This particular facility was built one year ago. Pipestone Systems has been working with composting for five years and now has them at twothirds of their sow-facilities. In Minnesota, animal composting is an approved disposal method for poultry, sheep, goat and swine carcasses By Steven Swenson “There is an art to composting,” said Willie Langholz of Pipestone Systems as he was describing the carcass disposal facility at the 4,000-sow Rosewood farm north of Pipestone. “If composting is done right there is no smell.” Composting converts’ waste products such as animal carcasses, straw, sawdust and poultry litter into an odorless, inoffensive, generally pathogen-free product that can be used as a fertilizer that works well around rose bushes or tomato plants. Composting is approved in Minnesota as a method for disposal of poultry, sheep, goat and swine carcasses. “It is a good fertilizer,” Langholz said. “It is similar to pig manure. When you test it per ton it’s easy to fertilize with because it’s real similar to the liquid content of pig manure so it does make a very good fertilizer.” Information from the BAH says that on a wet basis, a ton of finished animal compost consists of approximately 1,000 pounds of dry matter, 20 pounds of nitrogen (4 pounds from ammonia), 2 pounds of phosphate and 6 pounds of potash. Composting must be done in accordance with Minnesota Board of Animal Health rules. “Bio-security is important,” Langholz stressed, “and one of the reasons we started composting is to prevent diseases from entering the farm.” The composting facility at Rosewood was built a year ago. One obvious source of potential disease is the rendering truck that goes from farm to farm, Langholz said. “This was a big concern,” he said. “Because you don’t know where it’s been or what kind of dead animals it has or had on it.” Although there are other ways of transporting a disease to the Composting Continued on page 5 Farm Market News July 20, 2009 A Publication Of: Pipestone Publishing Co. 115 2nd St. NE, PO Box 277 Pipestone, MN 56164 Phone: 507-825-3333 Toll Free: 1-800-325-6440 In the Jackson area call 507-847-3771 or 1-800-658-2393 or email [email protected] •Advertising: Paul Lorang [email protected] •News: Debra Fitzgerald [email protected] Tim Soelter PA-C 50860 Email: [email protected] www.pipestonestar.com Holly Kotewa C-FNP Head office: 717 S. Now, embryo transfer stands to do the same from the female’s perspective. Prairie Embryo Transfer, based in Worthington, MN, specializes in providing embryo transfer (ET) services. Technicians Tyler Bullerman and Jim Vierhout travel to farms throughout southwest Minnesota, eastern South Dakota, and northwest Iowa, providing services such as embryo collection and cryopreservation (freezing and storing), education, consultation, and donor and recipient cow selection and care. This series of photos shows the compost material throughout the process. The first step is to put down a base layer of bulk agent, the compost material after the first and second heat cycles. The final material is added after the process is completed. farm, the rendering issue was a big concern for Pipestone Systems. While the facility at Rosewood is only a year old, Pipestone Systems has taken an active approach to using composting as a carcass disposal method. “Our earliest barn we started experimenting with, and I can say experimenting with literally, is about five years,” said Langholz. “When we started there were very few people who knew how to compost. So we’ve learned along the way by trial and error.” He said that their biggest push into composting was about a year and a half ago and now about two- thirds of the Pipestone Systems sow-facilities in Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa use composting. Farmer's Center, Inc. 1308 7th St. SE, East Hwy 30 • Pipestone, MN 56164 Phone: 507-825-3717 Fax: 507-825-2997 Don Ruiter Doug Ruiter 825-4128 825-5640 The principle of ET involves removing a fertilized embryo from the original “donor” cow, and placing it in a second, “recipient” animal. Producers have turned to ET to maximize the reproductive potential of their superior females, as the procedure can enable those good cows to safely produce multiple offspring (multiple embryos implanted into multiple recipients) each year. ET also offers producers a way to import new genetics into their program without actually having to bring new cows into the herd, by utilizing frozen embryos from an outside source. In addition, the procedure enables producers to maximize their use of rare or expensive semen. Prairie ET began serving area cattlemen last year, and business has been steadily growing since then. Embryo transfer is not a new technology; the first recorded ET procedure was performed on rabbits in 1890. However, today’s modern, efficient procedures weren’t developed until the late 1970s and early 1980s. While no surgery is involved, the process does involve quite a bit of timing, finesse, and analysis. The first step in the process is to select quality donor cows, generally the top females in a breeding program. Recipient cows also need to be selected at this time. These “recips” are much more than just incubators. They need to be healthy individuals who calve easily. “Donor cows are responsible for making the quality embryos,” explained Prairie ET’s Bullerman, “but the recipient cows will determine the success of your ET program. They are the ‘make-or-break’ factor.” Once both donors and recipients have been selected, the next step is synchronization of their cycles. Since the embryo will be moving from one individual to the other, the two environments need to be identical in order for the procedure to be a success. This coordination is achieved via both hormone injections and CIDRs (controlled internal drug release devices), vaginal inserts that release hormones over a period of time into the female’s system. Depending on where each individual is in their cycle will determine what hormones, and at what level, they receive. Once all of the individuals’ cycles are in sync, the donor cow is bred. After breeding, they will be given an injection that induces the ovulation of multiple embryos. The recipient animals are monitored for signs of heat. Seven days after they show evidence of a heat cycle, the embryos are recovered from the donor via a flush. Each flush yields three to six fertilized embryos. The embryos are examined under a microscope and “graded” according to their quality (including age, size, color, and stage of development, among other criteria). Embryos that are determined to be of high enough quality are either placed into a recipient or frozen for future implantation. Donor cows are often bred and flushed one or two times. After their final flush, the donors will be allowed to become pregnant and carry the calf to term. Thus, depending on the number of embryos retrieved with each flush, a cow could potentially produce up to twelve embryos for ET in a given year, in addition to carrying her own calf. “ET has done for cows what artificial insemination has done for bulls,” said Bullerman. “It allows us to reproduce high quality cows at a much faster rate.” As a rule, the pregnancy rate from fertilized embryos placed in recipients is 50-60%. The key to achieving a high pregnancy rate is to have healthy recipients on a sound nutritional program. ET is a seasonal procedure in beef cattle. Generally, the process occurs between May 1 and July 15, which is the normal time that beef cows would become pregnant. On the other hand, the reproductive cycle of dairy cows runs throughout the year, with the females calving at all months and then being bred again 60 days later. As a general rule, embryo transfers tend to taper off during the hot months of late July, August, and early September. As the temperature rises, the success rate for the procedure decreases. Bullerman and Vierhout travel to each farm to perform the transfers. Since the cows get to stay in their familiar home environment, there’s no stress from hauling. On-farm work also reduces biosecurity risks, and it is more convenient for the producer. By trial and error, Langholz found that raw wood chips purchased directly from a sawmill was the best material to use because the wood chips still have moisture in them, which is required for the composting process. Langholz said he hauls in about the same amount that’s hauled out on an annual basis. One of the start-up challenges was gauging the proper size for the composting shed. “We worked closely with the University of Minnesota and they helped tremendously with a formula to figure out the right size to build the facility,” he said. “This formula is available to everyone. Lessman Mike and Julie Benson run a sit-down restaurant, fast-food joint, pizza place, coffee shop, catering business, convenience store, gas station, grocery store, car wash and bait and tackle shop. All under one roof. It’s called Benson’s by the Lake in Balaton, and it’s not your ordinary C-store, or restaurant, or … Well, you get the picture. Purchased about a year ago as Di’s Lakeside convenience store, café and gas station, the Bensons renamed the establishment, repainted the walls, restocked the shelves and rethought every aspect of the Highway 14-side business, especially the menu. “We like to try a lot of different things,” Mike Benson said. “We just don’t want it to be the same old stuff every single day. Our daily specials really allow us Mike Benson packages the massive, freshly made cheeseburgers for which Benson’s by the Lake in Balaton has come to be known. Farm Market News photo to mix it up.” by Justin R. Lessman That was evident on a recent day when the kitchen-side wipe board proclaimed “crab cheddar jalapeno bits” and “catfish fillets” as the day’s specials. The eat-in restaurant and side-room coffee shop offer a full breakfast menu, including omelets and the renowned breakfast burrito. Popular lunch items include Benson’s massive cheeseburgers, broasted chicken, pizza, wraps and Benson’s newest offerings — Dashboard Subs. “That’s our own brand of premium subs,” Mike Benson said, adding, “So far, they are very popular.” It’s all available to go, Benson said, though that’s the furthest thing from the minds of his regular gang, who gather for coffee at the same time, same place nearly every day. “It’s fun to have them come around,” Julie Benson said. Aside from their food being available “to go” in the traditional sense, the Bensons also offer full catering services. “We serve family reunions, funerals, community luncheons — any event that needs great food,” Julie Benson said. “People have come to appreciate our home-cooked meals. We make our own soup and pies and people say they can tell the difference.” Also available at Benson’s are a new line of flavored coffees, expanded grocery inventory and a new stock of bait and tackle items. “It’s been an experience and a lot of work,” said Mike Benson, a Balaton High School graduate who returned home last year after a career in corporate management. “But it’s good to be home where we belong, serving our friends, neighbors and community.” Julie Benson, a Balaton native, agreed. “It’s been a learning curve, having never been in this business before,” she said. Langholz suggests working forward from the back of the bin. This layer will insulate the composting material from the outside environment, provide carbon to fuel the composting process and absorb liquids. The carcasses are then placed in a single layer atop the bulking agent one-foot from the wall of the bin and at least six inches apart to allow air circulation and to insulate the carcasses from the environment. The carcasses are then covered with about 12 inches of bulking agent. Water is added to maintain a moisture level of between 45-and50 percent. Carcasses and litter are layered so that a carbon/nitrogen ratio is established between 15:1 and 35:1 (optimal 23:1). Additional carcasses are added in layers following the same steps. The pile is covered with 12 inches of bulking agent to reduce odor and protect against pests once the pile reaches near the top of the bin. Now we farm 1,400 tillable acres of both corn and soybeans, but used to farm around 2,000 acres. We have a few cattle we raise that we take to the butcher shop and we used to do goats, but got out of the goat business last year with our kids out of 4-H. We still do 4-H pigs.” Baumgard was born and raised on the family farm his mother still lives on, which is just threequarters of a mile from where he 916 4th Ave. SW • Pipestone, MN www.pcmchealth.org PCMC 6-09a 507-825-5811 WE BUY CORN JULY 20, 2009 FARM MARKET NEWS – 00 15 Baumgard and his family presently live at 82964 360th Ave. just a few miles south and west of Okabena. “I am from Bettendorf, Iowa,” Jackie Baumgard said. “I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a teaching degree and was hired to teach seventhgrade math and social studies at HLO in Okabena when Brad and I met. I taught until August of 2000 when I went to work for Education Minnesota as a union representative. This July 28, we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary.” The couple has two daughters. Emily, the oldest, just graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall this year with a biology degree. She is presently employed in the personal care field, working with disabled adults. “She loves what she does,” Brad Baumgard said. “She loves taking care of people.” Molly, their youngest, will be a junior at the University of Northern Iowa this fall and is majoring in mass communications. “Emily and I were both in 4-H all 13 years,” Molly said, “from the time we were in the first grade. We raised pigs and goats as 4-H projects. But got into raising goats late, the last four years we were in 4-H. We started with a few dairy goats, but raised mostly meat goats.” “Emily was the one that picked our pig to take to the fair that won grand champion in 2004,” Brad Baumgard said. “She was a state champion in livestock judging and had worked with Jim Nesseth learning how to judge.” The Baumgard girls followed in their father’s footsteps. “I was in 4-H and really enjoyed it. My brother and I were longtime members of 4-H, only we raised cattle as our projects for the fair,” he said. “Emily and Molly were both members of the Lacrosse Loyal Workers 4-H Club.” And Brad still gets a lot of enjoyment out of helping 4-H member Cory Pelzel with his pig projects for the Jackson County Fair. “I’ve been helping Cory for the past five years with his 4-H projects,” he said. “He lives in town and didn’t have a place to raise pigs. He was always helping other kids in 4-H at the county fair move their pigs or even helped cleaning out their pens. One day I went up to him and said, ‘Cory, would you like to show a pig at the fair?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ He went pig shopping with us this year, bought his own pigs and really likes working with them. He comes out every morning now and we walk pigs. He is a good kid. He has been there all along. It has worked out good.” In the 36 years Baumgard has been involved in farming, he has seen a lot of changes in the business. “It used to be we walked beans, then it was riding beans. But now, with today’s chemicals, it is much better. We don’t have to do either anymore,” he said. “And the technology today is much better. The equipment has improved a lot, from climate-controlled cabs to heated seats. But you have to be Continued from page 14 on top of the marketing today. It is very difficult and inputs costs have continued to increase to the point where they are expensive now and cut into your profit margins. I sell most of my soybeans to the bean plant in Brewster and some of my corn goes to the ethanol plant in Heron Lake, as well as some to Cargill.” As for the future of farming, Baumgard sees the number of family farms continuing to decrease. “Corporate farming is what it is going to come to, in my opinion,” he said. “But some of the best parts of farming for me have been working with the family – with our girls, helping walk the pigs as they were growing up, and with my brother, raising cattle when we were kids. Family is the part of farming I’ve enjoyed the most and wanted to pass that on to my children.” Baumgard said he found out his family had been chosen as the county’s farm family of the year only recently. “We found out we had been chosen farm family of the year at a community foundation meeting,” he said. “Mark Fest came up to me and said, ‘You have been nominated to be family farmer of the year and someone will be contacting you.’ I thought, ‘Am I nominated and on a list with other people nominated or what?’ Then we got a letter in the mail saying we had gotten it. My reaction was, ‘Why me?’” The Baumgard family will be recognized on Aug. 2 at the Jackson County Fair as the 2009 Jackson County Farm Family of the Year and on Aug. 6 will be representing Jackson County at FarmFest 2009 in Redwood County. What next? “We’ll put in the animals and bulking agent and fill up the bin and then it will be about 40 days after the last animal goes in,” Langholz said. “The pile will heat up. We like to get it up to about 150 degrees and if we don’t get it up to 150 degrees we aren’t doing something right so then we have to take a look at moisture levels, etc.” Reaching and holding a temperature of 130-to-150 degrees is very important to allow for proper decomposition. Studies have shown that proper composting of animal carcasses will destroy most viruses and bacteria common in livestock operations. Once the first heat cycle finishes, the pile is moved and oxygen introduced for a second heat cycle. After the second heat cycle, the animals have decomposed. If long bones or teeth remain, Langholz said they allow the pile to heat again. The whole process takes between 90-to-100 days, depending upon the size of the carcasses, the pileturning frequency and the ratios of nutrients within the compost pile. Langholz said it’s important that the new material coexist with the composted material, which contains bugs and moisture. Without previously composted material, the bin would need to be started over again. Best time to start composting Animal composting can be started at any time of the year but cooler weather does offer a challenge when getting started. “There are two things that I try to tell everybody,” said Langholz. “The first time you fill all your bins is the biggest challenge; try not to do it in the wintertime. We started three in late fall going into early winter and it was an extreme challenge because it was cold and it’s hard to get that heated up when it is cold.” To solve this problem, he said they brought in turkey litter from the poultry barns that had manure in it and that helped because it was already starting to compost. “It took us five years to get to the point where we feel comfortable with composting,” Langholz stated. “But for us it is a bio-security issue so we decided to go ahead and spend the money.” PEOPLE WHO READ NEWSPAPERS ARE BETTER WRITERS AND SPEAKERS At IsemAN Homes Let us help you with your New Home or Remodeling Project all stock homes reduced for immediate clearance!! ✷ Kitchen ✷ Bathroom ✷ Much, Much More Up to $8,00it0 Tax Cred e for First Tim rs ye Home Bu A.O. Slayton auction center, llc The 2008 Farm Bill reauthorized the Farm Service Agency’s (FSA) Farm Storage Facility Loan Program (FSFL). The program provides lowinterest financing for producers to build or upgrade farm storage and handling facilities. To expedite the FSFL approval process, producers planning to submit an FSFL application to FSA, may request an environmental evaluation of their proposed project at their county FSA office. To comply with the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), FSA must evaluate the potential impacts the proposed structure could have on the environment for FSFL applications. An FSA-850 form must be completed for each FSFL application before the application can be approved. Producers requesting an environmental compliance determination are advised that the FSFL application must be submitted and approved before site preparation and construction can begin on the facility. Applicants will be required to identify the: •Type of structure they wish to construct •Proposed site by marking the location on an aerial photo County offices will not accept requests to complete FSA-850 via telephone. If a producer is unable to visit the office, the request must be submitted in writing and include the necessary information to complete FSA-850. Additional information about initiating a Farm Storage Facility Loan is available at FSA county offices.
