Once aboard, an evening Cruise committee members Heather Kowatch and Mary Diehl channeled their inner-hippie! of great food, fun and entertainment was enjoyed by all, as passengers were treated to specially prepared Cruise delicacies, actionpacked casino games and an exciting live auction, in addition to a silent auction and raffle. Entertainment was provided courtesy of the Truth & Soul band, and the Juli Kell Dance Studio. Honorary captain of the 2015 Cruise was Catherine Jaindl-Leuthe of Jaindl Farms, LLC. By simply hosting one or more blood drives with MKBC and achieving certain benchmarks, a student from every high school in the community is guaranteed a scholarship award! Scott Appnel, Manager of Mobile Recruitment, explains that scholarships are now awarded per school, based on the results of the individual schools’ blood drives during the school year. “A census number for each school will be established based on the approximate number of eligible student donors,” Appnel says. “Scholarships will be awarded based on the unit level achieved: schools collecting 30% of their census will receive a $300 scholarship award, those collecting 40% of their census will receive a $400 scholarship award, and those achieving 50% or more of their census will receive a $500 scholarship award.” Schools must have collected a minimum of 50 units for the year to be eligible for a scholarships award, and must collect a minimum of 75 units for the year to qualify for the $500 award. This year, 84 high schools ran blood drives. 33 schools qualified for scholarship awards, and 27 applications were received. Wartime made for scarce battery materials, but there was big demand for rebuilt batteries so returning GIs could get their vehicles running again. DeLight and his father filled that need by collecting old batteries and rebuilding them to new. F rom the beginning, the Breidegam’s knew if their business was to be successful, customers and employees would have to be the top priority, and opportunities for improvement could never be overlooked. These founding principles make East Penn what it is today. I n six decades, East Penn has grown from a one-room shop with a product line of five automotive batteries to one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers with over 8,000 employees, 450 product designs, and hundreds of awards for manufacturing and environmental excellence. ● Congratulations to East Penn Manufacturing, 2014 MKBC Local Leader award recipient! The Boots vs Badges vs Bandages competition is a great way for the Blood Center to partner with our local heroes, and to thank them for the leadership they demonstrate every day in our community,” The public is invited to support the friendly competition by donating in honor of their favorite hero. Each organization has partnered with the blood center to recruit donors and raise awareness on the importance of blood donation. Individuals can donate at any MKBC Donor Center or Community Blood Drive between May 25 and September 7, and have their donation go towards their favorite first responder. When individuals arrive for their donation they can either state the group or sponsor code of the heroes they would most like to support: Fire (Boots) Sponsor Code 7417 – Police (Badges) Sponsor Code 7416 – EMS (Bandages) Sponsor Code 7418.
