EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING
Parents will be notified by radio, TV and/or Phone
Tree calls whenever Brandeis is to be closed
because of weather conditions. Announcements
will be between 5:30 – 8:00 a.m. over the following
radio stations: WOR (710 am), WINS (1010 am),
WHLI (1100 am), WCBS (880 am) and Cablevision
Channel 12. The school website will also show a
flashing message to reflect a school closing. Please
confirm by calling the school at 371.4747.
CALENDAR DATES
The activities listed on this calendar are expected
to be held as scheduled. However, the organizing
committees or groups will advise as to the details of
each event. Please do not make final plans until the
details are provided, since some activities may have to
be postponed, cancelled or have their dates changed.
The information regarding candle lighting times was
calculated to conform with the custom of lighting
Our primary concern is the safety and well being of
our youngsters. In order to insure their safety we ask
you to comply with the following procedures:
1. No student may leave the school campus unless
authorized by a parent. Students must be signed
out at the front desk. All students must be
accompanied by a parent or an authorized adult.
2. The security guard is employed to protect the
safety of all the building’s occupants. Please fully
cooperate with him.
3. Visitors may not park in the bus lanes at the
entrance to the school or in our parking lots at
any time. Please park in the metered parking field
adjacent to the building. Parking is not permitted
on Frost Lane. Please use extreme caution when
entering or exiting the school grounds. Detailed
regulations concerning parking and parent pickup will be sent prior to the opening of school.
4. Visitors to Brandeis are to report immediately to
the front desk upon entering the school building.
You will sign in and be given an ID badge. Please
wear this badge throughout your visit and return
it to the front desk when you leave. No one is
permitted to walk through the school without
permission and ID.
5. Every precaution is taken to safeguard the health
of the children. Each child must have a Child
Health Appraisal form on file in the Nurse’s Office.
6. Please cooperate and keep your child home if he/
she has any sign of illness. If the child contracts a
contagious disease, the school must be notified at
once. The school will notify all other parents in the
grade. When the child returns to school, he/she
must submit a doctor’s note stating that the child
is free of contagion and can be readmitted to class.
This is for the protection of each child in the class.
7. To be excused from participating in physical
education classes, a doctor’s note is required.
8. A school nurse is in attendance daily. When
illness occurs during school hours, the nurse
will notify the parent in order to arrange for
pick-up. State regulations forbid the dispensing
of patent medicines (e.g. aspirin) without
parental authorization. Prescription medicine
will be dispensed only with proper written
authorization from the family doctor.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCHOOL
If you wish to honor, memorialize or thank someone, an
appropriate acknowledgement will be sent for various
donations. Please contact the Chief Operating Officer.

PARENT INFORMATION 2015 – 2016
PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK
Please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook
regarding school procedures and protocols.
Information previously listed in the calendar will
now be listed in the handbook.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT
The State Department of Education has mandated
that all student absences be accounted for.
Students must bring a note from their parents or
doctor on the first day of return. The lack of a note
will cause an unexcused absence to be recorded.
BIRTHDAY PARTY CELEBRATIONS
The soul and purpose of a school such as ours is
violated when the laws of Shabbat and/or Kashrut
are ignored and the feeling of Mishpachah is
destroyed. It is important that all Brandeis families
be sensitive and aware of these basic Jewish laws so
as not to offend one another. As expected, children
in small classes become close friends. When
planning parties, please follow these guidelines:
A) Out of concern for the feelings of all students,
no child may be singled out for omission. You
must invite all the boys, or all the girls, or all
children in the class or on grade level. When you
cannot use one of the above options, you may
invite no more than 25% of the boys and girls in
another class.
B) Observe Kashrut and maintain the sanctity
of Shabbat and Jewish Holidays. A party is an
extension of the class group and as such, food
should be in accordance with the standards
maintained at The Brandeis School. Parties
should not be scheduled where students would
be expected to violate Shabbat and Jewish
holidays. Please be sensitive to sundown
starting times and ending times of Shabbat and
holidays. Shabbat ends 25 hours and 12 minutes
after candle lighting time.
C) Invitations, thank-you notes or gifts must not be
distributed by children in the school. They must
be mailed to the homes.
CHANUKAH GIFTS TO THE STAFF
By agreement with the staff, no Chanukah gifts are
to be given to the faculty or administration. Parents
contribute annual dues to the Parents’ Association
which then has the responsibility of apportioning
it on behalf of all the students. The emphasis is on
good taste, Jewish humility, and meaningfulness.
We urge that no individual gifts be given.
LUNCH/FOOD
Hot lunches are provided daily to participating
students of the pre-paid lunch program. Pupils
may also brown bag their school lunches. All
lunches are to be limited to Kosher Dairy or Parve
products. Packaged food must have Kosher
certification. No meat or meat products may be
brought into the building.
No homemade food may be brought into the school
for sharing.
The school and Parents’ Association will sponsor
special programs throughout the year as indicated.
Please do not send lunch on these days.
For the protection of our highly allergic students,
we are a peanut-free and sesame-free school. No
peanut or sesame products may be brought in at any
time.
PARENT-STAFF COMMUNICATION
In order to arrange for a conference with your
child’s teacher or the Head of School, please send
a written note with your child, or call the school
office. Please do not drop in for a meeting without
an appointment, as it is a disruption to the daily
school routine. No meetings with administration
will be scheduled during the prime school hours
of 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Various meetings will be held throughout the school
year. Curriculum review conferences will be held in
September so that teachers will be able to discuss
curriculum and educational goals with parents.
Parent-Teacher Conferences, which are scheduled in
the Fall and Spring, are held to discuss your child’s
individual progress.
THE BRANDEIS SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
The Brandeis School prepares the future leaders of the Jewish community. The values of Judaism, love of Eretz Yisrael/the land of Israel permeate all aspects of school
life. The children study Hebrew and Jewish texts and traditions and integrate Derekh Eretz/Jewish Ethics into their daily lives. The general studies program exceeds the
standards of neighboring schools with an environment for learning that respects the individuality of each learner and targets the needs of each student.

B’NEI MITZVOT 2015 – 2016
Leopold Low, a Jewish scholar of the nineteenth century, wrote the book The Ages of Man in Jewish
Literature in which he refers to the first of the three phases of a person’s life as the period of
preparation, and lasts until age twenty. Mishna Avot specifies the ages at which an individual should
learn certain things. The Mishna says that age “thirteen is for the fulfillment of the commandments.”
This is the age when a Jewish child learns about the mitzvot and begins to be responsible for following
them. This is knows as Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
The Bar/Bat Mitzvah, along with all the preparations, is a special time in the lives of students, families,
friends and school. One of the joys of becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is the celebration together with
classmates and school friends. At The Brandeis School, we offer that opportunity at our daily service,
either on Monday, Thursday, Rosh Chodesh or Chol Hamoed.
We look forward to sharing this special time with the following students during this school year:

MESSAGE FROM
THE BRANDEIS PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Shalom Brandeis Families,
Welcome to the 2015-2016 School Year!
Our vibrant Parents’ Association (PA) is comprised of dedicated parent and
grandparent volunteers and is a special part of your child’s experience at The
Brandeis School.
The PA volunteers proudly organize a variety of enriching events during the
school year that bring us together and benefit our children and school.
The PA functions because of each Brandeis family paying their annual PA dues
as well as PA fundraising activities throughout the school year.
Together with your volunteer service and annual PA dues, the PA contributes
to the school in many wonderful ways: A school-wide lunch program, a diverse
variety of school celebrations, Chesed opportunities, and tangible donations to
the school.
Most recently, the PA gifted the beautiful, new sign that adorns the front of the
school.
During the school year, the PA finances the Welcome Back Celebration,
implements the School Lunch Program, provides Rosh Hashanah baskets
and Mishloach Manot, and subsidizes class trips including the 8th grade trip
to Israel. The PA also provides the book fairs, Chanukah and Mother’s Day
Boutiques, as well as special hands-on workshops for the students such as The
Shofar Factory.
Your PA dues help fund special “Chagim” events such as Erev Shabbat Lunches,
the Chanukah Lunch, the Purim Carnival, the Passover Model Seder, and Yom
Ha’atzmaut and Lag B’Omer Celebrations.
The PA also recognizes our teachers and staff. On behalf of our families, the PA
distributes gifts to every staff member at Chanukah and at the end of the school
year. We also host a Teacher Appreciation Breakfast as well as a Recognition
Lunch for our teachers and staff. The PA purchases new books for the school
library and the teachers’ classroom libraries.
Volunteers are always needed throughout the calendar year – from working on
the school calendar and preparing the summer mailing to serving lunch on a
school day or a celebration of a Chag. Our volunteers exemplify the strong spirit
our families have for the school. Many volunteer opportunities exist for parents
who work both in and out of the home to fulfill the requirement of 50 annual
service hours.
Participating in the PA is a wonderful way to support and participate in your
child’s education at Brandeis while interacting socially with other parents and
staff.
We thank you for your support and look forward to volunteering with you in
2015-2016! Please email the Brandeis PA at [email protected] to learn
how you can become involved as well as check out our Facebook page for
current information: The Brandeis Parents’ Association.
Warmly,
Karen and Joe
