Opening up dialogue about mental health issues was on the minds of Canadians last week but in Moose Jaw, it was closer to heart with the announcement of a mental health program initiated by Alliance Health medical clinic and the Moose Jaw YMCA. Dr. Mark Lemstra of Alliance Health announced the free community-based initiative for 500 local residents with depression to attend at no cost. “The Mental Health Initiative is an innovative program to address gaps in existing care,” he said. Lemstra believes this initiavie will fill the void. The announcement brought out health professionals and dignitaries in support: Dustin Duncan, the Honourable Minister of Health; Rick Bourassa, Moose Jaw Chief of Police, Taylor Mickleborough, President, Moose Jaw Police Assoc.; Dr. Oyewale Afolabi, Psychiatrist, Alliance Health; Dr. Brad Thorpe, Medical Director, Alliance Health; Dr. Mark Vooght, Medical Health Officer, FHHR; Phyllis O’Connor, Acting Exec. Dir., Canadian Mental Health Assoc. (Sk); Jeff Fox, CEO, Moose Jaw YMCA; Dr. Mark Lemstra, Owner, Alliance Health medical clinic; local MLA’s Warren Michelson and Greg Lawrence, and Mayor Deb Higgins. The Honourable Minister of Health, Dustin Duncan said he was encouraged to see community partnerships that promote awareness and understanding surrounding mental health. With 131 community consultations over the course of four months, Dr. Lemstra said implementing the initiative has the full support of the community. Each resident in the program will receive mental wellness therapy, exercise therapy and social support over the course of eight weeks (40 sessions) beginning this February. The professional services will take place at Alliance Health medical clinic and the exercise sessions will be held at the local YMCA. Most individuals with depression do not seek out help; only a mere 6% who suffer with mental health will make an attempt to receive treatment. The stigma associated with mental COMPLETE PLUMBING, HEATING SALES & SERVICE By Joan Ritchie illness is one of the biggest barriers. This program is working to break down the barriers, strengthened by mental health services and support. Mental health is just as important as physical health to a person’s overall well-being. Do not suffer in silence but take steps to better your mental health. Participants in the initiative will be requested to obtain a referral from their family physician or psychiatrist to become involved. The patient will have had to have had a major depressive episode lasting at least two weeks in duration. They need to be 18 years of age to give written informed consent. Participants will need to attend with a family member or friend as a social support. If none available, someone else will stand in, as well as support offered from peers and clinicians. The Moose Jaw Police Service will be the first organization to incorporate the mental health initiative into its training. “Community well-being is closely connected with community safety,” said Rick Bourassa, Moose Jaw Chief of Police. “Police officers are not immune to the effects of mental health issues, and it is important not only for our members, but also for our community, that we work together to improve mental health outcomes. It is time to de-stigmatize mental health and mental health treatment services.” Taylor Mickleborough, President of Moose Jaw Police Association is excited that the police are leading the way. “We do see mental health effects in our profession,” he said, “and I am looking forward to seeing the benefits we get from this.” Seniors get a 10% DISCOUNT Making Warmth & Comfort Efficient Furnace, Plumbing & Air Conditioning Maintenance 100% Guaranteed Workmanship 306.694.0028 • 301 River St. W. The group has recently held two different events to help raise funds for this trip. Notably, a special concert featuring Stadacona Soul was held at the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery on January 22. The event was a huge success. “It was a really fun night and everyone had a blast. We raised about $5,500 that night,” said Jackie Wilson, a local nurse who will be part of the team. “We are getting pretty close to our target. We also had a steak night and that was good as well. We sold out of tickets for both events and so Moose Jaw has been very supportive.” The team is made up of seven individuals, four of which are from Moose Jaw. The other three members are from Regina. The bulk of their work will consist of hernia repairs and gallbladder removals. The goal is to complete around 30 operations. Each member of the team has paid for their own flights but they have been raising funds to purchase laparoscopic equipment for the local hospital and to reimburse patients for their hospital fees. In addition to the steak night and the concert, the team has a GoFundMe page that has brought in over $3,000. The goal was to raise about $10,000, although Wilson says the dropping Canadian dollar has adjusted expectations somewhat. That being said, she believes they will meet their goal. Wilson says it is an exciting time for the team, as they get ready to leave. “I am so excited. I am a little nervous now that it is really getting real and it is happening, but we are looking forward to this opportunity,” said Wilson. “The team has started gathering all the supplies and so packing all that up has been keeping us busy. We are eager to get there.” You can still support the team by visiting their GoFundMe page and donating to their cause. Search for “Moose Jaw Medical MissionGuatemala.” The team’s experience will be discussed in detail during a Noon Hour Slides presentation at the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery on March 9. Four per cent tax increase sought by city budget by Ron Walter For Moose Jaw Express Franchise fees from natural gas and electricity charges fell by $288,000 from lower commodity prices. Appeals on commercial property assessments cost $110,000, offsetting some of the gain from new building. If past policy is followed that loss will be assessed to all other commercial owners for a 1.5 per cent hike on commercial taxes. Spending is up $2.82 million to $44.86 million. Public works, including $540,000 photo radar costs, is up $836,000. General government increases $417,000 from arbitration and city clerk programs. The cast iron water main costs soaks up $2.43 million. The transit system subsidy is $834,000, an increase of $33,000. The fire department, reorganized with layoff of alarm operators and changes to platoon numbers, needs $536,000 less this year. Council will hear third party requests Feb. 8 and will discuss the operating and capital budgets Feb. 19 and 20. City property taxes on the average Moose Jaw home will increase by $49 if city council approves the operating budget tabled at council in January. That amount on increased tax is based on average assessed market value of $207,000 and equals about $4 a month, finance director Brian Acker told council. The budget proposes a four per cent property tax increase to cover a $971,000 shortfall in revenues. The budget is based on maintaining the same service as 2015 with the exception of $463,000 in new spending. The new spending includes $265,000 for labour contract negotiations and arbitration; $130,000 for city clerk use; $39,000 for cemetery improvements and storm channel drainage; and $19,000 for a temporary treasury clerk. Three third partner requests are: the Mosaic Place/Yara Fieldhouse complex of $1 million for an increase of $518,000; the police service for $196,000 more; and the public library wants $28,000 extra. The tax increase includes 2.25 per cent already approved by council as a special tax to help finance cast iron water main replacement. Acker noted the photo radar camera will take in almost $1.1 million but $540,000 is needed for operating costs. City management recommends council use the SGI camera revenues for a safety initiative reserve as suggested by SGI. The Cities of Regina and Saskatoon are putting excess photo radar money into such a reserve. Revenues will increase $1.85 million to $43.87 million. Major revenue increases are photo radar, $1.1 million; assessment growth, $299,000; overhead fees on infrastructure works, $298,000. Who loves you baby? We do! Admission is free. by Assistant Coach Mark O’Leary self out of bed 10 minutes earlier on a regular basis to do something this simple, how are you going to do what it takes to be a better athlete when things really get tough? Now that we have all agreed that everyone is capable of finding the time to make a breakfast; let’s look at some ideas. First, for the grab and go. Soft boiled eggs and one or two pieces of fruit. Every Sunday I boil some eggs and keep them in the fridge for the week. You won’t find many foods better for you than eggs. And yes eat the WHOLE egg. The yolk gets a bad rap but trust me, it is the best part for you. So, depending on your size and needs, grab 2, 3, 5 eggs, a banana or anything else that’s handy, and you’re out the door. Option two takes slightly more time but still well under ten minutes. Again, the amount of ingredients you use depends on the person. Throw some good old fashioned oatmeal or quick oats in a bowl, cover with water and some chopped up fruit. (I like chopped apple). Sprinkle with a ton of cinnamon and put it in the microwave for 2-4 minutes depending on the consistency you like. When it’s done, stir in some Greek yogurt or protein powder, drizzle with some natural nut butter or unsweetened coconut and you have a big bowl of awesome. Not a fan of oatmeal? Leave it out and just have a big bowl of berries with yogurt and some fats sprinkled on top. The last idea is a smoothie. This is my favourite. When you load it up with enough good ingredients, it will not only taste unreal but it will keep you full for hours. Below is the ingredients for my go to, but remember the combinations are endless and you can switch it up to your liking. My Go To Smoothie: -1 scoop vanilla protein powder -1 heaping cup of frozen cherries -one frozen banana (I peel a bunch and store them in a ziplock in the freezer) -1 handful of frozen spinach cubes (trust me you don’t even taste it) -1 handful of unsweetened shredded coconut -Then I just add water and blend until everything is smooth (unsweetened almond milk also works well) There you have it, by no means is this all your options but 3 simple ways to start your morning with a bang. So please please, kids AND parents, stop with the fruit loops, bagels and jams. I know they are the popular choice for most, but you’re not like most. You’re an athlete living a winner’s lifestyle. This is just one more way to set yourself apart from the pack and do what others won’t. So get to the kitchen and FIRE UP! Moose Jaw library archivist, artist and photographer Ken Dalgarno succeeded on all counts with his book: Badlands, a Geography of Metaphors. His is the first photo book on the bizarre badlands; his images are of different angles than most; and his techniques ensure no one else will ever create the same photo image of some subjects. Dalgarno explained his passion and achievements to the Moose Jaw Canadian Club, showing images from 10 badlands regions in Saskatchewan, Alberta, North Dakota and Montana. Intrigued by the Alberta badlands, he was surprised to discover no one has ever done a photo book on them. “In Alberta (Dinosaur Provincial Park) it was like walking into an outdoor art gallery. You can see the layers of history. I was mesmerized by the badlands.” He took his camera into four Saskatchewan badlands – Avonlea, Killdeer, Big Muddy and Roche Percee – and four in Alberta, using “golden hours” of dawn and dusk light to capture spectacular images. The Avonlea badlands (45 minutes from Moose Jaw on private property) have “everything in a badlands: buttes, hoodoos, bentonite clay with eroded side fissures.” All his photos are printed on aluminum. “The aluminum process really makes the photo pop” and the lightweight durable piece is easier and safer to transport. He creates unique images with high range dynamic photography – a technique using multiple timed exposures, later blending them into one image. Three eight-second exposures of a butte with background clouds “gives a chance for the clouds to actually move and a sky that is really aggressive” in the final product. Some photos are with a spotlight on the subject revealing awesome colours and texture. One of his cool photos, a 200-year-old cottonwood tree in the middle of parched badlands, was almost never shot. He only did the cottonwood trail in Dinosaur Provincial Park after a guide told him about five unique trees on this trail. Cottonwood roots need to touch water, so they usually grow only on river banks. “How these survived is a mystery.” Some branches on the cottonwood in his book are gnarled and dead. “You’re looking at a tree that is alive and dead at the same time.” Trudging through badlands, often with his wife Lucy, Dalgarno has seen a lot of strange things. “There’s a lot of stuff in the badlands. There’s rattlesnakes; there’s scorpions; there’s black widow spiders. In all my travels, I’ve never seen one snake.” His book led to numerous exhibitions and articles with the latest until March 5 at the Home Heritage Gallery in Calgary. A CBC-TV program, The Exhibitionists, will feature him on Feb. 14. REFLECTIVE MOMENTS On-line surveys offer elusive truths One day a few years ago when I didn’t have much scheduled to keep me busy, I signed up to take regular on-line surveys, with no less than three on-line survey providers. Joyce Walter The topics vary For Moose Jaw Express from what meals we eat away from home, why we do it, with whom, and how much we pay. The quality of the food, the style of cuisine, the beverages offered, and the ambiance of the establishment in addition to the satisfaction with the service do not escape the survey’s content. In other surveys, my opinion is asked about financial services, the best choice in automobiles, whether someone in the family has specific medical conditions, what over-the-counter medicine is popular in our house, which health club we use or don’t use and what grocery items find their way into our shopping carts. I refuse to answer many personal questions and as a result, am often told I don’t qualify for this survey. But there is always a chance to participate in another survey. The rewards are points with which I may bid on certain items offered as prizes as a thank you for participating. So far the only prize I have managed to successfully re- ceive is two $5 coupons for a beverage at a popular coffee provider. With that record, it is hardly worth my time to take the surveys but I persist, especially with one survey group. Even if my opinions don’t matter and I am told so, I have a chance to test my knowledge of how Canadian men and women respond to certain questions. My proximity to the correct answer provides more of those opportunities to win kitchen appliances and other gadgets. Question: How many Canadian men surveyed said they knowingly ate insects: I said 15 per cent. True answer: 19 per cent. Question: How many Canadian women use disposable razors? I said 77 per cent. True answer: 58 per cent. Question: How many Canadian women have had a pie in the face? I said 12 per cent. True answer: 6 per cent. Question: How many Canadian women said they are on a diet? Question: How many Canadian women have suffered a heart attack? I said 25 per cent. True answer: 68 per cent. Question: How many Canadian women said there is a video of them online? Ron Walter can be reached at [email protected] I said 21 per cent. True answer: 11 per cent. Question: How many Canadian women know how to macarena? I said: 21 per cent. True answer: 52 per cent. Question: How many Canadian men have been on a blind date? I said 50 per cent. True answer: 36 per cent. Question: How many Canadian men help in the kitchen? I said 40 per cent. True answer: 41 per cent. Question: How many Canadian women consider themselves risk takers? I said 22 per cent. True answer: 29 per cent. Question: How many Canadian women have sewn an article of clothing? I said 86 per cent. True answer: 89 per cent. Question: How many Canadian men have less than three pairs of shoes? I said 11 per cent. True answer: 21 per cent. It isn’t official but in my opinion, I am not doing too badly in figuring out what some random Canadians are saying. I have earned some points and I have made my bids. I await notification of prizes coming my way. But I have my own questions: why would any man knowingly eat insects and why do so many women know how to Macarena? Maybe I should conduct my own surveys. WakamowValley will hold its annual Shake Off the Winter Blues night on Friday, February 26 at the Sportsman Centre. Two great acts will hit the stage, including Call Me Mildy from Regina. “They have been described as being a true melting pot of styles. Get ready for some rockin’ blues, some R&B, and a sort of country/rock kind of thing. There is even a little bit of reggae thrown in. They are really eclectic and they put on a really great, upbeat show,” said Margaret Moran, CEO of the Wakamow Valley Authority. The Kirby Sewell Band will headline the event, recently named New Artist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards. Kirby Sewell was also nominated for male vocalist of the year. The group is renowned for their rollicking performances. “The Kirby Sewell Band has been here before. He’s a big guy with a big voice and he sounds fantastic. He sounds a little bit like Van Morrison. He sings the blues from the depth of his soul…It is a really good sound,” said Moran. “They play great, original music and they are fun to dance to. That is what Shake Off the Winter Blues is all about; you want to be able to get up and dance and have a great time. He definitely provides the music for that.” There will be both a silent and live auction with a number of great prizes to bid on, including a tour of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds hangar and a chance to meet some of the Snowbirds. All proceeds from the event will go towards building a new, all-inclusive playground to replace the one in Kinsmen-WellesleyPark that was destroyed in June of 2015. “This gives us an opportunity to redesign that whole playground. What we will do is make it an all-inclusive playground. We will have a surface on it that will accommodate both wheelchairs and strollers,” said Moran. “The social skills that you gain from playing on a playground are so important for children. And learning through play in a natural environment is that much better because they also get to learn about the natural world.” Wakamow has raised just over $15,000 for the playground project through donations and the Festival of Flavours event this past November. The goal is to raise $75,000. Moran believes that goal is well within reach. “We’re hoping that if we get enough money between fundraising, grants and donations, that we will be putting in the playground in 2016. We want to get it back up and running again.” Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30. Entertainment will begin at 7:30. Tickets are $60 each and that includes dinner and entertainment. Tickets can be purchased at the WakamowValley office (276 Home St. E.). Call 306-692-2717 for more information. The band recently won the Maple Blues Award for New Artist or Group of the Year. Lead singer Kirby Sewell says it was an honour to be recognized. “The band has been together for seven years so, arguably, we are not new but we are new to them. We are reaching across the country,” said Sewell. “It’s a rare thing for a western Canadian band to even be nominated so to be nominated by your peers from across the country…and to be put on that list for the public to vote is pretty cool.” Sewell was also nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year. “It kind of shocked me to be in that group with those guys. Of course, Matt Andersen won for the second year. I do think the public voted pretty strongly for me though. But I lost to Matt Andersen and that guy is an incredible vocalist and he is very wellknown in this country. I was pretty humbled just to be beside him.” Perhaps part of the band’s success can be attributed to the collaboration between Sewell and guitarist/producer Neil Gunhold. “Neil writes a lot of great songs for my voice,” said Sewell. “Life and circumstances and relationships happen over the years and he picks up on what is going on in my life and he really hits home with the lyrics. It is almost like I wrote the song. It is kind of weird but it is a wonderful relationship because I am more of a front guy and I wear all the hats — I promote and market the band, I do all the social media, and I book the band. Obviously, I’m a busy guy. He takes care of the musical direction of the band and it works really well.” The band has developed a great, modern sound that is raw and powerful. Sewell notes they are not a traditional blues band. Rather, they want to put their own spin on the styles such as blues and soul and turn it into something unique. You definitely don’t want to miss out on seeing this up-and-coming band electrify the stage at Shake Off the Winter Blues. “The band is a very emotional, visceral display of the things we are talking about. Sometimes we are talking about things that are hard, like relationships gone band. Sometimes we are talking about love and sometimes we’re just talking about stupid, funny stuff. I am just being myself,” said Sewell. “You are going to see a passionate display of original blues rock born on the Canadian prairies. The make-up of the band is unique, as guitarist Dale Thomas uses an eight-string guitar, bassist Phil Nordin plays a six-string bass, and drummer Gary Graham plays electronic drums. The group is excited to perform at Shake Off the Winter Blues on Friday, February 26. Lead singer Greg Mildenberger is from Regina. He has been playing in bands around the province for nearly a decade, mostly in cover bands. Call Me Mildy was formed in 2013. “I used to be in cover bands but I wanted to create a band around my own original bands. We started as a trio for the first half a year or so ago, and then I decided to make it into a four piece and have a dedicated bass player,” said Mildenberger. “That allowed me to expand the sound and play harmonica. That was a big deal for me because that is one of the main instruments that I play and that allowed me to focus on that and weave it into our songs.” Call Me Mildy is not a typical blues band, incorporating elements of rockabilly, reggae, and southern rock into their sound. Mildenberger saysz he likes exploring other genres and ensuring each setlist has variety. “Some of my die-hard blues buddies don’t call me blues, they say I am bluesy. I would describe myself as blues in the same sense as Colin James, George Thorogood, Ben Harper, or the Black Keys. Those are my influences. I am not B.B. King and I am not Buddy Guy and we are not playing guitar licks for 45 minutes,” said Mildenberger. “I have been one of the organizers of the blues festival in Regina for about 10 years and so I have had the opportunity to see a lot of Grammy and Juno winners…I have always found The Bentley 16924 01.16 Join us for our Chinese New Year Dinner at The Bentley by Revera. 69 LB EA EA BEEF SHORTRIBS SIRLOIN STEAKS I D EAL FOR B B Q PORK BACKRIBS “When I recruited the guys for Call Me Mildy, I made them a couple of promises. One of those promises is that when I write songs, they get to add their own parts to it. That way, it’s not like they are just playing someone else’s bass line or whatever. Along with that, I wanted them to be as creative as they can be…There is a lot more satisfaction for me — and I think it’s also true for the guys — to play original songs because it is something that we created and we built.” Call Me Mildy is currently putting the finishing touches on their first album. If a situation seems too good to be true, it probably is. Telephone calls can also be used to obtain cash by saying that a relative, usually a grandchild, has been in an accident and needs immediate help. Take a deep breath, stay calm and ask questions and details about the accident. Say that you will contact the child’s parents. Do not wire money. Once the transaction has been done, the funds cannot be retrieved. These calls can be traced and reported by dialling *57 after the call is finished. Do not be ashamed or afraid to speak to someone you trust, if you feel you are being taken advantage of by people, possibly even neighbors, relatives or acquaintances. Trusting your feelings and asking for help are very important. A resident commented, “It was good to be reminded about things I already knew.” Another agreed, “It’s all common sense, but this information was a good reminder. We try to look out for one another here.” Other valuable lessons learned included reminders on protecting purses and credit cards. In Moose Jaw, if you receive questionable mail, telephone calls or requests, they can be reported to the City Police. Dozens of residents of the Bentley Rivera received some good advice. Moose Jaw Police Cst. Landon Giraudier and his partner Kent Westrom answered questions about senior safety and gave advice about staying secure in a number of situations. The tips covered a wide range of topics. They began by saying that personal safety was very important. They suggested getting a cell phone to use in emergencies; walk confidently; do not keep identification on key rings and stay in groups. They stressed the need to follow instincts, and to get away from situations that cause discomfort. They cautioned not to carry large amounts of cash. Women should have their purses on their shoulders and even under jackets; men should keep their wallets in their front pockets. Purses should never be left open in shopping carts. This creates a tempting situation for thieves. When shopping, park close to store entrances, transport packages in the trunk and don’t go alone. They gave a list of people to beware of, including those who tell sad stories to obtain money. They spoke of a trick that pairs use; one asks for help to find an item in a store while the victim is distracted, the other goes through their cart looking for cash. There are also well-dressed random people who approach clients at bank teller machines. Cst. Westrom stressed that banks do not use civilians to do internal investigations. Cst. Giraudier went on to say that varying your routine can help. Visiting Inez and Pat were impressed with the presentation. BONUS! BONUS! BONUS! BONUS! BONUS! The subject changed to another matter of interest. On the way home Yours Truly thought about that comment. As a one-time serious male chauvinist, (in my mind, females had three roles: kitchen, children and church), but later converted to the need for gender equality by my bride, that comment didn’t seem fair. An incident in our household recently gave me reason for second thoughts on the issue. At the mid-January Warriors home game, the announcer thanked everyone for attending, reminding us to come to the next home game Jan. 31. At least that was the message I heard. A week later my partner in life told me I’d be attending a Sunday afternoon game on Jan. 24 “No,”I responded. “That game is the last day of January. That’s what they announced at the last hockey game.” She insisted she was right. Yours truly slunk into the basement “gopher hole”and the safety of the computer. Several days passed. She kept on with the same comments. I politely presented my comment and left it at that. Then one morning the radio informed listeners the game was on Sunday afternoon. What? Was I wrong? I was certain of what the announcer said at the game. My partner continued talking about the upcoming Sunday game, bolstering her argument with the radio comments. Yours Truly was having second thoughts. Memory at this age is no longer what it was. I’ve been known many times to be wrong when my partner has a different set of facts. She has this victorious cheer when she wins one of these piddly disputes: ‘you’re never right, admit it.’ One evening on the way to dinner we got into it. She offered to bet me dinner that she was right. I backed off —having been on the wrong end of too many of these bets over 46 years. Next morning she was standing in the kitchen, firmly grasping a Warriors game schedule. “You know that Sunday Warriors game, it is on the 31st,”she said as if mentioning the temperature outside. No apology, no regrets from her. The last January day box in the schedule actually contained two days. But with the need for a 4 p.m. time, there was no line through the date to indicate two days coverage. “So I was right,”I crowed, sensing a rare victory in one of our disputes. “It was the Warriors’fault,”she repeated. Still no apology, no regrets. “I was right. Where’s my apology like you always ask for?” “It was the Warriors’fault,”she repeated. I pleaded, threw my pride out the window: “You mean I’m right once in all these years and I’m not getting an apology?” “It was the Warriors’fault.” Which raises the question: How do you successfully argue with your wife? Are you comfortable managing your daily routines? Can you get around to stores, restaurants, and social activities? How much support would you have in an emergency? Do loved ones worry about you and do your children need peace of mind that you’re safe? Weigh the expenses associated with all of your options. Those include things like income, mortgage or rent payments, property taxes and relocation expenses, along with any renovations you’d like to make for aesthetics or for aging in place purposes. If you are considering living in a Seniors Community, my advice is to find one where you feel the most comfortable and negotiate the rate later. Don’t rule out any residences based only on price. When deciding where to live in retirement or whether to move, think of future life stages and priorities regarding things like affordability, climate, proximity to family and friends, recreational activities, and opportunities for continued work. BIZWORLD Style of stock market use dependent on investor personality By Ron Walter For Moose Jaw Express For most veteran investors, investment plans revolve around the ‘buy and hold’school of thought. Under the principles of buy and hold, an investor selects financially solid companies, buys at hopefully lower value and waits for the company’s multi-year business plan to kick in, providing a gain in stock price. Having a healthy dividend to pay investors a return while waiting is a good idea, but not always necessary. This kind of plan is suitable for a conservative investor. Simply put, that is the buy and hold investment philosophy. The other main investment philosophy used by investors is momentum investment. Momentum investors time, or try to time, the market. The idea is to catch a stock just after it starts a rise and then to follow it up, making a nice gain, and getting out before the price declines. This investment strategy has gained more advocates in the last 25 years with improved use of technology and lower trading commissions. The discount broker and the $9.95 online trade make momentum investing seem a lot easier and less expensive than the two per cent full service brokers charge. The use of instantly updated charts online has helped momentum trading gain a foothold. Most everybody consults charts and interprets basic benchmarks before buying and selling. Computer software built for program trading uses momentum techniques. And that creates much of the market volatility we see these days. The trend to hold stocks for a few weeks rather than for years reflects popularity of momentum players. Every once in awhile, someone engaged in momentum plays writes a piece about how this is the end of buy and hold investing. The authors are, of course, trying to switch more buy and holders into their camp. Their reasoning is based on the notion that momentum investing will keep stocks in a trading range forever and these stocks will never make the big long term moves they used to achieve for buy and hold investors. Momentum advocates forget the stock market is a bunch of individual businesses, each with its own growth or no-growth pattern; each with its own business plan and sector issues. Buy and hold investors seek solid management and finances in a desirable sector. Momentum investors play the day-to-day or week-to-week price movements using technology to guide them. Investing solely in a stock’s momentum may appeal to the mathematically inclined, but long term company fortunes are derived from growth in that sector and the company capitalizing on opportunities. Which makes more sense: basing an investment decision on the mathematical probability of a price movement, or basing an investment decision on research about the company and the industry? The philosophy that investors choose should depend on whether they sleep better at night using that plan. Most important of all is knowing which investor type you are, and planning for that is critical. Incidentally, of all the studies I’ve seen comparing the two styles, buy and hold always has the edge over the long term. The difference boils down to owning the race horse, or only betting on certain races. CAUTION: Remember when investing, consult your adviser and do your homework before buying any security. Bizworld does not recommend investments. Ron Walter can be reached at [email protected] MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Wednesday, February 03, 2016 • PAGE A13 THUNDER CREEK Industrial Ltd. Initiatives like Bell Let’s Talk Day Greg Lawrence MLA have done a great job in breaking down barriers and highlighting how important it is to start a healthy dialogue. Talking builds awareness, acceptance and action. Recognizing that we haven’t achieved full acceptance and understanding, I want to thank those who participated in the Bell Let’s Talk campaign this past week. It serves as an important reminder that 2 out of 3 people struggling with their mental health do so in silence. I am encouraged to see our community take a leadership role on mental health issues. Dr. Mark Lemstra of Alliance Health has announced a partnership with the Moose Jaw YMCA that will provide an eight week offering of mental and physical treatment and support to 500 residents, at no charge. The Moose Jaw Police Service has also shown great leadership in being the first group to participate in this initiative, helping to de-stigmatize mental health and mental health treatment among first responders in our community. Our mental health is every bit as important as our physical health. While it may not always feel natural or comfortable to talk about it, it’s important to take that step. If the new Mental Health Initiative is something that may be a benefit to you or someone you know, you can talk to your physician about a referral. Our government has a goal for a healthy Saskatchewan, with healthy communities and healthy people. We know that the journey to sound mental health can take on many forms based on the unique needs of individuals. Continuing to work with health care providers is key to ensure a proper course of treatment, which could include prescribed medications, physical activity, therapy and more. A key focus of our government is improving access to care, and I am happy to say that we are seeing reduced wait times for mental health and addictions services. Currently, across all levels of need, over 85 per cent of clients are being seen within their benchmark wait times. This past December, 100 per cent of clients in Five Hills Health Region, across all categories of need, were seen within the recommended wait times. With four psychiatrists working in Five Hills, local residents have good access to mental health services. The recruitment and retention of physicians is also a high priority and we continue to take steps to increase the number of physicians working in the province. Since we formed government in 2007, there are more than 500 additional doctors in the province. This is an important achievement in improving access to mental health services, but we know there are areas where we can still make improvements. Together, we will continue to make awareness, acceptance and access to mental health services a priority. David Stymeist’s paintings display a unique perspective. Andrew Meredith’s art is inspired by his time in Nova Scotia. Each piece features bright colours and is painted in his distinct style. His artwork is now on display in a joint show known as “New Waves” at the Mosaic Gallery in the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre. Meredith’s work is displayed alongside fellow artist David Stymeist. Nearly every one of Meredith’s paintings is surrounded by a border of fish. “I’m originally from Nova Scotia and so I wanted these paintings to be a reflection of where I’m from. I thought it would be really unique to do something other than prairie scenes. The whole show is inspired by Nova Scotia,” said Meredith. “The fish border and that folk style is something I have been doing for almost 10 years. In the beginning it was sort of experimental and I would just do a couple of pieces in this style but this is mostly the type of work that I do now.” There are some pieces in the show that do not use the fish border. Meredith says these pieces are a good example of the type of work he was doing earlier in his career. “For me, it symbolizes my work when I was using water colours; it sort of mimics a water colour painting I would have done maybe 10 years ago, although it was done in acrylic. You can see what my work was like in the beginning and what it is like now. It is funny how much your direction can change.” Meredith is, of course, well-known for his participation in the Royal Canadian Mint’s “My Canada, My Inspiration” design contest. His entry, “Winter Fun,” finished in the top five in the “Our Passions” category. The winning design will be unveiled in 2017 to coincide with Canada’s 150th anniversary. The exhibit also features the artwork of David Stymeist. His paintings look like something out of a classic children’s book. He is a largely self-taught artist whose artwork has evolved over the years. “I’m inspired by totemism, anthropomorphism, and world cultures. Ostensibly, these are pictures for children but they really aren’t — they are pictures for adults who are maybe nostalgic about childhood. The story behind them is they contain characters from a children’s book who are off duty and who aren’t acting out a moralistic narrative in a script penned by an adult authority. They are off duty, they are on their own, and they are doing various things they want to do,” said Stymeist. “I used to paint people who look like people but I got bored with it. Now I paint animal people. They are sort of like our totemic ancestors.” See something you like at the show? You can purchase 5x7 cards featuring Meredith’s artwork for just $5 each. The cards are now on sale at the Mosaic Gallery. “New Waves” is on display until February 27. I Can Barely Last 72 Minutes! by Dr. Steven Heidinger, Moose Jaw Chiropractor If you’re lucky enough, you have enjoyed or are looking forward to an upcoming vacation. The all-inclusive beach resort vacation is a common getaway for Canadian snowbirds. If you have been fortunate to do one, you’ll likely come back revitalized, re-energized and de-stressed…all very healthful reasons to go. But what may be even healthier is the extreme opposite of “all inclusive”. Instead of a week of eating and drinking all you want, would you ever consider a vacation from eating? A fasting vacation? Apparently there are resorts popping up around the world where no food is included at all, and actually no food is available to any of the guests even if they wanted it. Why would anyone wish to do this voluntarily, you may ask? Well, there is growing research showing potentially dramatic benefits to one’s health that go far beyond just weight loss. In fact most fasting programs are not even being promoted for losing weight. The research, which first started with mice and is now being confirmed in human trials, shows that fasting can boost the immune system. In test subjects who fasted for 2 to 4 days, interesting changes were seen in their immune systems. Older, damaged cells of immunity were destroyed and replaced with newly regenerated, healthier cells. In times of fasting, the body goes into a “conservation of energy” mode. Killing off older, damaged cells is one way the body conserves energy. Think about what happens when we get sick? When we get the flu, or most other ailments, we tend to lose our appetite. This is Mother Nature’s way of saying, “Stop eating!!! You need to save your energy for your immune system!” Mother Nature is telling us to fast. You’d be surprised how much energy is required to digest food. Another very significant finding was that the blood of fasting individuals showed lowered levels of a certain hormone known to be associated with cancer, tumour growth and aging. This hormone, IGF-1, when high, can interfere with the regeneration of the immune system. This study on stem cell regeneration and reversed immunosuppression was published in the June 2014 edition of Cell Stem Cell. It may be an interesting read for some. There are some who may question whether this is dangerous, not eating anything at all for 72 hours (3 days) or more. Three weeks, apparently, is how long we can survive without food, so a 3 day fast is definitely in the realm of a safe exercise for most people. Water however is a different story. It is thought that we can survive only 3 days without water. This is why fasting programs still promote the intake of water. It should be noted that fasting may be dangerous for some, specifically diabetics. If you are considering a fast, getting clearance from a health professional may be in your best interests. Monitored fasting may be the best way to go rather than attempting one on your own at home over the course of a weekend. A “Fasting Retreat” would have professionals available to monitor your health, plus there wouldn’t be pantries filled with cookies and chips ready to sabotage your fast. It’s as if Jesus is giving me His encouragement and guidance for the day ahead. One song that’s been going through my head is “O Taste and See” by Bethel Music Kids. The lyrics go like this: “O Taste and see that the Lord is good. O taste and see that the Lord is good to me. You have turned my mourning into dancing, Put off my rags and clothed me with gladness and I will arise and I will praise you. I’ll sing and not be silent. O Lord my God I will give thanks to you forever. I will live only for you. I will lift these hands up to you. I will dance before you. I will shout it I will shout it to you.” Because I’ve arisen with this on my mind, I’ve been playing this and meditating on the words of this song. It comes from Psalm 34:8 “O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” This verse says many things to me. First off, I think of the word “taste.” That word conjures up images of all kinds of delicious food. One little hobby I enjoy is taking pictures of food I’ve prepared. I know. I know. You may not understand that part of me but ...whatever, right? It’s just something I like to do. When I think of “tasting” that the Lord is good, I think of how creative He was when He created food. There is no end to deliciousness with the vibrant, nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables at our disposal. If we can feast on the Lord... feast on all His goodness, His faithfulness, His mercy, His grace, His love... we can be satisfied as we would be after enjoying a scrumptious meal. The word “see” makes me think of all of the picturesque landscape throughout our blessed province, vast nation and around the world. To allow our eyes to drink in all that beauty... oh my goodness; there are SO, SO many beautiful things to behold. I’m almost bursting with inspiration as I meditate on some of those awe inspiring pictures I’ve snapped in my mind’s eye. Both you and I know that a picture just doesn’t capture what we can see with the naked eye. My family was able to take a tour to Ontario when I was in my Grade 12 year. We drove through the northern states and then up into Sault Ste. Marie where we entered Canada. As we wound our way through rocky terrain interspersed with the most amazing maple trees, we found ourselves gasping around each corner we rounded. We took many pictures only to realize when they were “developed” (yes that was about 25 years ago!) we realized the pictures just couldn’t capture what we really SAW. Allow your eyes to SEE God’s goodness. He has brought so much beauty to our world; sometimes we just have to look for it. “How BLESSED is the (one) who takes refuge in Him!” This is a timely verse for the days we live in. As we will taste and see His goodness, drinking in His provision, His beauty (in other words, developing a relationship with Him), we can take refuge in Him, finding protection and wisdom for our days ahead. What a comfort. What a gift. Meditate on His goodness. Breathe in the beauty that is around you. Give Him praise for all He has done for us ...and for what He has to come. He is a good, good God. “You become my delicious feast even when my enemies dare to fight. You anoint me with the fragrance of Your Holy Spirit, You give me all I can drink of until my heart overflows. So why would I fear the future?” Scripture reference: Psalm 23:5,6a MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Wednesday, February 03, 2016 • PAGE A23 SUNDAY EVENING 6:00 Phone: 306.694.1322 Fax: 888.241.5291 32 Manitoba St. West, Moose Jaw SK S6H 1P7 Publisher: Robert Ritchie - [email protected] www.mjvexpress.com Editor: Joan Ritchie - [email protected] Sales: John Gibson - [email protected] Bob Calvert - [email protected] Wanda Hallborg - [email protected] Fraser Tolmie - [email protected] Thank you to all the contributing writers, without your time and support, the paper would not look the same. This week the state primaries/caucus votes began, first in Iowa and then on to New Hampshire and beyond over the course of the next few months. It has become traditional for candidates to be served the food of the state while they try to woo voters to their side. On the old TV show, Roseanne, the star was co-owner of a restaurant that served loose meat sandwiches and just recently on the Sunday evening show, The Good Wife, the candidate was served those loose meat sandwiches which just happen to be a popular sandwich in Iowa. In this case, the candidate was seen spitting part of his sandwich into his serviette. He lost the battle in Iowa. Candidates visiting New Hampshire might be offered a slab of Johnny Cake slathered in butter and maple syrup. And in Alaska the special dish of the region might be some Akutag or Alaskan ice cream. In the olden days the ice cream’s main ingredient might have been whale or seal blubber, now replaced by solid Crisco. This week’s recipes, from state sites, offer recipes for three items worthy of presidential tastebuds. Iowa Loose Meat Sandwich 2 tbsps. oil 2 small onions, minced 2 lbs. lean ground beef 2 tbsps. yellow mustard 2 tbsps. white vinegar 2 tbsps. worcestershire sauce 4 tsps. sugar 1/2 tsp. garlic powder salt and pepper to taste 2 cans low sodium beef broth 6 hamburger buns pickles and minced onion for topping Heat oil in large sauté pan or skillet. Add onion and cook until translucent. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Use a potato masher to crumble the meat. Mix in other ingredients, except broth, until well combined. Add broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium/ low and simmer until all liquid is gone. Serve on toasted buns topped with pickles and minced onion. ••• New Hampshire Johnny Cakes 3/4 cup flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tbsps. sugar 2 eggs, well-beaten 1/4 cup melted shortening 1 cup sweet milk 1/4 cup white vinegar 1 1/4 cups yellow corn meal Sift flour with soda, salt and sugar. Stir in corn meal. Combine eggs, vinegar, milk and shortening. Add both mixtures together until everything is moist. Pour mixture into a greased 8x8 inch pan. Bake at 450 degrees F for 30-35 minutes. Cool and eat with maple syrup. ••• Alaskan Ice Cream (Akutag) 1 cup solid vegetable shortening (Crisco) 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup water, berry juice OR 2 cups loose snow 4 cups fresh berries (blueberries, cranberries, blackberries) In a large bowl cream vegetable shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add water, berry juice or snow and beat until well combined. Fold in berries, 1 cup at a time, until blended. Place in freezer until firm, then serve. Lunde ssessio Quick Po Laurie 306-684-2704 [email protected] FHHR CEO Cheryl Craig spoke to the concerns regarding the new hospital. A recent letter to the Quality of Care department of the new F.H. Wigmore Hospital has raised concerns regarding emergency waiting room procedures, patient care and housekeeping. Five Hills Health Region CEO, Cheryl Craig addressed the concerns presented. Since opening, she noted that the positive feedback received far outweighs the negative in the first three months of operation. She went on to say that they are aware that there are problems with housekeeping, in particular, and that they are working hard to alleviate the issues. Additional education is being provide to staff and they are monitoring situations closely. An anonymous link has been set up for staff to voice their concerns without fear of being targeted. “We take the comments and written communications very seriously,” she said. Craig pointed out that there is a learning curve involved, as the hospital has implemented many new systems, and the staff are in the process of adapting to them. She stresses that extensive training is being done to ensure the safety of the patients. As in any new situation or business, there is a period of adjustment at the start, and Cheryl feels that the kinks will be ironed out. The patient to staff ratio has remained approximately the same as in the old hospital. Patient care, privacy and safety are the primary focus of the new hospital. Over 200 staff including doctors, nurses, therapists, dietary workers, maintenance workers and housekeepers were involved in the design, and Dr. Fred Wigmore, Chief Medical Health Officer stated, “In my years of touring a thousand hospitals, this is the most intelligent hospital I’ve ever seen built in Canada.” Positive feedback has also been received through the quality of care department. This includes short ER response times and getting referrals to specialists in a timely manner. The spacious rooms are appreciated as is the quality of care from the staff. Both staff and patients have commented on the improved food service and enjoy having a choice of meals. Time is taken to orient patients and their families when they arrive. If you would like to comment, you can reach the Five Hills Health Region through their website at www.fhhr.ca PAGE A26 • MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Wednesday, February 03, 2016 Inter-denominational service focuses on unity Elaine Blanchard, formerly of BLANCHARD Obituaries bydistrict, Giselepassed Perrault for Moose Jaw Express the Parkbeg away after a short, courageous battle with cancer, at Pioneers Lodge in sity, just as a foot is very different from an eye, Moose Jaw on August 10, 2010. but both are necessary and united in the body. This very special event will help to raise vital funds for Moose Jaw’s Community Cats. “Across our country, as well as in our own backyard, a little known crisis has been playing out; the tragedy of pet overpopulation & homelessness.” says Anne Marciszyn, spokesperson for SCRAPS. “Shelters are usually at capacity with cats, many never being reunited with owners; the situation is heartbreaking. Many destined to the struggles for survival on the streets, never know a warm bed, full tummy or the feeling of being cherished and loved.” This is where the work of SCRAPS is life- saving. “Working ‘upstream’, our efforts are focused on reducing populations of the homeless and unwanted feral cats,” said Marciszyn, “and on raising awareness of the critical responsibility to spay & neuter your pets. TNR (trap/neuter/ release-re home) provides hope.” Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner will delight your palate, featuring Temple Gardens Chef Curtis’ exquisite Herb chicken Entree and special THE BAND CITY STRAY CAT RESCUE AND PROTECTION SOCIETY PR E S E N TS BALL DINNER & DANCE Friday February 12 Temple Gardens Hotel & Spa 24 Fairford St. E. We do the same for executors who must settle an estate, and can also help with a number of administrative tasks to save the executor time. Initial consultations are free and informative. Why I started this business and a bit about me: A change in residence is a huge transition, and I like to help reduce the stress involved. I practised law for 13 years and worked in the not-for-profit sector as a professional fundraiser for 16 years. I wanted to do something different before retiring, and my background fits well with this work which is based in trust. My values include supporting independence, showing respect, living up to my word, and giving back to the community. What membership in BWMJ means to me: This group expands my network of contacts and resources. The women are dynamic and encouraging. I come away from meetings feeling energized and enriched by practical knowledge and a sense of community Business: Destination by Design Coaching & Consulting Owner: Jill Poulton www.destinationbydesigncoaching.com • 306-585-2123 Services provided: It is my great privilege to serve women in the pursuit of their best life, while making a living that honours who they are. I come along side busy business women to help them clarify and prioritize their focus so they can be more productive while creating a meaningful life. This is done through individual coaching and mastermind groups. Why I started this business and a bit about me: I value people and relationships, and recognize that when people in the business grow, so does the business -this includes the business owner! When people are valued, all else falls into place. It is this approach that fueled my success and those around me in the corporate world for more than 12 years, and I live it now in the entrepreneurial arena. By developing and applying leadership principles found in the programs offered by leadership author, speaker, and my mentor, John Maxwell, I am able to lead individuals and teams to greater performance and personal satisfaction. Leadership is not a role or title, it is a way of being. After all, if we can’t follow our own lead, why would anyone else? As women, we have tremendous influence in the lives around us: children, family, friends, colleagues, employees, clients, community, and so much more. It’s not about whether or not we have influence - it’s about “what are we influencing?” The greater our influence, the greater our chance for a more fulfilling and rewarding life! What membership in BWMJ means to me: I`ve been a member of BWMJ for 4 years because I love the women who are a part of it. They are smart, driven women who have a heart for people. Being around business women who value relationships, and collaboration as a means of creating success, is uplifting and encouraging. With each luncheon or committee meeting, I am continuously learning and growing either personally or professionally. Because of my level of participation and contribution to the organization, I`ve had the privilege of having members as clients over the years, and it’s exciting to be a part of that progress.
