Plans for Austin Strong Benefit Underway-Strong for a Reason 23
Recently, the son of Toni Strong, an English teacher at Richwoods, was involved in a serious
car crash. There will be a benefit for the Strong family to help with medical bills.
Plans are currently underway for a benefit for Austin Strong. Austin is a Washington
Community High School senior who was involved in a car accident on January 22, 2014. After
several surgeries, Austin is now home and his recovery continues. Friends of the Strong family
are organizing a benefit to help with medical bills. The benefit will be held on Friday, May 23,
2014 at Countryside Banquet Facility in Washington. Save the date, as there will be something
for all ages. Tentative plans include a pasta dinner from 5-8 P.M., bucket drops, silent auction,
50/50 raffle, and live entertainment from 9-11 P.M. Tickets will be available for purchase at
the following businesses: Brunks, Hot Heads, Keps, Lindys, Russell’s,
TeamWorks, Washington Chamber of Commerce, Washington Community Bank, and
Washington Park District. A frisbee golf tournament will be held on Saturday, May 24. There
will also be a cut-a-thon at Hot Heads on Sunday, April 27 from Noon-4:00 P.M. Donations
can be made to the following: Benefit for Austin Strong, c/o: Washington Community Bank,
1895 Washington Road, Washington, IL, 61571. For more information, visit our Facebook
page at “Strong for a Reason”, or contact Jill McCaughey at (309)645-2144.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES
As the end of the school year approaches, it is time to think about summer activities for teens. Teens
sitting around the house for the summer are more likely to get involved in negative activities due to the
lack of structured time.
It isn’t too late to look for a summer job. If your teen isn’t able to find a summer job, there are plenty of
volunteer opportunities they can pursue. Teens can volunteer at an animal shelter, senior citizen center,
food bank, library, or organize a drive to collect back-to-school supplies for kids who can’t afford to buy
them for the next school year. Check out www.dosomething.org for more volunteer ideas.
What about grandparent, aunt, uncle or another relative that lives nearby? Do they need a hand with
some gardening, minor handy work, child care or housekeeping? This gives teens something positive to
do while strengthening family bonds.
Below is a list of some on-going positive activities that you may want to consider for your
student this summer:
Summer Band & Orchestra
Ages 8-18. Learn to play a variety of music, from jazz to country, while performing at a variety of
locations in central Illinois. Students are grouped by skill level; SeniorSummer Band is available for high
school students. Call 681-2861 (offered through the Peoria Park
District).
Illinois Central College's College for Kids
Illinois Central College has offered College for Kids as a summer staple. Enrollment begins April 18,
2011 at 8 A.M. It is offered twice during the summer, with Session I on June 13-23 and Session II going
from July 11-21. The Monday through Thursday classes cost $70.00. A wide range of classes are
offered, such as theater, drawing, chemistry, and much more. Please visit http://apps.icc.edu/cfk/
index.php for more information.
Bradley University's BU Kids
Bradley University offers BU Kids as a way to get middle school and high school-aged kids into the
swing of college. These classes are valuable tutoring lessons to help one's child succeed, and include
the following: Bradley's America Reads Tutoring Program, Jim Les Basketball Camp, Multicultural
Broadcasting Workshop, the Paula Buscher Basketball Camp, Reading Programs for Children and
Adults, Summer Forensics Institute, and World of Wonder. The courses have varying costs, with
America Reads being the least expensive and Summer Forensics Institute being the most expensive.
Please visit the links at www.bradley.edu/bukids /.
Peoria Park District Summer Activities
Peoria Park District is a great way to entertain and educate your kids over the summertime before
school starts again. A wide range of classes are offered that are going on all the time. These classes
range from yoga to teaching kids about wild animals to basketball and kick-boxing aerobics. These activities are always playing in Peoria in the regular schedule book. The courses generally have a $4.25
drop-in fee and are $45 for 12 visits. More information can be found at http://www.peoriaparks.org/.
Outdoor Fun
Get outside for some fresh air and sunshine at the Forest Park Nature Center (no website; 5809 Forest
Park Drive, Peoria; 309-686-3360). This nature preserve is situated along the Illinois River and covers
540 acres. Enjoy 7 miles of hiking trails, a natural history museum, a bird observation room, and an
assortment of programs throughout the year. Or, you could take your family for a day of fishing. At the
North Charter Oak Lake (no website; Orange Prairie Road, Peoria; 309-681-2900), you'll find a 6.4-acre
lake stocked with bass, sunfish, bluegill, carp and catfish, along with a paved trail and three fishing
piers. Fish for bluegill, sunfish, and bass in the small pond at the Sommer Park North (no website; 6600
N. Basket Oak Drive, Peoria; 309-681-2900). Your family can also enjoy the walking trails, basketball

COLLEGES VISITING RHS
Information on colleges visiting RHS is now available online. Students can
see which colleges and universities are visiting RHS by clicking on the
COUNSELOR CALENDAR. The link is located on the left side of the
“Guidance Office” page, which is located under “Programs and Services”
on the Richwoods’ website.
Attention Graduating Seniors and Parents: The guidance staff will be going to the senior
English classrooms on May 21, Wednesday, in order to help seniors fill out a final transcript
request. This final transcript request will be expected to be filled out by all seniors. If a senior is
not present on the 21st or doesn’t fill out a final transcript request, it is the student’s
responsibility to make sure that one does get filled out at a later time. The final transcript will
be sent to the designated college, university, or other institution of the students’ choosing. An
official transcript is required by all colleges and universities to complete the enrollment into that
school .This is an important document and seniors should be prepared to have a serious and final
destination in mind prior to May 21. Multiple copies will not be mailed out , rather, one final
transcript will be free of charge.
Reminder: The definition of “official” transcript is one that is sent directly from one institution
(Richwoods High School) to the another receiving institution (the college or university of your
choice). “Official means that it carries the signature from the school and it is sealed with the
school seal. If a student wishes a transcript to be mailed to their own personal address rather
than a post- secondary institution, the transcript cannot be “official”, as it will be in the hands of
the student or the student’s parent. These transcripts will not carry the school seal and will not
be signed, but instead will be marked “issued to student” and cannot be forwarded on by the
student or parent themselves at a later time, as colleges and post- secondary institutions
will not accept “unofficial” transcripts for the final transcript. Post- graduation, any
transcript requests will be handled by the school’s registrar and not the school
counselor.
