It’s Almost Time for the Family Reunion!

Rector #204 As I write today in
anticipation of Cursillo 204, I
can’t help but smile
remembering my own Cursillo
#144, September of 2004. My
bag(s!) were packed, had plenty
of snacks and that stack of
magazines I had been meaning
to read. I was all set for my trip
to “Church Camp”. My only
other camp experience was from years ago when I was a girl
scout. I must say, I wasn’t looking forward to making another
arts and crafts thingy with sticks, yarn, and that plastic
lacing/braiding stuff. But, I knew I could whip mine out in
no time and get back to those magazines! Ha Ha!
Moving right along…
My hobby is Genealogy. Tracing our roots, discovering
family history, getting to know those who came before usthese are things I truly enjoy doing. I love to open my
ancestry.com account to my family tree and see those little
“shaky leaf” hints and discover where that individual belongs.
It’s nice to know where we came from, but it’s also a good
thing to know where we’re going. Incorporating our past into
our present helps define who we are today. Finding members
of my earthly family has been fun, but, (continued on page 2)
Head Cha’s Reflection - Keep the Faith
Vicki Poellnitz, Head Cha #204 This year marks the 20th anniversary of my Cursillo and living in the 4th day.
Hank and I attended Cursillo 101 in March 1996. Twenty years is a long time. Twenty years is also only
scratching the surface of what is to come. We all know “the best is yet to come”, but how do we get to the best
part? How will Cursillo 204 be the best ever for the pilgrims? Prayer, faith, and hard work, but mostly faith. I
discovered this description from the national 4th Day Magazine: Faith is not a promise that everything is going to
be alright, faith is the promise that no matter how things turn out, with Christ at our center, we will be alright.
It will be alright. Twenty-sixteen will be the year I have the honor to serve as Head Cha for the first time − God
willing, and with the consent of the Secretariat. It is a position that I prayerfully and (continued on page 2)

truly doesn’t compare to finding members of my spiritual
family. We are all members of the Family of God. We’re a
beautiful blended family, each of us a leaf on our family tree.
It’s where we belong!
humbly considered and accepted. Not
because I think I can easily handle what
many consider the hardest job of the
weekend, but because of faith, prayer, and
trust in Cursillo, in the process of it all. It
has taken 20 years, and serving on quite a
few Cursillo weekends, to prepare for this
role. And when Cursillo 204 lets go and lets
God, it will be all right. We will be alright!
Cursillo 204 is dedicated to Saint Anne. We don’t know much
about her, but we do know that she was the mother of Mary
and the grandmother of Jesus. Yes! Jesus’ Meemaw! Talk
about family history! In honor of Saint Anne and all things
“family history”, we have taken the liberty of modifying a
portion of an age old favorite as our theme song. Please feel
free to sing along!

As we prepare to welcome our new Cursillo family members
into the circle, into our family tree, we ask for your prayers that
they may be blessed beyond measure and truly know the Spirit
of the Lord is in our midst. Those new Pilgrims’ names will be
written in the family bible (also known as the Cursillo register),
as a record for those who will come after us. And we’ll love
them and take care of them, because that’s what family does for
each other, just like our Heavenly Father takes care of us.
We can’t wait to see you at the Family Reunion! Y’all come!

DIOCESAN ULTREYA!
Save the Date - February 3-5, 2017
On a Monday morning four moms are late for reunion
group. We rush in after dropping off kids and scan the
crowd of twentysomethings in skinny jeans for a table
because we meet in the hippest coffee shop in
Auburn. The table, like the jeans, is tiny and very
close to other tiny tables such that we struggle to pull
a chair out without hitting a vintage leather bookbag.
We get settled, do some some catching up, and then
leaning into the table and dropping our voices to a
near whisper we invoke the Holy Spirit and spend the
next hour sharing our personal piety, study and
action. In the midst of a crowded coffee shop we
share our successes and failures and witness to the
love of Jesus Christ.
Leaving the coffee shop on Mondays feels like a
reset. It’s another chance to go out in the world and
live a life of love and grace. But here’s the thing, this
Cursillo movement, this Jesus thing is bigger than my
experience of kindness and community. Once you’ve
experienced this, the love of Christ, the community of
the Church, the excitement of Cursillo, you want
everybody to have that experience. Jesus was on to
something with the whole “ends of the earth” thing.
The word for sharing our experience of the Gospel
is: ... shh, evangelism. Which can be a dirty word, or
at least a scary word to us sometimes. So, with the
help of our clergy, Jack Alvey (St. Paul’s, Selma),
Deborah Leighton (Church of the Advent,
Birmingham) and Jamie McAdams (Grace, Cullman),
we’re going to worship, have fun, pray, and spend
some time talking about evangelism, Christian action,
or how we share what we’ve experienced with our
families, communities, and the world.
Registration opens at the publication of the October
Vivencia - registration form and details will be
included. Don’t dilly dally! It fills up fast! Join us this
ultreya as we find rest and renewal and leave to share
the gospel as a bunch of fools for Christ! Questions?

FIND A FUN WAY TO HELP CURSILLO!
Earlier this summer, Billy and Mollie Barrett hosted The
Clif Dixon Memorial Benefit Shuffleboard Tournament and
invited several Cursillo couples from the Lake Martin area
to compete in this inaugural event.
Taking place on the Barrett’s official shuffleboard courts on
the shores of Lake Martin, the group raised more than
$1,200 for Cursillo in Alabama, primarily through the entry
fees and selling VIP spectator seating. In addition to the
wonderful food and beverage, the participants enjoyed some
pretty tough (and occasionally heated) competition!
And, all the while, raising enough money for the Lake
Martin National Shuffleboard Club (newly formed just for
this event) to become a member in good standing of the La
Sociedad Sustentador.
