Off The Racquet The American Polocrosse Association; P.O. Box 158, Bonneau, SC 29431 The Official Publication Of the American Polocrosse Association www.americanpolocrosse.org January 2008 ELECTION RESULTS: Newly elected Board Members: Vice President: Jim Byrd Secretary: Laura Humphreys Board At Large: Jessica Lovelace and Kiki Pantaze Mountain Zone Rep: Betsy Lovelace Western Zone Rep: Wayne Cooper. Congratulations to all those who ran and were ready to work on the Board. Members, these are your elected representatives, so please do not hesitate to let the Board know what you want and be ready to help! PRESIDENT’S LETTER NICK CHEESMAN HAPPY NEW YEAR! Firstly, I would like to thank the board members who served throughout the 2006 and 2007 calendar years. You all did a tremendous job and have continued to support those of us who took office this past year. Audrey Schmidt, I would personally like to thank you for all of the time and energy that you have spent working with me on current and past issues. Your enthusiasm and energy are unparalleled and we appreciate what you have done for the APA. Secondly, congratulations to the board members who were recently voted in for the 2008 and 2009 calendar years. We have a little bit of work and a lot of fun scheduled for the upcoming months so I look forward to working with all you. Thirdly, it was with amazing pleasure that we announced the winner for the 2007 Presidential Scholarship - - Rahul Desai. A check in the amount of $2,500 will be paid to Clemson University where Rahul is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Science. Rahul was raised in Zimbabwe and immigrated to the US with his family in 2000. He played polocrosse as a child but had taken a long break from the sport before moving to the US where he started playing with Orange County Polocrosse Club in North Carolina. Rahul has progressed tenfold as a player during 2007 and his studies weren't ever left as second priority. Not only has he been on the Dean's List at Clemson University with an average GPA of 3.5; he has also made it onto the President List with an average GPA of 4.0. One of the criteria in the application letter for the scholarship was a two-year plan outlining how that individual would "give back" to the American Polocrosse Association. Rahul submitted a great plan that he will share with you in the next edition of the OTR. Look for him on polocrosse fields and board meetings throughout 2008. We plan to include him on helping us to develop the APA Presidential Scholarship into something that places more money toward continuing education than every before! Enjoy the warm weather in the south and get your winter time polocrosse fix at the upcoming tournament in Florida hosted by the Good Times Polocrosse Club! Safe Playing in 2008! Nick Cheesman CLUBS: Remember that your tournament is not officially sanctioned until you have sent in your sanctioning form and sanctioning fee. All current clubs have been sent a form by email and the form can also be found on the APA website. Tournaments must be sanctioned 60 days ahead of the tournament date. New Year’s Presidential Scholarship Play Day The Hill Country New Year’s Presidential Scholarship Play Day was a lot of fun. We had beautiful weather, bright sun and cold temperatures. We had players who came in from Pennsylvania and Maryland as well as the usuals from North Texas, Houston, Coupland, Taylor and Hunt. The Kneeses from Hunt had the most family entries with Kim and Summer playing together and Tanner playing with another section. We saw new/green horses and players trying out new horses to them. Because we had players who played only on Sunday, the awards were less traditional. We ignored the results of the games and awarded prizes to the horses that played their positions best: Spot – ridden by Lacey Carter; Retama – ridden by Garret Frattaloni; and Frisco – ridden by Janice Ahrens. Honorable mention needs to go to Houdini – ridden by Renee Thompson who played on Sunday only. Another category was Best Ball carriers: Danielle King, Kiki Pantaze and Tanner Kneese. We awarded prizes for the Best Team Play which was awarded to Clayton Fredrick, Garret Frattaloni and Colton Johnson as well as to Lacey Carter, Wanda Banet and Donna Ellis. Finally, our Sportsmanship Award was given to Wanda Banet. Thanks to all who came out. We raised $530 toward the presidential scholarship fund. CLUB NEWS Lucila and Sophie Cheesman enjoying the dinner Hola from the Abajo Polocrosse Club; we hope this year will bring everyone some great plays. Our club is growing and improving. This year we have some new recruits that are really showing a lot of improvement. The juniors on board have also done really well. Hunter Veit won best number 2 at the 2007 Nationals and his horse Rose won Best C Grade horse at the 2007 Western Regionals. The junior team received 3rd at Nationals and at the Western Regionals our C team won 2nd and 3rd . This year we are striving to set some solid goals to enhance our membership. We are hoping to reach kids through the local 4H group and other horse activities throughout the Valencia County. As a club we are aware that with new players there is a huge learning curve to overcome, fortunately the club is properly equipped with a certified umpire as a coach, Gregg Veit. We would like to congratulate him in receiving the Best A Grade Horse and Best Conditioned A Grade Horse as well as Horse of the Year Award for Brindar De Levilla at the 2007 Nationals in Pinehurst, NC. Off The Racquet 6 NEW COLUMN…..JUST MY OPINION Manny Diemer wants to raise issues that all members have an opinion about. Those who want to respond need only to send it to Laura Humphreys at the OTR, [email protected]. He wrote two so far and they are both here for you to read. JUST MY OPINION…...Manny Diemer “Opinions are like body parts – everyone has them…” Heard that before? OK, me too. If there was a “requirement” that a team had to meet in order to be able to play in the “Championship” bracket at Nationals (all others would be competing in the “Open” For your OTR reading pleasure I am going to go out on a bracket) then the best “teams” would be rewarded. I am limb and express mine in a regular column called, you not talking about an “invitational tournament.” We tried that guessed it – “JUST MY OPINION”. I might even get some before and it was not very successful. There are many of you thinking; agreeing or disagreeing; and, just maybe, ways to do it. I am sure that someone out there has a motivated to write or do something. So what is an opinion great solution… anyway – really? What I really wanted to exdo you? Hey that’s a no-brainer you say – too easy… Its press is my personal view and appraisal (which rests on six players divided into two sections, right? OK. I agree it grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty) that the should be. However… APA should not hold a National Championship Tournament every year. At APA Nationals at least one “team” consisted of just four players. How can that be you ask? Simple, one Have you ever asked yourself why we do this? Call me naïve, but to me the logical exThese are interesting questions to which there are probably tension of that “precedent” is that a “team” could consist of no 100% definitive answers… The World Cup is not held only three players. How could that be you ask? Well, every year. The World Equestrian Games, Pan Am Games, given what was done at Nationals this year as an example, and Olympics are not held every year. That’s a big part of the three players could simply play on both sections. what makes these sporting events special and so important. Sure, many sports hold Championships every year. Aha! Wait. There is always the rule book. Yes, of But they hold true “Championships” that require division course, when in doubt – read the rules. So what does it winners to compete in a formal playoff system for the covsay? In section 9. Teams, the first paragraph, 9.1 states, eted “National Championship Game.” In the APA anyone “A team shall be limited to six on a side, consisting of two can come, no team has to win anything to attend, and the sections of three players in all matches.” Well now that can Nationals are not even at the end of the “season” for most be interpreted in many different ways and it does not preZones. clude any of the “six” being the same player – does it? Read further my friend and you will find that Para 9.3 deIn my opinion, it would be better for the APA, the Zones, fines a team as: “9.3.1 Men’s Team: 6 men”; “9.3.2 and the sport in general if the APA held an open National Women’s Team: 6 women”; “9.3.3 Mixed team: 3 men & 3 Tournament every other year and made the “National women”; and “Open Team: Any combination of men and Championships” part of that Tournament competitive women.” (requiring some achievement by the teams playing). Nationals would be “special” and not just another tourSo does that define it to the point that it is clear that the ney. Most would not want to wait only other reference to what constitutes a team in the rule 8 years for it to be in their Zone. More players would bigContinued on page 6 ger draw in the “off” years. Off The Racquet 7 JUST MY OPINION….continued from page 5 book that I could find, is on page 5 under the title “The Game” where it states in the third paragraph, “A team consists of six players, divided into two sections of three each…” To me, it is clear that the rules and the “Information on the Game” provided to the APA and printed with the permission of the President of the International Polocrosse Council limit a Polocrosse team to six different players and do not allow one or more players to “double up” and play on both of a team’s sections. The intent clearly is to prohibit one or more players playing on both sections of the same team. playing on both of the team’s sections should not be allowed. The APA needs to amend paragraph 9.3 to be more specific about there being 6 different players and prohibit “doubling up”. Without this clarification, the APA could be faced with “polo-like” scenarios where three players simply have someone hand them their second horse and play as the second section of their so called “Polocrosse Team.” Is that what we want? “Opinions are like body parts – everyone has them…” And please remember, it’s “just my opinion.” So, in my opinion, the APA should not allow a team to enter a competition with less than six different players for sanctioned tournament matches.
