THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS OF TEURLINGS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS From Our Principal... A s Catholics, Lent is our great retreat. It is the time during which we reflect on our baptismal commitment and make changes where needed. I would encourage you, in this season of Lent, to spend time as a family to pray, play, and work together. We budgeted to accept 210 freshmen students for the 2015-2016 school year. To guarantee your child’s enrollment, it is important to participate in the online registration process which will end March 6 th. If you do not register by that date, you will lose your child’s spot. Family situations change and those students on the wait list may have the opportunity to be enrolled. We have many things to celebrate as a school community. The Rebel Cheerleaders won the National Game Day Championship at the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship. The Rebel Revue dance team competed in the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando and placed 6 th in the nation in Hip-Hop and 9th in Jazz. The Rebel Wrestling team was Division II State Champions for the third consecutive year. The girls’ soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals and the boys to the regionals. The girls’ basketball teams advanced to the Bi-District round of the state playoffs and the boys are entering the playoffs on Friday, February 27 th. The recent production of “Beauty and the Beast” was well attended and was one of the best performances ever produced at TCH. Over fifty students and teachers traveled to Puerto Rico to participate in a mission trip and they did us all proud. And finally, our own Mrs. Rose Andrus was presented the Heart of the Program Award by the Diocesan Food & Nutrition Services, indicative of the outstanding cafeteria worker of the year. On March 18th, at 12:00 p.m., we will celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students with the annual Academic Pep Rally. Join us in the Rebel Dome as the Rebels celebrate “All About Them Grades!” There will be a hit parade of special guests bringing their talents to the Rebel Dome. We begin each Monday during the season of Lent with a student initiated spiritual observance of the meaning of Lent. This journey will take us to the student re-enactment of the Passion of our Lord at sunrise on Holy Thursday. We have so much for which to be grateful. The lessons in our Christian life that we pass on as a school run much deeper than, “What did you give up for Lent?” nd The Class of 2015, as of March 2 , will have thirty-seven school days remaining at Teurlings Catholic. This has been a special class, and it is our hope they finish with conviction and effort. The Class of 2015 has adopted the “Make a Wish” Foundation as their Lenten charity, another example of their strong Catholic values. Leaders of Distinction Chancellor Rev. That’s not a rhetorical question, but one I hear in various forms in most of my conferences with parents. My honest answer? I really don’t know about your particular student, but in most cases, I would say, emphatically, not without help and guidance from the parent. There really is no secret formula for parenting a high school student and I am not suggesting that you all become what education circles have dubbed “helicopter parents” – those who hover over their student’s every move. However, I do find that most successful students have parents who monitor and offer guidance. Those parents know when major assignments are due in all classes. Those parents check RenWeb once a week or so and know if the student has not completed assignments or failed a test. Those parents do spot check notebooks and homework, to make sure notes are there and homework is completed. Those same parents keep a master schedule and know where everyone has to be every day after school so that decisions can be made to benefit the student’s success in school as easily as success on the baseball diamond, the tennis court, the softball field or the track at this time of year. Those successful parents encourage the student to set aside study time and help the student plan for long-term assignments. Those parents also show the student some “tough love” when necessary, limiting access to vehicles, cell phones, computers, and weeknight and weekend social activities when those interfere with the student’s academic progress. By now, you can see where I am going – successful parents don’t hover or smother, they let their students work out minor issues and problems on their own, but they monitor, provide guidance, love, understanding and correction as necessary, and are PARENTS. After 27 years in education, I can guarantee you that is the secret formula. ASPIRE TESTING SCORES Aspire scores for the 9th-10th grades have finally all been received. We are in the process of printing the score reports (5 pages in length for each) and will send those home by the end of the second week in March. Overall, our students did well, despite the new format of the test. Both our 9th and 10th graders scored above the national average in all subjects – and in English our 9th graders scored above the 10th grade average. I will attach a guide to reading the scores when they are sent home, but so you know what to expect: ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ Each student will receive a raw score in English, Math, Science, and Reading. Each student will receive a predicted ACT score range in all four subject areas, as well as composite. Don’t focus on the high or low prediction, but rather look in the middle. If the predicted score in English is 21-26, I would take that as a predicted 2324 that could be lower if the student does not improve and higher if the student takes challenging courses and does all the work. Each student will also be rated at their current college-readiness level. I think that is the area I was most excited about when I viewed the scores, as 83% of both our 9th and 10th graders are deemed college-ready in English. That is fantastic. While standardized test scores have their purpose (to let me know how our curriculum is doing and to let you know how your student is doing in comparison to national norms), remember that scores are NOT life and death. I have seen students with fantastic scores bomb out in college because intelligence does not always equate to achievement. And, finally, remember that with hard work and diligence, any score can be improved, so a low score in 9th grade does not mean your student will not get into college. If you have any questions about the scores or how your student can improve, you can email me at [email protected] or speak with one of our guidance counselors. 3 MARCH, 2015 Congratulations to all who will be honored at the Academic Pep Rally! 12th Grade Principal's Award Hannah Arnaud Anne Barry Barron Bellard Brannon Broussard Katie Broussard Shelby Carrier Julia Daigle Katie Douet Lindsey Hargrave Emily Hawkins Dante' Hebert Blake Hightower Elizabeth Latiolais Kynnedie Maloz Kelsie Melancon Madison Proctor Emily Robichaux Paige Robichaux Alida Robin Patrick Roesch Kelsi Stringer Sydni Talley Cole Weber Red Award Zack Ashy John-Michael Bellard Jill Boudreaux Tanner Cordick Ethan Domingue Tucker Dunand Juliana Gerami Haven Gerstenlauer Kristen Hamilton Rachael Hill Raya Jacob Trey Laviolette Logan Myers Ashlin Naquin Ali Olivier Gavin Royer Jason Thibodeaux Monique Touchet Gerard Viator White Award Brandon Batiste Dylan Batiste Lauren Bourque Alyssa Breaux Jae'lan Broussard Hannah Broussard Christen Calandra Kavanaugh Danenberg Coleton Dartez Ryan Delhomme Kailyn Doiron Danielle Dupuis Kenneth Elliott Bailey Fils Jarrod Gardiner Madi Guidry Camille Guillory Dakota Hebert Jordin Jacob Tristan Lee Ali Limberg Michael McBride Tanner Peltier Charley Prejean Grant Ray Gunner Rester Alyssa Richard Brennan Riche' Luke Stiles Kiley Thibodeaux Austin Thompson Matthew Trahan Alex Walters Cade Wyble Blue Award Natalye Alfred Beau Blanchard Caleb Lasseigne Seth Sonnier th 11 Grade Principal's Award Bailey Broussard Claire Champagne Elizabeth Heintz Evan Huesers Hannah Istre Bryce LaFleur Lani Landry Sydney Manuel Madi Miller Neil Sand Hadley Smith Cody Stelly Perry Young Red Award Brayden Blanchard Josh Broussard Gabbi Caillier Faith Dirk Kenzie Dupont Noah Harris Allyson Huval Jasmine Mitchell Emma Morgan Hanna Poche' Kynan Sonnier Brett Weber Ashton Whaley Morgan Wimberley White Award Sydney Branch Brennan Burch Kaitlyn Camel Eliana Carrier Kaede Collette Karrigan Danenberg Olivia Feucht Ian Fontenot Patrick Fontenot Gabrielle Fortier Luke Gossen Mari-Catherine Guidry Harli Jacob Jacob Mathews Daniel McNair Christina Mitchell Casey Potts Connor Richard Jacob Richard Orlando Richard Camryn Romero Hailie Savoie Maddy Scrantz Samantha Signorelli Alayna Sonnier Allison Stephens Connor Stickley Alyssa Taranto Landon Taylor Mallori Taylor Zach Trahan Matthew Viator Blue Award Jaylin Broussard Chaney Dodge Isabelle Dominique Jonathon Fontenot Abbey Frederick Hannah Guidry Zack Guidry Matthew McMillan Brennan Pratt Allie Reed 10th Grade Principal's Award Brooke Badeaux Emily Buller Greta Collet Trey Dickinson Julia Guilbeau Hunter Harrington Madison Judice Summer Landry Noah LaPorte Sarah LeBlanc Katie McKenzie Courtlin Naquin Chelsea Nowell Ty Theriot Red Award Dru Castex Abby Danos Brayton Hammes Brooks Hebert Rafael Hernandez Jill Johnson Maddison Knott Cody Landry Hannah Laviolette Conner Meche Meagan Ortego 4 White Award Lidia Alcala Tyler Batiste Hannah Blakely Garrett Boudreaux Brooke Bourgeois Emily Bourque Colleen Cahanin Remi Camel Hayden Cantrelle Elizabeth Comeaux Ashley Daigle Ethan Eddy Sean Gillis Noah Gothreaux Courtney Granger Sara Gravouia Holland Griffin Kenedi Habetz Ana Hackett Brant Hanks Victoria Lawyer Trent LeBlanc Keylon Ledet Caleb Lee Jadyn Lewis Caroline Lormand Trey Menuet Konnor Miller Lauren Neumeyer Keely Provost Abbi Ray Brette Reaux Sophie Salopek Addison Thibodeaux Lucy Toups Mattie Trahan Kristen Travasos Jamie Villagomez Christian Whaley Blue Award Kaylie Darbonne Conrad Frey Dylan Friloux Josh Goulas Hollie James Jansen Lormand Evan Mire Maci Moreau Kade Sonnier Hayley Thibodeaux Nicholas Zeek 9th Grade Principal's Award Wesley Blazek Sophia Brazda Sarah Broussard Alex Domingue Kaitlin Guidry Maddie Guidry Olivia Guidry Sierra Guilbeau Rani Hebert Reyna Houston Mina-Marie Juneau Lindsey Kelly Evan Kidder Ashley Latiolais Nick LeBlanc Peyton McCarley Abby Miller Sarah Miller Hailey Prevost Kelli Prilliman Kaylie Taylor Red Award Michael Boudreaux Lilly Chapman Grant Clark Kammi Danenberg Morganne Ned Kailey Thibodeau White Award Troie Acker Sarah Blakely Carson Blanchard Christopher Booker Isaac Boulanger Reed Broussard Callie Cormier Ben Daspit Kanin Dodge Trevor Dupre Alex Gregory Madison Grossie Callie Landry Dylan Langlinais Jean-Paul LeBlanc Lorin Martin Cole Newland Sydney Olivier Logan Quebodeaux Gabby Sonnier Noelle Stephens Taylor Stutes Alexis Thibodeaux Lizzie Trouard Britney Young Blue Award Reese Albert Adrianna Anderson Madison Baudoin Caroline Broussard Olivia Cunningham Sam Dunand Lauren Fuselier Zander Garber GiGi Gibson Chloe Hamilton Hannah Johnson Konnor Knight Beau LeBlanc Bryant Masson Brian Metoyer Blake Theriot Brett Trahan Lucas Walls MARCH, 2015 This column is designed to recognize the accomplishments of our students in the areas of academics, athletics, and extra -curricular activities at school or around the community. Missionaries stayed at a mission house called Casa Cristo in the mountains of Buenos Aguas and ministered to those in need at an elderly day center and orphanage. The group worked hard cleaning, painting, hauling, organizing, and doing yard work wherever help was needed. In addition to much work and prayer, we were able to explore the beauty of the Puerto Rican rainforest, beaches, and Old San Juan. The trip was a powerful and memorable experience that will remain in our hearts forever! John 12:26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also.
