw was the best way to ensure that those cultures were getting the full
complement of nutrients that protein-rich foods offered.
Of course, there are only a few among us who could stomach an
entirely raw animal protein diet, which is why Jordan Rubin and his
team at Garden of Life® have created the
groundbreaking formulations known as
RAW Protein and RAW Meal.
PLANTING THE SEEDS
OF INNOVATION
Consider the definition of raw.
RAW means uncooked, untreated and
unadulterated. It also means no binders,
fillers, synthetic ingredients or isolates.
RAW truly defines pure and even more
so if the product is certified organic.
It’s also easy to see why finding a quality,
pure, raw and organic form of protein is
so difficult.
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
There is, however, a solution for those seeking a quality
source of raw protein to supplement their diets. Remember
two things we learned earlier. One, that the body requires
eight essential amino acids. Two, that there are other sources
of complete proteins besides animal proteins.
Armed with those two facts, Garden of Life has created
two raw protein supplement solutions that provide the power
of complete raw nutrition. By combining many organic, raw
sources of protein in exactly the right proportions, Jordan
Rubin and his research and development team have been able
to create a raw protein powder with all of the amino acids—in
the proper amounts—that your body requires.
Both RAW Protein and RAW Meal contain over a
dozen different sprouted, gluten-free grains and seeds. RAW
Protein offers 18 grams of protein per serving, and RAW Meal
offers a whopping 33 grams of protein per serving. That alone
makes them both excellent sources of raw protein.
There is still one thing to consider when choosing a protein.
You see, when you consume protein found in nature, you’re
getting a lot more than just protein. It follows that a great
protein supplement should allow you to do the same.
BEYOND PROTEIN
When you consume raw protein found in nature, be it plant
or animal, you get a lot more than just protein. Raw protein
foods contain enzymes and probiotics as well as beneficial
fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K. In fact, all of these
components work together to make protein utilization effective.
We call this complete protein utilization system the “Protein Code™,” and
it is found only in Garden of Life® RAW Protein and Garden of Life® RAW
Meal. To emulate the constituents of a healthy protein food in nature, you
need four components:
1. The protein comes from a RAW,
un-denatured source.
2. The protein contains live enzymes, including proteases aiding in the digestion and utilization of protein.
3. The protein contains probiotics.
4. The protein contains RAW food-created, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
Only RAW Protein and RAW Meal formulas are uncooked, untreated and
unadulterated protein sources that contain all of the fat-soluble vitamins A,
D, E and K as well as its protein-digesting enzymes and immune- and
digestive-supporting probiotics.
The importance of consuming live probiotics and enzymes with your
protein is critical. In order for your body to get the most out of it, you must
first break down and then absorb the protein. Certain enzymes, known as
proteases, help digest protein so that your body can properly use it. While
your body can produce protein-digesting enzymes, raw foods provide both

the protein and the enzymes for utilization together as they should be.
Probiotics, on the other hand, are needed after the enzymes go to work.
Probiotics aid digestion by making it easier for the nutrients from our diets
to be absorbed—and later used—by the body. Again, raw foods contain
probiotics that aid this process. So should your raw protein supplement.
When it comes to fat-soluble vitamins, nature once again shows its
perfection. A look at the most powerful food sources of vitamins A, D,
E and K—foods like fish oil, liver, dairy and eggs—is also a list of some
of the best sources of protein for your body. It’s no accident that high
protein foods are some of the richest sources of fat-soluble vitamins.
Unfortunately, virtually all available protein powders contain little or
none of these powerful nutrients.
That’s why Garden of Life is proud to introduce two incredible RAW
protein formulas that combine all the essential elements of the best raw,
whole food protein sources. Garden of Life RAW Protein and RAW
Meal are RAW, vegan and certified organic, and both come complete
with essential amino acids, probiotics, enzymes and fat-soluble vitamins.
They contain no fillers or synthetic ingredients and are always uncooked,
untreated and unadulterated. They are dairy- and gluten-free with no
soy allergens.
In short, they go beyond protein. That means you can finally get the
RAW plant-based protein you want with the essential amino acids you
need and without any of the undesirable ingredients contained in most
protein and meal replacement powders.
WHY SPROUTING?
Both RAW Protein and RAW Meal from Garden of Life
provide their protein in the form of sprouted seeds and
grains. Sprouting is the process whereby seeds and grains
are germinated and, in essence, brought back to life.
The late enzyme expert Dr. Edward Howell noted that
sprouted foods increased enzyme and nutrient activity.
These enzymes acted upon the seeds and grains to make
them more digestible. In short, the enzymes activated in the
sprouting process work to pre-digest the food, making it
more body friendly.
Sprouting also deactivates a compound known as phytic
acid, which is found in the coats of many seeds. Phytic acid
can bind with minerals that are important to the body and
block their absorption into the bloodstream.
Sprouting is a process that has been used for centuries
to make seeds and grains easier to digest—and to increase
the bioavailability of their nutrients. Toward that end, every
plant, seed or grain contained in RAW Protein and RAW
Meal undergoes a sprouting process. This makes Garden of
Life RAW Protein or Garden of Life RAW Meal the obvious
choice for those looking for a highly nutritious, nutrientdense, easily digestible and high-quality protein.

When we caught up with Jenny McCarthy recently during a media tour
for her latest book Love, Lust & Faking It (HarperCollins, 2010), she was
effortlessly entertaining a spellbound audience with bittersweet memories
of love and romance. Looking svelte, sexy and lively at the Epic Hotel in South
Beach, the blunt television personality best known for her ribald humor, kept
an adoring crowd chuckling for most of the evening as she dished up details
about her most nightmarish relationships and how she’s been able to laugh at
her mistakes and move on. She also tackled several health issues, including
how she overcame being a chocoholic and the challenges of raising her
seven-year-old son, Evan, who was diagnosed
with autism in 2005.
“At one point, I was eating so much chocolate that I found myself having
to work out more and more because of it,” she said. “I also had issues with
Candida and finally just had to stop eating chocolate.”
McCarthy also talked about the heartbreak, struggles and triumphs she
has experienced while battling her son’s autism. The New York Times bestselling author has written a series of six books on raising children with autism and is a prominent
spokesperson and activist for Generation Rescue, (www.generationrescue.com) an international
movement of scientists, parents and physicians researching the causes and treatments for autism,
ADHD and chronic illness. In her first book about autism, Louder than Words (Dutton, 2007) she
discussed many of the therapies, food, treatments and supplements that she included in her son’s
daily regimen, including Garden of Life’s top-selling probiotic formula, Primal Defense®.
“Primal Defense rocks!” said McCarthy, when we presented her with the product at her book

“Chances are you’ve heard of Kellogg’s cereal. The story begins with John Harvey
Kellogg, who was born in 1852 to a farming family in rural Michigan. . .
He decided he wanted to go to medical school so that he could change the direction
of medicine. Kellogg attended the prestigious Bellevue Hospital Medical College in
New York City, and in 1875, he earned his M.D. He promptly returned to Battle Creek to start his practice.
Dr. Kellogg became a highly skilled surgeon who operated on thousands of colons, (he said that
only one percent were healthy) and became a prolific author on a variety of health topics.
Remember, he always wanted to change the direction of health care. Kellogg wasn’t a shrinking
violet afraid to share his opinions, and many of his ideas were ahead of his time.
He recommended eating whole grain foods, urged urban families to get enough sunlight,
warned of the dangers of eating pork, and believed longevity was directly related to a healthy diet, exercise, vitamins and reducing stress.”

EMPOWERING EXTRAORDINARY HEALTH®
If two words would ever go together, you’d think they
would be raw and cleanse. Raw denotes ingredients that are
uncooked, untreated and unadulterated. Cleanse signifies a
purification of the body to facilitate the removal of toxins.
The idea of cleansing has grown in popularity over the last
several years as Americans have become increasingly aware
of the toxic environment we live in.
Since raw is such an important purity standard, it makes
sense that there would be a raw cleansing formula available
to consumers, but that hasn’t been the case. There are
hundreds of websites that tout cleansing through raw diets
and recipes. In fact, the idea of cleansing the body with raw,
living foods has been around for over a century.
Since many people choose to incorporate cleansing in
their lives, you would think there would be a raw cleansing
supplement for those embarking on a raw food-cleansing
program. The fact of the matter, however, is that for many
nutritional companies, cost and availability of effective raw
ingredients are an issue. Sourcing all of the raw ingredients
necessary to create a raw cleanse product is undeniably
costly and time-consuming.
Raw should be the ultimate standard for cleanse
ingredients, but it hasn’t been that way. That has changed,
however, thanks to a new breakthrough formula, Garden
of Life® RAW Cleanse™.
RAW: The Ultimate Standard in
Cleansing and Detoxification
For those looking for the ultimate cleanse experience, raw
has always represented “the standard.” Raw foods and juices
are foundational elements of virtually every cleansing and

RAW Cleanse—Triple Detox Formula
Setting Up a RAW Defense
A high-quality cleanse must accomplish several goals, starting with the
removal of unwanted toxins from the body.† A top-notch cleanse should
also aid the body’s natural defense mechanisms to repel toxins so they won’t
enter the body and bloodstream.†
It will surprise you to learn that most of the hundreds of cleanses on the
market miss this crucial starting point of cleansing, which is a shame since the
point of cleansing is to remove toxins from the body in order to aid digestion
and overall health.† Well, where does digestion begin? Answer: the mouth,
where food—and many toxins—first enter the body.
Toxin Defense, the first step in RAW Cleanse, contains a unique oral
probiotic known as S. salivarius. Much like the skirmishes being fought in
the gut, there’s a war going on in your mouth between various microorganisms.
S. salivarius has the ability to promote healthy microorganisms in the mouth.†
Other microorganisms produce toxins that interfere with the normal function
of the body. By taking up space in the mouth S. salivarius helps keep those
microorganisms from setting up camp in the oral cavity, thereby providing an
excellent first line of defense against toxins. Toxin Defense also includes the
digestive probiotic Bacillus coagulans. This powerful probiotic provides
support for the gastrointestinal tract, another breeding ground for toxic
microorganisms. Much like S. salivarius, Bacillus coagulans works to reduce
toxic load by inhibiting potentially toxic microorganisms from travelling
further in the body and allowing your digestive system to
function at its best.†
Toxin Defense is the first component of the RAW Cleanse
equation. While minimizing the exposure to toxic invaders is an

Cleaning House with
RAW Organ Detox
The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body.
All blood passes through the liver, and one of the many jobs the liver
performs is removing toxins from the blood. Most cleanses work to
remove toxins on the “macro” level, which means they’re concerned
with removing the major toxins in the liver, kidneys and other organs.
One of the “macro” ingredients in Organ Detox is raw chlorella, a
green algae that aids the liver in excreting environmental toxins that
the body is normally exposed to in small amounts.†
Organ Detox also contains milk thistle, which has been used in
traditional medicine for thousands of years, and is found in many
cleanse and liver detox formulas. Unlike most other cleanses, the
milk thistle found in Organ Detox is RAW.
The real superstar ingredients—not found in other cleanse
formulations—are the intra-cellular antioxidant trio of glutathione,
SOD and catalase. As research continues to unveil the importance
of antioxidants, none may be as important as glutathione.
We know that antioxidants work at the cellular level to combat free
radicals that damage cells. If we had to define one reason why toxins
are bad, it may be because they lead to oxidative stress within the
body, causing a proliferation of free radicals.
Where the human body is concerned, glutathione is at its highest
concentration in the liver. As the collection point of toxins, the liver
is prone to oxidative stress and damage from free radicals. Since the
liver also has the ability to manufacture glutathione, four ingredients
were added to Organ Detox to boost the body’s ability to manufacture
glutathione and aid in the detoxification process.† These ingredients
in Organ Detox are raw food-created cysteine, glycine, sulfur and
glutamic acid, which are building blocks your body uses to create its
own storehouse of glutathione.
Organ Detox also contains the antioxidant enzymes SOD
(superoxide dismutase) and catalase. These enzymes are active at
the cellular level to limit the effects of oxygen radicals.† Oxygen is
vital for normal body function, but too much oxygen, not efficiently
utilized by the body, can cause damage. These enzymes work to
minimize the effects of oxygen radicals at the cellular level.†
RAW foods and juices are the cornerstones
of virtually every cleansing and detox program
developed by the forerunners of the natural health
movement. RAW is ‘where health is going’ and is
truly beyond organic. . .I have really enjoyed developing this unique formulation and am proud to
introduce RAW Cleanse as Garden of Life’s latest
innovation in total digestive health.
”
Jordan Rubin, Founder and CEO of Garden of Life®
The net effect of these ingredients in the RAW Cleanse Organ Detox
formula is that they support your liver to do what it was made to do—remove
toxins from your blood.†
Batting Clean-Up: RAW Digestion
& Elimination
Cleansing doesn’t end with toxins being eliminated from the
bloodstream. To hasten the removal process, most cleanse programs
contain ingredients that help elimination. RAW Digestion & Elimination is
unique because it’s made with RAW ingredients.
RAW Digestion & Elimination was created for toxin capture and removal.
This unique formulation starts with RAW food-chelated magnesium, which
attracts water to the colon, allowing for the natural movement of intestinal
bulk.† This differs from other laxatives that “force” muscle contractions along
the digestive tract to move waste.
RAW Digestion & Elimination also contains two superfoods—flaxseed
and chia seed—providing omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Besides being highly
nutritious, these bulking fibers are great for trapping toxins for removal from
the body.† Additionally, RAW Digestion & Elimination contains four different
cereal grass juices that are nutritional powerhouses and traditional cleansing
agents. They support the proper function of a healthy gastrointestinal tract
and help maintain regularity, which is important when you’re trying to move
toxins out of the body.†
Finally, RAW Digestion & Elimination contains one more unique
ingredient, providing beneficial fatty acids and fiber from RAW organic
coconut. Not only is coconut a healthy source of fiber, it also contains healthy
fats known as MCFAs (medium-chain fatty acids).† Both the fiber and the
good fats are helpful in facilitating effective movement of intestinal bulk.

DECEPTION
PART 2
by Jeffrey M. Smith
I
n our last edition of Extraordinary Health, we featured the first part of an exposé
on GM (genetically modified) foods. At Garden of Life®, we’re committed to
procuring raw materials that are non-GMO, and we believe you, our consumers,
are best served by this policy. We are more than a supplement company, though,
and we believe that knowledge is foremost in attaining extraordinary health.
Therefore, you should be well-informed about GM foods. That’s why we asked
Jeffrey M. Smith—who is at the forefront of the debate on the use of GM crops—to
continue to share his insight into what’s happening in the world of GM foods.
Last issue, we looked at the shocking
truth behind GM foods and the huge effort
by governments and biotech corporations
to keep information out of the mainstream
media—and outside of your awareness. This
time, let’s peer into some of the health risks
associated with GM foods:
Infant Mortality and
Reproductive Disorders
It’s rather appalling. When GM soy flour
was given to female rats, most of their
babies died within three weeks. For those
that survived, they were smaller and had
future fertility problems. Likewise, male rats
fed GM soy or corn experienced testicular
discoloration, damaged sperm cells, DNA
function alterations, fewer offspring and
smaller babies.
Some U.S. farmers say that thousands
of their pigs, cows, or bulls experienced
reproductive complications including
infertility or sterility after GM corn
consumption. In India, most buffalo that ate
GM cottonseed also had reproductive issues,
including premature deliveries, abortions,
infertility or prolapsed uteruses. Additionally,
many calves died.
Interestingly, in the U.S. population,
the incidence of low birth weight babies,
infertility, and infant mortality are all
escalating. That coincides with increased
GM food intake.
The Killing Fields of GMOs
From infant mortality and
reproductive disorders to killing
animals, allergen-containing,
liver- and intestinal-affecting “food
as pesticide” that can stay in our
systems—GMOs can take a toll on
health, says Jeffrey M. Smith.
20
Jeffrey M. Smith is the international
bestselling author of Seeds of
Deception and Genetic Roulette:
The Documented Health Risks of
Genetically Engineered Foods.
Food: A Registered
Pesticide?
Did you know that when insects bite
GM Bt corn and cotton, they get a mouthful
of a built-in toxin, produced by every cell of
the plant? (Inserted genes produce an insectkilling pesticide called Bt-toxin in every
cell of the plant.) The poison splits open
the insects’ stomachs and kills them. Here’s
the kicker: The GM plants are registered as
pesticides with the Environmental Protection
Agency.
Biotech companies
claim that Bt-toxin has
a history of safe use,
since organic farmers
and others use Bt
bacteria spray for natural
insect control. Genetic
engineers, however, insert genes from the
bacteria into the DNA of the corn and
cotton, so the plants themselves do
the killing.
The truth is that the Bt-toxin produced
in GM plants is thousands of times more
concentrated than natural Bt spray; is
designed to be more toxic; has properties
of an allergen; and, unlike the spray, cannot
be washed off the plant. Even the less toxic
natural bacterial spray is harmful, though—
as evidenced by 500 people who reported
allergy or flu-like symptoms when exposed to
it, and the Indian farm workers who handle
Bt cotton and report similar symptoms.
The Bt cotton (and corn) has other
implications: killing animals.
reacting to the Bt variety. In one village,
they allowed their 13 buffalo to graze on
Bt cotton plants for a single day in January
2008. All died within three days. Bt corn was
also implicated in the deaths of cows, horses,
buffaloes, and chickens. Even Monsanto’s
(a GMO biotech company’s) own 90-day rat
feeding study showed evidence of poisoning
in major organs due to their Bt corn.
GMOs Contain Allergens
Then there’s the problem of allergens.
Immune system problems
in GMO-fed animals are “a
consistent feature of all the
studies,” according to GM
food safety expert Dr. Arpad
Pusztai. The American Academy
of Environmental Medicine
specifically notes an increase
in cytokines, “associated with asthma,
allergy, and inflammation.” While all three
conditions are on the rise in the US, it is the
upsurge in food allergies among children that
has generated the most alarm nationwide.
There are many reasons why GMOs might
be the cause:
•
The GM proteins produced
in GM soy, corn, and
papayas have properties of
known allergens and fail the
allergy screening protocol
recommended by the World
Health Organization.
•
Creating a GMO can introduce
new allergens or elevate
existing ones. Both GM
soy and corn contain new
unintended allergenic proteins,
and GM soy has as much as
seven times higher levels of a
natural soy allergen.
•
Herbicide tolerant GM crops
have considerably more
residues of toxic herbicides,
which may provoke reactions.
•
Allergy tests confirm that some
people react to GM soy, but
not to non-GM soy.
If GM crops kill animals, how
safe are they for us to eat?
When sheep grazed on Bt cotton plants
after harvest, thousands died. Post mortems
showed severe irritation and black patches in
their intestines and livers. Investigators said
preliminary evidence “strongly suggests that
the sheep mortality was due to a toxin. . . .
most probably Bt-toxin.” In a small feeding
study, 100% of sheep fed Bt cotton plants
died within 30 days, while those grazing on
natural cotton plants in the adjoining field
had no symptoms.
Similarly, buffalo that grazed on natural
cotton plants for years without incident are
Soon after GM soy was introduced to the
UK, soy allergies skyrocketed by 50%.
Research shows that consuming GM
foods—including Bt toxin-tainted foods and
GM peas—may provoke sensitivity to other,
non-GMO foods.
GMOs and Liver Problems
The liver is a primary detoxifier, but the
livers of mice and rats fed GM feed were
smaller, partially atrophied or significantly
heavier—possibly inflamed—and some
showed signs of toxicity from eating
GM food.
GMOs Remain Inside Us!
The only published human feeding study
revealed that the genes inserted into GM
crops transfer into the DNA of bacteria
living inside our intestines and continue
to function. So, long after we stop eating
GMOs, we may still have potentially harmful
GM proteins produced continuously inside of
us. Although scientists tested this only on soy,
if Bt genes from corn chips also transferred,
they could transform our intestinal bacteria
into living pesticide factories—possibly for
the rest of our lives. The bottom line? GM
foods might be colonizing the gut flora of
North Americans.
Even if GMOs helped combat global
hunger—which they don’t—it would be hard
to justify putting these high-risk organisms
into the food supply, especially since GM
crops cross-pollinate and contaminate the
environment. Their self-propagating genetic
pollution may outlast the effects of global
warming and nuclear waste.
21
Shhhh! Meet the Scientists Who
Dared to Break the Silence on GMOs
Arpad Pusztai
Biologist Arpad Pusztai was the world’s top expert in his field, but when he accidentally
discovered that genetically modified (GM) foods are dangerous, he became the biotech industry’s
bad boy. Here’s what happened: Dr. Pusztai was awarded a $3 million grant to design a system for
safety testing GMOs, but the testing went sideways.
Within 10 days, the test animals fed GM potatoes developed potentially pre-cancerous cell
growth, smaller brains, livers, and testicles, partially atrophied livers, and damaged immune
systems. Moreover, the cause was almost certainly side effects from the process of genetic
engineering itself. In other words, the GM foods on the market—created from the same process—
might have similar effects on humans.
When Pusztai was interviewed on TV about his findings and his concern over the safety of GM
foods, he was soon fired, threatened with lawsuits, and shut down. Fortunately, Pusztai’s research
was eventually published in the Lancet. Unfortunately, his is the only in-depth study done on the
GM foods eaten every day by Americans and Canadians.
The biotech industry mercilessly
attacked Dr. Traavik. Their excuse?
He presented unpublished work. But
presenting preliminary data at professional
conferences is a long tradition in science,
something that
the biotech industry itself relied on in 1999
to try to counter the evidence
that butterflies were endangered by
GM corn.
Why is Science and Debate
Being Silenced?
There appears to be a de facto ban on
scientists asking certain questions and
finding certain results.

Almost 100
years ago, Nobel

Metchnikoff detailed
his thoughts
on why lactic
acid-producing
bacteria found in cultured
dairy was vital for living a long, healthy life.
After studying Bulgarian peasants that lived in
the Caucasus Mountains, he came to believe that
their longevity—they lived twice as long as their
European counterparts—was due in large part to
the raw, fermented dairy drink they consumed on
a daily basis.
Metchnikoff theorized that the good bacteria
in the “sour milk” consumed by these Bulgarians
were responsible for balancing the bad bacteria

why Metchnikoff is known as the “Father of
Probiotics.”
When you consider the “original source” of
probiotics, the “sour milk” of the mountaindwelling Bulgarians, and then look at probiotics
today, you are likely looking at two very different
entities. For starters, while Metchnikoff isolated

Most Americans have had it drilled in their heads that bacteria are bad. Rampant use of antibiotics and antibacterial soaps
has conditioned us to believe that bacteria are the enemy. Where it concerns the human digestive system, this isn’t necessarily
true. Yes, some bacteria are bad. However, in a healthy digestive tract, good bacteria—known as probiotics—far outnumber
the bad. Scientists have identified over 400 good bacteria in the gut, a number that is sure to grow. A healthy gut is teeming
with probiotics which crowd out bad bacteria, aid digestion, and perhaps most importantly, aid the body in absorbing nutrients
through the small intestine and into the bloodstream.
The best way to get probiotics is by eating a diet of cultured or fermented foods and drinks. Here's a short list. . .of some of
the healthiest probiotic foods: kefir, yogurt, fermented vegetables like sauerkraut, pickled beets, carrots and cucumbers and
fermented soy products like natto and miso. Supplementing with a powerful probiotic is also a great way to aid healthy digestion.

One of the reasons so
many probiotic
supplements have such
large CFU counts (colonyforming units—a potency
measure) is due to the fact that
there is an expected die-off of some
of the probiotics between the time they
are manufactured and the time they are
consumed. When you see the words
“50 billion CFU per serving,” that statement
is often followed by the phrase “at time of

Doe-eyed stunner Sarma Melngailis is a walking billboard
for the raw lifestyle and why everyone should try eating
sensuous, sexy, energizing raw food. In her best-selling books Living
Raw Food, (Harper Collins, 2009) and Raw Food/Real World (Harper
Collins, 2005), she beckons anyone curious about going raw to “get
the glow,” a reference to the luminous skin and youthful appearance
often seen in many raw food devotees.
Over the years, this savvy chef, author, and owner of New York City’s premier raw
restaurant, Pure Food and Wine, has come to realize the enormous health benefits
associated with eating raw are not always enough to convince new people to try it.
“I’m all for telling people to go raw for vanity purposes!” admits Melngailis. “Letting
people know how much eating raw foods can help their appearance is a great
motivator. I really believe that if you’re giving your body nutrient-dense, raw foods
instead of taxing it and making it work hard, you’re promoting the kind of youthfulness
and vitality that you simply can’t get if you’re eating an unhealthy diet.”
Melngailis was all too familiar with unhealthy diets before she made the switch
to raw food. She started her career on Wall Street in the high pressure world of

a time because I had so many symptoms and illnesses. I pretended
everything was fine, but I was emotionally shut down and not willing to
communicate with people because of my weight.”
Monarch decided to get off the dieting merry-go-round once and for
all and fully embraced a raw lifestyle. She stopped eating processed
food from packets and cans and eschewed eating animal products in
favor of foods derived from plant sources. She quickly discovered that
eating raw foods was an ideal way to get the most nutrients, vitamins,
minerals and enzymes from food for increased energy, mood, mental
clarity and more. More importantly, pounds melted away and she lost
an astonishing 105 pounds in one year, even though she wasn’t eating
completely raw at that point.
“I grew more and more excited as I released the weight,” she recalls.
“Every time I’d look in the mirror, I’d notice something different, such as
that I could see my collarbone for the first time in about 15 years!”
As Monarch gradually switched to eating only raw foods, she lost a
total of 160 pounds, which was more than half of her body
weight. Her Incredible Shrinking Raw Woman story was
featured in several national women’s magazines and on CNN,
resulting in a flood of interest from people all over the world
who wanted to know her secret. Eager to share her experience
and inspire others, she decided to reach out to those in the
raw world who might be willing to help her with her cause.
She contacted raw guru and well known author Matt Monarch,

Kristen Suzanne
Accomplished raw chef, blogger and cookbook
author, Kristen Suzanne, was a competitive
bodybuilder eating five chicken breasts a day and
chugging whey protein before she decided to go
vegan, for ethical reasons, about eight years ago.
Going vegan put an end to frequent headaches
and made her feel much better, but it didn’t
compare to the mother lode of health benefits she
reaped when she transitioned to raw foods.
“My energy level soared through the roof!”
she recalls. “I felt great and I still do. I feel lighter
and more mentally aware of everything going on
around me and my body feels like it’s effortlessly
running on all cylinders in the most efficient way.”
An impromptu visit to a bookstore for vegan
recipes resulted in her stumbling upon several
raw cookbooks and thinking that all of the people
in them looked amazing, youthful and beautiful.
She picked up famed chef Juliano’s book, Raw,
and began researching the raw foods diet online,
discovering that it wasn’t a fad but a lifestyle that
had been around almost 40 years. Gradually,
she started adding more raw foods to her diet
until she was 100 percent raw after a year of
experimentation. At that point, she knew she was
so entrenched in the raw foods lifestyle that it was
time for a career change.
“I come from a family of chefs and my Dad
owns a restaurant, so I was wondering how I
could combine my passion for food, health and
raw foods,” she said. “I went to the Living Light
Culinary Institute in Fort Bragg, California, where
I was surrounded by raw foodies and instructors
who influenced me. I was particularly fascinated
with all the different textures found in raw foods,
such as how noodles can be zucchini and
how flavorful and delicious everything from
raw cheese to desserts can be.”
Returning home to Scottsdale,
Arizona, Suzanne quit her job and dove
wholeheartedly into her new calling,
beginning with conducting raw food
workshops for customers at her local
Whole Foods store. She found that she
was happiest at home in her kitchen,
developing recipes and putting them into
an e-book format to share with others.
Her obsession with creating new recipes
resulted in 12 raw recipe books, including
EASY Raw Vegan Transition Recipes, that
many vegans have raved about. The books
can be purchased on Amazon or on her
web site, www.KristensRaw.com
“My web site was launched in 2007 to
provide information, products, services,
advice and recommendations that make
it easier for anyone to adopt a raw, vegan
lifestyle,” she explained. On the site, we
recognize the value of incrementalism, and
we’re aware that all people are different,
have different priorities and that we’re all at
different places along our journey through
life. So while we appreciate (and often
personally strive for) being 100 percent
raw, we know that sometimes that doesn’t
happen, despite the clear health benefits.”
Suzanne and many other raw enthusiasts
embrace the notion of what is often called
the “High Raw” diet, which typically
refers to an all-vegan diet (no meat, dairy,
or eggs) that is 75-80 percent raw or more.
However, she fully respects the fact that some
raw foodists are careful in their attempt to be
100 percent raw, so wherever possible, she
strives to make clear whether recipes or other
resources are 100 percent raw or merely
high raw.
“I just like to make raw fun and sassy,” said
Suzanne, who always loves to share with people
about how they can get the glowing looks
associated with raw foodies. “I think there’s
somewhat of a stereotype that people who eat a
raw foods diet are plain looking, but I like
putting on make up and love to get gussied up!”
Suzanne gets dolled up for frequent guest
spots on television shows such as Good
Morning Arizona, where she is a media
spokesperson and raw food advocate. In
addition to her web site and raw food blog at
www.KristensRaw.com, she also authors
www.greenmommyblog.com, which
encourages and instructs mothers on how to
live an eco-friendly lifestyle.
“. . .Dr. Batmanghelidj’s clarion call to drink more water was eventually heard by health-minded
readers of his books, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water and You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!
I was one of those readers, and I can remember gulping down Your Body’s Many
Cries for Water in the late 1990s, thirsty for information about the importance
of keeping myself thoroughly hydrated. I nodded my head to Dr. Batmanghelidj’s
assertion that people around the world, especially in Western cultures, did
not drink nearly the amount of water they need to keep themselves properly
hydrated. Replenishing the body with water throughout the day is vital because fluids in urine eliminate waste
products, keep the digestive system from becoming clogged, dissipate excess heat, and cool the body.”

Penni Shelton

in the World

When Penni Shelton heard that Jordan Rubin
was speaking at Oral Roberts University in her
hometown of Tulsa in 2004, she rushed to hear
the lecture in hopes that she could glean some
advice about how to deal with her own digestive
health concerns. She met Rubin and credits him
for pulling her into the realm of natural health
and healing, a path that eventually led her to
total wellness and raw foods.
Shortly after getting some encouragement
from Rubin, Shelton started reading several of
Carol Alt’s books and impulsively decided to go
100 percent raw overnight. She realized she had
no idea what she was doing, but after three days
she saw a huge difference.
Still, overall health eluded her. She owned a
hair salon and day spa and began to think that
the chemicals in her environment were having
a negative impact. On a whim, she went to an
iridologist where a Native American woman
looked into the irises of her eyes and proclaimed
that she was toxic from working with so many
chemicals. At that point, she decided her health
would be her first priority, and she walked away
from the salon and sold the business.
“I had lots of irate clients calling me, but
I knew I needed to take some down time for
myself and get away from the environmental
stress,” she said. “That’s when my raw life
started to evolve and I went on a three-month
juice feast. I had always been a heavyset
person, so I was thrilled to lose 40 pounds
since deciding to go raw.”
Penni’s raw transformation was featured in
Carol Alt’s latest book, The Raw 50, coinciding
with her desire to pursue a new career
in the raw world. She started blogging
about her raw lifestyle about four years
ago and wrote the book Raw Food
Cleanse (Ulysses Press, Berkeley) to
educate people about how raw can be
a total lifestyle instead of just a diet.
She also created the web site Raw Food
Rehab and attracted more than 7,000
members to her raw food community,
which includes a virtual holistic retreat
center with a virtual spa, chat rooms
and much more. Today, the award-winning blogger
considers herself more of a “social architect,” because
of her ability to make connections with people and
motivate them about the raw lifestyle.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to meet many lovely
people in the raw world, including chef Ani Phyo,
who had a big impact on me,” Shelton said. “She’s a
lovely person with a great attitude, and the way she
approaches the raw lifestyle is very refreshing. I’m very
passionate about it also, but I never want to be militant
about it for fear or turning people off.”
Shelton admits she has reaped more beauty benefits
from going raw than anything she sold in a bottle at her
beauty salon. At 45, she’s often mistaken for someone
10 years younger, which she attributes to raw foods,
good hydration, juicing and supplementation.
“I think everyone should take Garden of Life® RAW
Ones,” said Shelton. “I recommend the raw vitamins to
lots of people.”

By Dr. Joseph Brasco
ere we go again. As I’m writing this,
the media is covering the nutrition
professor who followed the “Twinkie Diet”—in
which he ate mostly junk foods dotted with
a protein drink and some veggies—and lost
27 pounds. What? He may have lost weight,
but what about his overall health? At least
he had enough sense to not recommend this
diet or follow it long term; it was just
an experiment.
Perspectives on what makes up a good diet
change through the years, and I think that’s
both good and bad. It’s good in a sense that there’s less fear
about including quality fats in the diet. For example, I’m often
asked about coconut oil—and it’s definitely a good dietary
fat, so be sure you include it. On the other hand, there’s still
a lot of confusion about what a good diet is because there are
literally thousands of “diets” out there, including that crazy
Twinkie diet. No wonder that, in my practice, I see so many
people who have become confused and frustrated!
While no one diet works for everyone—people have differing nutritional needs—I do know
that there are dietary principles that everyone should follow. Chief among those is consuming
healthy proteins, fats and carbohydrates—because those are the macronutrients we all need. That
basic advice is pretty well known, but I like to take it a step further. Since I am a board-certified
gastroenterologist, I often focus on diets that are best for digestion. If you want to focus on great
digestion, I recommend the following:
Avoid processed foods altogether. They make your body work harder and they are
often devoid of key nutrients.
Eat healthy proteins from sources like organically raised, grassfed cattle or sheep and
wild-caught fish like salmon or tuna.
Consume healthy fats, including coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil.
Limit your carbs to those found in sprouted whole grains, low-starch veggies and low-sugar fruits.
very bodily cell, tissue and organ depends on nutrient
absorption and assimilation of food through healthy
digestion. Therefore, you need to be intentional and choose your
food wisely. For me—and the patients I see on a daily basis—
that means finding foods that are rich in probiotics, enzymes
and fiber.
Probiotics promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in
the intestines, which support healthy digestion, absorption of
minerals, synthesis of vitamins, production of B vitamins and
certain enzymes, immune health—and much more.† When there
are not enough of these good bacteria called probiotics, the result
is often felt negatively in the gut’s digestive process and in overall health.
Eating enzyme-packed raw food or sprouted food is another
way to support great digestion. Enzymes are found naturally
in raw, uncooked foods and most raw foods contain the very
enzymes your body needs to digest that food. You require an
array of enzymes, too, because different enzymes are necessary
for full digestion. That makes enzymes an essential part of the
digestive process, which, by the way, takes up more of your body’s
energy than you might think—about 80 percent.
So eat plenty of raw fermented foods, fresh, raw organic
vegetables and fruits (like papayas and pineapple), raw sprouted
grains, raw seeds and nuts, avocados, sprouts and unpasteurized
dairy products.
Cultured dairy foods are packed with probiotics and enzymes.
A diet good for digestive health should include plenty of cultured dairy
products like yogurt, kefir, hard cheeses, cultured cream and cottage
cheese—from goats, cows and sheep. Likewise, cultured and fermented
vegetables like sauerkraut, pickled carrots, beets or cucumbers also
supply probiotics and enzymes, including enzymes that break down
food and increase digestibility.†
Finally, don’t forget fiber. Include foods like fresh raw vegetables and
fruits, sprouted whole grains, nuts and seeds. Fiber creates a hospitable
environment for friendly bacteria (but you also need enough of these
good bacteria for maximum fiber benefits) and serves to normalize
transit time—the time it takes food to pass through the digestive tract.†
Fiber also helps move foods’ nutrients through the digestive system so
that your body can be properly nourished. That’s a pretty important
role, too, because different areas of the digestive tract absorb different,
essential nutrients.
Great foods with probiotics, enzymes and fiber support great
digestion. Among other things, a healthy gut acts as a barrier to a
sometimes threatening external environment and is the gatekeeper for
life-sustaining nutrients. Additionally, the digestive system is home to
up to 75 percent of your immune system cells, making it the first line
of defense for your overall health. Simply put, your digestive system
is your body’s source of growth, repair and energy, so feed it what it
needs—not the Twinkie diet.
n my practice, I see a lot of folks with digestive issues, but I’ve noticed many of my patients have a growing interest in and recognition of
the benefits of probiotics. In fact, probiotics are becoming pretty popular in mainstream America and that’s good thing, since we typically
don’t get enough probiotics—and this lack of good bacteria has cost us in terms of our health.
Food processing, pollution, antibiotic overuse and more can reduce the bacteria in our guts, and once good bacteria are diminished, bad bacteria
move right in. The good news is that consuming probiotics increases the size of good intestinal bacteria colonies called microflora, thus improving
health and digestion. In short, probiotics aid digestion and the absorption of nutrients—basically determining how well-nourished we are.
Probiotics assist digestion in several ways, including the promotion of sound absorption and assimilation of nutrients.† Likewise, probiotics
play a key role in peristalsis—the process by which food and waste moves through the digestive system—and helps to alleviate the symptoms of
occasional constipation.† Additionally, probiotics stimulate the production of mucins, the proteins in mucus that lubricate and protect our “interior”
skin, and, thereby, support healthy mucosal immune and non-immune mechanisms to help balance intestinal micorflora.†
Probiotics also increase the proportion of healthy bacteria in the intestinal ecosystem.† And they help to
balance the microorganisms in the gut.† Additionally, probiotics support the immune system.†
Speaking of the benefits of probiotics. . .many fermented foods, including whole fat, organic cultured dairy like
yogurt and kefir, contain an abundance of lactic acid bacteria and other probiotics, so be sure to fill your gut with
these good bacteria.

“Dr. Price was a scientifically curious individual who wondered why he was so busy filling
more and more cavities of patients sitting in his dental chair each and every year. The
more he considered the reasons why, the more he believed it was due to poor nutrition.
Just as Henry Ford’s invention of the assembly line revolutionized the way cars were made,
innovative food manufacturing companies in the early 20th century were discovering ways
to streamline the production of canned and frozen foods as well as boxed cereals, assorted
candies and sweet pastries. Instead of housewives preparing food from scratch—peeling
potatoes shucking peas, plucking chickens or grinding flour—they could purchase the same
foods at their nearby general store or corner market already prepared for them.
’Modern’ foods like boxed cakes, ice cream bars, sugar-coated cereals and glazed doughnuts, Dr. Price
sensed, were the main reason why frightened children had to be dragged kicking and screaming into his
dental chair. . .
Dr. Price suspected that the ’diet of commerce,’ as he termed the newfangled processed foods flooding
the marketplace, was the reason why his young patients—as well as their parents—were suffering from
more and more tooth decay as well as chronic and degenerative diseases. But how could he prove it?”

Energizing Enzymes
M
ost of you have heard of enzymes, but if you need a refresher, here’s
an “Enzymes 101” of sorts. There are three main types of enzymes:
metabolic enzymes, digestive enzymes and food enzymes. Metabolic enzymes are
instrumental in heart, brain, lung and kidney function, and literally hundreds of
metabolic enzymes keep the body humming along. They’re in our cells, internal organs, blood and even our bones.
Digestive enzymes are secreted by the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas and the small intestine. They break down large
food molecules into smaller units that can be absorbed by the blood and into cells. This is essential because that’s how our
bodies get nourished from the macronutrients: proteins, fats and carbs. In fact, the enzyme protease works to digest proteins†; lipase works
to digest fats†, while amylase works to digest carbs.† Digestive enzymes speed up the digestive process and without digestive enzymes, food
molecules would break down far too slowly to be absorbed.†
Food enzymes are found naturally in raw, uncooked foods and help digest those foods so their nutrients can be absorbed into the
bloodstream. Food enzymes, like digestive enzymes, help to digest food so that it can be absorbed properly by the body. Food enzymes can be
destroyed, however, when heated above temps of 118 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ah, there’s the rub!
We usually lack enzymes from food because we cook them to death. Without those enzymes, our digestive systems work harder to digest
food. In fact, cooked foods can take up to 2 or 3 times longer to pass through the digestive system than raw foods do. Eating enzyme-dead food
also taxes your pancreas and other organs from the wear-and-tear they undergo digesting mostly cooked foods. Additionally, the more stress put
on these organs, the less time they have to rebuild cells and tissues or keep the immune system strong.
Overcooked foods aren’t the only reason we come up short on enzymes, though. Eating processed or fast foods, being run down or under
stress, living in an overly hot or cold climate, the aging process, pregnancy, being a frequent flyer, or even sweating can diminish enzyme stores.
In turn, your health can take a hit because overall health is tied to digestive health and good digestion relies on the right enzymes in the right
amounts—at the right place and time.
Luckily, eating raw, cultured or sprouted foods can help keep your enzyme levels energized.

Fabulous Fiber
ou you might know it as roughage or bulk, but fiber is important for healthy digestion.† Fiber refers to the structural parts of
plants which are not readily broken down by our digestive systems—so that things keep moving in there.
Don’t underestimate the importance of moving food along, either, because different parts of the digestive system absorb
different essential nutrients, so you want to keep your food moving. This also helps avoid nutrient malabsorption, bacterial flora imbalance,
putrefaction of undigested foods or even unwanted intestinal inhabitants.
The problem is that most of us don’t get enough fiber in our diets. A diet that supplies 35g to 40g of fiber per day is suggested for most
people, but the majority of folks get only 18g to 20g per day. That’s about half of what we need, so make sure to include plenty of fiber with
delicious recipes like the ones below.

BEYOND ORGANIC FIBER
A New Way to Picture Fiber
The late Dr. Denis Burkitt had a unique way to convince audiences of the need for fiber.
It certainly wasn’t the most appetizing
way to prove a point, but Dr. Denis
Burkitt was a man on a mission. The Irish
born, British-trained doctor spent 15
years of his life in Eastern Africa. While
there, he noted that the native Ugandans
experienced far fewer digestive and
other health issues than did his British
counterparts who lived among them.
He surmised that the difference was
largely due to dietary habits.
The British ate a meat-and-potatoes
diet with very few fruits and vegetables,
and they built a social life around
afternoon tea, which was really an excuse
to snack on cakes and scones with a
spot of sugared tea and milk. The native
population, however, consumed plenty
of fruits and vegetables and little meat.
Processed flour, white sugar, and beef
were either too expensive or generally
unavailable to them.
In order to drive this point home,
Dr. Burkitt engaged in a rather peculiar
hobby. On his daily walks through
the Ugandan countryside, he would
photograph human feces.
Disgusting? Sure, but he did it to prove
a point, a point that he would drive home
when he lectured to other doctors.
The Irish surgeon made detailed
observations of his patients’ bowel habits
and noted how the Africans produced
much more feces than the Brits. Western
diets were so dense in calories and low
in bulk that their intestines didn’t pass
enough volume to remain healthy, while
the feces of Ugandans was soft and
produced with negligible discomfort.
To prove this point, he would flash his
pictures on a screen while he lectured.
Dr. Burkitt’s insight and advocacy
moved “the fiber hypothesis” from
obscurity to the forefront of science with
the publication of an important study
called “Dietary Fiber and Disease” in
the Journal of the American Medical
Association (JAMA) in 1974. In the
decade following publication of this
groundbreaking research, a consensus
developed in the United States and Great
Britain that fiber was missing in modern
diets and needed to be reintroduced.
A Question of Fiber
Not all fiber is equal. While there is
probably no such thing as “bad” fiber you
do want to make sure that you are getting
enough of the right kind of fiber.
For starters, there are two basic
kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble.
Soluble fiber, which is found in nuts
and seeds, apples, pears, strawberries
and blueberries, partially dissolves in
water. Soluble fiber can help lower blood
cholesterol and may reduce the risk of
heart disease and stroke.†
Insoluble fiber, which cannot be broken
down by water, is found in food like
grains, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini and
tomatoes. Insoluble fiber provides the
“bulk” needed for proper functioning of
the stomach and intestines.†
You may ask yourself, “Which one
is better for me?” While both types of
fiber are important in maintaining good
health, it’s not difficult to overdo it. Too
much soluble fiber (nuts and seeds,
beans, apples, pears, strawberries, and
blueberries) can worsen constipation or
create a gas problem for some people.
54
54
†
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Too much insoluble fiber (whole grains,
brown rice, cereals, carrots, zucchini, and
tomatoes) can have the opposite effect.
Where fiber is concerned, that isn’t the
only question you should be asking.
You should also ask, “What is the best
source of fiber?”
In my opinion, the answer to that
question is one word: RAW.
The RAW Fiber Revolution
It’s pretty easy to see from the list
of soluble and insoluble fiber, that all
of them are grown in soil. Grains, nuts,
seeds, fruits and vegetables are our
sources of fiber. Once that is established,
we simply need to find the best sources
of those.
For my money, RAW is the way to go.
RAW foods are unheated, untreated and
unadulterated. They contain no binders
or fillers. Simply put, they are exactly
what nature intended them to be. If you
were walking through an organic apple
orchard, the best thing you could do for
yourself would be to pick an apple off the
tree, wash it off with a little water, and
bite into it. Why in the world would you
choose packaged, chemically treated
apple slices from a fast food restaurant
over a pristine alternative?
If that isn’t enough to convince you,
consider this. That apple you ate off
the tree—it contains a lot more than
fiber. It contains vitamins, minerals and
phytonutrients that can all be altered,
damaged or lost when heated, treated,
or adulterated. RAW is a quality standard
that shouldn’t be sacrificed.
When I set out to formulate RAW

mind. Of course the first standard was
that it had to be RAW. I also wanted it to

Enzymes and DIET
Mother Nature can be pretty elegant, and a perfect example can be found
where enzymes are concerned. Raw food, consumed as close to nature as
possible, contains digestive enzymes. Think about that for a second. If you eat
food raw, as nature intended, the very food you are eating contains enzymes
that make your diet easier to digest! That equates to a noticeable advantage
for your body. The more enzymes you can feed it, the less it has to devote
to digesting your food. Alternately, cooked and processed foods are pretty
much devoid of enzymes. Consuming them means that you are relying almost
completely on your very own digestive enzymes to do all the work.
RAW Enzymes™
RAW Enzymes from Garden of Life® was designed to provide your
body with enzymes the way nature intended—uncooked, untreated and
unadulterated, with no binders or fillers—in other words, RAW. Each formula
is packed with 22 different digestive enzymes. Every formula includes a
significant amount of protein-, carbohydrate- and fat-digesting enzymes.
In fact, each individual enzyme included in every formula has a higher potency
than any other multiple enzyme formula on the market.†
In addition to the highest potency of enzymes available in a multiple enzyme
formula, RAW Enzymes™ goes even further with our Overtime Enzymes.
RAW Enzymes™ includes probiotics specifically added for their ability to create
more enzymes within the body. These “enzyme factories” work long after you
take the product, continually generating additional enzymes round-the-clock
as part of their natural metabolic life cycle. RAW Enzymes™ also includes
probiotic-created vitamins, minerals and antioxidant enzymes including
glutathione, catalase and SOD.
™
At Garden of Life, we strive to provide unique
formulas that bring something new to the table.
With RAW Enzymes™ you get:
•
High Potency—Higher activity levels of every
enzyme than all of the leading brands
•
RAW—The only raw enzyme formula—
uncooked, untreated and unadulterated with
no binders or fillers
•
Overtime Enzymes—the only enzyme formula
that includes probiotics that work overtime
to produce additional enzymes
•
Broad-Spectrum—22 powerful vegetarian
digestive enzymes with unsurpassed
enzymatic activity to help your body digest
the complete range of proteins, fats,
carbohydrates and fiber.
Breaking Down Enzymes
The total number of enzymes in our bodies can
only be speculated, and the number of individual
enzyme molecules is virtually inestimable.
That said, the following food enzymes are
critical for our overall health:
•
Protease is a member of a large group
of enzymes that have a variety of functions
in the body, the primary one aiding in the
digestion and assimilation of protein.†
In other words, without protease, the body
would not be able to digest the protein
in food.
•
Bromelain is a protease enzyme that comes
from either the stem or the fruit of pineapple.
Bromelain aids digestion and supports
healthy and natural inflammation response
in the body.†
•
Papain is a protease enzyme found
naturally in unripe papayas and has been
used to support digestion for centuries
in South America.†
•
Peptidase is a naturally occurring enzyme
that helps metabolize proteins in the body
and plays an important role in the digestive,
immune and circulatory systems.†
•
Dipeptidyl peptidase IV is a digestive
enzyme that detoxifies gluten and beta
casein in the digestive tract.†
•
Amylase breaks down starch and
converts it into sugar. You’ll find amylase
in saliva, where it begins the chemical
process of digestion by breaking down
food before it’s swallowed and sent into
the digestive tract.†
•
Invertases and sucrases break down
sucrose, or what we call table sugar.

When comparing enzyme formulas—especially ones with multiple enzymes—it can be pretty confusing. Enzymes are best
measured by their activity levels, but there is no “one” measure of activity level that is used for all enzymes. Instead, different
measurements are used for different enzymes.
While that may be confusing, with RAW Enzymes™, we’ve made it pretty easy. We looked at the leading multiple enzyme formulas,
and we made sure that RAW Enzymes™ contains a higher activity level of every enzyme. Simply put, it is the highest potency enzyme
formula available in health food stores.

Water Springs
ETERNAL
60
In his poem Rime of the Ancient Mariner,
author Samuel Taylor Coleridge describes the
vast stretches of sea by saying “Water, water,
everywhere, nor any drop to drink,” a longing
ode to the literal ocean of salt water that was
worthless as a means of quenching the brutal
thirst that accompanied the long sea voyages
of our ancestors.
The value of water to ancient civilizations
would be hard to overstate. In my opinion,
access to clean water was the number one
factor in whether a civilization prospered
or perished. Water nourished the land,
nourished the animals that civilizations
fed upon and nourished the civilizations
themselves.
Today, we take water for granted. An easy
turn of the tap yields gallons of water at our
disposal. It would be easier to name retail
outlets that don’t carry water than those that
do. Every single convenience store, grocery
store and gas station seems to sell water.
Everywhere we look, water flows into our lives.
I put a very high value on water when it
comes to my personal health. In fact, when
I first set out to acquire land for my mixedagriculture sustainable farms and ranches,
I was less concerned with the land, the local
climate or even the location. I was most
concerned about the water. In essence, I
wasn’t looking for “land.” I was looking for a
sustainable future. I was looking for water.
My love affair with water began at an early
age. Every summer, my parents would take
me to visit my paternal grandparents in Long
Island, New York. Grandpa Jerry and Grandma
Ann had a summer home in Mountaindale, a
hamlet around ninety miles from New York
City, near the Catskill Mountains.
I loved Grandpa Jerry. He was a dentist who
by Jordan Rubin
saw patients in the basement of his home and
had a keen interest in natural health from
an early age. He enjoyed studying the works
of Herbert Shelton, one of the founders of
the science hygiene movement, otherwise
known as natural hygiene, as well as the work
of Dr. Royal Lee, natural health pioneer and
inventor.
Whenever we visited Papa Jerry in
Mountaindale, he’d call me into the kitchen
and hand me an empty gallon-sized plastic
container. “We’re going to get some spring
water,” he’d say. With empty containers in
hand, we’d set off on a short drive, followed
by a fifteen-minute walk that would take
us up the side of a small mountain, where a
fresh spring gushed forth the purest, most
refreshing, best-tasting water you’d ever find.
We’d fill up our gallon containers and tote
them back home to drink.
In the early 90s my water education
deepened when I read a book by
Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, entitled
Your Body’s Many Cries for Water.
Dr. Batmanghelidj was a political prisoner
in Iran during the days of the Ayatollah
Khomeini. While in prison, he treated stressshocked prisoners with no medications—they
weren’t available—and instead relied on
making sure they were properly hydrated.
He treated hundreds, if not thousands,
of prisoners suffering from stomach
pains caused by the stress of being falsely
imprisoned. He found that for many
of them, proper hydration was a key
component in returning them to health.
He eventually published his findings and
went on to write seven books championing
the benefits of water.
It’s safe to say that I am a huge
proponent of water. I grew up with
people who valued it, and I’ve immersed
myself in the teachings of the people who
studied it. That’s also why I decided that
the Ozark Mountain region of southern
Missouri and the mountains of north
Georgia would be the first places I looked
for land to start my own ranch and farm.
months, trips to the property always include
time spent playing in the water—canoeing,
tubing, swimming and just plain relaxing as
the cool water washes over us.
Of course, being a huge proponent of
water, I know that not all water is created
equally. In fact, it may surprise you to know
that I don’t recommend much of the bottled
water sold today.
undergo treatment to “purify” it. Purification
can mean using reverse osmosis, distillation
or deionization among other things.
Which is better—purified or spring?
I prefer spring water that I know is pure,
because to me, it is “living” water, as found
in nature. Of course, not everyone has access
to pure spring water because water flowing
from a certified spring is somewhat rare.
The Future of MY Farm
Missouri is a vast wonderland of
water. It is believed that Missouri has
more underground springs than any
other state. The land I chose to build my
mixed-agriculture ranch and farm on is no
exception. On two different properties, I
have springs that produce between 2 and 6
million gallons of water a day!
That water is more crucial to the future
success of our efforts than any other single
factor. That water will propagate fertile land.
It will ensure that my animals can thrive off
the land and stay hydrated, and my plants
grow and flourish. Too often I think that we
take water for granted—but it is clearly a
vital resource for the entire ecosystem.
The mountainous region of north Georgia
is known for its abundant rainfall and pure
spring water. And it’s also a source of fun!
The creeks and ponds that are created by
the springs are sources of leisure activities
for me and my family. During the warmer
What’s in the Water?
Earlier I talked about how readily
available water is. Turn on your faucet and
a plentiful supply pours forth. Unless you
have your own well or spring, that water
most likely comes from a water treatment
plant. Now, I am not about to say that water
treatment plants are bad. They rid water of
tons of chemicals and living organisms that
you don’t want in your water. However, to do
that, they add chemicals, such as chlorine.
Personally, I prefer to drink water that hasn’t
been treated with chemicals.
Bottled water presents a different story.
There are two basic types of bottled water—
purified and spring water. Spring water
that is bottled must come from a natural
underground source deep within the earth
that flows to the surface. Purified water
usually comes from a municipal source—
straight from the tap—but it then must
Many turn to purified water. While purified
water is safe for you, I’m not convinced it’s
the best for you.
Several of the springs on my properties are
among the purest in the world. The purest
spring water will contain the the lowest
TDS or "total dissolved solids." TDS is
a general description of how many hard
minerals are present in the water. While
many waters claim purity, the only true
measure of purity is the percent of H2O in
the water. The more “other” elements your
water contains besides H2O, the less pure
and effective the water is. Since water’s main
function in the body is transporting nutrients
into the cells and carrying waste out, the
more pure, the better. There is quite a bit of
debate about whether your want more or less
minerals in you water. I prefer low mineral
water for a few reasons, not the least of which
61
is better taste. In fact,
the spring water on our
north Georgia property
has won international
awards for taste
excellence.
Since I am very
intentional about my
diet, including my
vitamin and mineral
intake from whole
foods and whole
food nutritional
supplements, I don’t
want to consume a large amount of minerals
from water as they are “inorganic” minerals
in essentially the same form as rock.
Another thing I look for in water is
alkalinity levels. One of the most common
questions I’m asked in seminars is, "What do
you think about alkaline water?" My answer
is that while consuming natural spring
water that is moderately high in minerals
and slightly alkaline is certainly healthy, I
believe the more pure the water, the better.
Alkaline water is simply water with more
minerals—or water that has less purity. We
don’t need minerals in water to be healthy. In
fact, I prefer the vitamins and minerals from
foods and beverages for the body as opposed
to minerals from rock that are found in water.
The spring water I drink and recommend
is a true source of “living” water. It reminds
me of adventures with my Grandpa Jerry
hunting for spring water in the mountains of
upstate New York. But it is also more than
that. Every time I take
a drink of pure water
that runs through my
property, I am reminded
that entire civilizations
once flourished simply
because they valued,
protected and even
fought wars over
this most precious of
resources.
As I write this article,
my oldest son Joshua
and I are visiting our
north Georgia property nestled in the Blue
Ridge Mountains. Just yesterday as Joshua bent
down with cupped hands and sipped water from
one of our springs and remarked, “Dad, this
is the most delicious water I’ve ever tasted,” it
reminded me of the legacy of natural health and
sustainability handed down to me by my grandpa
and my dad. I now have the privilege, or rather
the responsibility, to pass this on to my future
generations. . .and so do you. "Stay thirsty,
my friends."

I have one of the world’s best jobs. Every year, I am privileged to travel the
country and share my message of health and wellness with thousands of
people. I get to hear testimonies of health transformation from so many, and
their ability to overcome health challenges are easily the best part of my job.
But there is another aspect of my job that I have always felt drawn to.
I love to formulate cutting-edge, whole food nutritional supplements.
I have been at this for over 12 years, and I hope to be doing it 20 years
from now. I love following the latest clinical studies, researching the science
and building out the formulas. The exacting nature of the process is both
exhausting and exhilarating.
Why do I love it? Because I genuinely feel that if I do my job, I can help
people live better, and I can hear more great stories when I am on the
road. The two main components of what I do at Garden of Life®—sharing
my health and wellness message and formulating whole food nutritional
supplements—will forever be linked.
With all that said, there are a few product categories I never thought I
could formulate to the Garden of Life standard of pure, whole food nutrition.
Our newest Vitamin Code® Liquid Multivitamin is one such formula.

course we would use the
Vitamin Code® vitamins
and minerals in our
liquid multivitamin.
While that decision was
easy, it did lead to a different
problem altogether. You see,
the chemically isolated vitamins
and minerals that other liquid
multivitamins use are virtually
devoid of flavor. In manufacturing
terms, they are taste-neutral.
That is not the case with Vitamin
Code® vitamins and minerals.
Like anything that is grown, they
have their own unique flavor. And
since every Vitamin Code® vitamin
and mineral is grown separately, there were a lot of
unique flavors.
It gets harder. Vitamin Code® Liquid Multi also contains
35 RAW, organic fruits, vegetables and sprouts in each
serving. Each of these has a unique flavor. Making all of these
competing flavors come together was difficult to say the least.
We tried dozens of different whole food flavorings, and
each one was tested by our research team. Some of the
flavorings weren’t . . .optimal. In the end, we were able to
source a combination of orange and mango that worked.
We feel without a doubt that we have the best-tasting Liquid
Multivitamin available and the only one that qualifies as
whole food.
So we were done, right? Not even close, because there
was one other huge hurdle to overcome.
This is remarkably easy to
accomplish if you are willing to
make some concessions using
a dubious set of preservatives.
There are a multitude of
chemical preservatives that will
do the trick—too many to list
here. But for the Vitamin Code®
brand, they wouldn’t do. Even
if all of them were proven to be
completely safe—and I’m not
convinced they are—I would
never allow them to be included
in the formula. It goes against
the very nature of The Vitamin
Code®. And it nearly cost us the
product. Those were the stakes.
If we couldn’t find a whole food preservation system, we wouldn’t
launch the Vitamin Code® Liquid Multi. Preserving the brand—
literally and figuratively—was the most critical problem to solve.
I had a thought: “What if we could use Raw Apple Cider
Vinegar for the preservation system?”
After all, I have touted the use of raw apple cider vinegar for
years. I have written about it in my books and have gone out of
my way to make recipes using it. One of my favorite, healthy salad
dressings uses it as its main ingredient. Simply put, as a standalone ingredient, raw apple cider vinegar is incredibly healthy.
And it also turned out to be perfect for The Vitamin Code®
Liquid Multivitamin. I will admit I was nervous when we tested the
formula. It seemed like such a great idea, and I was convinced
something would go wrong in the testing process. Obviously, it
passed with flying colors. Now, our dream to create the first and
only Whole Food Liquid Multivitamin formula with a chemical-free,
all-natural preservation system is a reality.
While I never thought Garden of Life® would create a liquid
multivitamin, the need was clearly there. I am as proud of this
product as anything we have ever formulated. I can’t wait to go
on the road again to hear all of the success stories from the new
users of the Vitamin Code® Liquid Multivitamin.
Now our dream to create
the first and only Whole Food
Liquid Multivitamin formula
with a chemical-free,
all-natural preservation
system is a reality.
Preserving the Brand
The Vitamin Code® brand means a lot of things, and purity
is at the top of the list. We are not willing to sacrifice that for
anything.
Here is the issue we faced. When creating a liquid
multivitamin you have to be able to preserve it. It needs to
be shelf-stable.

THE SCOOP
ON THE Drupe
The drupe, you say? No; we’re not talking about
droopy or saggy skin. We’re talking about our
culture going cuckoo for coconuts!
You might call it a cultural craze, since the coconut has
been exploding on the scene lately. In fact, the two largest
soda brands on the planet have both recently acquired
coconut water brands. Additionally, you can find coconut
related products in health food stores and in mainstream
retail. It’s everywhere!
So let’s take a closer look at this fascinating
phenomenon called the coconut. Even though the word
nut is in coconut, it’s not a nut or wholly even a fruit for
that matter. It’s technically called a drupe; it’s a fruit with
an outer husk or skin, a usually succulent middle layer,
and a hard and woody inner shell typically enclosing a
single seed.
Other examples of drupes include: stone fruits such
as plums, cherries, dates, mangoes and apricots as well
as raspberries and blackberries, which are made up of
clustered tiny drupelets surrounding a central stem.
While coconuts may fit neatly under the “drupe”
umbrella, there are important differences within the
coconut world to consider. While it’s true that coconuts
are superfoods packed with
vitamins, minerals
and fiber, there’s a
difference, for instance,
between young coconuts
versus mature coconuts, as
well as coconut water versus
coconut milk. For example,
young coconuts have
more water and soft, gel-
70
like coconut meat, while mature coconuts have
less water and firmer coconut meat.
Both young and mature coconuts are good
for you, however, the mature coconut may have
a slightly higher healthy fatty acid content, while
young coconut may have a bit of an advantage
water-wise. Here’s why: young coconut water is
high in B vitamins, minerals (especially calcium,
magnesium and potassium) and contains high
levels of electrolytes.
Speaking of coconut water, let’s just clarify
that coconut water is the liquid inside the
coconut. Coconut milk, however, is made
from the expressed juice of grated mature
coconut meat and water. Going a step further
. . . coconut cream is made in a similar way as
coconut milk, but contains a higher ratio of
coconut to water, thereby making it thicker.
You can even buy or make coconut kefir from
coconut water or coconut milk. You’ll not
only get the health benefits of coconut, but,
since coconut kefir is a lacto-fermented
beverage, you’ll also get probiotics and
enzymes, which support digestion.
While we’re at it, let’s not forget about coconut oil—known as
the world’s healthiest oil—from the coconut meat that contains
ultra-healthy medium chain fatty acids like lauric acid, myristic acid,
caprylic acid, palmitic acid and more.
Don’t use just any coconut oil, either, because coconut oils on
the market vary dramatically quality-wise. Low-quality coconut
oils are processed by chemical extraction, using solvents, or are
hydrogenated, bleached and deodorized. A high-quality virgin organic
coconut oil derived from fresh coconuts with no GMO ingredients,
bleaching, deodorizing, refining or hydrogenation is what you want to
look for and use.
Two other coconut products gaining in popularity with the health
trendsetter crowd are raw coconut cream and raw coconut kefir.
Raw coconut kefir is made from raw coconut water that is
naturally fermented with probiotics, but it’s dairy-free, suitable
for vegans and packed with enzymes. Raw coconut kefir also
promotes a healthy intestinal environment supporting your body’s
immune and digestive systems.
Likewise, raw coconut kefir supports proper hydration since it
is a highly organized, ionized water source.
With such great taste and a variety of health benefits, it’s no
wonder there’s a cultural coconut craze. So, if you’re going cuckoo
for coconuts, now you have the scoop on this amazing drupe!
Here is what you need to know about
these cutting-edge drupe derivatives:
Raw coconut cream is created by
pressing or “juicing” the meat of the
mature coconut. This creates
a food loaded with medium-chain
fatty acids that are easily absorbed by
the body—providing a yummy
source of quick energy. An added
bonus is that raw coconut cream
has the consistency of cream
cheese and has a smooth
texture—making it an ideal
healthy snack or ingredient in a
raw dessert or smoothie. What’s
more, raw coconut cream is perfect
for those on a raw, vegan diet.
“Since
coconut kefir is a
lacto-fermented beverage,
you’ll also get probiotics
and enzymes, which
support digestion.”

The
HOTTEST
Nutrient
It may be the most clinically studied nutrient of the last decade.
If you google it, you’ll find an avalanche of recently published
studies either confirming its benefits or revealing new ones.
Emerging science suggests that it supports breast health, colon
health and prostate health. It supports the immune system.

It helps build healthy bones and teeth.† It supports memory and

concentration.† The impressive list goes on and on.
The item in question is not a pharmaceutical. It is not a pill
that has spent a decade in research and development. It’s not
especially expensive, and you certainly don’t need a prescription
to get it. In fact, it is simply a vitamin—and it may just be the most
important vitamin for human health.
What are we talking about?
Answer: Vitamin D.
How Is It Possible?
76
According to a March 2009 report in
Archives of Internal Medicine, 75% of U.S.
teens and adults are deficient in vitamin
D. That number is astonishing for more
than one reason. Consider that you receive
vitamin D every time you step outside into
the sunshine since your body has the ability
to take sunlight and convert it into vitamin D.
You can receive vitamin D from the foods you
eat and the dairy products you consume. Fish
such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and fatty
tuna are superior sources of vitamin D, as
well as milk and yogurt fortified with vitamin
D. In fact, almost all milk sold for human
consumption in the U.S. is required to be
fortified with vitamin D.
This all adds up to a perplexing reality.
If you can get vitamin D simply by sitting in
the sun, and if it’s readily available in many of
the foods recommended as part of a healthy
diet, how did we get to become a nation of
vitamin D deficiency?
In an ironic twist, much of the current
vitamin D deficiency can be laid at the feet
of skin cancer. To protect ourselves from the
ravages of this disease, we’re told to slather
sunscreen on our faces and wear long-sleeve
shirts, yet the act of using sunscreen with
an 8 SPF or greater reduces our ability to
convert the sun’s ultraviolet rays into vitamin
D production.
Add to that the fact that if you live in
northern climates, it’s almost impossible
to get adequate sunlight during the colder
months, and that popular voices in the media
tell us to avoid the foods highest in vitamin
D because of their high fat content, and you
begin to see where our national vitamin D
deficiency comes from.
As for vitamin D from food, there are a few
theories as to why we’re still deficient despite
a fairly ready supply of foods rich in vitamin D.
Many Americans don’t eat much fish, which is
probably the best dietary source of vitamin
D, because of several factors: price, taste,
availability and safety.
And what about the vitamin D-fortified
beverages? It’s no secret that milk
consumption has fallen over the last
decade, again for a variety of reasons.
The anti-fat crusade put a damper on milk
sales, and soft drinks—a cheaper source of
calories—have ridden a wave of popularity in
the last 30 years, cutting into the consumption of
healthier beverages that have been fortified with
vitamin D.
The net effect is the current state of vitamin D
deficiency in the U.S.
And the Recommendation Is . . .
As vitamin D deficiency has become more prevalent, the attention
and focus paid to vitamin D have increased, and for good reason.
Most people familiar with vitamin D understand that this
nutrient is essential to skeletal system health.† Along with
calcium, vitamin D is considered vital for maintaining
healthy bones.† Vitamin D actually regulates the use
of calcium in the body by dramatically increasing its
absorption and utilization. But strong, healthy bones are
only the starting point.† Much of the interest in vitamin D
stems from the fact that it’s found throughout the body in
over 600 receptor sites.
Interestingly, vitamin D isn’t a vitamin in the classic sense; it is a
prohormone that is eventually converted to an active hormone. As such, it
has receptor sites in just about every major organ in the body, including the
brain and the heart. Due to the fact that vitamin D receptors are so prevalent
in the body, research has increased on vitamin D, and seemingly every day
new studies tout the health benefits of vitamin D consumption.
™
Introducing VITMIN CODE® RAW D3
Recent studies have also shown that vitamin D supports immune health
by helping to regulate the immune system.† The brain is home to dozens of

There is no “one cause” of weight gain
There are many reasons for weight gain—cultural, emotional, physical, biological or even
economical. Maybe you were raised in an environment where fat-laden fried foods were served
every night, or maybe you work in a stress-filled job that leaves eating as your only outlet for
pent-up emotions. Perhaps you’re a member of the “TV generation” that shuns outdoor
exercise, or maybe you’re one of the millions living life on-the-go who turn to quick, cheap
calories provided by fast-food restaurants. For the majority of you with weight to lose, it’s likely

How Diet 360 works to
promote weight loss†
The ingredients that comprise Diet 360 have been
individually reviewed and clinically studied for the role
they play in supporting weight loss.†
Ashwangandha extract works to bolster the body’s
stress response, which helps reduce the stress hormone
cortisol.† As people become stressed, their responses
can be varied. Things like skipping meals, binge eating,
carb craving, stress-related fatigue, mood swings and
occasional sleeplessness are common. By inhibiting
stress responses, Ashwangandha extract supports
healthy weight management.†
The combination of blueberry leaf and bayberry
bark extracts are clinically studied ingredients
included in Diet 360. Where Ashwangandha extract
works to reduce cortisol and stress, the blueberry
leaf and bayberry bark work to reduce the negative
impact of food, particularly with regard to blood
sugar levels.†
If you eat a high amount of carbs and sugar, there
will be a lot of glucose in the bloodstream. The longer
glucose is in the bloodstream, the more likely that the
body will try to get rid of it another way. The longer
insulin touches glucose, the more likely it will convert
that glucose into fatty acids. The fat created in the
process may manifest itself as new fat cells or increase
the size of existing fat cells. Maintaining blood sugar
levels (already in the normal range) with Diet 360 may
ultimately lead to slower fat cell production.†
In clinical studies, blueberry leaf and bayberry bark
were shown to help maintain already normal blood
sugar levels for a healthy glycemic response.† These
ingredients did so by expediting glucose from the
bloodstream into fat and muscle cells.† By advancing
the movement of glucose quickly into the cells, glucose
can’t be converted efficiently into fat by the insulin.

Those Pesky Fat Cells
While fat has many important functions in the body,
it’s best to think of fat as an energy source. If you go
on a diet and reduce the amount of calories you
consume, your body will call on the excess fat stores
in your body to provide energy. If you add exercise to
the equation, more energy is required and more fat
will be used.
Using excess fat as energy and burning more
calories is a great way to enhance weight loss. It is
for that reason that Diet 360 contains ingredients that
are designed to increase metabolism to burn more
calories and promote the formation of lean muscle
mass versus fat mass.†
One of those ingredients, fucoxanthin, has vaulted
into the weight loss spotlight over the last few years,
and for good reason. Fucoxanthin actually goes to
work within the fat cells, where it has the ability to
increase the energy expenditure of the cell.† This
increased metabolism aids the body in burning
calories, which is one of the goals of any weight
loss program.†
Unlike many other ingredients that boost
metabolism, fucoxanthin does so without stimulating
the central nervous system, a common side effect of
many weight loss supplements.†
Finally, Diet 360 contains a clinically studied
decaffeinated green coffee extract called SlimPure™.
In addition to the weight loss results discussed, SlimPure
was shown to significantly increase the ratio of muscle
mass to fat mass.†

we don’t often think of probiotics—
