This South American nation is one of the most diverse and exciting countries in the region. Probably the most well-known manifestation of Argentine culture is the music known as tango originated in the slaughterhouse district of Buenos Aires at the end of the nineteenth century. HSV Newsletter August 2013 Dear members and friends of HSV, Some members of the Committee were invited to attend Independence Day celebrations in July. The first was the 7th of July organised by the Venezuelan Association of Australia. It was a very patriotic celebration with typical food, singers – including the popular group Cambur Pinton and dance. The Venezuelan community in Melbourne is growing and I am sure in years to come this Organisation will make an impact within the multicultural arena. The Colombian Independence Day had different activities including the visit of Carlos “el Pibe” Valderrama, an icon of Colombian football. Carlos showed his skills when together with friends versed a SBS team. It was an existing afternoon with Colombian food, music and the presence of one of the most important SBS personalities: Les Murray known as both the face and voice of football in Australia since 1980. The Peruvian Gala Night was the 27th of July. Again, the well-known Latin American atmosphere and friendliness was there in addition to the famous Peruvian cuisine. After all these social activities I come to the conclusion that the Hispanic culture has been definitely nicely accepted in a city characterised for being precisely multicultural. It is satisfying to see how Australians and members of other multicultural communities attend our events with the clear intention of knowing more about us. But our intention is not only socialising and networking but also providing economic sustainability to the Society. August is a critical month for the HSV as we will know the outcome of the two grants we applied in past months. Those grants are supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission. The first provides financial assistance for the general costs associated with running the Organization (Hall hire, public liability insurance, box, stationary, etc.). The second is called “Multicultural Festivals and Events Grant” and if successful, will be used as partial financial support for our “Dia de la Hispanidad” Gala Night in October. We are all positive about those outcomes and as always it has been mentioned here, the best recognition to our efforts is to know that members and friends of this Society really want to attend our programmed activities. Hasta pronto, Luis Alban Page 1 Christmas in July Cartagena de Indias By Esther Gomez Christmas in July has been a traditional event for the Society. It is the opportunity to celebrate Christmas with a winter feeling. This year the meeting was very familiar. We enjoyed Christmas food and the traditional “villancicos” interpreted by the Venezuelan groups Cambur Pinton. Special thanks to Graeme Walters for his extraordinary role as Santa Claus. Celebrating Hispanic Culture in Victoria Sat 16 November Brazil Sunday 8 December Christmas BBQ February 2014 Carnival party One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited is this historic city on the northern part of Colombia in the Caribbean coast region. The city was founded on June 1, 1533, and named after Cartagena, Spain. During the colonial period Cartagena served a key role in administration and expansion of the Spanish empire. It was a center of political and economic activity due to the presence of royalty and wealthy viceroys. Cartagena is the city most associated with pirates in the Caribbean. In 1984 Cartagena's colonial walled city and fortress were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today Cartagena is a city which draws interest from tourists all over the world who come to enjoy the history, the sights, the weather and nightlife. If you plan to travel to Colombia please spend several days in Cartagena and enjoy the colonial period, the modern city and the fashionable seaside resort of Colombia's second port. I can guarantee, you won’t be disappointed.
