AROUND THE HOBBY
News and notes from the collector car world
Former OCW editor Tex Smith passes
Former Old Cars Weekly editor and
publisher Charley Roy Ugama Waya
Golaneeda, known around the automotive hobby as LeRoi “Tex” Smith, died
June 11 in Australia, where he had lived
during the last years of his life. Smith
was an icon of the hot rodding sport, but
was always involved with all types of
old cars and old car events.
Smith was born in Cleveland, Okla.,
to Esther Mae Welch on Jan. 4, 1934.
Later, he took the name of his stepfather,
Carlos Debs Smith. Tex was of Cherokee and Choctaw heritage.
Tex was a supporter of the first
Bonneville Salt Flats speed trials sanctioned by the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA). He crewed for
Lee Wooley’s Buick coupe in 1952. Also
in the ’50s, he raced a ’32 Ford coupe
with a flathead. Tex remained a fixture
in land speed racing, most prominently
as a journalist.
In 1957 he took a job as Associate
Editor at Hot Rod magazine in Los Angeles. Tex left Hot Rod in 1964 to launch
a successful freelance writing career. He
expanded into writing books for various
New York publishers including Dodd,
Mead & Co. during the ’60s. He wrote
on a wide range of activities, specializing in sports of interest to men: boating,
aircraft and cars.
Tex created TRM Publishing Co.
as the foundation for Tom McMullen’s
company. Starting in 1968, he introduced a series of successful magazines
such as Street Chopper, Chopper Guide,
Hot Bike and Street Rodder. Tex also
helped put Tom Medley’s Rod & Custom magazine into the mainstream as
the voice of the emerging “street rod”
movement.
In 1979, Tex moved to Iola, Wis.,
to become editor of Old Cars Weekly
and was almost immediately promoted
to publisher for all of parent company
Krause Publications’ automotive titles.
From there, he moved to Dallas, Texas,
to become PR Director for Interstate
Battery Co.’s Great American Race in
the early days of that event.
In 1987, Smith came out of retirement to start his own publishing company based around a popular magazine
he created called Hot Rod Mechanix. He
also developed an ever-growing line of
8
Great Race participants had their cars near the takeoff point in the
greater St. Louis area on June 18. There were 130 vehicles registered
with about 270 drivers participating. Various makes and models were
represented: Chevrolet, Mustang, Plymouth, VW, Volvo, Datsun, Mercury, Nissan, Austin Healey, LaSalle, Mercedes, Auburn, Peerless, Studebaker, Toyota and Willys. Leonard Harpenau was the driver of car #11, a
1928 Ford A in commercial form with single-rear-door access — a handy
way to beat the challenge of the road during the race since extra gear,
parts and tools could be easily reach from the rear. (Gerald Perschbacher photo)
specialty books.
Smith retired for the second time
in 1999. Following the death of his beloved wife Peggy, Tex remarried. From
that point on, he split his time between
homes in Idaho and Australia, with stopovers in Kauai, Hawaii.
Hudson to be fitted for disabled drivers
Driving Aids Development Corporation (DADC), a northern Virginia-based
hand control manufacturer, plans to restore and adapt a 1952 Hudson Hornet
convertible and invite people living
with disabilities to drive it through a series of “arrive and drive” events.
“The car belonged to my father-inlaw, Gene Smith,” said DADC President
Lee Perry, “He courted his wife in it, and
he brought home his daughter, Cheryl,
my wife, in it when she was born. He
was mid-restoration, all of the parts
free of rust and neatly categorized, and
the engine running, when he suffered a
stroke, leaving him paralyzed.”
Smith of Camp Hill, Pa., was a lifetime member of the Hudson-EssexTerraplane Club and the Antique Auto
Club of America. He passed away re-

cently, and was buried with a picture
of his beloved Hornet. Restoration is
underway at Jon Schuchart Customs in
Columbia, Pa., where the Hornet will be
re-furbished, re-assembled and painted
its original black color. DADC will outfit the Hornet with its suite of hand and
foot controls so that licensed drivers can
take the Hudson for a spin using stateof-the-art adaptive equipment.
1948 Daimler steals show at Hershey
A 1948 Daimler DE36 Drophead
Coupe owned by Mark Hyman of St.
Louis drove off with the coveted Elegance at Hershey “Best of Show,” also
known as the Governor’s Cup. In addition to the Garden Party showcase of
cars, the fifth annual event featured The
Grand Ascent hill climb for vintage race
cars, the 5K Challenge runners’ race and
the unique Concorso Bizarro event.

1951-52 Dodges
1951 Dodge Coronet
“D
rive the very new, very beautiful ’52 Dodge,”
suggested one of the Hamtramck, Michigan
automaker’s ads that year. The truth is the
cars were basically the same as 1951 models, since Chrysler Corporation built the same series through two model
years. The reason was Chrysler Corporation — and Dodge
www.oldcarsweekly.com
in particular — were busy turning out military vehicles for
use in Korea. There was little time to spend to completely
redesign the civilian cars.
The Wayfarer series, previously designated the D33
line, became the D41 line in 1951 and was continued in
1952. The Meadowbrook/Coronet line, which was previ-

ously called the D34 series, was redesignated the D42 series.
New-for-1951 styling changes started at the front of
the cars, where a new grille appeared. A large chrome bar
“looped” across the entire width of the front end at the bottom. On its upper portion were five scores that created four
segments at the center. Round parking lights and directionals were nestled in either end on the loop.
On the bottom the chrome bar rose up to meet with the
bumper guards. Above the loop was a vent-like molding
with six open segments. Above the grille, the Dodge name
was spelled out in chrome block letters below a shield carrying the Dodge emblem of the day. A ram’s-horn hood mascot appeared on the nose, with a chrome molding extending
from it back down the center of the hood. The headlights
were round with chrome trim rings and the front bumper
was of wraparound design with twin bumper guards.
Body side bright-metal trim was similar to that seen in
1950, with a horizontal molding running down the front
fender and extending onto the door, a horizontal rear fender
molding and bright rocker sill moldings. A split-style, flatglass windshield was used. Series nameplates decorated
the front fender, below the horizontal molding.
Some advertisements depicted Dodges with white sidewall tires, but many showed them with black sidewall tires.
Many cars were being delivered without whitewalls, since
continued fighting in Korea was limiting the availability
of these tires.
Dodge continued to stress the value of its cars in advertisements, many of which were still printed in black-andwhite. “Cars costing up to $1,000 more can’t match this
combination,” said a 1951 announcement that promoted
the performance of the “Get-Away” six, operating economy, the comfort of knee-level seats, the ease of optional
Gyro-Matic Drive or standard Fluid Drive, the “yearsahead” styling and D-E-P-E-N-D-A-B-I-L-I-T-Y (“Dodge
put the word in the dictionary” it boasted.) The sales theme
was essentially unchanged in 1952, although the price differential between the Dodge and its higher-priced competitors was adjusted downward.
“It’s new! It’s true for ’52! “ said one ad. “You could
pay hundreds of dollars more and not get all this new ’52
Dodge gives you.”
In 1951, the Wayfarer series contained the same cars,
but prices went up to the range of $1,795 to $1,936. The
wheelbase was again 115 inches. Overall length increased
to 199-7/8 inches. For 1952, prices increased by a little over
$100 on the closed cars, while the Sportabout’s price was
unchanged.
For some reason, the 1952 Wayfarers were an inch
shorter in specifications. Dodge built only |1,002 Wayfarer
Sportabouts and dropped this model before the 1952 model-year started. Over the two-year span, 6,702 Wayfarer
coupes and 70,700 fastback sedans were also made.
The 1951-1952 Meadowbrook and the Coronet models
were again constructed on the 123-1/2-inch wheelbase and

had 206-7/8 inches of overall length. The
Town sedan and the woodie station wagon
were dropped by the beginning of the 1951
model year and the eight-passenger sedan
disappeared not long afterwards. Prices for
the other body styles ranged from $2,132 to
$2,768 in 1951 and from $2,240 to $2,908
in 1952. Over the two years, 5,550 Coronet
convertibles were built and production of
Diplomat hardtops increased quite a bit to
21,600. Dodge also kept producing the Sierra all-steel station wagon, building 4,000
of these during the two years.
All Dodge models made between 1946
and 1952 were powered by the same in-line
L-head six-cylinder engine. It had a 3-1/4 x
4-5/8-inch bore and stroke and 230.2 cubic
inches of displacement. The four-main-bearings engine had a 6.70:1 compression ratio
and a single Stromberg 1-1/2-inch singlebarrel downdraft carburetor. From 19501952, output was rated at 103 hp at 3600
rpm and 184 foot-pounds of torque at 1200
rpm. Despite Dodge’s “Get-Away” name for
this motor, it’s real-life strengths were durability and reliability, not power and speed.
From a production standpoint, the

325,694 cars built by Dodge in calendar-year 1951 was the second highest
total in company history, after 1950’s
record of 332,782 assemblies. Even
though production “ceilings” were
instituted by the National Production
Agency, Dodge was able to increase
its share of total industry output that
year from 4.99 percent to 6.10 percent.
Dodge passed by Oldsmobile and
Mercury to become America’s sixth
largest automaker. Dodge held onto
sixth position in 1952, when calendaryear output was 259,519 units and
Dodge made 5.98 percent of America’s cars.
Car collectors are more interested in model-year production totals, which tell you how many cars of
each design were built. Even though
the 1951 and 1952 designs were, for
all practical purposes, identical, their
production was quite different. A total of 292,000 of the 1951 Dodges
were made, while the number of 1952
Dodges built was just 206,000. It
should be noted Dodge changed the
month in which the model year began
during this period. Production of 1951
Dodges started in January of that year,
while production of 1952 Dodges began in November of 1951.
One might think the longer 1952
model year would have increased
sales, but the opposite happened. This
had a lot to do with the lack of a V-8
engine. Chrysler was aware of the
problem and started to do a major revamp of Dodge Main, during 1951, to
prepare for assemblies of V-8s for the
1953 models.
Six-cylinder engine building facilities were gradually phased out of
the picture and parts inventories were
built up to tide over production work
while various departments were relocated and transferred. Although this
changeover was not completed by the
end of the year, Dodge had cleared
enough space to start installing the
giant new “transfermatic” machines
used to build V-8s.

Professional panel painting
‘59 Impala panels get the full treatment in Ken’s Klassics paint booth
■ By Brian Earnest
B
y the time shop foreman and
resident painter T.J. Krueger of
Ken’s Klassics — a very cool
high-end restoration facility in rural
Muscoda, Wis. — gets a car into his
booth for painting, the car has already
been sprayed and re-sprayed many
times over. The doors, trunk lid, hood
and other parts from a 1959 Chevrolet
Impala that Krueger was tasked with
painting were a good example. They
had already been hit with a coat of ZChrome Rust Defender, Glasurit Etch
Primer, and at least three coats of Glasurit Filler Primer. The parts had been
block sanded, then eventually wetsanded with 600- and 800-grit paper
www.oldcarsweekly.com
before finally reaching the paint stage.
Once he gets the pieces from the
Impala — the actually body tub will
be painted later — Krueger has to
painstakingly tape up all the holes and
edges and carefully hang each piece on
wires. From there he follows the same
process every time: hit everything with
degreaser; remove all the lint from the
degreasing rag with a tack cloth; spray
three coats of base color; then follow
up with four coats of clear. And above
all, keep everything clean!
“We’ve kind of got a recipe of how
we do it, and that’s what we stick to,”
says Krueger, who has worked for the
shop for the past 28 years, painting
hundreds of cars during that time.
“This is the final process over the
top of everybody’s work. It’s a combined effort,” Krueger says. “I do the
painting, but it’s everybody’s work. Everybody works on the car to get it to
this point.”
The 1959 Impala will receive a fairly straightforward black paint job. The
good news for Krueger is that it’s not
metallic, which is harder to mix and
shoot. The bad news is that black can
be unforgiving. “It definitely shows the
quality of your work,” he admits.
Following are the steps Ken’s
Klassics took to get the Impala parts
painted. ■

The day before painting, the booth is thoroughly cleaned and all the parts taped and carefully hung on wires. With so many pieces to
spray, this process will be repeated several times — the shop’s paint booth isn’t big enough to hang everything at once. And it’s not just
the paint booth that needs to be clean. “Basically I make all the guys stop doing anything that makes dust in the shop. A lot of times we’ll
even have the guys go home for the day if I’m painting,” Krueger said. “Even that little bit of walking around in the shop creates dust, and
that does get past the filters. I’ve always got to be planning ahead of what I’m going to have those guys doing when I know I’m going to
be painting a car. [If I didn’t], it would look like a salted nut roll with all that dust and dirt. This is a straight black paint job, but you know
guys can have six figures invested in a car, so the paint needs to be flawless.”
The primed parts are sprayed with a degreaser. “You have to let the degreaser flash off, too,” Krueger noted. “It sprays on wet and
then evaporates. You usually wait 15 minutes after you spray degreaser for all the solvents to come out. “

A special tack cloth will pick up any lint that is left from degreasing.
The tools of the trade. Most shops will have a variety of spray guns. Krueger prefers having one gun for both the paint and clearcoat stages.
The disposable plastic PPS cups don’t need to be cleaned up after use in the paint gun, and they can also be covered and used to store
left-over paint.

“When I paint, I learned a long time ago,
when I went to a paint seminar with
John Kosmoski, the House of Colors
guy, he said, ‘When you paint, try to
think like you’re a robot,’” Krueger said.
“Overlap your spray pattern 50 percent,
and then paint like you’re a robot, just
back and forth. And make sure you’re
hitting all your edges. That’s a big thing.
You go to a lot of shows and you get
down underneath cars and the rockers
are a little bit light colored or look like
the were oversprayed a little instead
of being nice and clear-coated. “ These
parts will get three coats of black.
“I usually give it about 10 minutes
between coats,” Krueger said. “By the
time you start on one end and get to the
other, you’ve already taken 5 minutes,
maybe 10 minutes. So you don’t have to
wait long.”

The paint gun gets thoroughly
cleaned with thinner before
shooting the clear stage. “I like
the old gravity feeds, but these
new guns are really nice,” Krueger
said. “ You can turn these upsidedown and spray underneath the
rocker panels. When you first
start with these, you spray and
pull all the air out of them so
they’ve got an air-tight seal... A
lot of guys like to switch guns
out. I like to use the same Iwata
(spray)gun and just clean it out.
You know, guns have come a
long ways. I really like this gun a
lot. It’s a nice universal gun with
a nice big pattern. The big thing
they told us with these Iwatas,
they need to stay extremely
clean.” Mixing cups have to be
cleaned, too, of course (below).
This wall thermometer shows what
reducers should be used, depending on
temperature and humidity.

The paint booth floor is kept moist and frequently sprayed down to eliminate dust.

Clear can be tougher to spray
than the base color, even for
professionals. “The base is pretty
easy. Metallic is harder,” Krueger
said. “But clear is tricky because if
you put it on too thick you run it,
and if you put it on too dry it looks
like gravel. You want that happy
medium. The first two coats go on
a little quicker because I only spray
the outsides of everything. The
jambs on the fenders and doors
don’t get sprayed on the first two
coats. They’ll get sprayed in the last
two coats.”
Ken’s Klassics
The Impala body panels and doors will be baked either under a lamp or under the sun after their
fourth coat of clear. “We’ll probably let it sit about a week,” Krueger said. “What we’ll do is cut it
open with 800-grit and let it sit like that so the chemicals can come out. Then we’ll bake it, or
put it out in the sun, that’s just as good as putting a bake lamp on it. Then we’ll 1,000-grit it, then
we’ll 1,500-grit it, then 3,000-, then we’ll be ready to buff.”

HARD
KNOCKS!
Rodman Bingham was an investigator and commercial photographer from Menlo Park, Calif. According
to his daughter, Patrice Bingham Offenhauser, Rodman “had a police scanner speaker in every room of the
house, and in his car — big sweeping antenna on the
back. He even had a special headset speaker under his
pillow. His ear would always be tuned to the squelching
of several emergency stations — drove Mom and me
crazy! If he heard a call about an accident, he’d leave the
house, hop in his car, and often be one of the first on the
scene. It wasn’t so much being an ‘ambulance chaser’ as
much as priding himself on having the first, and the best,
photos of a crime or accident scene which could then be
used in the newspaper or in court proceedings.
“My father saw many gruesome and sad human casualties at these accident scenes, and I can remember hear-
ing him cry in the darkroom once at something he must
have seen — I believe it involved a child hit on a bicycle.
Yes, he did all his own darkroom work. He could have
pictures developed and printed and up to the San Francisco Chronicle — an hour drive — by midnight to make
the next morning’s front page. He never photographed an
accident scene for its exploitive or voyeuristic opportunities. He never took, or sold, pictures that were of a gruesome nature just for money. He was extremely professional, with an eye more towards the forensic aspect of
an accident scene rather than the carnal.”
Following are a few of the amazing snapshots that
Bingham took over the years. These photos and many
more were later published in a book featuring his work,
CRASH!, published by Krause Publications/F+W
Media.

This Chevrolet coach “took it on the nose” after running through a wooden fence and down a steep
embankment. As you can see, the accident literally “knocked the stuffing out” of the car’s front seat. A hefty
tow truck with a sturdy double-boom wrecker unit was dispatched to the scene, but getting this Chevy back on
its tires may have taken some bigger equipment. Onlookers have gathered to watch the show.
We don’t know the name of the street that this ’46 Studebaker club coupe rolled over on, but the house
number on the mailbox crushed under the car is 282. It didn’t take long for the “Neighborhood Investigative
Team” to arrive by bicycle and check out the situation. Overall, the car doesn’t look like it was damaged too
badly, but the occupants of the Studebaker must have been quite shaken up.

Hoods on some Buicks of the ’40s and ’50s could be lifted from either side or — as happened here to a 1947
model by accident — completely removed. In this case, a 1951 Nash Statesman Super did the honors and the
big Buick seems to have suffered most in the deal. Peter’s Fine Food Restaurant in the background served sea
food when this accident occurred on February 22, 1955.
This crash on June 17, 1959 involved a 1949 Oldsmobile 76 Deluxe Club Sedan with fender skirts. The car had
fastback styling and may have taken the “fast” part of the design description a little too literally. When the
driver lost control, the car hit a pole and knocked down some traffic lights.

This 1949 Pontiac Chieftain Sedan-Coupe looks like it tried to get through the door to the men’s room and didn’t
quite fit. A “Silver 8 Streak” script on the front fender indicates the reliable 248.9-cid Pontiac flathead straighteight is under its bent-up hood. Silver Streak is not a model name. It refers to the “waterfall” hood trim. However, it actually appeared on the cars in 1948 and 1949, causing some confusion over the nomenclature.
It looks like someone lost control of this 1950 Ford Fordor and ran into a restaurant or café. The crash ruined
some cactus plants and left quite a mess. This accident occurred on February 2, 1960. The teenagers eyeballing the front end damage to the car must have been fans of the television series “77 Sunset Strip.” The boy in
the light jacket, especially, has the “Kookie” look popularized by actor Ed Byrnes.

Here’s a wrecked car that would definitely be restored today. The 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe 8 convertible

This officer must have been “point person” on the accident investigation team. Something about the 1950
Packard’s broken rear window has caught his attention. Beginning Oct. 1, 1949, the 23rd Series “Golden
Anniversary” Packards — like this one — were designated 1950 models for registration purposes. At almost the
same time, Ultramatic Drive was introduced.

Here’s one way to create excitement in a normally sleepy neighborhood. An AAA wrecker is on the scene
getting ready to haul away a 1951 Buick that ran into the 1956 Chevy in the background. The wrecker – parked
just behind the Buick – is a “Task Force”-style GMC operated by Crestwood Pontiac, a dealership once located
at the intersection of Alma and Forest in Palo Alto, California. The date of this crash was May 4, 1957.
The two-tone 1954 Chrysler Newport hardtop on the left seems to have had a big fender bender with a stately
looking 1951 or 1952 Imperial Newport hardtop. The signs in the background say “one way” and “stop,” but it
might be that one of these cars was going the wrong way and the other didn’t stop.

“Shoebox” Fords were a favorite of West Coast hot rodders and customizers. This 1951 Custom Deluxe convertible has a continental tire kit and a hopped-up look about it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite fast enough to
get out of the way of whatever hit it. The accident took place on Jan. 21, 1958. The Official Automobile Guide of
that year lists values of $230-$405 for a seven-year-old Ford convertible.
Featuring Chrysler Corporation’s well-known “box on box” postwar styling, this 1951 Plymouth two-door sedan
was only five years old when it met its doom on California Highway 101. A close look with a magnifying glass
shows it to have completely bald front tires, so an accident may have been waiting to happen. The damage was
caused by a crash with a 1950 Ford.

Hugging a lamppost like “Freddie the Freeloader” — a tipsy character created by comedian Red Skelton — this
’52 Ford Crestline Sunliner looks a little helpless. Though not quite a rare car when new, with production of
22,534 units, such a ragtop is certainly very collectible today. The convertible was a V-8-only model and used
Ford’s 239-cid/101-hp flathead V-8 to get around. This one was worth $400-$600 when the March 19, 1958
crash occurred.
“C’mon guys, get those hands out of your pockets and give me a little push,” says the ’52 Ford convertible also
seen in the previous photo. As you can tell in this view, the car didn’t impact the lamp post head-on. It was
probably sliding out of control to the left when it hit against the “immovable object.” There’s plenty of damage
to the fender parts, hood and grille. In addition, some front suspension damage appears likely, too.

This pile of parts used to be a proud 1955 Imperial with air conditioning, which was a pretty rare option in 1955.
Only 7,840 of these Series C69 sedans were built, and they sold for $4,483. A 331.1-cid/250-hp Firepower Hemi
V-8 lies under that bent-in-half hood. This car was struck by a van on March 25, 1972. Too bad! If it had survived
just a few more years, until the old-car hobby boomed in the late ’70s, it surely would have wound up with a
collector.
Now lacking a hood and windshield, this 1955 Dodge Royal Lancer two-door hardtop looks like the loser in

“Stop” it says on the road, in big letters, but someone didn’t stop fast enough to avoid hitting a 1952 Chevrolet

“Royal.”
This ’55 Ford Country Sedan station wagon looks like it impaled itself during this crash. One fence

much of its value.

The 1955 Thunderbird was an automotive sensation in 1955. Seeing one driving on the street was enough to
draw a big crowd. Seeing one up ended in a crash was a far less common sight. With a steep-for-the-time base
price of $2,944, most owners were pretty careful when tooling around in a T-Bird, but as we all know, accidents
happen. This one took place on Halloween night in 1955, so the car was no more than a year old.
The warning sign says “Stop Ahead,” but the owner of the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air two-door hardtop obviously
didn’t heed the warning. The V-8-powered Chevy took a dive into a big hole in the road. There was no cell
phone use to blame for this June 13, 1960, accident. The smile on the policeman’s face seems to suggest that
no one was seriously hurt in this mishap. The car seems to be missing its rear fender script and logo badge.

Looking a bit like a new hire on her first day on the job at a travel agency, this 1956 Oldsmobile did a bit more
damage to the office than you see at first glance. The car appears to have smashed through the window and
“re-arranged” the furniture a bit. This crash happened on June 3, 1963. In addition to the car itself, office items
such as the dial phones and typewriter are collector’s items now.
Tailfins on cars and travel trailers were both popular items in 1961, when this crash occurred. The date was
May 8, so the owner of the travel trailer may have been heading off on a what seemed like a carefree vacation
when disaster struck. In any case, the 1957 Dodge Custom Royal four-door hardtop took the worst of it. In
addition to the frontal damage, if you look close you’ll see that the car’s right-hand fin is bent out of shape.

the impact, both GM cars wound up pointing in the same direction.
In late-1950s accidents — such as this crash on June 30, 1959 — it was common to see foreign cars tangled up

High and dry parts, cars
Idaho’s L&L Classic Auto a parts source for more than 50 years
■ By Ron Kowalke
T
ake a minute to think about how
much the old car hobby — as well
as life itself — has changed in the
past half century. Little is the same as it
was 50 years ago, but one constant has
been L&L Classic Auto. This salvage
yard located in Wendell, Idaho, has
been a major parts source serving hobbyists that entire time.
Having been in business for more
than 50 years, yard owner Larry Harms
estimates his inventory has grown to
“somewhere between 7,000 and 8,000
cars.” He added that 85 percent of his
cars and trucks are vintage (1979 and
older), with the starting point in the
1920s. According to Harms, the majority of the vehicles in his yard range
from the 1940s to ’60s, but there’s also
a depth in ’30s Ford coupes, Tudors and
Fordors. He further breaks down the
yard’s offerings to being 70 percent cars
vs. 30 percent trucks.
The inventory arranged over the 160
acres that comprise the yard is unique.
While walking among the randomly
clustered vehicles, stopping and doing a
double-take becomes routine. Inventory
includes rare cars, muscle cars, coupes,
an original postwar hot rod, sedan deliveries and even a Citroen DS19 sedan
whose love-it-or-hate-it styling stands
out parked among a row of domestic
cars.
Harms has segregated “project cars”
from parts vehicles in several sections
of the yard, explaining that parts removal from those project vehicles is forbidden. “We only put the project cars on
our website (www.llclassicauto.com),”
according to Harms. He stressed that
titles exist for most of the vehicles in

inventory, or a title can be obtained if one does not exist, although he cautioned that it takes “a couple of weeks.”
Among the hundreds of project vehicles noted while touring the yard were a 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee hardtop,
a rare ’53 De Soto Firedome convertible (1,700 built) and the
aforementioned original hot rod roadster. The roadster appears as if it drove off the silver screen from vintage “B” movies such as “Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow” or “Hot Rod Gang,”
and has been parked ever since.
Examples sighted of rare vehicles in exceptional condition
included a 1954 Mercury Monterey Sun Valley hardtop (9,761
produced), its chrome and tinted Plexiglas half top appearing
like new. More modern, and a perfect restoration project for
a youngster just starting in the hobby, was a 1977 Ford Pinto
Cruising Wagon, originally marketed as a mini Econoline van.
Aside from a damaged grille, this Pinto retains its mod graphics, porthole-in-a-panel rear treatment, styled wheels and roof
rack.
Having a period-original hot rod in his inventory seems
only natural, as Harms is a former hot rodder/drag racer. He
proudly showed a 1961 photograph of his 1930s Ford pickup

he converted to a hot rod and raced both on the street and strip.
“I ran a 12.88 [elapsed time] and 113 mph at the Pocatello
(Idaho) Dragway in 1962,” Harms recalled. “That was really
moving back then.”
The background for that 1961 photo was Larry’s Body
Shop in downtown Wendell, where Harms got his start in the
salvage business. Having accumulated cars and trucks through
his body shop work, Harms said, “We took up half a city block
in town and had over 300 cars.”
Outgrowing the downtown site, Harms said he opened the
salvage yard at its current north Wendell location in 1967. He
used the first letters of he and wife Linda’s first names to title
L&L Classic Auto, which remains today. During our visit in
May 2014, Harms had four employees, including yard manager Ron Ewing, who’s been in that position for 22 years.
The yard’s terrain is mildly hilly. Aisles are well defined,
but there are rocks jutting from the ground that can cause tripping. Also, Harms employs free-range cattle to roam the yard
and keep the grass down. Aside from tripping on rocks, watching where you step is critical to avoid stepping in dung.
Harms stated he tries to group same-make vehicles togeth-

that searching thoroughly is essential. Harms also said he and
Ewing have a good handle on the yard’s loose parts availability, as there is no computerized listing for this segment. There
are numerous parts piles scattered throughout the yard, so the
thrill is in the hunt as rigorous searching may uncover some
forgotten treasure.

McBride’s salvage yard features
orphans and other postwar iron
Utah car stash offers plenty of solid sheet metal and clean trim
By David Fleischer
In 2012, I went to Grantsville, Utah, about 50 miles west
of Salt Lake City, to visit McBride’s salvage yard.
The main reason I visited the yard was to follow a lead
on a 1958 Edsel Citation two-door hardtop rumored to be in
the yard. When I arrived at the yard, I found the car, but it
was just a gutted shell that was pretty well picked over. Regardless, I had a really fun time exploring the yard..
Dennis McBride, who owns the salvage yard, told me
that in 1940, his father bought a 1937 Cord convertible with
a supercharger from a used car lot. Until his passing, Dennis’s father was an old car enthusiast, and Dennis remains
a collector. During my visit, he took me to see his personal
collection of cars, which is quite impressive. I did not take
pictures of his private collection, but I felt honored that he
wanted to share it with me.
At the time of my visit, McBride’s salvage yard was also
impressive, although it was once a much bigger yard. Before
my visit, many cars had been crushed after being thoroughly
picked over. In 2012, there were about 250-300 vintage cars
left in the yard. Although many postwar makes are represented, there seems to be an abundance of Ford products,
with a healthy amount of General Motors vehicles and a
disproportionately large amount of Studebaker and Hudson
cars. ■
Save the wheels and a few bits of trim, this 1955 Chrysler sedan is very complete, but most notably, it’s also extremely solid.

The prancing horse stable
Midwest suburb hosts elite restoration facility with a knack for Ferrari
By Angelo Van Bogart
F
rom a small Wisconsin shed,
Wayne Obry groomed his restoration business over 35 years into
a preeminent Ferrari restoration source
with the world’s highest accolades to its
credit. Nearly 50 employees now roll out
as many as six complete Ferrari restorations each year from the three buildings that make up Motion Products Inc.
(MPI) in the huddled city of Neenah,
Wis. And each of those restorations is
worthy of the lawns at the Pebble Beach
Concours d’Elegance to Italy’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
How Obry evolved from a onestall shop housing a Jaguar in 1979 to
a world-renowned Ferrari restoration
shop with thousands of square footage
can be pinpointed to one customer, according to MPI project manager Dustin
Wetmore.
“A guy named Joe Marchetti (of International Auto Inc.) that did a lot of
Ferrari dealing and service had [Obry]
pick up a car, and it was basically just a
used car spiff-up,” Wetmore said. “Marchetti said, ‘If you do good for me, we’ll
keep sending you cars. If you do bad for
me, you’ll never touch another Ferrari
again.’”
Obry’s work was clearly met with
satisfaction, and more red heads wearing the prancing horse galloped into the
shop. However, Wetmore said that it was
a Ferrari 250 Long Wheel Base California Spider restoration that put MPI on

the radar of Ferrari owners around the
world about 20 years ago. That Ferrari
made a splash at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and it was the first
swing of a one-two punch that brought
MPI to the forefront among Ferrari owners.
“The event that solidified [MPI] was
a Ferrari 212 export with a Pinin Farina body they restored and brought to
Pebble Beach that ended up being the
first 100-point Ferrari at Pebble Beach,”
Wetmore said. “Once that happens, you
pretty much can’t help but be noticed.”
Maintaining such a high level of
quality often means controlling many
of the aspects of restoration. Faced with
the need to reproduce the unobtainable
rare vintage Ferrari parts required for
100-point restorations, MPI soon began
creating parts for its projects. Today, the
shop can build almost anything that a
restoration requires, whether it be for a
Ferrari or any of the other domestic or
foreign cars it restores.
“With our cad cam capability and 3D
scanning and low-volume machining,
54
we have the equipment to make parts,”
Wetmore said. Some parts, such as emblems, are made one at a time, while
other items, such as cast engine parts or
distributors, may be made in multiples
and added to inventory. Those parts are
then made available as needed to customers or other restorers.
MPI’s capabilities are used on more
than its six or so complete Ferrari restorations per year. At any time, there are
about 50 cars among MPI’s three buildings. Some will receive full restorations,
but most will receive partial restorations, mechanical builds, maintenance
work or a combination of these services.
The cars and the work that brings
them to MPI are as diverse as the business’ skills. Among the cars on hand
recently were a Datsun 240Z, a Camaro
resto-mod and a Mercedes-Benz Gullwing. Before each leaves the shop, it will
be thoroughly tested. No car undergoes
more scrutiny than one that receives a
complete restoration in the care of MPI.
There is a strict process for cars that
receive full rebuilds at MPI. Once a car
Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / July 16, 2015
enters the doors, the staff at MPI has the
owner fill out what he expects from the
restoration to reflect how the car will be
used (points and/or concours-judged,
race car, driver, etc.). The car is assigned
a job number to identify it and its parts
and a rough schedule of milestones for
progress is determined. Then, it is immediately placed into Obry’s experienced hands. For an entire week, Obry
drives the car to and from the shop,
making notes regarding a vehicle’s weak
points that will need to be addressed in
the restoration.
“That way we know what we are
getting into,” Wetmore said. “He can
determine the brake and steering performance. Any driveability concern is
noted, no matter how miniscule. Then
we’ll do a full electrical evaluation and
we’ll look it over to see if any parts are
incorrect... so we can come up with a
list of parts we may need to replace. We
basically have to vet all the components
of the car to restore the car as correctly
as we can.”
The car is then researched to ensure it
www.oldcarsweekly.com
is authentically restored while it’s components are thoroughly
photographed right down to the part numbers, bulbs, lenses
and engravings. If there are incorrect components — and in
the case of Ferraris, many have been upgraded with later parts
— MPI replaces them with restored parts, or parts it must
make.
The subject car then goes to the dedicated disassembly
room, where it is torn down. Components that must be restored are sent to various areas of MPI so that when the chassis and body are painted, the parts are ready to be re-installed.
“Once we have a work list put together, we start metal repairs and while all that is going on, the engine is being rebuilt, the transmission is being rebuilt and the components
are getting rebuilt,” Wetmore said. “It’s such a huge advantage
to have those parts done and waiting to go when the body is
done. We try to take the experience that a dealership line tech
would have. We try to take that kind of mentality and that kind
A 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coupe Long Wheel Base in

www.oldcarsweekly.com
of thinking. That way, at the end, there are less surprises and
less chance of error.”
The car’s components all of the way up to the engine are
also tested on the shop’s dynos before they are installed on the
car. This methodology ensures the components are fully sorted
before they go into the car, thus avoiding potential scratches or
damage to fresh paint and body work.
The whole restoration process on a Ferrari in average condition can take as little as 12 months, a credit to MPI’s efficiency and expertise. The final step is a road test that ensures
the car is ready to be delivered to the owner, whether it be on
a show field, race track or to his home.
As MPI expands its expertise to Lamborghini and additional foreign and domestic marques, expect those days of the tiny
shed to look more quaint by each accolade with each passing
year. ■

Chevrolet’s coupe-pickup traveled its own unique path from 1973-’87
Australian farmer Slim Westman originated the idea for a
vehicle that became known as the Ute and Chevrolet was not
involved. Westman heard about pickup trucks that people in
America were using on their farms. They did their chores with
them during the week and drove them to church on Sunday.
Slim got in touch with Ford’s Australian branch about making a cheap-to-operate, dual-purpose vehicle that combined
the styling and comfort of a passenger car with the utility of
a pickup. Lewis T. Bandt, chief designer at Ford in Geelong,
Victoria, took the idea and created the 1934 Ford V-8 Model
302 UTE, which sold well and inspired Holden (GM’s Aus-
tralian branch) to develop one. The GM-H Ute was based
on a 1934 Chevy from the United States, that came in CKD
(completely-knocked-down) form and was assembled by local workers. This became the best-selling Ute. In 1951, a Ute
based on the Holden 215 became the first Ute designed and
manufactured in Australia.
Utes never caught on in America, but the idea of a car-pickup was tried as early as the 1930s. Ford was first to bring the
Ute concept to America in a high-volume way with the 1957
Ranchero. Seeing Ford’s success with the Ranchero, General
Motors decided to offer a car-based pickup. Chevy’s 1959 El

This streamlined-looking, dealer-installed Hop Cap shell camper mounted on this 1975 El Camino SS had a

Of the last El Camino
from 1987, the
Chevrolet sales
catalog noted “The
end product makes
a uniquely bold,
personal statement.”
Three models were
offered.
Camino was based on the big Chevy Impala. It had the gullwing styling of the cars, but with a load box that could hold 34
cubic feet of cargo. El Caminos came in 13 solid colors and 10
two-tones and had a choice of one six-cylinder engine or two
V8s. The model continued into 1960 and was then dropped.
In 1964, the El Camino re-appeared as a mid-sized Chevelle-based pickup. By 1967, it had a new grille and a new 396cid “big-block” V-8. For 1968, a new SS 396 version greeted
performance buffs and production topped 40,000 units. The
’69 was a carryover model with nearly 50,000 built. Performance in the El Camino peaked in 1970 with a 454-cid 450hp LS6 V-8. Tougher emissions laws and the elimination of
leaded fuel in 1971, caused a drop in power ratings.
The 1973 El Camino received its first new body since 1968.
It was a taller and some five inches longer. All models had
impact-resistant front bumpers and were substantially improved in roadability, comfort and styling. Engines included a
de-tuned 250-cid inline six, a 307-cid V-8 and two 350s. The
base El Camino compared to a Chevelle Deluxe. The one-stepup Custom was like a Malibu and had an SS 454 option. Fancy

through 1977 models. A new Classic trim level was added
in 1974. It included wide rocker panel moldings, an armrest
seat and fancier trim. The SS package was a $215 option and
the Conquista package for the Classic model was about $125.
During this period, the base model had single headlights,
while upscale versions used dual headlights. The grille and
taillight designs changed annually and the SS became more
of a lick-’em/stick ’em model than a true high-horsepower
muscle truck.
Mid-size Chevys were down-sized in 1978. Chevy truck
engineers felt that making the El Camino Classic Malibusized would have compromised its limited cargo capacity. Instead, the new wheelbase was made about an inch longer than
the old one, although the body was several inches shorter and
weight was reduced by 200 to 300 lbs. Interior head and legroom grew. The Conquista and SS options were carried over
and were joined by a new Royal Knight package.
Full-frame construction was retained in the new El Camino. The base engine was now a thrifty V-6. Other top selling
features included a standard front stabilizer bar, extensive
corrosion-resistance treatments, the incorporation of 14 noiseinsulating body mounts (for a quieter ride) and new double-

with mostly minor updates and some engine changes.
A new 267-cid V-8 was introduced
in 1979, though it wasn’t available in
California. A 3.3-liter V-6 was standard.
A new lock-up automatic transmission
arrived in 1980. Computer Command
Control was new in 1981. That year a
3.8-liter V-6 became standard. Options
included 4.4-liter and 5.0-liter V-8s. In
California, a 3.8-liter V-6 was standard
and a 5.0-liter V-8 was optional.
The 1982 El Camino used the Malibu’s new Caprice-style grille and sideby-side dual rectangular headlamps.
The seating and instrument panel were
revised. A “Smart Switch” was added to

The 1980 El Camino
had a very
clean-looking
appearance. “You
won’t believe you’re
in a pickup,” the
sales catalog said.
A striking molding
and paint treatment
was part of the
Conquista package
shown here.
Like the C/K trucks, the El Camino was completely redesigned for 1973. The new style sedan-pickup was
slightly taller and five inches longer. It boasted a few upgrades, including optional swivel bucket seats.
This ‘86 El Camino
is getting to be a
collector’s item.
Only 23,767 were
sold that year,
making survivors
pretty rare. The ’86
models were the
25th El Caminos,
even though the
first ones date
from 1959.

If you collect El Camino sedan-pickups, look for the fancier versions in good condition. This is the 1979 version
of the El Camino Royal Knight — a package that included a wild hood decal and more.
a luxurious vehicle with dual, side-by-side, rectangular
headlights on either side of a cross-hatch grille and long,
narrow parking lights directly below the headlights. The
bumper was a simple, straight-across design. A 5.7-liter
gas V-8 returned and the 5.7-liter diesel V-8 remained
available. The ’84 El Camino actually survived because
its sales kept Chevy ahead of Ford as America’s highestvolume producer of trucks.
The 1985 El Camino received a new 4.3-liter V-6 and
a new instrument panel was added in 1986, but these
changes didn’t improve its sales figures. By this time, the
sales of Chevrolet’s new S-10 compact pickup truck were
taking a toll on the El Camino, as buyers preferred the
S-10’s wider range of capabilities.

The 1987 El Camino catalog promised the utility of a
pickup with the beauty of a Sport Coupe, but this combination was no longer in demand. Only 15,589 were made.
After a few hundred more were built in the first four
months of 1988, the El Camino was dropped.
Today there’s speculation that GM might once again
offer an El Camino in the not too distant future. This new
El Camino would be based on GM’s new Zeta rear-wheeldrive platform that serves as the platform for Holden
Commodore Utes in Australia. It’s actually the same vehicle architecture that will be used for the retro-styled 2009
Camaro. Strangely enough, this good-looking design proposal is like a revival of the Australian Ute and the El
Camino all in one!

As far as Lee Abrams knows,
he and his twin brother Gary
are the only guys goofy enough
to ever turn a 1954 KaiserDarrin into a full-blown drag
car. In fact, they’ve done it
twice. The first time around
came back in the early 1960s,
when the teenagers somehow
talked their dad into letting them by a battered Darrin for the princely sum of
$150. The second time came many years later, when Lee discovered the faded
hulk of a race car residing in Florida and got a chance to buy it back.

PICK OF
THE WEEK
Old Cars Weekly
What’s the best advice you ever got from dear ol’ Dad about cars?
Ilene Letterman Hargis Check all the fluids and check oil, before
starting car. My dad taught me, so I wouldn’t get ripped off. Take
care of your car and it will take care of you.
John E. Waddell This was in the 1970s. My dad cautioned against
buying the elderly luxury cars I loved: “There is nothing older than
an old luxury car.” Horrors of old electrical components drove that
comment!
Scott Mosher If you make things tough for your car, your car will
make things tough for you.

Standard Catalog of
American Cars 1805-1942
The “Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942” is back
by popular demand. Considered
the “most extensive automotive
research ever assembled, compiled by the hobby’s preeminent
historians,” authors Beverly Rae
Kimes and Henry Austin Clark Jr.,
the 1,600-page masterpiece is a
must-have for any collector, car
buff or automotive historian.
Gary Pillette You bought it.
Jonathan C. Blank When you scrape your knuckles just rub the
grease in it, you don’t have time to clean up and get a Band-Aid.
Bill Bamberger Never lend your car or your comb.
Mike Hawkins Feed it and pay attention to it and it’ll be your
friend for a long time.
Diane Mason Always glance at your tires, and raise that hood
every week (I do it every Sunday) and check the oil, the belts, the
radiator fluid, etc.
Russel Harold Stay FAR away from Fords!!!!
Bryan Short Take your time and do it right the first time or
you’re working for free and it builds your rep as a mechanic!
Ron Moerland Drive a Cadillac!!
