Dancepointe Academy Production 2015 D IRECTOR’S FOREWORD “台上三分钟,台下十年功 (3 minutes of glory on stage, 10 years hard work off the stage).” This Chinese proverb is exceptionally true for Dancepointe Academy (DPA) as we celebrate our 10th year Anniversary. DPA started its journey with a vision that quality dance education should be affordable and available to all children with any physical attributes. For the past decade, our team has worked hard and remain true to our vision to provide a comprehensive curriculum that includes not just accredited examinations but also one that provide performance opportunities for all our students. This year, we have put together a series of 3 concerts at Kallang Theatre for our team and students to once again shine on stage with their artistic and fresh views from past choreographies. Mr. Lance Tang & Ms. Lena Foo Directors of Dancepointe Education Group several accolades such as Overall Champions in the Barcelona Grand Prix Dance Competition and the several first positions in The Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD) Dance competition. This Special Program, which includes an overseas exchange, aims to train our students in various dance genres andcompetition piece by award winner choreographers. With a team of strong and committed full time teachers, we have grown steadily over the years and developed three distinctive dance brand names that have won both local and international recognition. There are namely Dancepointe™ (The School of Classical Ballet & Jazz), Dance Factory™ (The Performing School for Hip Hop & K-Pop) and dACADEMY™ (The School of Contemporary Dance). In 2013, we took a leap of faith with the support from International Enterprise Singapore (IES) to start our first Dance School in China. In 2015, they won 25 Dancepointe Academy Production 2015 T HE STORY On a seemingly normal day, the dancers gather before as usual before heading up to the studio for ballet class. On this very day, however, they decided to relook at videos of past performances which all of them had danced in, before class starts. By a stroke of sheer coincidence, it turns out that all the dancers gathered together, had all been lead dancers in the performances at one point or another in the past 10 years of Dancepointe’s existence! There were the lead characters from Realm (2006), Magical Wonders (2008), Nutcracker (2011), Repertoire (2012), Alice in Wonderland (2013), and The Enchanted Tale (2014). 45 As the dancers take the lift to head up to class innocently, whilst still reminiscing about the past, unknown to them, the reminiscing had magically unlocked a time turning ability of the lift, to bring the dancers back to the major events of their dance lives with Dancepointe Academy. “Turning Hands of Time” will take us down a walk at memory lane with the dancers, as they show us a glimpse of their journey with Dancepointe the past 10 years… Dancepointe Academy Production 2015 T HE LEADS LEANE LIM RACHEL TOH SHI HAN MABEL YAP YU XUAN I started my ballet training at a tender age of four under Ms Lena Foo. At Dancepointe, I had achieved straight Distinctions for myRoyal Academy Of Dance (RAD) Graded to Advanced 2. While studying at School Of The Arts Singapore, I received a scholarship to pursue my passion for dance at Central School Of Ballet (CSB) in London. Dancepointe had also extended a bursary for my studies. I am happy to have recently graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Professional Dance and Performance. This year, I return as alumni to perform and revive the roles as Clara in ‘Nutcracker’ (2012) and Princess Ariel in ‘The Repertoire’ (2013) for Dancepointe’s 10th Anniversary Concert, and I look back on how Dancepointe has grown together with me tremendously through these years. I have been with Dancepointe since the birth of its first branch at Taman Jurong CC. Walking the journey with Dancepointe to where it is today has been a magical journey so far, with all of us just like a family with the passion to dance. 10 years in Dancepointe is nothing short of amazing. I have completed my RAD Ballet training under Ms Lena Foo and have also explored many other genres such as Jazz and Contemporary. Throughout these years, the greatest takeaway is the lifelong friendships that I have forged with my ballet mates. Not only have I grown as a dancer through examinations, productions and competitions; I was given many teaching opportunities as well. I would love to share my experiences and passion and I hope to ignite the love for dance in the younger generation some day. I am thankful to Dancepointe for believing in me and my ability, hence supporting me in chasing my dreams to be a dance instructor and choreographer. “To touch, to move, to inspire, this is a true gift of dance.” ~ Aubrey Lynch GOH JIA HUI ANTHEA CHUA LYNN THONG PUI CI, TERESA JOSEPHINE Dance has been part of my life for years. I started ballet at the age of 5, and was under Ms Lena Foo’s guidance for the past 12 years. In Dancepointe, opportunities have been given to expose myself to various types of dance, such as jazz and contemporary. In addition, I was given chances to compete in Singapore, Perth, Barcelona and exchange programme to London. Yearning to learn more and excel in life, Miss Foo offered me an assistant teaching position in the school. Assisting in dance classes sparked my interest in dance education. Dancepointe has inspired my love for teaching. Since joining Dancepointe in 2014, the school has given me the opportunities to continue my passion for dance. I have nothing but fond memories and experiences to gain while challenging myself in this wonderful artform together with my teachers and friends. Having the chance to be a part in the last concert, The Enchanted Tale 2015, was something that I will not forget. Not only have I made valuable friendships during the process, I had great fun revisiting my childhood memories. Dancepointe gave me the opportunity to work with different teachers and to explore a completely new variety of dance styles since I joined in 2014. I am grateful for having the opportunities to compete in the Asia-Pacific CSTD competition 2014, RAD Challange 2015 and perform in the annual concert. Though training sessions are never easy, it pushed us to persevere and to endeavour beyond our limits. The teachers here at Dancepointe are always willing to help us improve and push us to maximise our potential. Dance has been a great part of my life since the age of 3 and I’m glad I decided to pursue dance as a career for me. Besides, attaining my RAD teaching certificate under Ms Lena Foo, I have achieved various awards in International and Singapore dance competitions. 5 Dancepointe Academy Production 2015 T HE LEADS JULIANNE HEE PRISCILLA CHONG KAI XUAN JAMES SHEN DONGHAN Looking back now, I have been a student of Dancepointe since the beginning days. Throughout the years as a student and dancer here, there was never a lack of opportunities for me to grab hold of to express myself, especially through the different genres of dance which are offered to all. Not to mention, the various platforms like year-end concerts and overseas dance immersion programs available for me to be a part of to gain exposure and better myself physically and mentally. Furthermore, this year marks Dancepointe’s 10th year anniversary and I am grateful to be a part of this joyous event as I take a trip down memory lane with my fellow dance mates and my teacher, Ms Lena Foo. I am 12 this year and started dancing at Dancepointe at the age of 3. Dancepointe is my second home and I’m constantly inspired by many seniors and teachers. I hope, I will be as amazing as them. I am really glad that i had the opportunity to play as one of the lead performer for this year, ‘Turning Hands Of Time’ concert. As a Dancepointe student,i have learnt how to responsibly carry out myself and act as a person and i have learnt the importance of friendship and team bonding. Lastly,i want to thank the teachers,especially Ms Lena Foo, who guided me through my incredible journey in Dancepointe. I have been dancing under the tutelage of Ms Lena Foo in Dancepointe since i was 5 years old. During my years in Dancepointe, I had participated in two of Dancepointe’s major concerts such as Magical Wonders, where I play as the role of Puss in Boots, as well as The Nutcracker where I was Claire’s younger brother, Fritz. This year, I am proud to be part of Dancepointe’s 10th Anniversary, “Turning Hands of Time”, where I will be embarking on a magical journey to find true love as Puss in Boots. JAMIE HWANG I started my ballet training under Ms. Tan Eng Ai and further my contemporary under the tutelage of renowned choreographer, Mr Dan Kwoh, for the past 4 years. I was selected to be in the pioneer batch of dTEAM, the performance team of dACADEMY (Contemporary faculty of Dancepointe Academy). During my experience as a dTEAM dancer, Dancepointe Academy has given me much opportunities and support in my pursuit for performances and competitions on both local and international stages such as Dancepointe’s Annual Concerts, Sprouts 2015, Barcelona Dance Grand Prix Europe 2015 and the 17th CSTD Asia Pacific Dance Competition 2015. 65 NG GUANG LIANG SHAN DEL VECCHIO With a passion for dance, I have been dancing under the tutelage of renowned choreographer, Mr Dan Kwoh, for the past 5 years. I am proud to be the pioneer batch of dTEAM, the performance team of dACADEMY (Contemporary faculty of Dancepointe Academy). Dancepointe Academy has given me much support in my pursuit of choreography and performance; contributing to clinching several awards with the dTEAM dancers. Apart from that, I was given full support by Dancepointe Academy to partake in the Annual Young Choreographer Programme, Sprouts 2015, and my piece was chosen to compete on the international stage of Dance Grand Prix Europe 2015. I started my first experience with Dancepointe in 2013. Being an outstanding dancer, I was immediately invited to join the annual dance production “Alice in Wonderland 2013”. As a mentor, Ms Lena Foo hopes to provide bigger platform for me to continue my growth as a dancer. She later on assisted me in my application for Singapore Dance Theatre. I was accepted for the 2 years Apprentice Dancer Programme and I am happy that with this opportunity and support I am finally accepted as an Artist in Singapore Dance Theatre for 2016. Dancepointe Academy Production 2015 S YNOPSIS OF ACT 1 The Realm of Dance 2006 Life is like a picturesque journey that begins with a Dream. The Little Girl whom we see today - her life, her aspirations and her long road to success. For her, her life revolves around dance, but she has never thought she will get her chance to learn Ballet, because her family has only considered dancing as a mere form of leisure for rich families, and not possibly a precious part of their life. She sees the amount of school homework that she has and knows the all-too-common mantra that success in school means success in the corporate world. She dreams of the little ballet shoes and dancing in them. She quietly watches the TV of various dance genres. Hey wait a min! The Little Girl is bemused to realize that even her Mum, is captivated by the exhilaration of dance. Finally, the Little Girl’s passion to the art of dance convinces her Mum to allow her to pursue her dreams. For the first time, she is entering The Realm of Dance. The Magical Wonders 2008 Once upon a time, there lived an unmarried prince at Magical Wonderland. He was not like any other princes who wear shining armors but was ugly, fat and green! He was none other than Shrek the ogre! Shrek was never loved, and he decided to find and fight for his true love with the help of Puss in Boots and Puss in Heels! They travelled to different lands In Magical Wonderland such as Adventureland, Fantasyland and Winterland to widely search of princesses worthy of Shrek’s love. So who will be the true love for Shrek and live “Happily Ever After” with him in the Main Castle of Magical Wonders? The Nutcracker 2011 An all-time favorite for Christmas – The Nutcracker. Clara is delighted with her Christmas present, made by a toy maker, Uncle Drosselmeyer. She dances with the Nutcracker toy. As the house quiets down, Clara settles on the sofa and falls asleep with the doll in her toy arms. As Clara dreams, she sees her house begins to change around her. The Nutcracker is in a battle with the Mice and he wins with the help of Clara. The mice retreat and the nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince. Clara and the Prince travel to the beautiful Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. Tonight we restage The Little Mermaid with a twist on her adventure with the world inhabited by human beings. The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, eventually visits the Sea Witch in a dangerous section of the ocean. The witch willingly helps her by selling her a potion that gives her legs in exchange for her tongue (as the Little Mermaid has the most enchanting and beautiful voice in the world). Consuming the potion will make her feel as if a sword is being passed through her body, yet when she recovers, she will have two human legs and will be able to dance like no human has ever danced before. With the pair of legs, she and her sisters made their journey to The Land of Africa and were also amazed by the dazzling Broadway dancers in the New York City thereafter! Alice in Wonderland – Taste the Twist 2013 All characters from The Redson Family fell into a Wonderland! Alice, after drinking the bottle of milk, her adventure started with The Wonders of Small Flowers and The Arabian Princesses. During the journey, she encounters a Red Queen whose jewel went missing. The Red King quickly accused the Knave of Hearts for stealing and the Red Queen turned red with fury. Gathering her troop of soldiers, her aim was to capture the Knave of Hearts. When the truth was out, there was merry at the Tea Party where the Madhatter and Dormouse invited Alice to sing and dance with them. The Enchanted Tale 2014 Inspired by the movie of The Enchanted, this is the first Musical Sing and Dance by Dancepointe Seniors whom had captured the hearts of the audiences. In the land of Enchanted, there lived a princess by the name of Snow. Evil starts brewing when the White Queen, Snow’s Stepmother realized she was not going to remain Queen for much longer, and decided to banish her to the other world. Her good friends, Cinderella, Mulan and Pocahontas all fell through the magical portal to save Snow. The princesses found themselves in the real world, Times Square in New York City. As Director of Dance Factory, our Hip-Hop & K-Pop subsidiary, it brings me great joy to have seen the school transform from a simple ballet school into the vibrant and holistic multi-genre dance school that it is today! We at Dance Factory are proud to have been a member of Dancepointe Academy, and join in as they celebrate their 10th year! And what a year it has been! We wrapped up the fourth and final round of our ‘K-pop Dance League’ – the first of its kind in Singapore! Our quarterly event ‘Dance Family Outing (DFO)’ was taken to bigger and better heights with students of all levels getting to perform in venues such as J Stage, Big Box and the Bishan Community Club. Some of our students were also given the exciting opportunity to perform for the Takizawa Kabuki 10th Year Anniversary Show, which was staged at Marina Bay Sands’ The Grand Theatre. Our crews in particular have done us proud, representing us at National events such as the ‘NTUC Celebrates SG50!’, corporate shows and many more. Of special mention is our teenage crew (Gen.Z) who emerged champion for the K-Pop (Juniors) category of Pulse 2015! 26 5 Mr. Jacky Lim Dance Director of Dance Factory into even better dancers. Our ‘Crew Programme’ is one such platform. On 13th Dec, a concert by the performance teams of DPA we hope to give you a taste of what each crew has to offer – each with their own personality and flavour! They range from the energetic DF Nanos (7-9 year olds), to the quirky DF Minis (10-12 years), and the ever-cool Gen. Z (13-16 years). Our adult crews are the sexy DF Babes, the dynamic DFS, and the powerful DFJ. DF Mega is a mixture of crew members from the various adult crews while the DF All Stars consists of our instructors. Our instructors and dancers have worked hard to make tonight’s event possible, and have definitely emerged as a bigger and closer dance family. The 8 crews you see for 13th December show are just some of the budding talents from our school. As we continue to grow we hope to give more students the opportunity to be a part of this crew experience. Coincidentally, this is also my 10th year in Dance Choreography and Education. Ever since 2001, with the support of Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship by the National Arts Council for my professional training at the LASALLE, I have been most fortunate to be given many opportunities to work with talented individuals and to assist them to excel in international competitions and performance. It is immensely encouraging when we see our students winning awards in Bolzano International Dance Competition 2013, Grand Prix Italy 2012 and Dance Grand Prix in Barcelona Dance Award 2011 & 2015. I have always lived by the motto of “Dance as an Education”; and that is the very reason why I decided to part of the Dancepointe Academy (DPA) family. It has always been my belief that dance is not just about movement and creativity but also character and personality development. Such education is especially important for the young ones, and I’m glad that DPA takes the responsibility of educating them to be a better individual. With DPA‘s passion in education and willingness to give every student the space to explore Artistry in Dance, I took up the challenge to start the new faculty of contemporary dance, dACADEMY. As the Artistic Director of dACADEMY, my aim is not only impart core dance techniques in contemporary works, but also to provide proper training and opportunities to explore dance at a higher, semi-professional level. This is necessary as there are many good dancers and almost no platform in Singapore for them to pursue their passion. Besides dTEAM, the performance team of dACADEMY; I will also be leading the Apprentice Programme in 2016, with the aim of grooming young aspiring dance artists. With Dancepointe Academy’s encouragement and willingness to provide various platforms for these aspiring dancers, I believe, we will be able to catapult our dancers to greater heights. Tonight’s concert, it is the first production specially provided for our Performance and Competition Teams of DPA, namely Junior & Senior Apprentice, dTEAM and the 8 Dance Factory crews (DF Nanos, DF Minis, DF Genz, DFS, DFJ, DF Babes, DF Mega, All Stars). We will be able to see some of our recent award winning choreographies that depicts life through artistic expression and exploration of dimensions with creative use of material and props. Hope you will have an enjoyable journey! 50 5 Dancepointe Academy Production 2015 T HE PERFORMANCES TEAMS OF DPA APPRENTICE PROGRAMME 2016 Dancepointe Academy Apprentice Program is an accelerated learning dance course designed to provide talented dancers an additional platform to learn progressively and expand their artistry in dance. Students will be given opportunities to be trained on performance-oriented techniques in Classical Ballet, Modern and Jazz by the most respected teachers and professional choreographers in our community. These students will also be given the chance to gain experience and exposure from the Overseas Immersions and Competitions on the global stage as they represent Singapore for International Dance Competitions such as Europe Dance Prix and CSTD Asia Pacific. Indeed, these are invaluable for our students for résumé-building experience and discovering opportunities within the performing arts. As this is heavily subsidised programme, we are looking for dancers that are • • • • Proficient in ballet/pointe/modern. Mature, self-motivated and goal-oriented. DANCE FACTORY CREW 2016 WHY THE TEAM WAS SET UP The DF Crew platform was set up for multiple reasons – We hope to give our more passionate students the opportunity to develop and hone their dance abilities, in an environment that is more conducive for personalized and intensive training. Our aim is to groom our dancers to reach a level where they can be professional dancers or instructors in the future. Our belief is that dancers should embody both the right aptitude and attitude; therefore the crew platform also teaches our students about the importance of values such as respect, hard work, team work and integrity which are vital not just for a dance career, but also in life. Our quarterly event ‘Dance Family Outing (DFO)’ was taken to bigger and better heights with students of all levels getting to perform in venues such as J Stage, Big Box and the Bishan Community Club. Some of our students were also given the exciting opportunity to perform for the Takizawa Kabuki 10th Year Anniversary Show, which was staged at Marina Bay Sands’ The Grand Theatre.
