Monthly Newsletter - Roots Public Charter School
June 2016
This Month We Honor and Celebrate…the birthday of
Paul Laurence Dunbar. Born on June 27, 1872, he was one of the most
famous poets of the 19th century. In his prose he used the rhythmic-flow of
Black-English. His poetry depicted the beauty of love, the joys of childhood
and the Black family.
We also celebrate our present day role model, Dr. Marian Wright Edelman,
who was born June 6, 1939. A graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law
School, she was the first Black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar Association.
Dr. Edelman is Founder and President of the Children's Defense Fund, the most
powerful national force advocating children's human rights. Presently, she resides
in Washington, DC.
