It is also a program with immediate, lasting and effective benefits for you, your family and friends, the local economy, and our village. You may think of a certain NBC show or conjure an idea of fun and games when you think of parks and recreation. It’s a common misconception, but parks and recreation is more than that. You entrust us with the care of your children and we value that trust. We develop their life-long motor skills as toddlers and young people by organizing programs specifically with instruction and coaching developed for their age groups. We also help you become and stay fit, and build programs to promote family unity. We also expand your skills and knowledge, increase your self-esteem, and reduce your stress. In short, we make you feel great! Our park and recreational facilities are point of pride for the Glencoe community. They add quality to our environment, they maintain the value of our homes, they bring in tourism dollars to local businesses, and we keep the air and water clean by preserving open spaces. For example, picnickers buy charcoal, food, and coolers. Other park patrons purchase shoes and sporting equipment to engage in physical activities in our facilities, such as playing tennis or walking on our multi-use paths. Through participation in organized activities, we provide the opportunity for social interaction, promote sensitivity to cultural diversity, eliminate loneliness, create memories for your later reflection, and provide you with space to have fun, relax, and enjoy life. The benefits of parks and recreation span every age and demographic of this country and affect society at both an individual level and as a whole. With the rise of internet and social media usage, there are a lot of people (young and old) who are spending large amounts of their free-time in front of a computer screen. Promoting the benefits of unplugging from this trending pastime will be crucial as the need of park and recreation agencies evolve. We must continue to connect with all users by making recreation fun and engaging to all. Park and recreation programs are a means to providing families with opportunities to spend important quality time together. They contribute to a proactive way for adults to better their health, prevent debilitating illness, and increase individual life spans. They provide youth with a social outlet. Most importantly, park and recreation agencies are inexpensive and convenient for everyone in the community. A key to increasing the exposure of youth in recreation activities is to have active and encouraging adult role models. It makes sense that kids growing up in households with active adults are likely to adopt an active lifestyle too. Parents must take the opportunity to seek out activities that can be shared with their child, or with the whole family. “Direct a child to exercise and few will respond with enthusiasm – if they respond at all. But issue an invitation to join the fun, and most will accept eagerly.” There are countless ways to enjoy recreation with a child, starting from toddler through the teen years. Glencoe Park District offers activities for all ages and levels, during hours convenient for everyone, even the working person. These activities range in price, but are comparable to taking the family to the movies, or out to lunch, and the benefits of enjoying recreation as a family are immeasurable. Ancillary benefits include exercise and improvement to their general health. This fall, the Glencoe Park District will be focusing on ways to Unplug and Play. We invite you to join us for classes, special events and programs designed to celebrate recreation. Sincerely, Lisa CPRP Li isa Sheppard, CP Executive Director GUIDE TO SYMBOLS GLENCOE PARK DISTRICT BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Steve H. Gaines, President Dudley Onderdunk Vice President Lisa M. We serve families with children 6 weeks old up to kindergarten. A day at Children’s Circle reflects our philosophy that children learn best through meaningful interactions with the world around them in a secure environment. Learning is an active process, whether it happens during a teacher-guided group experience or during free choice play. Our program is licensed by the State of Illinois, meeting state standards for health, safety, and staff training. NOW ACCEPTING INFANTS! 6 WEEKS-KINDERGARTENGLENCOE BEACH CHILDREN’S CIRCLE FULL DAY PRESCHOOL 10 Children’s Circle Full Day Preschool opens at 7 AM and closes at 6:30 PM, with enrollment options that range from two to five days per week. Children’s Circle is closed for one week in August and one week in December, as well as on major holidays. NEW! INFANTS JR. PRESCHOOL Our Infant teachers understand that this first school experience for your child lays the groundwork for healthy social and educational growth in the years to come. With an emphasis on building trustworthy, loving relationships, our program focuses on individual needs and enjoying new experiences in a warm environment. Our Jr. Preschool teachers keep kids active with weekly learning themes that spark imagination and promote investigation. Language, math and science learning is embedded in routines and play, with large and small group experiences providing support for developing concepts and understandings. TODDLERS Our Toddler teachers serve as guides as children learn about themselves, their friends, and the world around them. The drive for independence that characterizes this age group spurs impressive language, social, cognitive and physical gains. We focus heavily on new and sometimes messy experiences whether it be painting with pudding or playing with soil in the sensory table. PRESCHOOL In the Preschool classroom, learning is rapid and engaging as we prepare for the kindergarten year to come. Curriculum is strong and embedded; numbers become real through counting games and routines; letters draw life from songs, storytelling, rhyming, and situational experiences. Cooking is science and socialization, as the fruits of children’s efforts are enjoyed together. Use of social stories promotes deep imaginative play, cooperation, and cognition. Learning is interactive, with plenty of opportunities for your child to explore and follow his interests. FULL DAY PRESCHOOL 2016-17 MONTHLY RATES EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1, 2016 THROUGH AUGUST 31, 2017 A separate $125 non-refundable, non-transferable registration fee is required for each child. Our goal for children is not just school-readiness, but life-readiness. We are proud to be licensed by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and to follow the Illinois Early Learning Standards. The standards were developed with the support of hundreds of Early Childhood educators in order to provide developmentally appropriate benchmarks. Our Early Learning Center teachers use this resource to guide classroom experiences and activities, providing a solid foundation for developmental and experiential learning. VISIT OUR WEBSITE www.GlencoeELC.com OUR EDUCATIONAL TEAM We pride ourselves on our ties to the community; some of our teachers have been with Glencoe Park District preschools for more than twenty-five years! The key component in accomplishing our mission is choosing individuals that can easily blend in with our Early Learning Center family. Our educators have academic degrees in Child Development, Early Childhood or a related discipline, and life experiences that encompass parenting and grandparenting. The ELC staff receives continuous development, support and training in and out of the classroom. All staff completes fifteen hours of continuing education each year to understand the latest trends in early childhood education and child development. The broad depth of knowledge enables the Early Learning Center to provide an exceptional preschool experience and allows your child to trust, respect and bond with their teachers, in addition to meeting our high standards of education and experience. OUR PHILOSOPHY AND CURRICULUM The Early Learning Center philosophy is that children learn best through meaningful interactions with the world around them in a secure environment. Learning is an active process, whether it happens during a teacher-guided group experience or during free choice play. We emphasize cognitive, social, emotional and large and small motor development through our play-based curriculum. We enrich the day with songs and rhymes, stories and conversation, and build vocabulary as we splash in the media table, experiment with paint, and try out new roles in the housekeeping area. Learning is natural and easy, with lots of choices and opportunities to explore. 3YEAROLD PRESCHOOL TEACHERS: NATALIE DAVERMAN, JACKIE KOZELKA, PAT BOUDREAUX Teachers show the way by providing social models and support as children begin to negotiate and problem-solve. Special units bring learning to everyday experiences; a class trip to the grocery store sparks a host of new understandings about classifying, color, and nutrition, and sets the stage for imagination. Learning in the 3’s room follows a developmental model; children learn through real, hands-on experiences, using their curiosity to drive discovery. AM TEACHERS: BOBBIE SHORE, KATHY KRAEMER PM TEACHERS: JACKIE KOZELKA In our 4-year-old class, learning is rapid and engaging as we prepare for the kindergarten year to come. Curriculum is strong and embedded; numbers become real through counting games and routines; letters draw life from songs, storytelling, rhyming, and a host of situational experiences. Cooking is science and socialization, as the fruits of children’s efforts are enjoyed together. Use of social stories promotes deep imaginative play, cooperation, and cognition. Learning is interactive, with plenty of opportunities for children to explore and follow their interests. ADVENTURES IN LEARNING FOR 3’S AND 4’S Add enrichments to your afternoon. This class piggybacks onto the ELC 3 & 4 year old AM classes. Your child remains with classmates to enjoy engaging activates led by trained staff. Adventures in Learning is for ELC students only. KINDERGARTEN Since 1942, Glencoe Junior Kindergarten (GJK) has been a nurturing, vibrant preschool that is recognized for exceeding standards set forth by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). GJK is a warm and welcoming school full of active children and supported by a collaborative community of families, teachers and staff. Through loving, caring interactions and a play-based curriculum focused on all areas of development, we work with children to prepare them for kindergarten and the world. WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN AT GJK? Our goal for every child is that they have self-confidence and a love for life-long learning. We use the NAEYC Standards, the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards, and the Common Core State Standards to guide our curriculum. We design our program so that children inquire, hypothesize, explore, interact, engage and persevere. OUR PHILOSOPHY AND CURRICULUM CREATING CONNECTIONS GJK follows an emergent curriculum, which means that the ideas stem from the children. Through careful observation and rich conversations, the children help to decide what topics will be covered. When children are interested and vested in a topic, they are eager to learn. Once a topic has been decided, our teachers look at the individual goals that we have set with each family and ensure that the classroom activities provide opportunities for growth. GJK values and promotes a sense of community between school and our families. We work in union with families to enrich the lives of our children. Parents and caregivers have the opportunity to become involved with the school in a variety of ways based on their interest. • Home visits to enhance the family/home connection • Annually, three parent teacher conferences • Dedicated classroom technology for curriculum enhancement and parent communication • Parent Education opportunities throughout the year • Family events like: ice cream socials, barbecues and Mom’s/Dad’s night out. • Drop off designed to allow time for parents to interact with one another and with the teachers. • Family Resource library, access to community seminars, and support from both the Director and Assistant Director are available to all of our families. Raising children can have its challenges and we are here to support that effort. INDIVIDUALIZED EXPERIENCES We believe that each child is unique. Through meetings with our parents, student observations, and implementation of age-appropriate assessment tools, we learn the strengths of our students. It is this information that guides our daily practices. Parent-teacher conferences are held three times a year and each child has an individual portfolio assessment demonstrating progress throughout the year. GLENCOE AGES 2-5 BEACH LITERACY COORDINATOR 14 Research shows that a love for reading starts early. Our literacy coordinator works with small groups of children to strengthen their understanding of books and create a strong foundation. Children are learning to reflect on a story, compare and contrast different types of books, share key details of a text, identify characters, settings and much more. Children feel empowered as learners! LUNCH BUNCH 2S Extend the two-year-old day by having lunch with GJK friends and the two-year-old teachers. (11:15 AM-12 PM) ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS 3S & 4S GJK offers enrichment programs for our three and four year olds. NSSRA has over 600 recreation, sport, cultural, social, and leisure offerings available throughout the year, creating new experiences, opportunities for skill development, leisure time, and perhaps most importantly, friendship. Racquets are sized for small hands, and the courts are smaller and easier to cover so instead of waiting in line, kids can spend their time playing. Balls are lower in compression; they bounce lower and don’t move as fast so they are easier to hit. This allows kids time to get to the ball and helps them develop optimal swing patterns. All that equals more fun and less frustration! MIGHTY MITES: The main focus is learning the primary stages of athletic skills such as movement, balance and hand-eye coordination. The Dojo strives to create a challenging, yet nurturing approach to training in the martial arts. The program is inclusive, and does not necessitate any background in the martial arts, nor is it relevant to the physical qualities that any individual brings to the program. The Glencoe Park District, together with Pride Dojo, offers classes to students age four and older. All students enroll as beginners, and as they attain physical, mental, and spiritual growth, they progress through different belt levels. Students interested in learning the positive aspects of the art of Japanese Shotokan Karate are welcome. PREKARATE Students learn how to follow instruction, develop balance, coordination, strength, and concentration through appropriate game playing. They are taught listening skills and gain self-confidence through creative activities, while engaging in a fun and exciting environment. YOUTH KARATE GLENCOE BEACH Students improve coordination, power of concentration, and balance while learning kata and sparring actions. They experience continued growth in self-esteem and confidence as students broaden their abilities and knowledge of the martial art. The skills obtained in this class help enhance your child’s abilities in school, sports, and other outside activities. ADULT KARATE Training in karate offers many benefits to becoming a whole individual. Self-defense skills, physical fitness, mental as well as physical challenges, and a connection to others in this age group are principal goals at this level. Karate training is an excellent means to keeping your mind-body connection and keeping multi-tasking skills sharp and focused. It releases tension, improves balance and agility, and improves both health of mind and body. This class is designed for any age and any level of physical fitness. KOBUDO CLASS This is for students that have a rank of yellow belt or higher. Kobudo means weapons in Japanese. We work mainly with the bo staff, which is a long wooden staff. In this class students are taught Katas with the bo. Katas are a series of movements with attacks and counters against imaginary opponents. This class prepares students who are interested in competing in tournaments in the kobudo division. The bos are provided in class. BEGINNING SPARRING This class is for students that have a rank of yellow belt or higher. Sparring is a controlled fight with safety equipment. Students learn how to block and counter with a partner. The class teaches offensive and defensive techniques. Students start to learn footwork and how to hit targets. The class prepares them to participate in tournaments if they choose. Students enrolled in the class are required to purchase safety equipment. BATTLEFIELD No video games compares to Pride Battlefield, because this class places your child right in the middle of a battle where the fun and life lessons just keep coming. Your child will be challenged physically and mentally to become the very best he or she can be. Each action-packed class will include information on Japanese Samurai weapons and codes of honor, as well as leadership and strategy. Each child will learn the basics of swordsmanship, including how to identify when to lead, when to follow, and when to get out of the way! Kids will participate in mock battles using foam swords and other Samurai weapons that are fun, safe, and extremely cool! REALTIME REGISTRATION When you see a program or special event that interests you, sign up! Many of our programs are very popular, and waiting until the last minute may result in a full class, insufficient enrollment, or class cancellations. Registration is handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Online registration is the BEST way to ensure a spot. It is also the fastest and most convenient way to register. Participants who register and submit their payment online will know right away whether or not they are enrolled in a program, via an email confirmation. You must complete your transaction all the way through; a class in your cart doesn’t ensure registration. You may still register in-person, by mail, or by fax, but online is more efficient. If you have any questions, please call us at (847) 835-3030. Note: Registration forms received after 5PM will be processed on the next business day. HOW TO REGISTER Registration is accepted online at www.glencoeparkdistrict.com as well as in-person, by mail, or by fax (unless otherwise indicated in the description). To fill out a paper registration form, visit our facilities or download a form at www.glencoeparkdistrict.com (Registration). To register for a program, be prepared to provide the following: participant birth date, emergency contact information, activity information, payment information, and a waiver/release signature. Incomplete forms will be returned. Payment can be submitted in the form of cash (in-person only), checks (made payable to the Glencoe Park District), or by Visa or MasterCard. CREATING A HOUSEHOLD ACCOUNT 48 HOW TO REGISTER In order to register for programs, you MUST first create a household account either online or in-person, i.e., if you do not already have one. To create a household account, and/or register online, click on the Register Now registration link at: www.glencoeparkdistrict.com. Activation of a new account will take one (1) business day; you will receive an email confirmation. Since all future registration confirmations will be sent via email, please be sure that your current email address is always on file with us. UNAVAILABLE CLASSES CHANGES TO A HOUSEHOLD ACCOUNT Please inform the registration office when there are two separate households and/or for any other household changes that need to be done, whether the change needs to be done prior to the day of registration, or on the actual day of registration itself. In order to avoid unnecessary cancellations, please sign up for your program early. If you or a family member has a disability and are interested in participating in or attending Glencoe Park District services, programs, or activities, the District will make reasonable accommodations such as changing rules, policies, and practices; removing barriers to participation; or providing auxiliary aids or services to ensure you are given an opportunity to participate. If you require publications or other materials of the District in a special format (Braille, audio cassette, or large print), please advise our office. To assist the Glencoe Park District staff in making these accommodations, we urge you to call prior to your involvement and discuss the necessary accommodations with our staff. If you have questions regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act, call us at (847) 835-3030. PARTICIPANTS WITH ALLERGIES Participants with allergies, such as bee stings, peanut products, dairy, etc., may be at risk of a serious allergic reaction while participating in a Park District program due to contact with or ingestion of the allergen. The Glencoe Park District cannot guarantee an allergen free environment, but with your cooperation we can create safer surroundings and be better prepared to handle emergencies. The Park District will make reasonable, feasible, and practical accommodations to allow participants with life-threatening allergies to participate in our programs. Glencoe Park District requests participants, parent(s) and/or guardian(s), complete and submit a Food Allergy Action Plan, and other required forms, a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the participant’s first day of attendance, to allow time for accommodations and to train appropriate staff. Forms may be obtained at the Takiff Center main registration desk. PETS IN THE PARK AND AT GLENCOE BEACH Pet owners are encouraged to be courteous to others by abiding by the Village ordinance that requires pets to be leashed and owners to remove and properly dispose of pet excrement. Your cooperation in being a good neighbor allows everyone to enjoy our parks. Pets are not allowed on Glencoe Beach May 15 through September 15. Pets are not allowed inside any Park District facility unless it is a service pet, or a dog obedience class is in session. Pets must never be left unattended. For the safety and well-being of your pets, we ask that you leave your pets at home during the July 4th fireworks show. 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE BALANCES DUE & DECLINED CREDIT CARDS All account balances can be paid by Visa or MasterCard online by logging into your household account and selecting “Pay Your Account Balance.” There will be a $25 service fee for all NSF checks returned, and for all billable program fees that are past due for every month thereafter. A $10 additional fee will be charged for all declined/rejected credit cards. WAIT LIST POLICY If a participant is wait listed and a space opens in a program, the first person on the wait list will be automatically moved into the class. That participant will have 24 hours to provide payment or decline the open spot. If there is no communication and payment is provided, it will be assumed that the person who was moved into the class will participate. If no payment is received within 24 hours of enrollment, the next person on the wait list will be enrolled and the first person on the wait list will be disenrolled. All wait-listed customers will receive a refund if no class openings become available after 30 days from the start of a program. In the event openings occur, the Park District will notify the customer and payment will be due at that time. Payment must be received prior to the registrant being transferred in. THREE DAY WAIT PERIOD There is a three-day wait period from the date of class registration to your child’s start date for before or after school Park District classes. This timing allows updated information to be shared between Park District staff and Glencoe Schools. Thank you for your support as we work together on the safe dismissal of your children. PRORATING Prorated refunds will be done on a “per class basis,” less a service fee of 20% (not to exceed $20 of the program cost), and less for any amount incurred for materials, special clinics, costumes, uniforms, and/or other expenses. Camps and contractual programs will not be prorated. Prorated refunds will be based on the date the refunded request is received and not the last attended date. In medical circumstances, a prorated refund will be issued upon receipt of a doctor’s authorization. In the event of the participant’s relocation, a prorated refund will be issued less a service fee (20% but not to exceed $20 of the program cost) upon a receipt of a document that reflects imminent relocation. KIDS CLUB, EARLY LEARNING CENTER & CHILDREN’S CIRCLE An annual $125 non-refundable, non-transferable fee is required upon registration/start of each school year. Once the program has started, no prorated fees will be given for partial month’s attendance or withdrawal. All withdrawals from the program require a 30 days’ notice, which must be submitted in writing. In lieu of full tuition payments during the summer, an additional $300 fee will be billed on June 1 to Children’s Circle registrants who withdraw early, and do not attend in June, July and August. CAMP Camp refunds will be issued if requested at least (7) seven days before the start date of a camp, less a service fee of 20% of your total camp cost (Early Bird or Regular rate), with a max of $200. Note: If you drop your child from a camp less than (7) seven days prior to the start date of camp, NO REFUND will be issued. SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE The Glencoe Park District provides financial assistance/scholarships to residents who qualify based on specific eligibility requirements, and who are interested in enrolling in a program, but are unable to, due to financial hardship. Those seeking assistance must obtain a scholarship packet from the Glencoe Park District Takiff Center, complete the confidential application for financial assistance, and schedule an appointment with Family Service of Glencoe to discuss your household’s financial needs. Applications are reviewed on an individual basis, and notification of a decision is given within two weeks of the received application. Registrations are not processed until scholarship applications are approved and the participant’s portion is paid. Scholarships are not retroactive. Scholarship requests/applications should be received three to four weeks prior to the start of a requested program. GPD Scholarships must be authorized and approved prior to registration. Special Payment Arrangement Plan requests must be made at the time of registration. Placement is based on class availability at the time the registration is processed. Certain programs are not eligible for scholarship assistance through the Park District, where contractual agreements exist for instruction of services rendered. www.GlencoeParkDistrict.com • 847.835.3030 The Glencoe Park District is constantly striving to offer quality recreation programs to the public. If you feel a program did not meet your expectations due to the quality of instruction, facilities, or program content, we will refund your money, one hundred percent! This Guarantee excludes contractual programs, trips, leagues, special events, seasonal beach/ice passes, and rentals. To be eligible for a refund, you must: 1) Attend at least two classes and inform us within 48 hours after the second class, and 2) Complete our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee form, which is located on our website at www.glencoeparkdistrict.com. REFUNDS GENERAL POLICY Program fee refunds, less a service charge of 20% (not to exceed $20), will be made if a request is received at least (3) three business days before the start of any program, by phone or in person at the Takiff Registration Office. After that, refunds can only be given for medical reasons or relocation, and will be prorated. Refunds cannot be given for programs, or trips that require advance admission or entrance fees. • Medical refunds require a doctor’s note and will be prorated based on the date the medical documentation is received; no service fee applies. • League refund requests are due seven days before the fee payment deadline. If a participant attends a clinic, but not any team practice or games, and requests a refund due to injury, or realizes after the clinic that the sport is not for their child, we will refund the league fee, minus $50 for the clinic, $6 for the jersey and a $20 service fee. • When the Park District cancels programs due to insufficient registration, full refunds will be issued. Refunds will be issued within 7 days of a class cancellation. • For refunds less than $10, a household credit will be issued on your account to be used toward payment for future programs. All refunds may be added to your household account, upon request. • The Park District will not issue refunds for classes which are canceled due to inclement weather, or other circumstances beyond the District’s control. The Park District may schedule a make-up class, when possible. For Preschool, Children’s Circle, Camp and Kids Club refunds, please see below. • • All pre-paid fitness passes, Watts ice passes, beach tokens, and boat space rentals are non-refundable and non-transferable. • Other restrictions apply for facility rentals. • Relocation out of the area: Upon receipt of appropriate documentation that reflects imminent relocation, a prorated refund will be issued less 20%, but not to exceed $20. GLENCOE JUNIOR HIGH PROJECT The Glencoe Junior High Project is a non-profit youth organization dedicated to providing social and service programs for Glencoe middle school students. The GJHP focuses on enriching the social and emotional development of middle school students. We provide Glencoe youth opportunities to participate in social service activities that teach invaluable lessons of giving, helping, and sharing. The GJHP organizes events for middle school students to gather together to socialize and have fun. The GJHP also puts on an annual play in which 80-100 students participate in an extraordinary experience. The GJHP is located inside Central School, offering students a recreational area to spend time during recess or after school. For more information about the GJHP please visit gjhp.org. You can also contact the organization directly at (847) 835-7623 or [email protected]. www.GlencoeParkDistrict.com GYS GLENCOE YOUTH SERVICES 50 Glencoe Youth Services (GYS) was formed in 1971 after alarm over the death of a local teen from a drug overdose, and community concern that there was no place for the teens of Glencoe to go. After humble beginnings in the basement of the Glencoe Public Library and moving five times in the subsequent seven years, GYS has been situated at its current location (680 Greenwood Ave.) since the early 80’s where we continue with the mission to give the teens of Glencoe a place to call their own. GYS offers teens a place where they can confide in staff, meet new friends and participate in a wide range of activities that are geared toward aiding the youth of the community, and the community at large. To find out more about GYS, take a look at the programming schedule or see how you can help, visit www.glencoeyouthservices.org. SNAP SPECIAL NEEDS ADULT PROGRAM The Special Needs Adult Program (SNAP) is the longest running social and support program for young adults with disabilities in New Trier Township. Started in the early 1990’s and hosted by a number of different organizations, GYS took over the formal sponsorship of SNAP on April 1, 2008. Run similarly to GYS, SNAP provides many different programs and events geared toward providing activities and support to young adults who have graduated from high school. Participants gather on Tuesday nights from 6:30-9:30 PM in the GYS building to relax with friends, celebrate special events and meet new people. SNAP staff also provide extra individual support to it’s participants by helping to search for jobs, write resumes, accompany or provide a ride to an appointment and offer support during a time of crisis. GYS is proud to sponsor this great program. If you would like to learn more about SNAP, please call (847) 835-3121. OUR TEAM MEET OUR ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM!
