I
t was a beautiful spring weekend in Panama City, Florida when
Father Michael Danek, CR, Provincial Superior and Father
Gary Hogan, CR, Director of Fomation in St Louis, Missouri and
our two Seminarians, Paul Smith, CR and Eric Wagner, CR and
Brother William Hallas, CR, Director of Development visited our
two parishes in Florida the weekend of March 11th and 12th, 2006.
We spoke at all the Masses and visited with parishioners after all
the Masses at St John the Evangelist and St Bernardette’s in Florida.
A second collection was taken up at the Masses to help the Seminary
Fund of the Congregation of the Resurrection, USA. What a
wonderful experience it was to hear great stories about the priests
who have served at St John’s over the years and continue to serve
at St John’s, namely Rev Donald Suberlak, CR, Rev. Richard
Grek, CR, Rev Dennis Sanders, CR, Rev Frank Grzechowiak, CR,
Rev Glen Baptiste, CR, Rev Martin Bratek, CR, Rev Jerzy Zieba, CR,
current pastor and Rev Jacek Junak, CR, Associate Pastor.
At St Bernardette’s, Father Ted Sosnowski, CR, Pastor and
Father Edward DuBel, CR, associate Pastor were gracious hosts to
us. The people shared their love for these two men of God, who
make the Gospel alive to them. All the Masses are filled to capacity
and enjoy the ministry and homilies that they experience every
weekend. Both parishes have big schools and enjoy very good
enrollments. It is always a good experience to hear that the mission
and the charism of the Congregation of the Resurrection – USA
Province is alive and well.
We are most grateful to all the people who have donated from
their resources to the Seminary Education Fund. We look forward
to our visit again this year on March 17-18, 2007.

Dear Family and Friends of the Congregation of the Resurrection,
A wise philosopher once said: “A year in one’s life cannot be measured by events or commemorations but
rather by counting each day as important as the next day!” Perhaps most do not live with this free-spirited
attitude but rather by counting the number of birthdays or anniversaries. 2007 is an important year for
the Congregation of the Resurrection. This year marks the 200th Anniversary of the birth of our founder,
Bogdan Janski. Bogdan Janski was an incredible man. His zeal for accepting God’s will was a critical part
of his conversion from a life of despair and a critical part for his vision of resurrecting society. Bogdan
Janski boldly proclaimed a sincere reliance upon God’s unconditional grace to strengthen one in following
the example of Jesus Christ. He called his followers (the original Resurrectionists) to live their humble lives
in service of the church by working for the resurrection of society. Resurrectionists through our many
ministerial endeavors seek to bring to others this message of hope.
Allow me to express a sincere note of thanks for your participation in our community’s apostolate of
working for the resurrection of society. Your partnering with us encourages us to continue living out our
calling to be Resurrectionists and allows us to spread this message of hope in our apostolic endeavors.
We invite you to continue to share in this apostolic mission and spread hope in this turbulent world.

Bequests are free of estate tax, and can substantially reduce the amount of your assets claimed by the government. You can give
needed support for the Congregation of the Resurrection-USA Province by simply including the following words in your will:

Fund Raiser again a huge success
W
On Sunday afternoon, at the residence of Mr & Mrs
Michael Casey there was a gathering of Parishioners and friends
selected by Father Tim, CR for a nice summer brunch. At that
time our Provincial, Father Mike Danek, CR along with
Father Gary Hogan, CR share their words of appreciation to
the people in attendance. Father Tim, CR and Father James
Gibson, CR presented the Resurrection Merit Award to the
recipients of Our Lady of the Lake Church and St Joseph
Church in Fontana, California. This year Catherine Garrett
received the award from our Lady of the Lake Parish and
Bernardita Lopez received the award from St Joseph in Fontana,
California. Thanks again Father Tim, CR, for your outstanding
organization of these events in the mountains of Lake
Arrowhead. We certainly have reached our goals each year.
e traveled up the mountain for the Annual Fund
Raiser for our Seminarians in St Louis, Missouri
on Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13, 2006. It is
always such a joy to be with the parishioners of Our Lady
of Lake and St Ann in the Mountains parishes. Father Tim
Keppel, CR pastor of both churches has a well organized
weekend for all who attend. Father Gary Hogan, CR,
Director of Formation in St Louis, preached at all the
Masses at St Ann & Our Lady of the Lake Parishes. Each
of the seminarians, Paul Smith, CR and Eric Wagners, CR
expressed their words of thanks for the kindnesses they
receive from the people. Brother William Hallas, CR,
shared with the parishioners the need for help and ways
that they can help our Seminary Education Fund.

The Dream of
BROTHER
Brother Bogdan was born Theodore Ignatius
Bogdan Janski in 1807. In the years before and
during Theodore’s childhood, Poland was
annexed, freed, and annexed again. It was one
of the darkest moments in his country’s history.
These changes had a profound effect on Polish
citizens, especially the youth.
In Paris, Theodore found a group of Polish refugees. Like
him, they were poor, wild, and unable to deal with the political
turmoil in their homeland. Now twenty, Theodore began to
call himself “Bogdan,” his less formal middle name.
With his new name, things began to change for Bogdan,
but very slowly. His new comrades were just as unruly and
unrestrained as his old. But, now he made a living translating
works from Polish to French, writing articles and tutoring
high school students. Bogdan was maturing.
From time to time, he thought of Alexandra. He wrote her
letters and, when he had it, sent her money but the threat of
war kept Alexandra and Bogdan apart. He would never see her
again, and he would never meet their son.
Poland’s great Romantic poet, Adam Mickiewicz, was one
of the political refugees in Paris. His home had become a
gathering place for young men like Bogdan. The poet was a
strong believer in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and attended
Mass regularly. Under Mickiewicz’s influence, Bogdan began
to wonder if he could find God’s grace once again.
After many years of avoiding Mass, he found himself
wandering into churches to pray, though still drinking and
roaming the nighttime streets of Paris. His diary recounts a
daily struggle between sin and God’s grace: “Merciful God,
support me with your grace. Complete within me this work of
salvation, of reconciliation with you…In you, O God, is all
my hope.”
Soon he formed a study group of like-minded individuals.
Young men, mostly, they went to Mass each Friday and then
gathered to study sacred scripture at the house of Mickiewicz.
Eager to apply the biblical message of salvation to their
circumstances, they asked: What would happen if we began
living like true disciples of Jesus? Is a regeneration of society
based on Christian principles even possible?
In Acts 4:32 they found hope: “The whole body of believers
was united in heart and soul…everything was held in common,
while the apostles bore witness with great power to the
Resurrection of Jesus Christ.” A Christian social revolution
might be possible, Bogdan thought. Society could be reborn
but this time formed by the Gospel. The dream of Bogdan
Janski began to take shape.
His father and mother separated when he was in elementary
school and Theodore – as he was known during his youth –
grew up under the influence of religious teachers who taught
him to seek God and strive for holiness. His teachers recognized
that he was smart and imaginative, and they made it possible
for him stay in school and move on to the University of Warsaw.
His mother wrote her son a letter before he left for
Warsaw, which he kept in his diary: “My Dear Theodore, do
not get into bad company; avoid those who would lead you into
worldly and bad habits. Look for companions who have a good
reputation…” He was fifteen years old.
At the University, Theodore got his first taste of the secular
world and soon rejected Christianity for materialism. Despite
his mother’s warning, he became friends with a classmate who
introduced him to drinking, parties and brothels.
Theodore often met his friends for bouts of drinking
and sex in the tombs beneath the floor level of the Carmelite
Church in Warsaw. During one meeting, Theodore poured
a drink into a human skull and served up a toast from it.
Lifting his gruesome cup he cursed death and laughed at
the thought of eternal life. Life was to be lived now and the
fullness of pleasure was found only in the thrills of sensuality.
Just before he left his hometown for further studies in Paris,
he impulsively married a pregnant girlfriend named Alexandra.
The son born to Theodore and Alexandra was not Theodore’s
but he had married her to save her from embarrassment.
Later, he would claim that a woman has deprived him of
greatness. Yet, his real problem was his inability to reign in
his emotions and impulses plus his lack of moral standards.

He realized that to begin a new life he had to seek
forgiveness and healing through the sacrament of confession.
His grand ideas were still locked behind his sinful habits. So
he and several others began to prepare for their first confession
since they were children. Bogdan prayed with all his heart
that God would free him from his sins of sensuality. Even
after the powerful experience of confession he struggled with
his tendency to sin. He began to rely totally on God’s grace.
Two of his young friends, Peter Semenenko and Jerome
Kajsiewicz, joined Bogdan in receiving the sacrament of
reconciliation and soon they began to lead lives more in
accord with the message of Jesus Christ. Once Bogdan found
God through Jesus Christ he set his heart on leading others
to conversion.
Bogdan’s dream of a new life for himself and his friends
became a reality when he rented a house in Paris and invited
several men to live with him, just like the small group of early
Christians mentioned in Acts. In 1836, four of these friends
with Janski as Elder Brother formed a community of young
men that became the inspiration for the Congregation of the
Resurrection. Brother Bogdan was twenty-nine years old
when he formed his new community.
Under the power of God’s grace, he led the life of a
penitent and experienced a complete regeneration of his
soul. He took to the streets of Paris again, but this time it
was to seek out the poor exiles and to offer them the gift
of hope, the same hope that had saved his life. He fed the
hungry and sheltered the homeless with money he begged
from some of the well-off exiles in Paris.
Bogdan developed amazing patience and calm. A friend
writes of him in those days: “How many hardships he had to
endure…how many evil things he had to listen to before he was
able to convince this or that friend of his errors…take them to
Mass and finally lead them to the confessional.” (Witwicki, cited
in Ruszel, p. 13)
And a priest who knew him then remembers his care for
others: “If you only knew how many poor people Janski feeds,
clothes and provides with the necessities of life! Living with
him for six months, I take God as my witness, that often he did
not have a shirt to change into because he gave his last one to
some needy person, forgetting that he was more needy than all
the rest.” (Mikulski)
He was seen in the streets in tattered work clothes while
dealing with the poor. Someone saw the miserable condition
of his shoes and bought him a new pair. The next day, the
donor saw him wearing old worn-out shoes and confronted
him: “What happened to the shoes I bought you yesterday?”
“Don’t be angry,” Bogdan answered, “I met a very poor person
and exchanged shoes with him.” (Plater, Ruszel, p. 14) For
the poor immigrants of Paris, Bogdan Janski became an
apostle of hope.
During the next few years Bogdan intensified his mission
to the poor of Paris. Soon the other brothers joined him in
the work and they divided up the poor sector of the city,
each accepting the responsibility to visit and assist the needy
in his area.
Then Bogdan began to cough. At first it was just annoying.
With the cough came fatigue and weakness. When he began
to cough up blood, he knew that he had little time left to do
all the things he had hoped to do in his life. He had dreamed
of little houses of brothers living together and forming a
network of passionate Christians who would change the world.
What would happen now?
Bogdan did live to see his community open another
house, this time in Rome. By 1840 though, he was so sick
that the brothers in Rome asked him to come there so they
could take care of him. He died in Rome among his brothers
when he was only thirty-three, too soon to see his community
fulfill the dream of a new society formed and energized by
the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
This dream did not end with his death, however. Today,
throughout many areas of the world, the Congregation of the
Resurrection works to establish the kingdom of God and to
live out Janski's dream of transformation of the individual and
society. Brother Bogdan, the apostle of hope, still moves the
hearts of his brothers in the Congregation of the Resurrection.
You have read the story of our founder, Brother Bogdan.
We, the Congregation of the Resurrection, have dedicated our
lives to his dream for the world. Our message is simple and
clear: we strive to help those who are struggling with sin and
who feel powerless or dead inside. We tell them of God’s love
and grace freely available through belief and commitment to
Jesus Christ. We help them rise up from the darkness of sin to
live in the light of the Gospel.
Beyond bringing hope to the individual, we also have a
unique way of looking at society. We know that the world can
be a dark, sinful place and that there are many people who live
in a culture of death. Wherever we Resurrectionists work, we
endeavor to bring life. We offer a new way of living and promote
a new society founded on the example of the Acts of the Apostles
where the original community of Christians was united in
heart and mind. Sharing the Eucharist binds us together and
helps us form a new society in Jesus Christ. With all our hearts
we strive for resurrection of those dead in sin and despair.
We are faithful to the charisma of our Elder Brother Bogdan
who illuminated his world with the light of Jesus Christ. We, the
members of his Congregation, carry that light wherever we go.
Brother Bogdan’s dream is our dream, too.

9th Annual Benefit Dinner
FOR OUR MEN IN FORMATION AND
OUR SENIOR RELIGIOUS A HUGE SUCCESS

which honors a Resurrection Father or Brother who is selected
by the pastors or leaders of the community in Chicago. A person
who truly is a Brother to his Brothers. This year we honored
Father Gene Szarek, CR with this Award. In his acceptance
speech Father Gene, CR shared with the group some of the
Resurrection Fathers who have made a tremendous impact in his
life. A very moving moment. The last award that is given out at
the fund raiser is the Resurrection Merit Award 2006. This award
is selected by a pastor, president or administrator of one of our
Ministries throughout the USA. Every year many of these people
selected truly share the Mission and Charism of the Congregation
of the Resurrection.
Again, this year the PRCUA – (Polish Roman Catholic Union of
America) have helped underwrite the costs of the dinner. We are
always most grateful to them for their loyal support. This was our
9th year in celebrating the Vision of Hope in raising funds for the
Congregation of the Resurrection. Please make your calendars for
Sunday, September 30, 2007 for the next fund raiser.
t seems that most people in our Resurrection Family, mark
their calendars for the last Sunday in September to be present
for our annual fund raiser for the Congregation of the Resurrection
year marking these funds for our Senior Religious and our men in
formation. This year was no exception. Sunday, September 24,
2006 was a great day for the Resurrectionists and all those people
that share our Vision of Hope in this world. We had full attendance
again this year of 535 people. This year we have honored the
Franciscan Sisters of Chicago a religious community of women
that was guided by Resurrectionists from it founding at the parish
of St Stanislaus Kostka Church in Chicago, Illinois. Sister Diane
Marie Collins, OSF, General Minister accepted the Vision of
Hope Award 2006 in the name of her Religious Community. In
her acceptance speech she clearly identified the Resurrectionists
that were instrumental in helping found her religious community.
It was a great joy to have all of their ministries represented at the
fund raiser from Illinois to Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky & Texas. The
other award that is presented is The Veritas et Caritas Award 2006

PERPETUAL MEMORIALS
The Congregation of the Resurrection, USA Province, has available the Resurrection
Perpetual Memorials for remembrance of your deceased loved one. Masses will be
celebrated by the Provincial Superior, a Mass will be celebrated during the month
of November and your loved ones will be remembered in the daily prayers of
Congregation of the Resurrection. To request a Resurrection Perpetual Memorial
please contact the Director of Development at 7050 N Oakley Avenue, Chicago,
Illinois, 60645 or call 773-465-8352.
