Volume 90 Issue 6 February, 2012 Luverne High School Luverne, Minnesota Senioritis By: Cheyenne Hemme Senioritis describes the decrease in motivation in the senior’s studies as they are coming closer to the end of their high school careers. Senioritis is likely to do more harm than good. The main symptom of senioritis is procrastination. Other symptoms include; lack of motivation, drop in grades, and another act called “coasting” which means going through classes with little or no concentration and also tardiness in the students. If you stay focused and buckle down, your opportunities to strengthen your skills and your experiences in college will be greater, and the students will be more likely to succeed. Another way to avoid senioritis is to stay involved in activities, sports and volunteer work all through high school. What do colleges expect? They expect students to maintain levels of academics. They see a midyear grade report and a final year ended transcript so there is no excuses for senior’s to be slacking off the last few months of high school. I interviewed Sara Goembel and Samantha Steensma about senioritis. First asking, “Are you experiencing senioritis?” Sara’s response, “Yes I am, I practically have been since 8th grade.” Sam’s response, “Yes I am experiencing senioritis because I don’t have any hard classes that stress me out.” Next asking, “What do you do to try to avoid it?” Sara said, “Not having daydreams about finally leaving high school.” Sam said, “Make sure you stay busy and attend school events like; games, dances, etc.” Last asking, “What are some ‘words of wisdom’ for the upcoming seniors?” Sara answered, “Don’t slack off during your junior year it will make senioritis worse because you will be saying, “It’s so slack I don’t even need to be here”. “Keeping up with your activities will really help,” Sam answered. “The more slack your classes are the chances of being bored are higher, so don’t be afraid to take the more ‘difficult’ classes, and make the most of your senior year because you won’t get it back.” Superbowl XLVI By: Sam Steensma Everyone knows that the Superbowl is one of the most important football games of the season. On February 5th, the New York Giants played the New England Patriots for Superbowl XLVI. The National anthem was sung by Kelly Clarkson. The game started with the coin toss, which was won by the Patriots. They decided to kick-off first. At the end of the first quarter, the Giants were up 9-0. Cruz had 2-yard touchdown reception from Manning, and Tynes’ kick was good. In the second quarter, the Patriots came back with a 29yard field goal by Gostkowski putting New England on the board with 3 points. Continuing in the second quarter, Woodhead cought got a 4-yard touchdown reception from Tom Brady, and Gostkowski’s kick was good. Finishing up the first half, New England was up 10-9. The half time show consisted of Madonna, LMFAO, M.I.A., Nicki Minaj, and Cee Lo Green. Not many people were as excited to watch the half time show this year, as they were in the past years. People like watching the more popular singers and groups perform because they will more than likely know the songs. Even though some of the popular singers were included with Madonna, not many people knew the songs she sang. The Patriots started off the third quarter strong, and prevented the Giants from scoring. Hernandez got 12-yard touchdown reception from Tom Brady, and Gostkowski’s kick was good. Putting the Patriots winning 17-9. The Giants were not going to give up, and came back with Tynes getting a 38-yard field goal putting the New York on the board with 12 points. With about 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Tynes made a 33-yard field goal. To finish up the third quarter, the Patriots were still up 17-15. The fourth quarter wasn’t as entertaining as the first three quarters. It came down to less than a minute left, and the Giants gave it to Bradshaw, giving the Giants a 6-yard touchdown run, and tried to run the ball, but the 2-point run failed, giving the Giants the win over the Patriots, 21-17. Overall, it turned out being a good game, but there were many upset Patriots fans. What is SOPA? By: Brandon Klein What is SOPA? SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act. It is the bill in the United States that tries to allow the U.S. law enforcement to stop online trafficking. This would give the U.S. the ability to block advertising networks from certain websites, and search engines from linking to other sites. With this new bill they could expand their laws so that illegal streaming of copyrighted material could penalize a person with a maximum of five years in prison. This could mean that downloading music illegally (like most people do), could end up with you getting in a lot of trouble. The goals of the bill were to stop the illegal use of copyrighted material and to protect the U.S. from counterfeit drugs. This bill could take away peoples freedom of speech and would violate the First Amendment. This would make a lot of people mad. President Obama said that he would not stand for taking away peoples freedom of expression. On January 18, 2012, there was the largest online protest in U.S. history. There were over 7,000 internet websites that planned a twelve hour block out of their internet website. The big websites that were part of this blackout included Google and Wikipedia. This changed the governments mind on the bill in a fast way. Only two days later on January 20, the government decided to postpone the bill. The government said, “We hope to find a solution for the ongoing problem in the near future.” Page 2 What’s up? Page 2 Black History Month By: Jonny Solma There are quite a few things that have happened in the past that have contributed to Black History Month. February is the month that it is celebrated in. There are plenty events that people do throughout the nation to celebrate this time during the year. Founded in 1909, the Nation Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was one of the earliest and most successful civil rights’ movements in the United States. Its mission was “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all people, and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.” The NAACP coordinated a bunch of challenges to state-sponsored segregation of public schools. Their effort led to the landmark case in 1954, Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which declared the slogan "separate but equal" to be unconstitutional. Another movement that the NAACP was involved in would be the March on Washington in 1963. This association came about two big movements for segregation in the United States, they would be the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Act. There are a number of people that have contributed to freedom of African Americans, Thurgood Marshall being one of them. Marshall played an important role on the basis of two major accomplishments. First off, he was the first African American judge to serve on the Supreme Court. Secondly, he was also part of the NAACP and part of all of their accomplishments that took place. Another person who played a huge role would be Martin Luther King, Jr. King was an American clergyman in Montgomery, Alabama. He followed the tactics of Mahatma Gandhi, meaning that he would solve problems by not using violence. Most people know MLK for his “I Have A Dream” speech that he delivered during the African American struggles. His other popular event would be the Montgomery Bus Boycott that he led. If you would like to learn more about Black History Month, feel free to look online in some of your spare time! St. Patricks Day By: Hailey Stulen Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated internationally on March 17th. It commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century, and has gradually become a secular celebration of Irish culture in general. The day is generally characterized by the attendance of church services, wearing green attire (especially shamrocks), and the lifting of Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol, which is often proscribed during the rest of the season. Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat. Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue! Over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick’s Day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day. Saint Patrick’s is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the Pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of day. In the 1798 rebellion, to make a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17th in hope of catching public attention. Little is known of Patrick’s early life, though it is known that he was born in Roman Britain in the 4th century, into a wealthy RomanoBritish family. His father and grandfather were deacons in the Church. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave. It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact locations is unknown. According to his confessions, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to be a priest. Saint Patrick’s feast day, as a kind of national day, was already being celebrated by the Irish in Europe in the ninth and tenth centuries. In later times he became more and more widely known as the patron of Ireland. The church calendar avoids the observance of saints’ feasts during certain days. Breaking World News By: Dylan Skattum The Manneken-Pis, a bronze statue of a young boy urinating that is a symbol of Brussels and a major tourist attraction, has had to stop peeing because of sub-zero temperatures gripping much of Europe. Officials turned off the flow of water through the statue, which has stood on a Brussels corner since the 1600s, out of concern the cold might damage its internal mechanism. Overnight temperatures in the Belgian capital have been in the teens, far below the average minimum for February, and the latest forecast projects that through at least Feb. 9. A Massachusetts woman says the FBI used a chain saw blade to cut through her door and held her at gunpoint for at least 30 minutes before agents realized they were conducting a raid at the wrong home. Judy Sanchez, of Fitchburg, says she awoke to heavy footsteps in the stairwell on Jan. 26 and walked into her kitchen in time to see a blade chop through her door. "I took two steps, face the second door, and I heard the click of a gun, and saying, ‘FBI, get down,’ so I laid down on my living room floor. I was screaming, ‘You have the wrong apartment, you have the wrong apartment,’ over fifty times. And then I seen the big blade coming down my door." She says she was held facedown on the floor at gunpoint while her 3-year-old daughter Ji’anni cried in another room. It turns out agents were after the other tenant on the floor of the multi-unit building who was suspected of dealing drugs. The raid was called Operation Red Wolf, a two-year investigation into drugs and weapons. Sanchez says she and her daughter now have trouble sleeping. The mom said she now sleeps with a baseball bat next to her bed. The FBI has apologized and is paying for the damage. Page 3 What’s Up? Page 3 Rick Santorum By: Jessie Vande Hoef A strange and rare event occurred in this small town on January 30th. Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum stopped at the Luverne Palace Theatre to win the favor of Rock County. Why Luverne? Recently Santorum has been traveling throughout Iowa and had won the Caucus of Lyon County, so they wanted to continue their travels in this area. Santorum’s foundation is about family, faith and freedom. The picture of “family” has been decreasing because of divorces and different household environments, which allows the government to have more control. If the home life isn’t healthy, then America is not healthy. Now that there aren’t as many father figures in homes, there are a lot more people in prison and more violence. He is all about keeping what our founding fathers gave to us. The United States has been one of the best countries in the world based on freedom, and we’re starting to forget that and give it up. This is our time to remember our God-given rights and change how we are doing things. Throughout time, the way we do things has evolved from what we ought to do, to what we want to do. The culture in America is slowly changing out from underneath us. Now, everybody focuses on the differences of the people instead of coming together and being equal. This is our moment to fix it. If we do not do something now, it will be too late. Santorum is working to become the country we used to be, and remind us who we should be. In the presidential campaign process, the candidates are involved in a caucus in every state. A caucus is a meeting of supporters or members of a political party or movement. They are mostly used in the United States and Canada. In the United States, the caucus is referred to as a meeting to coordinate member’s actions, choose group policy, or nominate candidates for various offices. Santorum has recently won the Caucus for Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, and Missouri. The result of the Iowa caucus was a .1% difference between Romney and Santorum. Romney has won one less caucus than Santorum, putting Santorum in the lead. Cinderellas Glass Slipper By: Katelyn Hart Lights, camera, action! Then she gets the privilege of meeting her very own fairy Godmother. Along the way, you will get to listen to the funny musical numbers that will have you laughing. It is a very funny play that you will not want to miss. The play will be going on March 29th, 30th, and 31st. So don’t forget to come and have a good laugh with the cast. You won’t regret the decision to come and see the twist the play has to give on “Cinderella”. This play will have you leaving still humming the songs that the cast sang. Hope you see you there! Tweet Tweet By: Lauren Christensen Twitter was created in March of 2006 by a man names Jack Dorsey, and was launched in July of that year. The original project codename was Twttr, inspired by the website Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. The team finally settled with the name “Twitter” which means “chirps from birds,” and also “a short burst of inconsequential information” which is exactly what Twitter is. Here is a short little timeline of Twitter user numbers: • In 2007, Twitter had 400,000 tweets posted per quarter. • In 2008 there were only 3 million registered users. • In 2008 there were only 1.25 million tweets per day. • January 2008 there were only 8 employees. • In 2009 twitter had 8 million registered users. • In 2011 there are now over 400 employees. 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day is how long it took to get from the first tweet to the billionth tweet. Now, it takes only a week to send over a billion tweets. When Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, there were 456 tweets per second (TPS) a record at that time. The current TPS record is 6,939 tweets per second, set 4 seconds after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Day. 572,000 was the highest number of new accounts created in a day, which was on March 12, 2011. 460,000 is the average number of new accounts per day created in February 2011. In March 2011, there were an estimated 225 million users. The first unassisted off-Earth Twitter message was posted from the International Space Station by NASA astronaut T. J. Creamer on January 22, 2010. I personally hated Twitter when I first got it. I had absolutely no idea how to do anything on it, and actually deleted it within the first two days of having it. After about a month I decided I was going to try it again, and I’m so glad I did. I go on Twitter a lot now, and tweet quite a bit, too. If you don’t already have twitter, I highly suggest getting it! Here is a list of the people I think are necessary to follow, and the description they have about themselves in their “BIO”: • Ghetto Hikes: I’m 28, I have a full-time job leading urban kids on nature hikes. I simply write down the things they say. • The 90s Life: Life was good, life was perfect. I wish I could relive #The90sLife! • 90s Girl Problems: Things we LOVE: Scrunchies, AIM, Saved By The Bell, VHS movies and the boys on Dream Phone. Call us on our landline! Page 4 Page 4 News To Know Shaun White By: Brady Dinger Did you see the X Games this past week? If not, Shaun White did something that made history and will be remembered for a long time. He was in two different events during these X Games. When the Slope style was about to start he decided to not participate because he had a left ankle sprain that kept him out of this competition. Shaun wanted to do this so that he could try and compete in his favorite event, which is snowboard super pipe. He has won this event four times in a row and wants to win it for the fifth time in a row. The competition was at night, so during that day Shaun was icing his ankle like crazy to make sure he was able to compete in the snowboard super pipe. Once the night came he decided that he was going to compete in his favorite competition. In his first one he was the last person to go and score 94 out of 100, which is really good and it put him in the lead for the competition. In this event you get three runs so there was plenty chances for the lead to get taken over by someone else. In the second runs for everybody nobody passed Shaun’s score, not even him. Going into the third event he was watched all of his competitors try and beat his score. One guy got close with 93 out of 100. As all of the competitors went, no one beat his score meaning Shaun White had a victory run to do for his last run. Most people would think he wouldn’t try all of his top tricks and be careful because he already had the competition won, but you have to remember that this is Shaun White, and he always goes for it all. During his last run, that’s exactly what he did. He threw in the awesome tricks that he always does and he did one trick that has never been done before. This trick was a front side double cork 1260, which no one besides him has ever landed. While he was waiting he was very excited on how he performed. What made him even happier was that he got 100 out of 100 for a score. This score has never ever been accomplished before Shaun White. Shaun White won his fifth consecutive snowboard super pipe competition and scored the first 100 ever, he will never forget the day he did all of that. NHL All-Star By: Chase Hoffman There are two interesting nights in the NHL when the all-star players come together, they play a game, and have competitions against each other. They are the best skilled players in the league, and highly trained athletes. The teams are drafted by two players for the teams; it is out of all the players in the NHL. Every year the team gets a captain and their last name is the team’s name. This year there was Team Chara and Team Alfredsson both amazing hockey players in the NHL. Starting off the weekend with the NHL all-star player’s hockey draft on Thursday, January 26th. They both got huge teams and great players. Through the whole NHL all-star rosters there was only one Minnesota Wild player, for team Alfredsson, Nick Johnson was the one Wild player and was also a rookie. Next there was the NHL all-star skills competition on Saturday, January 28th. This is includes events such as; 1.) NHL Fastest Skater - the winner was Carl Hagelin (Team Alfredsson) finishing with 13.218 2.) NHL Breakaway Challenge - the winner was Patrick Kane (Team Chara) finishing with 47% of the vote. 3.) NHL Accuracy Shooting - the winner was Jamie Benn (Team Chara) finishing with a total time of 10.204. 4.) NHL Skills Challenge Relay - the winner was (Team Alfredsson) with time of 2:08 5.) NHL Hardest Shot – the winner was Zdeno Chara (Team Chara) sets new record with 108.8 mph 6.) NHL Elimination Shoot Out – the winner was Steven Stamkos (Team Alfredsson) with 3-for-3 Lastly to end the All-Star weekend, on Sunday, January 29th the All-Star Game was taken place in Ottawa. The winner of that game was Team Chara, ending it 12-9 and Gaborik with a hatty. It was a very interesting weekend, and on the ice there was a ton of fun! I hope everyone watched it and enjoyed it all. Superbowl Commercials By: Thomas Graff People who don’t like watching football still tune into the Super Bowl mainly because the commercials are always hilarious and well made. This year personally I think that there were not as many funny commercials as other years. Still, I enjoyed the commercials quite a bit. One of the best commercials was the “Vampire Party”. This one is hilarious because the Twilight series is very popular right now. Plus, the Audi is pretty awesome, which makes the commercial even better! This Audi ad will put a smile on the face of any “Twilight” hater. Dog lovers had their day with several commercials featuring dogs. It would have ranked higher in my book if it was just the dog segment. The Star Wars segment at the end didn’t fit right. Some of the dog commercials were: “The Dog Strikes Back” and “Rescue Dog” and “Man’s Best Friend.” My favorite out of those three was “Man’s Best Friend” because the dog was bribing the man when usually it is the other way around. Dorito commercials are never a letdown. Bud light also has some great commercials like the other dog commercial, “Rescue Dog.” Another good commercial was “It’s Reinvented.” This was one of those commercials that were so ridiculously random, it was funny. Toyota balanced itself by doing a serious commercial but it wasn’t as memorable as this ad. My personal favorite improvement was to the DMV. Another good car commercial was “Transaction.” Seinfeld fans got a special treat. If you look closely, there were some clever, subtle, “Seinfeld” show references in there. It also didn’t hurt that the car looks gorgeous. The Leno cameo at the end was great. One last great car commercial was “A Dream Car. For Real Life” by Optimum. This commercial was awesome. Kia went straight to the ridiculous side of the humor spectrum to deliver a barrage of crazy images men daydream about. Please tell me I’m not the only guy who thinks about bull-riding a rhinoceros? I’m not sure if I’d dream about driving a Kia, but it did make me think the new Optima looks cool. Mission accomplished. Page 5 Page 5 News To Know The Life of a Manager By: Erin Fick When people go to a sporting event, most people focus on the players and the coaches. However, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work going on that is done by the managers. For almost every sport (except tennis) there are a couple of people helping to manage the team and make sure everything goes smoothly. Since we are still in the winter sports season, the Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Hockey, and Wrestling managers are the points of interest as of now. The Boys Basketball team’s managers are Jenni Fick and Erin Fick, with Trevor Teal doing video. The Boys team was lucky enough to get an iPad to help them take stats at games. This is an improvement over the pencil and paper of years past, as it is much easier and they can also take more accurate stats for the opposing team as well. Besides stats, there are some other responsibilities that fall under their manager responsibilities. Trevor Teal has to bring the video equipment to every game. At away games, they always bring cookies for the team. They also have to remind Mr. Rops to bring an extra jersey, since he tends to forget a lot of things. Girls Basketball is managed by Kristen Scheidt, Emily Robinson, and Maddie Stegenga. They also received an iPad for stats this year. Their duties are similar to Boys Basketball as they take stats on the iPad for the team. Kristen Scheidt said that her favorite part of being a manager was that she now can watch and understand what is going on in basketball. She also said that “I like to see how the players progress over the season”, which is a nice addition to the everyday manager tasks. Boys Hockey has Keegan Schoenfelder and Jeff Yen as managers. Girls Hockey is managed by Ashlinn Curtis. The two Boys Hockey team managers are a sort of tag team when it comes to responsibilities. They are in charge of filling the water bottles for the team and taking video of game. Jeff Yen said that they switch off between water and video. The Wrestling team has a ton of managers, with Ariel Reker at head manager and Lauren Guy taking video for the varsity team. For the JV team, Paige Baker takes stats, while Brenna Brown and Jada Hoven videotape the matches. Head manager Ariel Reker said that she has multiple responsibilities. Besides keeping track of the other four managers, she takes stats for the varsity matches. Also, if a wrestler were to pin their opponent in a match, Ariel gives them an actual pin to put on their jacket to measure their accomplishments. Peer Helping By: Katelyn Hart Peer Helping is an extracurricular activity that is based from the idea of getting kids to go out and get more involved more in the community. Peer Helping is offered to 11-12 graders, you can sign up as a 10th grader. The rules are that every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday we get together in Ms. Harms room for an informational meeting. She will post hours for movies, and activities that are outside the school for us to sign up and get our community hours, and tell us any news for the next week. How we get graded is by how many hours you get a quarter. If you have a study hall you have to get 65 hours a quarter and if you don’t have a study hall you have to get 40 hours a quarter. You have to have 3 community events. Those are activities that are not in school, like movies, or helping at a sporting event. You have to have at least 3 a quarter. If you have a study hall you get the opportunity to go to the elementary to work with the kids there. That is a really good way to your hours in. If you get more than the number of hours you need they will carry over to the next quarter. It is a good way to get ahead for the year. And during the summer you get the opportunity to get 100 hours. Then you can choose to split them evenly during the year. So 25 hours for every quarter. You get graded on how successfully you complete the hours. In your grade there are 3 officers. They are in charge of counting your hours. They are the people you go to if you have some questions. A fun thing about Peer Helping is that on occasion you get to have the lunch meetings. When we get those we get to have pizza in Ms. Harm’s room which is a lot of fun. Your hours are not hard to get in, all you do is have to get out and volunteer in the community. Peer Helping is a good way for you to get out in the community and get to know other people but it is a responsibility you have to make because you have to be at every meeting in the mornings. Peer Helping is a fun and easy way to get out and participate in the community. Page 6 Page 6 This And That Speech By: Erin Fick With February just beginning, it also marks the start of the Luverne Speech Team’s season. Coming off a season where three of the previous members advanced to the state tournament, Speech members are excited to start a new season that is even more successful than the last. With around 50+ members on the team, they are certain to win a lot of awards this year. The coaches for the Speech team are Mr. Benson and Mr. Folkestad. The Speech season lasts from the beginning of February through mid-April. Almost every Saturday in this time period, the team will go to a meet at another school. Each meet consists of three rounds. 5-7 speakers in the same category will all go to the same room and give their speech. A judge will rank the speakers, with a 1 being the best score and 5 being the worst. After a round is complete, speakers have a short break to prepare for their next round, where they are put up against 5-7 different speakers and judged again. All the judges scores are added up at the end and the speaker with the lowest score will get 1st place in that category. Most students at LHS are not that familiar with the competitive Speech world, as they have never been to a competition. There are two main subdivisions – public speaking events and interpretation events – and 13 different individual speaking categories between the two of them. Public speaking events are more formal and include Discussion, Extemporaneous Speaking, Great Speeches, Informative, and Original Oratory. Mr. Benson works with the speakers in this category. The speeches in public speaking events are all written by the speaker themselves. However, in Discussion the speakers bring research materials and work together to find a solution to a task, such as world hunger. Interpretation events can be described as more of a performance where the speaker is acting, and Mr. Folkestad helps with these students. It includes Creative Expression, Dramatic Duo, Dramatic Interpretation, Extemporaneous Reading, Humorous, Serious Poetry, Serious Prose, and Storytelling. These events usually involve the acting out of something already written, with the exception of Creative Expression that allows the speaker to write their own speech. Both Extemporaneous Reading and Storytelling involve the speaker to memorize stories out of a book and draw the choices of which ones they can perform at the competition. Speeches in all categories range from six to eight minutes in length. The Luverne Speech team had their first meet on February 4th at Worthington High School. Many of the new speakers went to watch, and the more experience speakers actually competed. Placing for Luverne was Londyn Robinson with 2nd place in Discussion, Nathan Stensland-Bos with 5th in Great Speeches, and Erin Fick with 5th in Informative. As this was just the first meet, Speech team members are still looking forward to more people placing and improving throughout the season. Page 7 Senior Ideas Page 7 Graduation Party Must Have”s By: Devin Heitkamp All seniors have to eventually plan out what they want at their graduation parties as far as cake, food, baby pictures and pictures throughout high school, decorations, and planning the guest list. The first thing that mother’s usually ask their children when they talk about their party is more than likely going to be what they want for food, and what they want their cake to be. No graduation party is complete without having a cake. Usually this is a grocery store sheet cake with an edible photo on it, which is typically a senior picture of the graduating senior, but regardless, it is still delicious. The only thing that guys care about out of their entire graduation party is what kind of food they are going to have. Even if your favorite food is spaghetti, that’s hard for your guests to eat, and people go to many graduations per day, and they get full easily. The easiest food to have at your party is sandwiches and snack type food. Most moms usually hate to even think of their “baby” graduating. Usually looking through the baby pictures, will make your mom shed some tears, and make them realize how fast you’ve grown up. There’s no better excuse for mom to show off embarrassing photos of you than at your graduation focusing on your achievements prior to turning 18. By the time everyone leaves the party, everyone will know what the graduate looked like at their first, third, and fifth birthday. Most seniors usually have an iMovie of all their pictures as a baby, moving all the way up to them being a senior. Decorations aren’t too bad to go buy because you can just buy anything red and white to go along with our school colors. But some seniors decide to not use those colors and pick their favorite colors instead. When you set up your decorations, make sure that it is easy for all of your guests to see what you have set out to look at. You should invite all of your friends and family to your graduation party. Most people have a guestbook or some other item for people to sign like the graduates favorite book as a child, so they know who all came to their party. From the guestbook, the graduates send “thank you” cards to all of the people that signed the guestbook. Crazy Scholarships By: Baillie Williams Most of us seniors have our college picked out, and know what we are going to do with our lives. The scary part is how the heck we are going to pay for it! Every year college gets more expensive and harder for us to pay. One way to get us through it is scholarships. Some people don’t even try applying for them because they think they are not smart enough, and don’t stand a chance. Luckily there are crazy scholarships that do not require much knowledge. One of the ridiculous scholarships is the Michigan Llama Association Scholarship. If your parents are members of the Michigan Llama Association, you can apply for a $500 scholarship, which you can renew up to three times. In the club you can adopt llamas, show them, and help out the llama community. So in other words if you have an obsession with llamas and want to join a club you can win some money for college. Another crazy scholarship is the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest. To be eligible for this scholarship you have to be a senior, and have a kick-butt duck call. The first place for this scholarship can win $1,500. The second place gets $500, and a couple of third place winners get $300 towards college. All you have to do is send a video of your best duck call to the website, and they choose the winners. If you are a good cook, and want to win some money this would be the best scholarship for you. It is called the All-American Apple Pie Recipe Contest. All you have to do for this scholarship is to make your best pie, and hopefully it’s good enough to win it. The winner of the contest gets $25,000 to put towards their college tuition. Do you love duct tape? If so, you could make a dress out of it for prom and win a scholarship. To enter the contest you have to be at least 14 years old, and must be a legal resident of the United States or Canada. The contest starts on March 7 and goes until June 13. The rules are that each couple must attend a high school, and both of their prom attire must be completely made of duct tape. The prom attire must be a completely original design, and may not be copyrighted. To submit your design you can send a picture of you and your date at prom with your creation on to www.stuckatprom.com . The first place winner will win a cash prize of $5,000 for college. Additionally six honorable mentioned winners will get a prize of $3,000. The categories that the third place winners can win in are: best purse, best corsage, best shoes, best tie, and best jewelry. These were just a few of the tons of crazy scholarships. If you want to try any of these they are all online. Page 10 Page 10 Boys Hockey Sports By: Jonny Solma The Luverne Cardinal Hockey team is down to three games left in the season, and they are having a great season so far! After tying Morris/Benson on Saturday January 28th, the Cardinals were in a predicament for the Southwest Conference race. Having split the head to head competition with Marshall, if Marshall ended up beating Morris/Benson on Tuesday January 31, Marshall would take the conference. Having tied Morris/Benson, Luverne only got one point for the tie (a win receives two), that put them to 17 points in the conference. Marshall ended up beating Morris/Benson 6-3, so that put Marshall at the top of the Southwest Conference with 18 points. Although the Cardinals didn’t win the conference, their goal of at least reaching the Section Semi-Finals at Gustavus still remains strong! Luverne is also looking at getting a home section game for the Quarter-Final. At the section meeting for the coaches, the Cardinals will hopefully be looking at any seed of 5th or better. On Friday January 13th, Luverne traveled up North to play against Mora/ Hinckley-Finlayson. After a long bus ride, the Cardinals came out and only scored one goal by Jackson Frankenhoff, but after a period the score was 1-0 in favor of Luverne. The second period wasn’t much different, only getting one goal from Skyler Wenninger. The third period was a little bit different, getting goals from Cody Christensen, Gunnar Olson, Skyler Wenninger, and Logan Norman. Mora also got one goal so the score at the end of this one was 6-1 in favor of Luverne. Getting off a five hour bus ride, it was a good win for the Cardinals. The next game for Luverne would be against the Princeton Tigers, which is where Coach Derrick Brown was originally from. The Cardinals beat the Tigers last year when they traveled down to Luverne and they were pretty upset about that. Knowing that Princeton wanted revenge the Cardinals knew that they needed to come out with a lot of intensity. After one period the game was pretty evenly matched, the score was 0-0. The Cardinals came out in the second period and they scored a power play goal, from Skyler Wenninger, making the score 1-0 in favor of Luverne. Princeton had a quick answer for that one, making the score 1-1. The rest of the game was even, nobody scored for the rest of the game, even in overtime! The team wanted to win that game for Coach Brown, but they just couldn’t get it. However, they would take a tie. Playing the Cougars from Mankato East next, the first period was all Luverne. The Cardinals would get goals from Cody Christensen, Logan Norman, and Skyler Wenninger, making the score 3-0. The Cougars came out early in the second period and scored right away, making the score 3-1. Cody Christensen for Luverne answered after that by scoring a goal for himself, making the score 4-1 at the end of the second. The Cardinals would add two more goals in the third period and Mankato East added a goal for themselves, making the final score 6-2 in favor of Luverne. ] Next on Luverne’s schedule would be the Redwood Valley Cardinals. Luverne won the first meeting of these two this year, 7-4. This game was just a very sloppy game for Luverne, after one period the score was 2-2, getting two goals from Jordan Dingmann. Throughout the rest of the game, Luverne only added two more goals. One goal from Skyler Wenninger and Jonny Solma, making the score 4-2, in favor of Luverne. The next game for the Cardinals would be against the Trojans from Worthington. Luverne started off slow and just had a pretty sloppy entire game, but they went on to win 5-1. They would get goals from Cody Christensen, Austin Maxwell, Logan Norman, Dylan Skattum, and Chase Hoffman. Luverne Hockey played Morris/Benson next, and this game would end up being the reason that Luverne didn’t split the Southwest Conference with their rival, Marshall. The Cardinals started off slow, being behind 1-0 after two periods. Luverne came out in the third period scoring two quick goals from Logan Norman and Skyler Wenninger. That would put them with a lead of 2-1. They would give up that momentum though when Morris/Benson would score two quick goals to make the score 3-2. Logan Norman would score a goal with three minutes left in the game to make the score at a 3-3 tie, we would be heading into overtime! Throughout the overtime, both of the teams had their chances, but nobody could capitalize, leaving the game at a 3-3 tie. This would come back to haunt the Cardinals, knowing that they would end up losing the conference by one point, just because they didn’t win that game. But at the time, they didn’t know that it would end up this way. The Cardinals came out and dominated the Windom Eagles 8-1. They would get goals from Travis Frakes, Cody Christensen, Jonny Solma (2), Austin Maxwell, Dylan Skattum, Jordan Dingmann, and Skyler Wenninger. The Cardinals had a tough loss in the Windom game, losing Senior Captain Cody Christensen to a concussion. The Cardinals would travel up to Dodge County; they started off slow, and just ended up not having that great of a game for themselves. They would go on to win the game 5-2, getting goals from Travis Frakes (2), Jonny Solma, and Jackson Frankenhoff (2). Boys Basketball By: Thomas Graff and Devin Heitkamp Our Luverne basketball team has had a very good first half of the season. Right now they have a total of 12 wins and only 6 losses. Which is, according to Coach Rops, the goal for their team. The most recent game was on February 1st. Where they played Pipestone by a close heart breaker of only 4 points, the ending score was 63 to 59 with pipestone winning. Devin Heitkamp led the team in points with a crazy amount of 27. He also made a total of 7 three-pointers and had 3 steals. Brett Heronimus had 14 points with 6 assists. Arends had 5 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds. Slieter had 6 points and 5 rebounds. Coach Rops had a couple things to say about his team’s success. He said, “Many of the boys have stepped up since the injury to Brandon Klein.” He says that they struggle with teams that have size, but he likes to play zone on those teams so they have to shoot outside and also they press the team to make them tired and turn the ball over. There offensive philosophy has been going inside and then kicking back out, they do this because they have success in shooting the three-pointer. This philosophy allows players like Devin Heitkamp to make 7 three’s in one game! He says “The highlight of the year was their win over Marshall Tigers, which they have not done since 1999.” The Cardinals beat the Tigers, 75 to 73. Brett Heronimus led the team with 24 points. He also went to the line a total of 21 times! Brett also took the most rebounds of the team with a total of 18! Weis added to the score with 15 points and helped with 5 rebounds. Slieter had 14 points with 9 rebounds and Heitkamp had 10 points with 3 steals. The total team shot 41% of their field goals. They also shot 62% from the free throw line. The game went into overtime because they were tied at 65 at the end of regulation. Luverne scored 10 points and held Marshall to only 8 points, which gave them the lead to win the game. The team has a hard upcoming schedule against Worthington, Fairmont, Windom, and Redwood. Worthington, Fairmont, and Redwood are the toughest teams that they have in their section. The team wants to at least get a 3 or 4 seed so that they can host one home playoff game. So go out and support the basketball team! By: Brady Dinger Wrestling The wrestling team is having has been improving during this season. They have a hard time filling all of their weight classes so they have to forfeit some of their matches which makes it hard to pick up wins. They have been working really hard and they will keep that up to hopefully do well come playoff time. The wrestling team participated in a tournament in Parker, SD. Their first matches were against a tough team which was Adrian. Adrian always has a tough wrestling team and they won 57 to 17. During these matches, Cody Hess was able to pick up a win against his opponent 9 to 4. Spencer Oeltjenbruns also got a win and he won by a tech fault which means that he was up by 15 or more points at one time so that match is over. One of the veterans on the team Wyatt Aubert won his match 3 to 1 and it was a good match. The last player that got a win in these matches was DJ Reker and he won with a pin. As you can see, even though they lost the overrall match they had a lot of individual accomplishments that they achieved. Their next match was against Fairmont. In a lot of tough matches Luverne ended up losing to Fairmont 51 to 26. During these matches five Luverne wrestlers picked up wins to help the team almost pick up a victory. One of them was Will Natte who won easily with a forfeit because the other team didn’t have a person for that weight class. The next wrestler that won was Eli Dooyema and he won by pinning his opponent. Another member that picked up a win was Zach Gillette who also won by pinning his opponent. Spencer Oeltjenbruns won his match 13-3 and had a really good match. The last member of the team that won was Wyatt Aubert, which he won by a tech fault and like I said before since he was up by 15 points or more the match was automatically over. The Luverne wrestlers put up a good fight during all of their match ups. The wrestling team has been working really hard to pick up wins and they are looking forward to the playoffs to see how well they will do during those matches. Page 11 Gymnastics Page 11 Sports By: Kaitlin Van Meetern Girls Hockey By: Cheyenne Hemme Like all Luverne High School winter sports, the Gymnastics season is coming to an end. They have one meet left in Windom, and then it is time for Sections, which is being hosted by the Worthington Trojans. When I think about the season they have had, the first two things that come to my mind are improvement and potential. This season of gymnastics was full of it. At the beginning of the season back in December their average score was 112. A month and a half later the Luverne gymnast’s average score is 122. A 10 point improvement for any team of gymnasts is huge. Their record with just one regular season meet left is 5-10 with them beating Redwood Valley, St. James, West Central and Marshall. When I talked to Senior Captain Melanie Van Meeteren, she said that the teams’ goal is to at least place in the top half of the sections. She has also said that, “everyone has improved tremendously” and that “practice has always been something to look forward to because all of the girls have so much potential and are always having fun”. When asked about the coaches she stated that “Without our coaches we would be nowhere, their always there for us even on our bad days.” The Girl’s Hockey team this year is the Southwest Conference champs. They won three on-the-road games against Worthington, Long Prairie, and Benson. They captured the conference for the first time since 2004-2005. Playing Benson, they won 9 to 2. Lauren Christensen, Ellen Dahl, and Mace Walgrave made two goals each to get them ahead. In the first period Sterrett and Christensen scored one goal each in the last five minutes. The second period they scored four times keeping a 6 to 0 lead. Then in the third period Dahl and Walgrave made it an 8-0 lead. Then letting Benson score twice, Christensen scored within the last 12 seconds of the game. Kennedy Gonnerman never let a shot into the net in the first two periods, and during the third period Jessica Calvin saved four of six shots. Christensen, Pierce, Walgrave, Sterrett and Anderssen added one assist each, while Katie Eeten and Madisyn Dingmann had two assists each. Playing Long Prairie-Grey Eagle-Wadena-Deer Creek, Christensen had an awesome night, getting a hat trick and also three assists. The score was tied 2 to 2 with a little more than 4 minutes left in the first period when Christensen scored. Luverne had a power play goal during the second period by Dahl, making it a 6 to 2 lead. Christensen got her hat trick during the third period with a little over nine minutes left. Overall shots that night were 36 for Luverne and 20 for LP-GE-W-DC. Luverne won against Worthington 6 to 3. Right away in the first period the Cardinals got a five goal run. Christensen scoring twice, Sterrett scoring once, and Anderssen had one also making it a 4 to 0 lead. Letting Worthington have one goal, but Reisdorfer came back with a goal of her own, making it a 5 to 1 lead. Christensen getting another hat trick during the second period making it a 6 to 1 lead. Then in the late second period the Cardinals let two more goals in making it a final score of 6 to 3. Dingmann had three assists, along with Sterrett having two and Dahl, Sommers, and Oye each having one assist. Winter Scoreboard By: Brandon Klein By: Sam Steensma Girls Basketball The Girls’ Basketball record as of now is 8-12. They have had some good games within the last month. They have also had some ups and downs, and they went through a little bit of a rocky area. They racked up a few losses, but they are coming back with some impressive wins and very close games. After they had a very good game against Redwood Valley, they played Central Lyon, and only lost by ten points. The following week they put up two wins against Southwest Star Concept and Windom; the girls’ beat Southwest Star Concept 69-42. Windom put up a good fight against our girls, but we pulled through with a win in overtime, winning 51-45. The next two weeks, were the rocky part of the season and recorded a couple losses. Their losses were very close games; they played MCW, Worthington, JCC and Pipestone. Once they came back with a new start after having few losses under their belt, the girls had two impressive games to pull off some wins. The next two games they played consisted of the girls playing St. James and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. On Saturday, the 28th of January, the girls played St. James, beating them 55-40. With the girls being pumped up and ready for the next game, they came back on Monday the 30th, ready to play. The girls played Tracy that night, and ended up winning with seconds left, giving the ball to Megan Petersen, who put it up and got the game winning shot to make the score 45-44; leaving the girls getting another W for their record.
