Reading Fair Report The reading fair was held on Saturday January 28, 2012. Under a sunny blue sky the stage was set. All was made ready by Ms. Marva Caesar- K -3 teacher, Pauline Duncome Resource center personel, Mrs Joan Knowles Turnquest -literacy coordinator at Oakes Field Primary, Jennifer Johnson - parent and myself Mrs Anatol C. Young. At 8 am volunteers began taking up their post. Mrs. Kemp -Registration desk, Mrs. Greene- face painting, Ms Johnson, Ms ____________ and Ms. Cunningham distribution of free reading book packages to all who registered for the book fair. Shortly after set up students began to arrive by bus, private vehicles and on foot. The Regatta Site was soon a hub of excited children The exciting event got on the way at about 9:30 am following the registration of the children who came on the last bus. The brief opening was chaired by the eloquent Mrs. Bernadette Rolle Principal of the Long Bay Cays Preschool .The Opening began with the singing of the National Anthem followed by a prayer given by the Chief Councillor Rev. James Pratt . Welcome and Purpose was then given by Mrs. Anatol Young Coordinator . Ms. Joan Turnquest - literacy coordinator at Oakes Field Primary - explained to the audience the importance of literacy. She stressed how important it is for people to become literate in today’s society. She also shared some benefits of being liberated such as the wealth of knowledge that can be gained. Afterwards, students volunteered to read to the entire audience. . A book detailing the true meaning of love was read by Ms. Forbes, after which a skit entitled “Go Read Child, Read” was then preformed Go Read Child Read! Mom: Anabella! Anabella! Anabella Oh! Lord way da gal is. I tired telling da child ya gatta stay in ya book if you want ta be smart an get somewhere in life. I don’t want her to be like me . The two words I know in this book, I had to bust my chest open so I could use my brain ta learn them. Anabella! Anabella! Bella: Yes Mama! Mama: Gal don’t vex me today! Way you bin all that time I bin callin you? Bella: Mama I was right in there. Mama: And you hearded me callin and you ain’t answer me. Bella: Sorry mama, but what did you want? Mama: I want know if you done read the book so you could find out why childen need to know how to read so they could go to college. Bella: I’m going to look on my blackberry to check that out. Mama: Gal wa I tell you bout lying! Bella: Mama I aint lying. Mama: You jus say you bin in there, now you tell me but you ga look on your blackberry, which means that you been back in the bush to them berry trees. And ain’t no berry black now. Plus the dumb of the dumbest know ain’t no words does be on no blackberry. Bella: Mamma ….. Mama: Shet ya mouth foe I slap ya down fa lying, then I gatta talk to them social people. Go get the book to find the thing. Bella: Mama I have a blackberry that mom got me for Christmas! Mama Gal ya still on this berry thing! Bella: Mmmmmmmmmmmm anyway I’m going inside to look on the net. Mama: Net! Net! Gal if I tell you ta take that net outta that drum in the back yard you won’t be fool so to do it! Ta open that net in front of my yard! Next thing ya know the police round my house thinkin I hauling bonefish. Gal not a day like it! Not one! Further moe, wa I sending you ta school fa. As long as you bin on Christ earth you don’t know aint no words on the net only cork and led? Child go get the book ta find the inflammation! Go!. Bella; Mama you don’t understand! Mama: Understand! You ga be standing under this stand if you don’t go get da book. Bella: I’m going to check my cell! Mama: Cell! Child wa wrong with your head! Ya don’t go in cell fa reading a book. Ya go in cell fa thiefin, lying, stabbin, shootin, and murderin,. Das wa I trying ta save ya from. Open one good book and learn to read so ya could go to college not to the cell! (written by Anatol C. Young) The Chief Councillor Rev. Pratt and the Island Administrator Mrs. Brenda Colebrooke greeted the audience then it was then time to separate into the various reading groups. Six Readers were identified Ms. Forbes – Deep Creek Primary School Mrs. Mckinney & Mrs. Kemp– South Andros High , Ms. Rolle – Long Bay Cays Preschool , Ms. Sanpal- teacher Deep Creek/High Rock , , Ms. Christine Cunningham – Claridge Primary Based on the registration of 140, each reader had at least 23 students, whom they led to separate booth. There they read to them for 10 - 12 minutes. Afterwards the children rotated from booth to booth to hear other readers. . The student returned to the meeting room where they engaged in the trading of books. Wow what excitement! When all the trading was done, all books left were on sale for $1.00. This venture netted $145.00 Books! Books! Books! Books! Lunch for the students consisted of either a hot dog or a hamburger served with a drink . Following lunch the children continued to reading , had their faces painted , or just relaxed while they waited to be transported home . It was amazing to see the support of the community of South Andros to the event. It deserves a resounding THANK YOU1 At the end of the event the school with the highest percentage (excluding the host school) and winning a Box book set of 50 books was High Rock Primary with 47% attendance the host school - Deep Creek Preschool had 50% attendance.
