Happy Halloween!
The wind is blowing, the pumpkins are glowing and the good will keeps flowing…
The slogan, “Great things happen here” is so true at Randolph. Here’s an exciting review of the GREAT things
that have happened just this month at our school:
“Mr. Dave” wins the LPS GOLDEN APPLE AWARD
Our SACC Supervisor, Dave Bekkala, was selected to receive this award in recognition of his outstanding
contribution of time, talent and effort in support of students, parents and staff of Livonia Public Schools. Mr. Dave
also has a great sense of humor and is known for the innovative and kid-friendly activities he facilitates for the
students enrolled Randolph’s School Aged Childcare Program. Mr. Dave also helps out in the main office by
relieving Mrs. Dodd during lunch time. For more information about Mr. Dave, be sure to read the biography titled
“The Awesome SACC Teacher” included in this edition of The Review.
Donald Petersen Donates $1,000 to The Leader In Me Initiative
Donald E. Petersen, former CEO of Ford Motor Company, has donated $1,000 to Randolph’s Leader In Me initiative
once again this year. We are so very grateful for this generous contribution. Read more about Mr. Petersen on
page 4 of The Review.
3 Point Machine, Inc. Donates to Our Leader In Me Initiative
The owners of 3PMI in Southfield, Michigan, have donated $500 to our school in support of our efforts to bring the
7 Habits of Happy Kids to Randolph staff, students and families. 3PMI is a leading supplier of precision machined
drive trains, power trains and various other complex machined products. This generous contribution will be used
to fund TLIM for our students during the 2014-15 school year. Special thanks to the Johnson family for requesting
this donation on behalf of our school.
“Pink Out” Spirit Day Proves That ‘ Together Is Better ‘!
If you were able to stop by Randolph on Friday, October 17, no doubt you were awestruck by the pervasive
kindness, caring and sentiments of support shown by all students and staff. As a result of our fundraising activities
we were able to raise over $750 to be used in support of a local family coping with the challenges of battling
breast cancer. Special heartfelt thanks go out to all who supported this effort. It was a day filled with opportunities
for students to take initiative, to synergize, and to experience the truth in the statement, ‘together is better’.
PTA’s Fall Fest Brings Lots of Wholesome Family Fun
Thank you! These two simple words cannot express the gratitude felt for our school’s PTA Executive Board and
the many PTA members, as well as numerous relatives, friends, neighbors and community members who worked
on this year’s Fall Fest. It was truly an amazing event with so many kid-friendly games, activities, and
refreshments for all. It was especially fun to see our children enjoying the simple pleasures this fall season brings.
No doubt our princesses, super heroes, and spooky ghouls and goblins will remember the good times for many
years to come! 
Splash Dash Color Run Raises $2,700
The second annual Splash Dash Leader In Me 5K Run was a huge success again this year. Profits from this
“colorful”, fun-filled, team-building event will be also be used in support of our school’s Leader In Me process, so it
was a ‘Win-Win’ for everyone! This race is a unique way for the more adventurous among us, (participants ranged
in age from 4-years-old to 83!), to sharpen their saws with some healthy sunshine and exercise while getting
doused head-to-toe in brilliant colored powder. For photos of the event visit this website (Special thanks to Di Fisk
for the wonderful photography):

Miscellaneous News and Notes:
Stop and Chat During Parent-Teacher Conferences
I invite you to stop by at any time during conference week. For the most part, I’ll be in the main office area so I’m
easily accessible. I enjoy talking with Randolph parents and guardians. Feel free to share an idea, ask a question,
let us know how we’re doing, or just say, “Hi”.
Birthday Lunch with the Principal
I will host a special “Books, Bubbles and Birthdays” celebration during lunch on Monday, November 3, for all
children with August and October birthdays. I love sharing this special time with our Roadrunners. The ‘birthday
bash’ activities include sharing lunch, chewing bubble gum, chosing a special bookmark and laughing together as
we look at funny dog photos and read some zany poems from the book, Loose Leashes.
We’re learning and leading with our best selves at Randolph,
Mrs. Timm
The Awesome SACC Teacher!!!
Lukas and I interviewed Mr. Dave today because we did not know much about him!
We found out that he is married and has two kids.
They are 17 and 20 years old.
Mr. Dave has a dog named Molly.
Mr. Dave’s Favorites:
Food: Salmon
Music: Country
Sports: Hockey and skiing
Travels: He has been to France, Singapore, Mexico, England and Amsterdam.
Games: Othello
Hobbies: Gardening, boating and fishing
His School Years
Mr. Dave’s favorite author was Dr. Seuss when he was in elementary school.
Mr. Dave loved learning math and science when he was young.
Mr. Dave went to Shear Elementary, Thurston High School and University of Michigan. (Go Blue!)
Something Mr. Dave learned about this past year was “how to Skype.”
Once in his life Mr. Dave almost gave up on going to college but he stayed strong and went to the University of
Michigan!
Mr. Dave also wants you to know that he enjoys all holidays with family and friends.
The last thing he told us was that he was closer to retirement then starting his career.
Interviewed by Kayla M. and Lukas D. – Mrs. McDonald’s 4th grade class.
Donald E. Petersen
Donald E. Petersen, retired from Ford Motor Company in February 1990. He served as Chairman of the Board and
Chief Executive Officer of Ford Motor Company February 1, 1985 until his retirement in 1990. In 1989 he was
named the 1989 Chief Executive of the Year. In his spare time he enjoys reading, listening to jazz and has an
extensive mineral collection. Mr. Petersen and his wife reside in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. They have two
children, one granddaughter and two great granddaughters. Education is very important and he believes that a
good education builds the next generation of Leaders.
Mr. Petersen states, “I am glad that Randolph’s Leader In Me Program is doing so well. It is an excellent program
and has had much success throughout the country in building confident and responsible youth and leaders. We
are happy Randolph School is participating in this program.”
One of Mr. Petersen’s favorite quotes is:
“Knowledge will bring you the opportunity to make a difference” (by Claire Fagin)
PARENT INFORMATION
IMPORTANT Information about Late Arrivals/Tardies
We respectfully ask that parents make sure their child/ren arrive at school in time each day. We have two
morning bells, 8:49 a.m. and 8:54 a.m. The 8:49 bell is very important because it signals the time when students
enter the building to unpack their backpacks, turn in homework and notes from home, make their lunch
selections, and organize themselves for the day. It is extremely important for your child to be in line before the
first bell rings so that they are not feeling rushed and/or are missing out on the learning and classroom seat-work
that helps to get the school day off to a smooth and productive start. When the 8:54 a.m. bell rings direct
instruction begins in the classrooms.
Also, we greatly appreciate parent communication and parent involvement; however it is very important parents
refrain from entering the building to assist/watch their children in the morning. Our goal is to build independence
and help our K-4 student leaders to become responsible self-sufficient (as a parent myself, I know this takes lots
of practice:-).
Also, once the day begins and the children have arrived the teacher’s focus is on the students. If you need to
speak to your child’s teacher, please call or email them to set up an appointment at a mutually convenient time.
Thank you in advance for your support of these requests.
Your partners in education,
Mrs. Timm and the Randolph staff
Lunchroom Snack Cart Procedures
Attention Parents: Due to confusion caused when students charge snack cart items to their pre-paid lunch
accounts, we are no longer able to permit students to purchase snacks from the Snack Cart by 'charging' them
unless they have a note from home, or bring 50 cents to school for this purpose.
Thank you- your support is appreciated!
Randolph's Kitchen Crew
We have a large number of items in our lost and found, which have become separated from their owners since the
beginning of this school year. These items will be displayed on tables in or near the
lobby Monday through Friday (November 10-13). Please encourage your child to check for his or her belongings
and feel free to check out the tables when you come for parent teacher conferences.
Items not claimed will be donated to a charitable organization.
Thank you.

Publishing Center
The Randolph Publishing Center is a wonderful PTA sponsored program where students can have
a book published (typed, covered and bound). The teachers submit the student’s work and then the
stories are sent to volunteer typists who type the stories at home. After the completed stories come
back to school they are bound and given back to the students who can illustrate them at school or at
home. This wonderful program cannot exist without volunteer typists.
If you volunteer for the Publishing Center, you will be supplied with templates, instructions and paper.
The only thing that you supply is your time and your printer ink.
This is a great volunteer opportunity if you cannot give time to the school day. If you are interested
in this fantastic program please contact Jenny Ronayne at [email protected].
Thank you for considering this volunteer opportunity!
BOOK SWAP POP
The book swap is a great PTA sponsored monthly event
where your child can come to the book swap at 2:30 recess
and swap out one or two books from home for books from the
swap. They can stay in the room and read during recess or
they can pick out their books and still go out for recess. They
can either keep the books forever or bring them back next
time and swap them for other books. There are so many
books to choose from for all ages and interests. We will also
offer the kids a treat (“pop”) to enjoy when they come to the
swap. Each month will feature a different “pop” such as
popcorn, pop tarts, blow pops, ring pops or popsicles. The book
swap has moved to the motor mom’s room! There is more space for the
kids to have their “pop” and read! In order for us to plan how
many “pops” to get, please fill out the below form and send it
to school with you child. If you have any questions please
contact Jenny Ronayne at [email protected].
PLEASE RETURN THIS PORTION BY MONDAY, NOVEMBER
10TH.

Roadrunners…..are you ready to make a difference??
Youth Making a Difference is a program that encourages and recognizes volunteer efforts by K-12 students.
Would you like to make a difference? At Randolph….We Are Leaders!
We know our Randolph Families are AMAZING VOLUNTEERS! Over three-quarters of our parent
community will volunteer in one way or another over the school year. Let’s pass this amazing social and
communal habit on to our little Leaders. Even our youngest Roadrunners will feel a sense of pride and
excitement by helping out in our community!
Any project that was done between the end of school last year and the beginning of April 2015 can be applied.
Please see the next page for suggestions of projects you can do. Be creative! Do something simple by yourself
or more involved with the help of your family or a group. The hours dedicated to your project is not important,
it is the thought and effort that counts!
Included below is a Commitment Form which needs to be completed and submitted by November 19, 2014.
Send in the commitment form, and once it is received your child will receive an information packet including
guidelines for a poster project. Reminder - the poster and project can be as simple or involved as you would
like. Have fun and show your Randolph Pride!
The best part.......the poster will be used to recognize your activity at the Livonia PTSA Council Celebration in
April at Stevenson High School with Mayor Kirksey and Dr. Liepa!! All participants will be invited. How cool
is that !?!?
If you have any questions please contact our YMAD Chairperson Kim Balhorn at
[email protected].

Parent Lighthouse Team
So far over 40 parents have joined our Parent Lighthouse Team! We wanted to give everyone an
opportunity to get settled into the new school year, but we are ready to help our school and staff with
this wonderful Leadership initiative!
The purpose of the Parent Lighthouse Team is to help work with our Staff on the Franklin Covey The
Leader In Me process at our school. The Leader In Me is already proving to be an excellent
foundation for building Leaders in our school and community! If you are interested in joining the
Parent Lighthouse Team, please contact Melissa Myers at [email protected]. An email will be
sent in mid-November to all members…we will explain the 7 habits training opportunities and classes
that will be offered, a calendar, including 3-4 (optional) meetings through the year, will be discussed,
and volunteer opportunities will be presented. Thank you to all those who are interested in helping
our Leaders grow!
Membership
Thank you to everyone, families and staff, who have joined the PTA! Your membership cards will be
coming home in the next week. A drawing was held at the October PTA Meeting from all those who
joined the PTA before October, and the Morelli Family won a $25 dollar gift certificate! The Morelli’s
have donated their gift certificate to our staff….and the teachers will receive a special snack thanks to
them! Our PTA Members are so awesome!
PTA Meetings
We had a great time at October’s PTA Meeting! We reviewed this year’s calendar (see the Student
Directory for the full list of amazing programs brought to you by Randolph’s PTA), heard updates
from each grade level teachers, tasted some GREAT salsa, and voted on which flavors to offer for our
Super-Bowl-Salsa Fundraiser!
November’s PTA Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 6th, at noon, in the PTA Room. We
hope that those parents unable to attend evening meetings will take advantage of a lunch time
meeting! Lunch will be provided and younger kids are welcome to come, we will have play doh,
coloring, etc., available to keep them busy, and they can sit at the table with you!
