Expert Centre for Chemical Risk Management

Part of ArboUnie

ArboUnie is the largest health and safety consultancy
organization in the Netherlands: 1200 employees

Expert centre of chemical risk management: main goal
translation between science and practical use.

We introduced PIMEX in the Netherlands in 2002 (method
developed in Sweden: Prof. G. Rosén)
3
PIMEX films

PIMEX has been a very successful tool in risk communication
in the Netherlands

More than 150 Dutch films FREE available
www.arboportaal.nl, www.ects.nl
4

Used by Dutch government and many industry organizations

Individual companies

Educational purposes (Training cd, e-learning)

Control banding tools (e.g. Stoffenmanager)

What is PIMEX
8
What is PIMEX?

PIxture Mix EXposure

Video Exposure Monitoring
9
A picture is worth a thousand
words !
What is needed?
1)
A digital camera
2)
A computer
3)
Video mixing software (PIMEX)
4)
A lot of enthusiasm
5)
An direct readable instrument
10
What to do before you start making a PIMEX
movie
1)
Write an exact script (with camera positions)
2)
Get permission from the company (for use movie)
3)
Explain the company what you exactly want to shoot
4)
Clean up the environment around your set
5)
Inspection to prevent wrong images in back ground
6)
Get permission from all the workers visible
7)
Instruction for the worker performing the operation (some
times use an actor)
8)
Make at least 5 different takes
11
This is a simple result !

PIMEX videos and Arbocatalogues







Best practices in an Arbocatalogue are the new law for a sector
It is difficult for workers to read and understand instructions and to
change behaviour
Pimex is ideal to show best practices and convince workers
Pimex movies are easy to use in toolbox meetings
Images root in the memory better than words
Pimex movies are supported with fact sheets with the same images
and messages
Workers recognise their own situation
14
PIMEX movies are helpful to teach best practices

It is usually very difficult for workers to understand exposure

It is also difficult to understand the effect of control measures

Workers are not easily convinced that control measures are a real
improvement

The Pimex movie visualizes in a simple way what actually happens

They are convincing (representation of own situation)

The movies are short, to keep attention

The movies can be repeated or stopped to give a better understanding
