Help Close the Achievement Gap:
Fund Como Education
As Minnesota’s most visited cultural
institution, Como is committed to helping
bridge the achievement gap in our
community by providing free educational
programs to every visitor, and affordable
family classes and school group programs
that build on children’s innate curiosity
about the natural world. Last year, Como’s
educational and interpretive programs
reached more than 600,000 children and
adults—a student population that rivals
Minnesota’s ten largest school districts
combined.
Your generous contributions for Como’s
Education Programs will provide
scholarships for award-winning summer
camps, mentoring programs for teens,
and progressive partnerships with area
schools. Free education programs and
scholarships are only possible because of
private support. Help us inspire our guests
and close the achievement gap.

TRAVELERS SUNSET AFFAIR:
GLOBAL ADVENTURE
A BENEFIT FOR
COMO PARK ZOO & CONSERVATORY
HOSTED BY
COMO FRIENDS
WELCOME TO
TRAVELERS SUNSET AFFAIR: GLOBAL ADVENTURE
Dear Friends:
Welcome to Travelers Sunset Affair: Global Adventure, a summer gala
to celebrate Como Park Zoo and Conservatory’s deep roots in our
community, as well as its astonishing evolution into the state’s leading
provider of conservation education.
That’s right. Thanks to growing classroom space, state-of-the-art
exhibits such as Polar Bear Odyssey, and community support from
people like you, Como now reaches more than 600,000 children and
adults with education programs that teach us all how to be better
stewards of the earth’s resources. That’s a student population larger
than Minnesota’s ten largest school districts combined.
The memories nearly one million school age children make at Como
every year are important —but the connections they begin to explore
at Como may be even more critical. In study after study, researchers
are finding that visiting non-formal education destinations like Como
can help children connect the dots between classroom curriculum
and real life. Whether it’s touching a polar bear’s paw, or being singled
out by an orangutan’s thoughtful gaze, connecting with a zoo animal
has been shown to foster empathy and understanding for others. In
fact, a single zoo visit has been shown to make young people more
likely to believe “I am part of the solution to nature’s problems.” Is
there any more important message we want to impart to the next
generation?
That’s why we’re so pleased that funds raised at Traveler’s Sunset
Affair will help to provide scholarships for camps at Como, mentoring
programs for teens, outreach programs at local libraries, and smart
partnerships with area schools—all proven tools to help close the
achievement gap and foster a life-long love of nature. Your contributions for Fund-a-Need, the Butterfly Release, and for the fantastic auctions items you’ll see in this catalog will all help maintain and expand
the legacy of high-quality education programs at Como.
All the best,
Nancy and Russ Nelson
