ON THE COVER
Dear Friends
In May Bishop Kenny High School celebrated its
62nd commencement exercises. 277 graduates
joined the ranks of BK’s alumni at ceremonies at the University of North Florida
Arena on May 24. Father John Tetlow, Class of 1972, served as celebrant and
homilist at graduation Mass held at St. Joseph parish on May 23. This issue of
The Avenue details more information about the Class of 2014 and our graduation week activities.
The past 25 years has seen a nearly complete transformation of our campus. Either because of significant renovation or as the result of new construction, the results are the same. These projects enable our students to take
advantage of excellent facilities in which to spend their high school years.
This summer a major renovation of the facilities at William Johnston
Stadium was completed. We thank the BK Boosters for their generous commitment of $100,000 toward this project. Also, finished in time for the opening of school in August, a complete new concept and redesign of the
Demetree Library has been completed. Renamed the Demetree Learning
Commons, Bishop Kenny’s former library has been transformed into a 21st century learning center. This summer’s projects also included the addition of an
art gallery to the Fine Arts Building, providing a permanent display area for student art. Finally, the main lobby area has undergone a facelift and features a
beautiful plaque presented to me last December by the faculty and staff in
honor of my 35th anniversary of priesthood and 25th anniversary as President
of BK. My thanks is extended to Principal Todd Orlando and Vice-Principal Bob
West who have taken the lead in managing these ambitious projects. Much
has been accomplished over the summer vacation!
The brick and mortar improvements of these past 25 years have been
made possible by many generous benefactors. They enable us to maintain our
commitment to the ongoing
improvement of both programs
and facilities. We are also mindful
of, and grateful to alumni, parents,
and friends who contribute so generously to the Annual Fund each
year. These important contributions
provide tuition assistance for needy
students so that they, too, can benefit from all that our school makes
possible.
I am happy to report that the
faculty, staff, and administration,
under the capable leadership of our
principal, Todd Orlando, are maintaining the excellence for which
BKHS has always been known.

BK Physics instructor, Mr. Scott Thomas utilized one of the
teaming tables in the Demetree Learning Commons to
review the results of a recent AP Physics 2 Assignment.
Student Assignment: In preparation for lab experiments
on gases, students had to create a three-dimensional
computer simulation of balls bouncing inside a cube. By
comparing the results of the simulation to the experimental
results, students were able to formulate a model to
describe and predict the behavior of gases.

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS
The Demetree Learning Commons*
O
ur cover features the newly completed Demetree Learning Commons,
one of several significant additions to the BK campus completed this
summer. What is a learning commons? It’s an educational setting
with shared space for information technology, remote or online
education, tutoring, collaboration, content creation, meetings, and
reading or study.
The Demetree Learning Commons is a totally redesigned learning
and technology headquarters for students. Bishop Kenny Principal,
Todd Orlando explained, “This state-of-the-art facility supports the
development of the 21st century skill set that we are committed to
imparting to all of our students. It is the perfect complement to our
1:1 iPad initiative, now in its second year.”
“Students and teachers are exploring this new space and using it
just as we hoped they would when we were in the planning stages of
the project,” remarked Katherine Moody, Director of Learning Commons.
Features of the Learning Commons:
◆ Student information help desk; iPad help desk
Of course there are books in the Learning Commons!
◆ Teaming tables with monitors (pictured on the cover of this
issue of The Avenue)
◆ A glass enclosed computer lab with 30 Node chairs (moveable
adaptable chairs) and 20 laptops
◆ 7 PC desktop stations with printing capabilities
◆ Meeting space
◆ Lounge area with bookstore-style seating and tables, featuring
a traditional print collection including literature, fiction, and
magazines
Mrs. Moody added, “Some of the resources of the Learning
Commons are available to students via Schoology, an online learning
platform that is loaded on every BK student’s iPad.” Students are able to
access subscription databases for off-campus academic research 24/7.
Available databases included Literature, Science, History, World Religion,
Social Studies, the Encyclopedia Britannica, and a Student Resource
Center. Moody concluded, “We have built a resource facility for our students that will ensure that they will graduate from Bishop Kenny with the
21st century skills required for college and the work force.”

his summer’s $1.6 million building and renovation project has
impacted much of Bishop Kenny’s 55-acre campus. BK President
Father Michael Houle shared, “We are especially pleased with this
summer’s projects – most especially because of the diverse nature of
the improvements and additions that have been made. We’ve impacted the academic and technology programs, the arts, our stadium facilities, and even the lobby area where visitors to campus are welcomed.”

Stadium & Sports Complex
In our cover story we detailed the redesign of the Demetree Library
into the Demetree Learning Commons but, that is just the beginning of
this summer’s improvements. William Johnston Stadium, home to the
Bishop Kenny Crusaders, has also undergone a substantial makeover that
will have a positive impact on every athlete and spectator that uses the
stadium for many generations to come. A press box nearly three times
the size of the previous one, complete with all of the wiring necessary to
facilitate live radio broadcasts and the live streaming of Crusader action
on the field, has been added to the stadium. All new men’s and women’s
restroom facilities, designed to accommodate even BK’s largest events,
have been completed, along with a new completely outfitted concession
facility. Well-lit and beautifully landscaped patio spaces complete the
picture of the newly-renovated riverfront sports complex. Bishop Felipe
Estévez was on hand at the Crusaders season opener vs. Bartram Trail on
August 29 to bless and dedicate the new stadium facilities. He even had
time to stop in at the Alumni Picnic held before the game.
Water, Water, Everywhere
Five new hydration stations have been installed throughout campus. The stations help minimize the need for so many wasteful plastic
water bottles. The stations provide access for students to get a quick
drink of water or to refill their own bottles with filtered water. Two of the
stations, which have been well-received by students returning to school
in August, were donated as a gift to the school, at a cost of $3,000, from
the Class of 2014.
200 Building Lobby
Finally, a renovation to the lobby area at the main entrance to the
school has been completed. Now it is a sun-filled, welcoming place for
students, parents, and visitors. A simple plaque greets all who walk
through the doors to Bishop Kenny High School. It reads, We do well
always and everywhere to give thanks.

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS
Student Art Gallery
surplus classroom located in close proximity to the art studio has been transformed into
a permanent art gallery. The brainchild and dream of BK art teacher Kelly Long, this new
facility provides an important opportunity for student art to be displayed throughout
the year. “Students will gain a working knowledge of how a gallery is coordinated and run; they
will also learn how to prepare, mat, and frame artwork; and they will learn to see the big picture
and apply their knowledge of art criticism
when curating and selecting work to display,” commented Miss Long. The gallery will
also provide an important experience of art
appreciation for our students not enrolled in
art classes. How exciting for our student
artists and also our young patrons of the arts!

Miss Kelly Long BK ‘02, recently completed the first of three summers of study at
the Design School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Miss Long, who has taught art
at Bishop Kenny for six years, has been accepted to the Design’s Master of Fine Arts
program. She is working on a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics. The program is
ranked #2 on US News & World Report’s Annual List of Best Graduate Schools. Miss
Long was one of only 35 applicants accepted to the program from among candidates from throughout the United States and around the world. She will spend six
weeks in Chicago for each of the next two summers and will do distance learning
for the next two years while continuing to teach at BK. The MFA degree is the terminal degree in the Arts, equivalent to a Ph.D in other fields of study.

2013-14 Annual Fund Campaign Wrap-Up
n the winter edition of The Avenue we featured a preIAnnual
liminary honor roll of donors to the 2013-2014

AUCTION REPORT
28th BK Boosters Auction
his year’s BK Boosters auction held on March 22 realized a net profit of
just over $107,000. More importantly, in its 28-year history the auction
has raised nearly $2,000,000! This year’s proceeds will be used for,
among other things, the first payment on the BK Boosters $100,000 pledge to
the stadium improvements completed this summer. Other uses for the
money include paying the cost of post-season team transportation, team uniforms, equipment, and a myriad of other financial requests yet to be imagined!

For the 16th year in a row, our friends at Carrabba’s Italian Grill provided a delicious buffet dinner featuring chicken marsala and steak marsala to
a hungry auction crowd. Every item is freshly cooked and beautifully presented to nearly 500 appreciative guests. Following dinner, auction-goers
enjoyed the delicious ice cream desserts donated by the Devenny family,
owners of Bruster’s Ice Cream. We thank the Devennys, all of whom are BK
graduates, for their continued generosity to the auction.

The auction is not only successful in raising funds to help defray costs
and underwrite projects to enhance the quality of extracurricular and athletic programs for our students, but it also brings volunteers together. It
requires months of planning and a committee of at least 100 parents and
friends of BK to put it all together. Volunteers, old and new, are always needed,
so please keep your eyes peeled for meeting notices and announcements
about auction work days – and don’t forget to mark your calendar and plan
to join us on auction night.
Our thanks is extended to all of the people, past and present, who have
been a part of the auction’s growth and ask that all of our alumni, parents,
and friends help make this event continue to thrive well into the future.

Each year the BK auction features more than 500 items on which to bid. What makes our auction so
special is the incredible variety of special items – the hard-to-get and unusual things – that our
network of alumni, parents and friends are able and willing to bring to the table.
Auction volunteer Joe DeSalvo was able to secure a
private, behind-the-scenes tour of EverBank
Field this year. The Florida Times-Union’s Jaguars
beat writer Ryan O’Halloran took our lucky bidders

donates an aerial tour of the North Florida Coastline for
up to four people every year. This year Jim played host to BK
President Father Houle, and BK board members Anthony
Parete BK ’80 and David Marovich. The day was beautiful and
the group enjoyed a tour that took them south to St.
Augustine and north to Amelia Island. Jim returned the plane
and all on board safely, landing back at Craig Field with wonderful memories and some great pictures, too. What a great
auction item!

Graduation Week 2014
62nd Graduating Class of BKHS
G
raduation week is full of activities for members of the senior
class and their families to enjoy. The activities begin with
an Awards Program and Reception on Thursday night at the
University of North Florida. Graduation Mass is held the following day
at St. Joseph Church in Mandarin, and the week concludes on Saturday
morning with commencement exercises at the University of North
Florida.
A class snapshot would tell you that the Class of 2014 is made up
of 277 graduates; 100% of whom were accepted to college. The class
earned nearly $7.3 million dollars in college scholarships and performed 56,977 hours of community service during their high school
careers.
Senior Awards
The Senior Awards Program, held at the University of North Florida,
saw students gather to collect more than 500 certificates, trophies,
scholarships, medals, appointments, and even a few oversized presentation checks! Many knew why they had
been invited, and others were surprised
when their names were called to accept
special awards. A complete list of all of the
scholarships and awards presented to the
Class of 2014 is printed in this publication.

The week concluded with the 62nd commencement exercises of
Bishop Kenny High School. The ceremony was held bright and early on
Saturday, May 24 at the University of
North Florida. Dr. Bryant Adibe, a member
of the Bishop Kenny Class of 2006, delivered the customary address to the graduates, and Bishop Felipe Estévez presented
diplomas to each proud graduate. In his
address, Dr. Adibe, whose remarks were at
the same time thoughtful and entertaining, shared the following:
Your future, your tomorrow begins with your
vision from today. In the Old Testament it
says, “My people perish, due to lack of vision.”
And to these exceptional graduates…I say,
develop your vision. Lay out a roadmap to

Senior Awards 2014
T
he Senior Awards Program is one of the highlights of graduation week. Held at
the University of North Florida, parents of seniors come to watch their students
as they are called forward to accept the many scholarships, service awards, and
other presentations made at the program. Vice-Principal Mary DeSalvo served as emcee of
this year’s ceremony. After welcoming the assembled parents, students, and special guests,
Mrs. DeSalvo invited student council president David Barr to begin the program with a prayer.
In addition to many of the scholarship presentations that were made and are listed in the
master list of scholarships printed in this publication, the following memorial awards were
presented to members of the Class of 2014. These awards are given annually in tribute to people
who, each in their own way, left a mark on our school.

SCHOLARSHIP
Roger DuPont presents David Yarbrough with
the John Burke Award
JOHN BURKE AWARD
The John Burke Award is presented by the BK
Class of 1965 to the male or female student who
demonstrates exceptional achievement in both
the academic and athletic arenas. John Burke
was an outstanding scholar-athlete who lettered
in three sports – football, baseball, and track –
while maintaining an exceptional grade point
average at BK. John died in a workplace accident
during the summer between his freshman and
sophomore years at the University of Florida. A
committee of John’s BK classmates gathers annually to select the student recipient of this award.
The winner’s name is added to a perpetual trophy
that is displayed in the school gymnasium. A
commemorative plaque is given to the recipient
and a check in the amount of $500 is also awarded.

KATIE CAPLES SCHOLARSHIP
The Katie Caples Scholarship is provided by
the foundation established in her memory.
Katie was a member of the Class of 1999 who
passed away during her junior year as the
result of injuries sustained in an automobile
accident. An honor student and state champi-

onship runner, Katie was also involved in a
host of extracurricular activities at BK. Male
and female nominees are submitted to the
selection committee for anonymous consideration. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement, athletic participation, and
service to school and community. The scholarship is just one leg of the foundation’s activities that also focus on raising awareness and
support for organ donation programs. The
Katie Scholar receives a plaque and wrist
watch to commemorate the selection, and a
four-year renewable scholarship with a total
value of up to $12,000. Mr. David Caples presented the scholarship to the 2014 Katie
Scholar, Maria Iglesias.
NICHOLAS SIMON DENNIS AWARD
The Nicholas Simon Dennis Award is presented by the Dennis Family to the student who
most closely mirrors the interests or qualities of
their son Nicholas, a member of the Class of
2004, who passed away at the beginning of his
senior year. A love for history and humanities is
the prerequisite quality for the recipient of this
award. Faculty members, especially the AP
History teacher, are consulted in the selection
process. The recipient of this award is presented
with a commemorative plaque and a check in
The Clay Roberts Memorial Scholarship is
presented by the family of Clay Roberts, a
member of the BK Class of 2007. The scholarship celebrates the life of Clay who passed
away during his senior year. This renewable
scholarship is presented to a male or female
student who has participated in varsity athletics, has maintained a strong academic and
extra-curricular record, and has demonstrated
the qualities of fair play and team spirit. A pool
of nominations is submitted to a committee
for consideration and selection. The presentation plaque applauds the winner for making a
positive difference in the daily lives of others
through words and actions. In addition to the
commemorative plaque, the winner will
receive a renewable four-year scholarship with
a value of up to $4,000. The 2014 winner of
the Clay Roberts Memorial Scholarship was
William Parry. Dr. Gary and Terry Roberts,
along their daughter Casey ‘10, presented the
scholarship at the ceremony.

The Sister Mary Vincent Lourcey, SSJ
Scholarship is presented in memory of this
fine teacher who left an indelible mark on

Tom Coughlin Jay Fund
Congratulations to Kathleen Patti ‘14 on being chosen as the 2014-2015 Jay
Fund Scholarship recipient. Kathleen was diagnosed with cancer of the soft tissue
in 2002 and suffered a recurrence in 2009. Kathleen has battled through it all, she
has beaten cancer twice, and is moving on to college. She hopes to work with children as a social worker.
Once quoting Christopher Reeve, Tom Coughlin shared, “A hero is an ordinary
individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Kathleen is truly such a hero and inspiration to all who know her.
In 1996, while coaching the Jaguars, Tom Coughlin officially created the Jay
Fund. This not-for-profit organization is devoted to assisting children with leukemia
and other cancers and their families by providing emotional and financial support
in order to help alleviate the stress associated with treatment and to improve the
quality of their life. Since its inception, the fund has disbursed in excess of $2 million, while assisting over 1,000 families of children with cancer.

Christina Marie Schmitt was selected as the 2014
Bishop Kenny High School recipient of the 14th annual
award. In a letter to Bishop Snyder informing him of this
year’s Peace In Christ Award recipient, Deacon De Luca
wrote, “Christina Marie is an above average student. She
has earned the respect of her teachers and classmates
alike. A Bright Futures Candidate, she has been very
involved in the school’s extra-curricular activities such as
cross country, National Honor Society, and track.
Additionally, she finds time to assume leadership roles
and responsibilities in the BK Chapter of the St. Vincent de
Paul Society and in Campus Ministry where she served in
a commendable manner as an Extraordinary Minister of
Holy Communion. She is actively involved in her parish
community. Those who meet her are always touched by
her willingness and ability to provide service with a smile
and a happy heart.”
Christina is the daughter of BK Science Department
chairman Vicki Schmitt and husband Phil, and is currently
enrolled as a freshman at FSU.
BK parent and graduate Rafi Wartan ‘82 seems perfectly happy
to be surrounded by BK’s Georgia Tech-bound graduates at the
Senior Awards Program. Rafi, who represented the Georgia
Tech Alumni Association at the program, had the pleasure of
presenting Alumni Scholarships to two BK students, Erik
Sampayo and his daughter Maddy Wartan.

Valedictorian of the Class of 2014 David Barr
David Barr earned a final GPA of 4.5, earning the
distinction of being named Bishop Kenny High
School’s 62nd Valedictorian. David is enrolled at
the University of Miami where he plans to major in
economics.
David served as the President of Bishop Kenny
High School’s Student Government during his
senior year. He was a member of the National
Honor Society, a four-year member of our boys’ cross country and
track teams, and an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He
has taken eleven AP exams during high school, and was named an
AP Scholar with Distinction in the summer of 2013 as a result of his
high scores.
Besides being an outstanding student and athlete, David
Salutatorian of the Class of 2014 David Yarbrough
David Yarbrough, Salutatorian of the Class
of 2014 earned a final GPA of 4.48. David, who
accepted a Cross Country Scholarship, is currently enrolled at Florida Southern College where he
will study Biology in their Honors College.
David served on the Bishop Kenny Student
Council for three years, was Chaplain of the
National Honor Society, and Secretary of the
St. Vincent de Paul Society. David also served as a Student Representative
on the Bishop Kenny School Improvement Team for two years.
David was a member of the National Honor Society, the
National Spanish Honor Society, and participated in the prestigious
Joe Berg Society seminars. He achieved Honor Roll every quarter of
his high school career, received certificates of excellence in several
earned over 535 service hours during his high school career, the
highlight of which was a very meaningful mission trip to Haiti last
summer.
David is a National Merit Commended Scholar and a National
Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar based on his PSAT scores. He
received the St. Michael’s College Book Award for his outstanding
academic record, his volunteerism, and his leadership.
David applied and was accepted to the University of Alabama,
the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of
Miami, and the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
David Barr ‘14 is the first valedictorian in school history to share
this distinction with a sibling. David’s sister Lauren Barr ‘11 was
the valedictorian of her class. We wish both of these talented
BK graduates every success in their respective pursuits.

from the University of Rochester. He also served as an

the time to accumulate over 200 service hours to various community organizations.
David was a four-year member of the track and cross country teams. He was the 2013 FHSAA 2A 1600m State Champion,
a member of the 2012 FHSAA 2A Cross Country State
Champion Team, and the 2012 Florida Times-Union Boys’ Cross
Country Runner of the Year, as well as the Jacksonville Track Club’s
2012 Most Outstanding Male High School Cross Country Runner.
David applied and was accepted to Clemson University, Florida
State University, the University of Florida, Florida Southern College,
and Furman University.
National Merit Finalists
In October of 2012 over 1.5 million juniors
took the PSAT and entered the National
Merit Scholarship competition. Fifty thousand of those students were identified as

Creative Photography
Last spring, Emily Bateh ‘16, a student in Creative Photography participated in a
class project resulting in a new view of the Bishop Paul Tanner Chapel. In describing
the assignment, photography teacher Mr. Vinny Saladino said, “Students were commissioned by a magazine company of their choice to shoot for its cover. Using the
concepts and fundamentals we covered this year, students
were asked to take their best photograph from their
newest photo shoot and design the magazine cover.”
Many students jumped at the opportunity to photograph for magazines such as Better Homes & Gardens,
Sports Illustrated, and National Geographic. Emily chose to
photograph the Chapel interior and proudly decided
she would feature her photo as the cover for The
Avenue. According to Mr. Saladino, “Not only did Emily’s
photo provide us with a new perspective of the
Chapel, I was happy to see The Avenue held in the
same league as other national publications.”
Miss Emily Bateh ’16 chose the Paul F. Tanner Chapel
as the subject of a Creative Photography project.

Mary Dickey Named Finalist in Essay Contest
In January of 2014, in preparation
for the canonization of Pope John Paul
II as a Saint of the Catholic Church in
April, participating Catholic High
Schools in the U.S. announced a commemorative essay contest. Students
were challenged to write, in 250
words or less, an answer to the following question – If Pope John Paul II
were alive today, what would he do to
bring peace to the world? The following
essay, which was named one of seven
finalists in the competition, was submitted by Mary Dickey ‘16.
“As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in
which we live,” said Pope John Paul II. Throughout his role as the leader of our
Church, one of the things he heavily focused on was the domestic church. The
basis of our society, government, and our very own church are based on family.
In fact, the first thing that the devil attacks is family. If Pope John Paul II were alive
today, the domestic church would be central to his mission for world peace. In
today’s world, the very structure of family is under constant attacks from the outside world. Once the structure of family has been attacked, our government,
society, and even the Church will fall. Due to this vital need for the domestic
church, Pope John Paul II would use the domestic family to his advantage to promote world peace. He would instruct us to create a strong faith center environment for our children because they are the world’s future leaders. With leaders
strong in their faith, we can come to more reasonable conclusions without the
need for violence to solve our growing conflicts in today’s world. Not only will a
faith driven domestic family raise fully capable leaders, but it will also promote
peace within our very own communities, which leads to an overall better functioning group. By using the domestic family as our fountain, we will be able to
continue Pope John Paul II’s work to promote world peace.”
Mary, who learned of the contest from Assistant Academic Dean and English
teacher, Mrs. Laura Yocum, was also recognized for winning the Florida Times-Union's
annual Holiday Short Story Contest in December of 2013. Mary's story, The Christmas
Angel appeared on the front page of the lifestyle section of the Times-Union on
December 24, 2013. We applaud this young writer for taking the time to participate
in these competitions and for the excellent quality of her work.

BK THEATRE
T
he Bishop Kenny Players 2014 main stage
theater production, William Shakespeare's
Romeo & Juliet, showcased the talents of a
large cast of very talented students. Ms. Amy Canning,
Theatre Arts and Technical Arts teacher, served as director for the show.
The production featured a futuristic set that was
influenced by the all-paper set designed by Architect
Frank Gehry in 2003 for a production of Mozart’s opera
Don Giovanni at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los
Angeles. The production also featured new age music
and an original score written by our own Maeve
Cosgrove ‘15. The cast also used Zulu fighting sticks to
perform professional stage fights choreographed by
Chris Beaulieu.

There were multiple notable performances including Kelsey Wittig ‘14 as Juliet. Kelsey currently attends
the American Music Dramatics Academy in New York
City. Jack Macri ‘16 delivered a very strong performance
as Romeo, while Grace Tilbrook ‘16 played the part of
the saucy nurse, and Noah Duclos ‘15 was sensational
as Friar. Even Deacon De Luca made a cameo appearance as Friar John, much to the delight of the audience.
The theatre department was also able to display
its brand new, beautiful sky drop that gave brilliant
color to the entire set. The cast played to a full house
on each of its two-night schedule at the Carla Harris
Performing Arts Center in March.
The upcoming season promises more great performances as plans are underway for an exciting One
Act festival in the fall, an early spring children's show
and, for the spring main stage, the musical version of
Alice in Wonderland. Dates: Thursday, March 5 and

Preview BK
On the last day of Preview BK, incoming
freshman students wearing the tie-dyed
shirts they made in the chemistry lab
gathered for a group photo.
Bishop Kenny, formerly known as
Academic Fitness Camp, provided 87
incoming freshmen with the opportunity to acclimate to the
high school environment during three, fun-filled days this
past July.
Preview
With the help of 17 upperclassmen who served as counselors, faculty, and Principal Todd Orlando, students learned to
navigate the campus, read a schedule, and open a combination
lock – all skills needed to help lessen the first day jitters of freshman year. New friendships formed quickly as students participated in a variety of activities including a campus-wide scavenger hunt, a spirited “History of BK” trivia contest, and a faithfilled, hour-long retreat with campus minister Brad Winkler.
Counselors openly shared their high school experiences
with the campers, from appreciating the savory flavor of the
Otis Spunkmeyer cookies served at lunch, to encouraging them
to get involved in clubs, activities, and the sports programs. In
addition, members of the boys’
basketball team, NJROTC
cadets, and the cheerleaders
welcomed and challenged the
freshmen as they participated
in the Amazing (Campus) Race.
On the final day, students
proudly wore home their personally designed, tie-dyed
shirts created in the chemistry Participants in Preview BK made tie-dyed shirts in
lab under the supervision of the chemistry lab as part of the 3-day summer
science teachers Mrs. Vicki program for incoming freshman.

August 13, confident, excited, and prepared to begin the next
chapter of their lives – high school.
Andrea Salom ‘16 Semi-Finalist in Young Naturalist Competition
Junior Andrea Salom ‘16 was selected as a
semi-finalist in the 2014 Young Naturalist
Awards, a research-based science competition
for students in grades 7-12 to promote participation and communication in science. Andrea
submitted her science project, A Clean Energy
Alternative for consideration. The following is a

Naturalist Awards Competition.

On behalf of the American Museum of
Natural History we would like to congratulate
you on becoming a semi-finalist in the 2014
Young Naturalist Awards competition. Your
essay was one of over 850 essays that we
received from students throughout the United
States and Canada. The subject matter of these
essays ranged from ways to optimize biofuel, to
observing the effects of urbanization on animals, to documenting the spread of invasive
species. This year the competition was very
strong, so becoming a semi-finalist is a real
achievement. Over forty environmentalists,
museum docents, science teachers and education specialists made up our panel of judges.
Here are the comments on your entry.
Andrea, your impressive investigation of
wind power addresses a key energy issue. Your
background research provided key insights and
led you to a great question. In addition, your
detailed procedures make it easy for another
scientist to replicate your results, and you collected quite a bit of data from your experiment.
Your thorough discussion of why you got the
results you did could have been supplemented
with some tests for statistical significance. The
important thing is that you have taken the first
step in appreciating and understanding the
world around you. The scientific world needs
more inquisitive minds like yours!

Winkler was held in the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center on
May 17, 2014. Mr. Winkler is a religion teacher, coach, member of the Campus Ministry team, and husband of Mrs. Suzanne
Winkler, a fellow BK teacher and coach. What some may not have
known is that Mr. Winkler has served our country honorably for
the past 20 years as a highly decorated United States Marine.

Bishop Kenny NJROTC faculty members, Master Chief Kevin
Harris USN (Ret.) served as Master of Ceremonies at the program
and LTCOL Lynn Seckinger USMC (Ret.) presented Mr. Winkler
with his official retirement certificate and awards. Members of
the Bishop Kenny NJROTC Unit served as color guard at the ceremony attended by Mr. Winkler’s family, friends, former students,
and many members of Bishop Kenny’s administration, faculty,
and staff.
In the spirit of keeping it all in the family, after the Invocation
offered by Deacon Robert De Luca, BK graduate and retired
Gunnery Sergeant Robert Germano, Class of ‘89 addressed the
assembled guests. He spoke of the time he and Gunnery
Sergeant Winkler served together under the 4th Amphibious
Battalion and during their time in Iraq.
Brad Winkler was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1993
he graduated from Charlotte Catholic High School after which he
began his Marine Corps career at Marine Corps Recruit Depot,
Parris Island, South Carolina. Since 1994 there have been many
assignments at multiple locations including the Pentagon on
September 11, 2001, and even in the Middle East in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since his return from Iraq, Mr.
Winkler has served in the Marine Corps Reserves in support of the
Marine Corps Recruiting Command.
We are proud of Brad and his service to our country and
congratulate him and wife Suzanne on his retirement. Brad and
Suzanne are busy with their teaching and coaching activities at
Bishop Kenny. After school they are busy with three children and
have one more on the way.
NJROTC Air Rifle Team
Competitive shooting is the safest of all competitive sports because safety is taught from the moment a student enters the shooting program and
also because safety rules are strictly enforced and observed by all participants. The Bishop Kenny Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Air
Rifle Team gives students the opportunity to learn the importance of gun
safety and the potential danger involved with unsafe handling of guns.
The mission of the NJROTC Air Rifle Team is to encourage and introduce
cadets to the discipline of competitive, precision marksmanship. This is
accomplished by providing structured classroom marksmanship instruction, practical application, individual qualification, and competitive match opportunities. As members of a
highly trained group, team members gain satisfaction from being part of a precision, professional, smoothly functioning team. Thanks to a generous $5,318.00 grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation,
the Bishop Kenny NJROTC Air Rifle Team was provided with eight new compressed air T-200 Air Rifles and
slings which will give cadets on the 2014-15 team the ability to shoot a more accurate state-of-the-art air
rifle. Membership on the NJROTC Air Rifle Team is open to all academically qualified NJROTC students.

Each spring the Scholar Awards Breakfast is the forum that
allows the administration an opportunity to honor students who

This annual Engineering Competition was held in February. The competition was
comprised of designing and fabricating a ping-pong ball artillery apparatus. The
event was held in celebration of Engineering Week.

DuPont Challenge
This essay writing competition focuses on scientific and
technological developments that create solutions to
humanity’s most pressing global challenges. Essays are
submitted in the following four categories: Together, we
can… FEED the world; build a secure ENERGY future;
PROTECT people and the environment; and be
INNOVATIVE.
The DuPont Challenge has two primary objectives
– to help increase science literacy and to motivate students to excel in communicating ideas in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We are very
proud of senior Ava Long who won Honorable Mention
for the competition. Of the thousands of entries nationally, there were only 28 student winners in the Senior
High Division. Ava was the ONLY winner in the state of
Florida! Ava was awarded a US Saving Bond worth $200
and Britannica’s “The Elements” hardcover book.

Extraordinary Ministers Commissioned
T
he Rite of Commissioning Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion took place during morning Mass on August 11,
2014 in the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center. Presiding at the
Mass was Father Michael Houle, President assisted by Deacon Robert
De Luca, Campus Minister.
The newly commissioned Special Ministers of Holy Communion
were entrusted with “Administering the Eucharist, with taking communion to the sick, and with giving viaticum to the dying.” During the
homily, Father Houle reminded the Special Ministers that they must be
examples of Christian living in faith and conduct. He encouraged them
to strive to grow in holiness through this sacrament of unity and love.
“Eucharistic Ministers serve the Bishop Kenny Community by
assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion at our daily Mass
and whenever we gather for the Eucharist as a school community,”
commented Deacon Robert De Luca, Director of Campus Ministry and
Religious Education. Candidates for the ministry participate in a retreat
day held at the Marywood Retreat Center in St. Johns, Florida during
the spring of their junior year. A special feature of the training is hearing from some of the graduating seniors who share with the candidates how participating in the ministry helped them to grow deeper in
their Catholic faith.

Diocesan Religion Curriculum Changes
The Secondary Theology Curriculum Committee, made up of
administrators, teachers and campus ministers from the Diocese of St.
Augustine, met over the course of the 2012-2013 academic year to write
the standards for the newly revised religion curriculum. The new curriculum and course outlines flow from the “Framework for High School
Religious Education” published by the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops. Serving on the Diocesan Theology Committee were
Sister Suzan Foster, SSJ, St. Joseph Academy; Faye Coorpender, St. Francis
Catholic High School; Deacon Robert De Luca, Bishop Kenny High
School; Joy Pichardo, Bishop John J. Snyder High School, and Fr. Blair
Gaynes, Resurrection Catholic Church.
Mrs. Patricia Bronsard,
Superintendent of Catholic Schools, served as Committee Chairperson.
The theology curriculum is written to work in conjunction with the
Diocese of St. Augustine’s catechetical framework for lifelong faith formation. Integral to the framework within Catholic schools and in
Campus Ministry programs are the Six Tasks of Catechesis: Promoting the
Knowledge of the Faith, Liturgical Education, Moral Formation, Teaching
to Pray, Education for Community Life, and Missionary Initiation. The curriculum includes emphasis on the Sacred Scriptures and Tradition, providing student practice in the nature and contents of the Bible and the
traditions in the Magisterium and historic Church documents.
One might ask, “What is so new and different about this curriculum?” “This curriculum,” explains Deacon De Luca, “is centered on the person of Jesus and is designed to assist our youth in coming to know the
Lord and living in accord with the Truth that He has revealed to us.” He
went on to say, “additionally, this curriculum is designed to emphasize
apologetics, to help those same young people develop the necessary
skills to answer the substantial questions and challenges offered by life,
and especially by their Catholic faith.”
Campus Ministry Launches New Initiative:
T
ogether with Bishop Estévez, the Diocese of Saint
Augustine is working to implement a high school outreach program in our parishes and Catholic high schools with
the help of Newman Connection. The Office of Campus
Ministry will work collaboratively with senior religion teachers
to keep senior students connected to the Catholic Church by
uniting them with Catholic campus ministries on college
campuses throughout the United States.
Newman
Connection’s centralized referral system will allow a campus
minister to connect with the graduating Class of 2015 before
they even arrive on campus. In 2013 more than 13,000 high
school students’ names were entered in the Newman
Connection database and 24,758 high school graduates used
Newman Connection to find a Catholic presence on their college campus.
Newman Connection is a not-for-profit organization
working with high school campus ministries and 400 colleges
nationwide. They use a centralized referral system to connect
graduating high school students to their Catholic campus
ministry, allowing campus ministers to contact incoming students before they actually arrive on campus. The website is

or in the traditional hard bound format.
The Newman Connection

Where are the parties? Where is my best friend? This is where
Catholic campus ministries can be helpful and effective in
helping our graduates get ready to embrace their new life,
earn a college degree, and grow in their Catholic faith.
The graduating Class of 2014 had a chance to meet with
newly ordained Father Blair Gaynes who serves the diocese as
Diocesan Director of Catholic College Campus Ministries.
During his meetings in small groups, Father Blair encouraged
the students to connect with their college campus ministry as
a help to adjust to the many changes and challenges of college life. Additionally, our own graduate Samantha Farmand
(now working at St. Augustine Catholic Center, UF) addressed
the Class of 2014 graduating seniors on the topic of the
importance of connecting with peers who share our faith and
values during our college years. We look forward to Father
Blair Gaynes and Samantha Farmand returning to BK to meet
with the Class of 2015.

Students Travel to Washington DC
uring Easter Break in April, six eager students traveled to
Washington, DC with Mr. Michael Broach ‘99, chair of the
Social Studies department, as part of an inaugural Social
Studies travel opportunity to explore history in person. The
four-day trip included visits to all of the major monuments
and memorials in Washington, the Arlington National
Cemetery, several Smithsonian museums, the National
Archives, Mount Vernon, Old Alexandria, the National Zoo to
see the world-famous pandas, the Air and Space Annex in
Northern Virginia, and a tour of the Capitol. In addition to
these ventures, students attended Mass on Holy Thursday at
Historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria and Good
Friday at St. Peter’s on Capitol Hill, presided by Cardinal
McCarrick, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington.

Students genuinely enjoyed their experience and listened intently to the tour director and guides at each
venue. They asked questions, took numerous pictures and
demonstrated a genuine excitement for learning. As
Michael Broach reports, “This was truly the best experience
of my teaching career. Nothing can be more rewarding as
a teacher than to see your students excited about what
they are learning. The best moment for me was watching
all six of them hovering over the actual Declaration of
Independence, carefully examining every detail and referring
to it as ‘cool.’ ” The trip to Washington was certainly a memorable learning experience for each of these students and
for the teacher, too!
The Social Studies department will offer another travel
opportunity next spring with a four-day trip to Historic Boston. The trip is open
to students in grades 9-12 and is coordinated through Education First’s Explore
America program. The program tuition includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, a dedicated coach bus for transport to and from venues, a tour director who remains with the group throughout the trip, overnight security, meals,
backpacks, admission fees, and additional materials. For more information, please

n May, the 2014 Bishop Kenny Crusader yearbook
staff successfully completed and distributed the
62nd edition of the Crusader Yearbook entitled Déjà Vu.
Each year the yearbook staff receives critiques and
judges’ scores on the publication from national journalism associations. The 416 page yearbook is rated
and classified, taking into consideration school demographics and production processes, and the publication receives placement awards based on total numerical scores of the judges.

SUMMER CAMPUS at BK
Campers at the
2nd annual CampUs
held in June
he 2nd annual CampUs, a creative camp for rising sixth, seventh,
and eighth graders from throughout the Diocese was held in June.
The most popular of last year’s camp activities were offered again this
year including cooking, music, art, and wacky science. In addition to
those favorite themes, campers spent a day in the television production studio learning how to work with multimedia including photography and video. Each day campers rotate to a different counselor so
that, at the end of the week, each has had a day-long experience of
every activity.

Beautiful chalk and paint artwork inspired by the underwater
world helped develop the inner artist in this year’s camp participants.
Campers also learned how to play instruments and took part in an outdoor marching drum line entertaining everyone during the mid-day
break. Budding chefs spent a day in the kitchen making delicious fresh
pretzels, cupcakes decorated with fondant and, at the end of the day,
pizza bread – the camp favorite! Many of these goodies were in
demand by fellow campers and counselors! Wacky science kept the
camper’s attention by revealing the mysteries of science with amazing
and fun experiments. Finally, in the multimedia class, campers made
videos, took pictures, and mixed audio sounds to create digital creations starring themselves. Much to the delight of the campers and
counselors, the videos were shown daily during the lunch period.
CampUs provides a great opportunity for middle school-age students to visit the BK campus, participate in a variety of creative and fun

Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny football team had another great
season in 2013 by qualifying for the state playoffs for the
fifth year in a row and advancing to the Regional semi-finals
in Class 5A. The Crusaders capped an undefeated regular
season by winning their third district title in the past four
years and finishing the regular season ranked #4 in Class 5A.
The 2013 season was highlighted with a last second season
opening victory over Bartram Trail and convincing district
victories over Ribault and Baker County. The Crusaders
opened the post season with a playoff victory over Palatka,
but the season came to an abrupt end with a home loss to
eventual state runner-up Clay High School in a record-setting
offensive display by both teams. The 2013 team says farewell
to 18 outstanding seniors who have helped build Kenny football into one of the top programs in the area. These seniors
have amassed a 37 and 9 record over the past four seasons,
including three district championships. The Crusaders hope to
continue to build upon this success in 2014 and have a strong
group of underclassmen that return in the fall.
The 2013 team had several individual players that
received recognition and awards. Senior quarterback John
Wolford was named to the Parade Magazine and Max Preps
All-American teams. He was also a first-team All-State selection along with junior wide receiver Charles Wade. Junior
offensive tackle Tyler Jordan was named second-team AllState. Wolford was also chosen as the Florida Times-Union’s
offensive player of the year in 2013. Charles Wade and Tyler
Jordan were named first and second team All-First Coast,
respectively. Senior running back Cam Singletary and junior
wide receiver Anthony Farmand were named honorable
mention All-First Coast selections. Wolford, Wade, and
Jordan were also first-team All-District selections, and
Singletary and Farmand were named as honorable mention
selections. Quarterback John Wolford also concluded a
record-setting career by surpassing 5 different career passing records for the state of Florida.
The 2013 Bishop Kenny JV football team also completed a successful season finishing with a record of 2 wins and
4 losses. The Freshman football team went 0 and 4, but
gained valuable experience with most players playing tackle football for the first time. The Crusader program continues to have strong numbers with 123 boys participating in
2013. The future of Kenny football looks bright with a number of exciting underclassmen ready to excel in 2014.

Coach’s Comments:
The boys’ cross country team had another excellent season. The
team was led by senior David Yarborough who ran a season-best time of
16:23 and placed 11th at the 2A State Championship Meet. David led a
strong team of varsity runners, including junior Husam Ossi, senior Alec
Sharpe, sophomore Mason Gerry, senior Erik Sampayo, senior Rhett Butler,
and junior Brad Franco to a regular season team victory at the FSU
Invitational. In the post-season the varsity seven claimed the District
Championship, the Regional Championship, and was the Class 2A State
Runner-up. David Yarborough and Rhett Butler will continue their running careers in college at Florida Southern University and Berry College,
respectively. The Bishop Kenny boys’ cross country team returns in 2014
with an experienced roster with great depth, and they look to use that
depth to reclaim the top spot in the state and to compete for a 9th State
title in 2014.

Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny girls’ cross country team continued their tradition of excellence in the 2013 season. Preparations began in early June
with morning conditioning starting at 6:30 four days a week. In July, the
team headed for the North Carolina mountains for their annual training
trip to the Brevard Distance Running Camp. By the time they arrived at
the starting line at Ridgeview High School for the first meet of the season, they were ready to go.
In spite of losing many top seniors from the year before, the 2013
team challenged themselves to establish their own mark. Led by seniors Danielle Hartless, Bridget Reid and Annie Kennedy, the team managed to do just that. New to the varsity squad were senior Macy May
and juniors Raegan Gruber and Catherine Darling with several others
eager to step in.
The team finished runner-up to eventual state champion Bolles at
the district meet and was just edged out to finish third in the region
meet. Two of the top seven came down with a sudden illness 24 hours
before the state meet. Nevertheless, runners Catherine Darling and
Haley O’Neill stepped in with significant PRs to lead the team to a seventh overall in 2A in the state.
With one of the largest senior squads set to graduate at the end of
the year, it’s clear that next year’s team will have their work cut out for
them. Nevertheless, with the grit and determination they’ve shown
thus far, it is more than apparent that they’re well prepared to meet the
challenges and expectations that come with being a runner on the
Bishop Kenny girls’ cross country team.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2013 volleyball team had a historic season, winning Districts
and Regionals and competing at State. The team had the best Bishop
Kenny volleyball record in history with 28 wins and 3 losses. For the second time in Kenny volleyball history a player was named “First Coast
Player of the Year” and the team had six players make an All-First Coast
Team. The team was led by two seniors, Erin Bak and Bre Edwards and
five juniors, Nadine Williams, Sophia Liguori, Denvyr Tyler-Palmer, Molly
Burkhardt, and Natalie Chebi. Both seniors pushed themselves on and
off the court enabling us to return to the State Final Four while achieving Florida Bright Future Scholarships. Junior outside hitter Nadine
Williams received the highest honor in Jacksonville and was name the
2013“First Coast Player of the Year”. Nadine led the team offensively with
242 kills, was second in digs with 220, and accumulated 31 aces and 193
service points. Junior outside hitter Denvyr Tyler-Palmer and 1st team
All-First Coast player was also a key contributor to the offense and accumulated 241 kills, 34 aces and 239 service points. Our defensive leader
and 3rd team All-First Coast player was junior libero Sophie Liguori who
led in digs with 365 and receptions with 423. Sharing a dual role as setter and hitter 1st team All-City player Molly Burkhardt led the team in
assists with 493, had 167 kills, 58 service aces, 195 service points and 193
digs. Junior, Natalie Chebi who was an honorable mention All-City player was second in assists with 408, second in aces with 41 and led the
team in service points with 255. All members of the 2013 volleyball
team enabled the team to achieve their goals through hard work, dedication, and determination.
Additionally, we are very proud to announce that Bre Edwards will
be continuing her volleyball career at Florida State University where she
will compete in sand volleyball.
The volleyball team would like to thank the Bishop Kenny administrators and staff for their help and support, along with the Booster Club
and JOI for making this year a success. We would also like to thank the
parents for their support and dedication and all the fans, sponsors, and
Bishop Kenny Community for helping us to achieve our goals. We look
forward to another great and successful season in 2014.

The boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving teams had an outstanding and colorful season in the fall of 2013. With the addition of first time
swimming senior boys, there was never a dull moment. And, our captains, Kayla Schilling and Jonathan Chiotti, helped lead the team to
many victories. Some notable meets included the Catholic State meet
where the girls came in 2nd place and the Catholic Tri-Meet where our
17 seniors were honored. The girls excelled in the State Championship
series, coming in a close 2nd in the district, placing 3rd in the region, and
6th overall in the Class 2A finals. The boys did not go unnoticed, placing
4th in the district and 13th in the region.
The top girl performers for the swim team included Lyndsea Lam,
Kandes Soapes, Emma Devine, Ali Devine, Ashley Bucher, Kayla Schilling,
and McKenna DeBever. The outstanding boys this season were Jack
Melville, Joseph Pohlgeers, and Jonathan Chiotti. Both of the divers –
Stefani Bucher and Joseph Connelly – had excellent seasons as well,
placing 16th and 18th, respectively, in the State final.

Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny boys’ golf team was able to advance to the
Florida High School Athletic Association Regional Tournament for the
third season in a row. The team played an incredibly difficult schedule
this past season in an effort to size up the competition and compare
how other teams played the game. This inevitably helped prepare the
boys for the post season tournaments.
The team was so competitive this year that, prior to post season
play, the team needed to conduct a play-off to determine who would
qualify for post-season play. Over the course of the past season, the
team achieved its second-lowest score at the district tournament since
the 2009-2010 school year. The team had three golfers finish in the top
ten at the district tournament. Senior Davis Roche finished in second
place with a score of 71. Senior Spencer Turner finished in fourth place
with a score of 74. Sophomore Jake Franco finished in tenth place with
a score of 81. Rounding out the top 5 scorers at district play was junior
Andrew Tucker, and senior Trey Lynch.
One of the main goals for the boys who will be returning for the
2014-2015 season is to win the district championship as they did two
seasons ago. The coaching staff is expecting all potential golf team candidates to play as much tournament golf as they can over the summer.
The team will be holding tryouts on the first day the Florida High School
Athletic Association allows teams to practice in early August before the
school year begins.

The Bishop Kenny girls’ golf team was able to advance to the

Senior captain Vanessa Navarro proved to be a true leader
and captain by encouraging and motivating her underclassmen teammates throughout the regular and post seasons.
The top five scorers for the girls’ team this year and
played in the state-series tournament were senior, Vanessa
Navarro; junior, Julie Goodwin; junior, Maggie Lynch; sophomore, Katelyn McCallum; and sophomore, Ashley Carlisle.
The girls who will be returning for the 2014-2015 season are capable of making a run at a sixth consecutive
advancement to the regional tournament. The coaching
staff will be looking for rising seniors to continue the leadership of previous captains. The other underclassmen will
be expected to continue to foster a positive team spirit and
have continued score improvement.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2013-14 Crusaders used the experience of the
previous year’s Final Four run to help propel themselves to
another great journey of their own. With many new faces
in the lineup, the team emphasized a more perimeter-oriented attack and grew tremendously over the course of the
season. The Crusaders jumped out to an impressive 11-0
start for the season, including an exciting road win against
eventual 6A State Semifinalist Ed White. They had a successful holiday break, gaining a berth in the Father Lopez
Christmas Tournament championship game before losing
to a strong First Academy squad. They completed the regular season with a classic 80-77 overtime loss to an undefeated Bolles team on Senior Night in front of a packed
gym. Entering the district tournament as the #2 seed, the
Crusaders knew they would have a tough battle ahead
playing at Baker County. After defeating a tough Terry
Parker squad in the semifinals, they had to face an excellent
Baker County team in their home gym. In another tremendous battle, the Crusaders pulled out an amazing 62-61
overtime victory as Christian Carlyle sealed the win with 2
free throws with one second left in the game. The win propelled the team into its third consecutive appearance in
the Regional Tournament, where it defeated Palatka in the
opening round. They faced Baker County again in the
semifinals, this time using a friendly John A. Baldwin
Athletic Center crowd to assist them in securing another
hard-earned victory. Making its 2nd straight appearance in
the Regional Finals, the team traveled to Panama City
before losing to an excellent Rutherford team.
The 2013-14 Crusaders were led by Korey McDougald,
Keeshaun King, Christian Carlyle, Shaggy Allmond, Chris
Joyce, Ben DeVries, and Keenan Maher. The strong supporting cast included Alex Nutter, Chase Driscoll, Justin Goldfeder,
Ryan Gallagher, Joseph Churn, Gino Smith, and Lou Walsh.
Manager Robert Costa provided great support for the team
all season long as well. The squad leaves its mark as a group
that continued to get better every day and played its best
basketball of the season at the perfect time. They were a
group whose whole was truly greater than the sum of its
parts, and really epitomized the meaning of the word “team”.
Their accomplishments will be remembered for a long time
and continue to strengthen the foundation of our program.

The 2013-2014 varsity girls’ basketball team finished the season
strong with an overall record of 15-14. The girls were faced with a difficult
schedule this season. The girls defeated University Christian on December
6th to give them the momentum they needed to have a successful season. From that point they went on to win the St. Joseph Academy
Christmas Tournament defeating Bishop Moore. For the tournament
Alexis Nunez was named Team MVP and All-Tournament Team. To continue on the winning streak, the girls finished 3-1 in district play. On senior night, the girls defeated Tampa Catholic with a buzzer beater by sophomore Rachel Rukab. On January 31, 2014 the girls defeated Baker County
in the District Championship. From there the girls hosted the first round
of the regional tournament and defeated Ponte Vedra in front of their
home crowd. Hosting the second round of the tournament against
Palatka, the girls ended their run at the state title. After the season, Alexis
Nunez was named FACA Class 5A Player of the Year. The team was led by
senior captains Olivia Coker, Brooke Gunlock, and Hope Harrison. The roster also included juniors Emily Bradley, Lyndsea Lam, Emily Myslinski,
Alexis Nunez, and Katie Rose, sophomores Brenna Edwards, Natalie Hart,
Jade King, Nicole Marchigiano, Maria Parker, and Rachel Rukab, and freshman Isa Horning. Each player made great contributions to make this season a success. The coaching staff wishes the three seniors the best of luck
in college and we look forward to the upcoming season.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2013-2014 season saw change and challenges for the
Crusader boys’ soccer program. After four years as the head coach,
Roye Locklear handed the reins over to his key assistant for the past
two years, John Auldridge. Coach Auldridge, in his first season as the
head coach of the boys’soccer program, was faced with a number of
challenges and opportunities.
Led by a core of returning starters - senior Johnny Azar, junior
Trey Langlois, and senior Sam Jaramillo, the Crusaders built upon
returning varsity players senior John Boynton, senior Austin Shott,
junior Andrew Tucker, and sophomore David Bishop – along with
newcomers to varsity, senior Joe Connelly, junior Bradley Franco, and
freshman John Darling rounding out the core starting lineup. Senior
Mario Cerpa, senior Tandat Nguyen, junior Adrian Navotas, junior
Kyle Mayer, and sophomore Jake Franco, made key contributions to
the campaign. For the first time in memory, four freshmen - Mark
Jubani, Charlie Wilkinson, Jack McVearry, and John Darling - made
the varsity squad and contributed heavily during the season.
With the reorganization of districts in boys’ soccer, the
Crusaders found themselves in one of the toughest districts (2A-4) in
the State (Bolles, Episcopal, Providence, Bishop Snyder, Trinity, and
Baldwin). The program has continued to grow over the past three
years in the style of play and approach. to the game. During the
course of the 2013-2014 season, the Crusaders dominated play in
most of their matches and led in most statistical columns but
one…scoring. The boys’ soccer program posted an amazing season
average of 74% ball possession, led opponents in attempts on goal by a
margin of 2-1, led in all other categories (except Cards/penalties
given)…except scoring. We struggled to score on a number of occasions

but were never out of a match and never gave up until the final whistle.
For the season’s first match play the Crusaders travelled to Fleming
Island to take on the eventual State Finalist in 4A. In a hard-fought battle, the Crusaders lost 4-0. But the team fought back during the season
to beat Episcopal twice during the season - for the first time in 3 years
- posting a win and a tie against Bishop Snyder, and a loss and a tie
against Providence. The Crusaders finished district play with two wins
against both Baldwin and Trinity. But the two earlier ties made for a difficult district seeding.
With an initial 6-1 win over Bishop Snyder in the District tournament, the Crusaders would face the first seed Bolles in the District
semi-finals. Playing Bolles for a third time in a season, it was a close
and hard-fought match. But the Crusaders, while dominating play,
shots on goal, and overall control of the match could not put in
enough goals in the last few minutes. With the match tied at halftime, it looked like the Crusaders were going to find the magic to
move on to the District finals. However, in the final minutes of the
match, the Crusaders gave up a penalty kick to Bolles making the
score 2-1. The Crusaders put a full-on attack in the final minutes, but
with a stolen ball and a breakaway, Bolles scored its final goal with
just a few minutes remaining and put the match out of reach for the
Crusaders with a final score of 3-1.
The team made substantial progress during the season both on
and off the field. The team attended Mass together one a week this year
and adopted a scripture verse for the season “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ…”
Philippians 1:27. The 2014-2015 season will see twelve returning varsity
players and a very competitive boys’ soccer program.
awed by this collection of young women. They are a pleasure to be
around and an honor to coach. What I’ll remember about this season
is how well the two teams came together. During past seasons, I have
seen the JV and varsity teams behave as if they are two separate entities. What emerged this year was a program. Instead of shying away
from training against the varsity players, the JV players took the challenge and often pushed varsity. Instead of looking down on them as
inferior, this varsity team appeared to embrace helping the younger
players learn how to play the game at a higher level. They embraced
showing them what it means to wear a Bishop Kenny uniform.
What I’ll remember about this season, and this senior class in
particular, is that I think we’ve finally turned the corner and become
a program. For the last 8 years, that’s what I’ve hoped to have as a
head coach. Not two separate teams that happen to wear the same
jersey, but one program doing what it can to best represent Bishop
Kenny on the soccer pitch.
I have the utmost confidence that we can build on the foundation laid this season. We knew very quickly in tryouts, that we had a
great deal of talent, probably more than I ever seen. I have confidence
that the foundation for success in the future was built this year.
On behalf of the coaches, I thank these young women for their
hard work this year. I hope they have created memories and friendships they will cherish for years to come. To the seniors, replacing our
defense and two-thirds of our midfield will be a challenge for us next
season, but you have pushed this program and set us up for success.
I thank you for a great four years. I wish you nothing but success in
all that you do in college and beyond.

The Bishop Kenny Crusader baseball team completed
their 2014 season with a District record of 5-3 and an overall
mark of 13-12. The year was filled with a series of highs and
lows. The team played hard throughout the year and
achieved four and five game winning streaks.
Unfortunately, the season ended with a disappointing loss
in the District semi-finals.
This year’s team was unusually young with only three
seniors. The underclassmen gained valuable experience
which will hopefully help them recapture the District
championship next year. The team and coaching staff
would like to thank each of our graduating seniors – Collin
Morrill, Kory Molter, and Kyle Molter. These young men
made key contributions and provided valuable leadership
throughout the year.

Spring Sports 2013-2014
Coach’s Comments:
The 2013-2014 Bishop Kenny wrestling team had a
historic season. They started training in September as a
young group and emerged in February as a top ten in the
North Florida all classification power poll. They captured
2nd place in the Rob Bierman Memorial Invitational at the
mid-point of the season. Led by seniors Nate Caron, Logan
Boté, Ethan Yates, and Kuba Kaszuba, Bishop Kenny went
into the District Tournament with a chance to make history. The team placed seven wrestlers in the finals. District
Champions Nick Toney, Nate Caron, Kuba Kaszuba, and
Ethan Yates, helped secure the first District team title in 16
years! Nicky Toney and Kuba Kaszuba both advanced to
the Regional finals with Kuba emerging as a Regional
Champion. Both Nick and Kuba qualified to go to
Lakeland, Florida and wrestle in the State Tournament.
Kuba Kaszuba became only the third wrestler in Bishop
Kenny history to advance to the finals in the State
Tournament. With his 2nd place finish, he was invited the
following week to wrestle in the “All Class Tournament”
against all the place winners in all the classifications. Truly
a tournament of the best in the State, Kuba placed third
and received scholarship money from USA Wrestling.

(All-State), Kyle Black (District Runner-up), Alex Condor
(District Runner-up) and Ryan Timmons (District Runner-up).

Coach’s Comments:
Girls’ Tennis:
The girls had a good mix of returning lettermen and outstanding
newcomers to the team this year. The team finished the season with a
9-6 record. Carrigan Blanchard (FR) and Cameron Blanchard (FR) had a
strong season playing #1 and #2 singles as well as #1 doubles this year.
Katie Reid (SR), Gabby Haddad (JR), Caroline Nimnicht (SR), and Liz
Norton (SR) were returning lettermen that rounded out the starting lineup. Haley O’Neill (SR) improved throughout the season and led the
team with a 10-4 record. Other varsity letter winners were Anna Moore
(SR), Macy May (SR), Whitney Chefan (SR), Julie Moore (SR), Natalie Deen
(FR), and Mary McGowan (FR). The girls lost to Stanton in a playoff to
determine which team would advance in the state playoffs. At Districts
Cameron Blanchard and Carrigan Blanchard made it to the finals in both
singles and doubles. Haley O’Neill also played in the singles finals at
Districts. Our many graduating seniors will be missed next year. We
have a solid foundation of good, young players with a lot of potential to
build next year’s team around.
Boys’ Tennis:
The boy’s tennis team had a 9-6 record this season. The team had a
good group of returning players and new players. Jack Amthor (SR) and
Will Thompson (SO) anchored down the number one and two spots all
season. Jack and Will played #1 doubles as well. Will Thompson led the
team with 18 wins this season. Returning lettermen Adrian Navotas (JR),
Dylan Alson (SR) and Michael Dobinski (SR) anchored the Crusaders
starting line-up. Newcomers Trey Lynch (SR), Johnny Azar (SR), Joe
Pohlgeers (SO), Alejandro Hernandez (SO) and Tyler Chin (FR) provided
the team with many key wins in both singles and doubles. The team
had a good showing in Districts finishing third behind Bolles and
Stanton. Adrian Navotas advanced to the #3 singles final and Michael
Dobinski and Dylan Alson made the #2 doubles finals. Next year’s team
will be a young team built around its four returning lettermen.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2014 track season saw great performances from a young girls’
team and a veteran boys’ team. The girls’ team earned the District
Runner-up in 2014, and advanced all three relay teams, 4x100, 4x400, and
4x800 to the Regional Championship. From Regions, the girls qualified
three individuals to the State Meet. Freshman Grace Gerry finished 10th
in the 800m, junior Tanner Cormier placed 11th in the 100m high hurdles,
and senior Amber Harris placed 11th in the discus and 14th in shot put.
The boys had another impressive season finishing as the District
Runner-up in a close battle with Bolles, and finishing 6th at the Regional
Championship. At the Class 2A State Meet, the boys’ 4x800m relay team
began the day with a season best time and claimed 3rd place from the
slow heat. The 4x800m relay was led by senior Erik Sampayo, joined by
sophomore Mason Gerry, senior Sam Jaramillo, and anchored by

David Yarborough. Junior Reid Harris had an outstanding day in diffi-
cult weather conditions to place 3rd in the discus, and junior David Bell also
earned All-State honors in the Pole Vault, placing 2nd. During the evening’s
final races, David Yarborough qualified as an individual in the 1600m run,
placing 7th, while senior Alec Sharpe placed 13th in the 3200m run. The
boys’ team recorded another great team finish at the Class 2A State
Championship meet, earning 5th place with a total of 22 points. Additionally,
Cody Rose set a new school record in the Long Jump with a mark of 22’8”, and
David Bell shattered the Pole Vault record with a jump of 15’6”this season.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2014 softball team finished the season with high expectations
for 2015. Kenny softball has a strong group of returners with two to
three years of varsity level playing experience, led by senior Christina
Cunningham. Returning juniors Natalie Hart and Claire Doyle, who led
the team both defensively and offensively in 2014, will help provide the
consistency and leadership needed to get this team to the next level.
The team played one of the toughest schedules in the city - against 14
of the most competitive teams in Northeast Florida while overcoming
many obstacles throughout the season. We will miss our seniors,
Kennedy Eichner and Sarah Scribbins, as they move on to college. We
are excited for next season. As a program we are looking forward to the
talent coming up the pipeline with a strong season by the junior varsity
team who finished the season with a winning record. This allows us to
grow and gain additional experience and playing time for more players.
The Kenny softball team would like to thank Bishop Kenny for their
help and support, along with the Booster Club and JOI for making this
year a success. We would also like to thank all of the parents, fans, sponsors, and Bishop Kenny community for helping us with an opportunity
to achieve our goals. We look forward to an even better season in 2015.
WEIGHTLIFTING

Zachary Gushanas qualified for the state weightlifting meet at 183 lbs.
Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny weightlifting team ended the 2013 season with
a dual meet record of 3 wins and 5 losses. The 2013 team had nine individual lifters who qualified for the Regional meet including: Royce Reyes
(129 lbs), Austin Cannington (139 lbs), Kevin Vogt (154 lbs), Tim Bianco
(169 lbs), Alfredo Nelson (169 lbs), Josh Johnson (199 lbs), Zachary
Gushanas (183 lbs), Greg Santos (219 lbs), and Robert Costa (HWT).
Sophomore Zachary Gushanas at 183 lbs also qualified for the state
weightlifting meet which was held at the Kissimmee Civic Center in April.
The Crusaders return an experienced group of lifters in 2015 and
hope to build on this year’s success.
John Wolford to Start at Wake Forest
Bishop Kenny’s record-setting quarterback, John Wolford ‘14, will be
thrilling the fans in Winston-Salem as the starting quarterback for the Wake
Forest Demon Deacons this year. This will be the first time since 1974 that
Wake Forest has started a true freshman at the position.
Wolford set several state high school records during his four years at
Bishop Kenny including passing yards (10,621), touchdown passes (126), total
touchdowns responsible for (162), total offense (13,403), and completions
(706). John led the Crusaders to two unbeaten regular seasons in 2011 and
2013 and was named the Florida Times Union 2013 Super 24 Player of the Year.
We wish John much success in his college career.

Sportsmanship Award
I
n recognition of the vital role good sportsmanship plays in shaping today’s studentathletes, the Florida High School Athletic
Association (FHSAA) announced the recipients of this year’s Fred E. Rozelle
Sportsmanship Awards. The award honors
schools whose athletic teams demonstrated
exemplary sportsmanship during the 20132014 regular season and FHSAA State Series.
This year 21 high schools and three middle
schools received the prestigious award.
“Every chance we get, we emphasize to
our student-athletes that the heart and soul
of high school athletics is sportsmanship.
Honoring these special schools with a Rozelle
Award is our way of telling them and their
outstanding student-athletes that they have
done things the right way,” said FHSAA
Executive Director Dr. Roger Dearing.
The award, presented annually since
1991, is named in honor of FHSAA
Commissioner Emeritus Fred E. Rozelle. It is
presented to one school in each classification
whose total sports program best exemplifies
the qualities of sportsmanship as demonstrated by its coaches, players, and spectators. Criteria for selection of the winners
includes programs and activities implemented within the school and community to promote sportsmanship, the number and type of
unsportsmanlike ejections, the number and
type of exceptional sportsmanship reports,
and the source of the nomination.
Section winners will each receive
$500 and a commemorative plaque. Each
overall winner will receive an additional
$2,500 and a larger plaque.

Crusader Cheerleaders Prepare
for 2014-15 Season
T
he Varsity and JV cheerleading teams traveled downstate to
attend the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) camp at St.
Petersburg in August. The camp provided an opportunity for the
team to build camaraderie while preparing for the upcoming football
season. In the words of head coach and former BK cheerleader Brooke
Galloway, “It was a wonderful experience for all forty girls and we even
brought home some hardware!”

learned at camp, a fifth place finish in the Extreme Routine, and
an All-Around Superior trophy.

Approximately 400 BK graduates and family members attended
an alumni picnic on August 29. 4 Rivers Smokehouse, owned by
John Rivers '83, catered the event that drew graduates spanning
all 63 of BK's graduating classes. The event was scheduled on the
evening of the first Crusader football game of the season. Prior to
kickoff, Bishop Felipe Estévez was on hand, along with Rev. Michael
Houle, to bless the impressive new facilities at William Johnston
Stadium. The Crusaders played their first home game of the year
against Bartram Trail, winning by a score of 23-20.

Christina Gregson Scholarship
Mr. Nathan Jubran ‘18 is the winner of the 2nd
annual Christina Gregson Memorial Scholarship at
Bishop Kenny High School. Nathan, a graduate of
Holy Family Catholic School, won the scholarship by
submittinghissuccessfulapplicationandessayforthe
one-time, $1000 scholarship.
Christina Gregson was a much-loved member of
the Bishop Kenny Class of 2005. The scholarship, a gift
of the Gregson family, has been established in memory and honor of Christina’s great passion for life.
Christina fought a courageous battle with Muscular
Dystrophy and has taught us all the meaning of
courage and strength. According to the application,
and in her parents words,“Her remarkable faith, positive attitude, graceful and humble heart has affected
our outlook on life that will remain forever.” Her
Catholic religion and Catholic education were very
important to her, as well as her volunteer work at
DOSA Camps and the Mayo Clinic. It is for these reasonsthatthescholarshiphasbeensetupatChristina’s
alma mater where she was so happy and successful
for four years.
According to the criteria governing the scholarship, candidates must write a brief paragraph describing how they are coping with or have overcome a lifechallenging adversity and include themes including:
• Living with a positive attitude
• Evidence of compassion and concern for others
• Involvement in school or out-of-school activities
• Volunteer involvement
We are grateful to the Gregson family for their

The Bishop Kenny Baseball Complex
Grille in St. Nicholas and several other BK graduates are working
on an informal event to honor the alumni baseball players; specifically those who achieved All-City, County, or State recognition
since Bishop Kenny’s first team in 1952. Preliminary plans call for
a weekend in late November or early December 2015 to unveil
the honoree's names which will be displayed on a permanent
recognition board at the BK baseball complex. A brief ceremony
at BK will be followed by a casual dinner at The Mudville Grille.
The committee will formulate a program to include a guest

BK graduate Gontran Celerier ‘65 is spearheading a project
that will result in a complete, permanent, and accurate history of
the Crusader baseball program’s individual player achievement
records. According to Bishop Kenny Athletic Director and former
head baseball Coach Bob West, “Until Gontran came forward to
try to fill in the blanks we had no immediate plans to try to update
our earliest records of player achievement. This will be a great
service to the baseball program and will be appreciated by many
of our former players.”
As of this writing Mr. Celerier
has spent a great deal of time searching the microfiche records of the
Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville
Journal, and Orlando Sentinel looking to fill in the blanks - especially for

records are most sporadic. An AllCity player on the 1965 Crusader
Baseball team, Mr. Celerier lives in
Slidell, Louisiana but maintains his
high school friendships and life-long
loyalty to the Crusaders. He will continue to travel to Jacksonville to complete his research and participate in
the planning of an event to celebrate
the completion of this project.

Alumni Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship
The annual Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented to
Isabel Devore-Suazo as part of the 8th grade graduation program at
Christ the King School in June. Mrs. Elizabeth McGovern, one of Julie’s
teachers at Christ the King, made the presentation to Isabel who is now
a freshman at Bishop Kenny. The scholarship, which was established in
memory of Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and
member of the BK Class of 1988, is awarded annually to a deserving
graduating 8th grade Christ the King student. The student is awarded
a one-time $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at BKHS.
Julie Joseph married Ronald Burke while attending college. They
had two children, Kaylee, a 2010 BK graduate, who is now a senior at
Florida State University, and a son Ronnie, a senior at BK. Julie passed
away in 2004 after suffering complications from a heart condition.
Julie’s parents, Donna and Joe Joseph BK‘65, and husband, Ronnie
Burke, established this scholarship to honor Julie’s life and memory in a
way she would want. Julie was continually helping others to achieve
their goals, giving to others, and serving her church, school, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a shining
example of God’s love.
Isabel demonstrates many of the same qualities as Julie. She has
Cross Country Alumni Reunite
to Participate in Relay
Across the country, 200-mile running relays are held in
some of the country’s most scenic locations. These roughly
24-hour races consist of 12 teammates in two vans of six, running three legs each for a total of thirty-six legs.
For the past several years a number of Bishop Kenny’s
Cross Country alumni have discussed teaming up for one of
these races. This year the schedules aligned to make it a reality. The team agreed to tackle the original Ragnar Relay in and
around Park City, Utah on June 27-28 - two hundred miles
uphill at 7-10 thousand feet of altitude!
Five members of the 12-person team were BK alumni.

a positive attitude about life and makes the most of each day by her
service to others, her love of God, and involvement in her community.
She is truly a role model for other young people.

Class of 1965 Visits Sr. Thomas Joseph, SSJ
n a rainy Thursday in May, a
group of ladies from the Class
of ‘65 spent the day in St.
Augustine with Sister Thomas Joseph
McGoldrick, SSJ. Sister was kind
enough to give us a tour of the Father
Miguel O'Reilly House Museum which
she was instrumental in developing.
The museum houses many of the artifacts that the Diocese of St. Augustine
is privileged to own, along with some
information about the history of the
Sisters of St. Joseph in Florida.

Archives. She made the tour even

and faces of friends from the past.
After spending several hours at the O'Reilly House and the Archives, the
group took Sister Thomas Joseph, Sister Catherine, Sister Josepha, and Sister
Carol Wells to lunch at Le Pavillon Restaurant where everyone continued to
share stories of our wonderful years at Bishop Kenny. The consensus of the
group was that the Sisters of St. Joseph have been a blessing in all of our lives.

Elizabeth Tucker ‘10 Nominated for 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year Award
During her collegiate career Elizabeth also volunteered at many
local, regional, and even national community service projects
including the Irish Fight for Life program, which pairs student-athletes with patients in the pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit at
South Bend's Memorial Hospital. She also participated in the
Adopt-a-Family, Ronald McDonald House, Pediatric Christmas
Party and Perley Elementary Tutor programs. She also volunteered
for the Notre Dame Tax Assistance Program, which helps lowincome and disabled citizens with the preparation of their tax
returns.
Elizabeth Tucker, Valedictorian of the Bishop Kenny Class of
2010, has been nominated by the Atlantic Coast Conference
(ACC) for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Elizabeth
graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May with a
Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Notre Dame's
Mendoza College of Business.
The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors graduating
female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves
throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic
achievement, athletic excellence, service, and leadership. The
2014 NCAA Woman of the Year will be honored, along with the
top 30 candidates, during a ceremony on October 19 in
Indianapolis.
Elizabeth comes from a long line of Bishop Kenny and
Notre Dame Graduates. Her parents, Julie and John Tucker, BK ‘75,
met at Notre Dame, and her older sister Kate, BK‘08 and Notre Dame
’12, is a medical student at Georgetown. Not at Notre Dame, and an
excellent student also, Elizabeth’s brother John, BK ‘12, currently
attends West Point. Brother Andrew is a senior at Bishop Kenny and the
youngest, Patrick, attends Assumption Catholic School.
Elizabeth Tucker BK’10 is
the ACC nominee for the
2014 NCAA Woman of
the Year award.
Elizabeth is the 2014 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and
recipient of a 2014 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, as well as a
finalist for the 2014 Wooden Citizenship Cup. She served as a Notre Dame
women's soccer tri-captain for the past two seasons, helping the Fighting Irish
to four consecutive NCAA Championship berths (2010-13), including the 2010
national title and a spot in the 2012 NCAA quarterfinals. She appeared in all 92
of Notre Dame's matches during her career, starting 87 times, while finishing
with 19 goals and 14 assists.
Elizabeth has accepted a position as a consultant at McKinsey &
Company in Chicago, with an eye on pursuing graduate studies at Harvard
Business School in the near future. We wish her every success in her career and
her Woman of the Year nomination.

2014 Alumni Run
On Saturday August 9, 39 men and 52
women laced up their cross-country spikes to
compete in the annual Alumni Run. This race is
a chance for the current Bishop Kenny runners to
meet and compete against other graduates, but
not retired, Bishop Kenny cross-country runners.
In the men’s competition, seniors Hussam
Ossi, Eric Chiotti and Jimmy Kaldor led the dominating pack of current runners to a commanding and near perfect score of 17 points over the
alumni total of 42. In the women’s race, the
alumni women took payback after years of fin-

ishing behind the current runners’team. Former
runners and standouts Sarah Davis ‘10, Mary
Kate Thyfault ‘13, Bridget Reid ’14, and Danielle
Hartless ‘14 reversed the score from the men’s
race. Alumni Ryan Markowski ‘10 and Emily
Crissman ‘12, who are also acting as assistant
coaches, likewise posted notable finishes.
We thank all the alumni who participated
this year for attending and continuing to support
the Bishop Kenny cross-country community.

Class of 1964
On May 2nd and 3rd the
Bishop Kenny Class of 1964 held
their 50th reunion at the
Jacksonville Beach Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. As anticipated, this was one of the largest turnouts for our class in the
past few reunions with ninety-five attendees. On Friday
evening there was a Reggae band that opened the reunion
social with lively entertainment, and then a banquet was held
at Joe's Crab Shack before returning to the hotel for more
music and dancing.
50 YEARS

Again, on Saturday evening there was dancing and socializing until the last
attendees were kicked out at 12:30 AM. The class shared a great BBQ dinner catered
by Lou Bono's. The Class of 1964 is the first of the Baby-Boomers to reach their 50th
reunion.
The Friday evening event was
graced with the attendance of our
former principal Sister Thomas
Joseph, SSJ who is celebrating her
88th birthday and 70th year as a
Sister of St Joseph. During the
reunion a fundraiser for the retired
Sisters of St Joseph raised over
$18,000.00! We encourage other
classes to match our efforts for the
sisters who helped us develop our
moral compasses over 50 years ago.

representing the total of donations collected by
classmates on behalf of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Jeanette Ghioto, Mission Advancement Director for
the Sisters of St. Joseph said, “The money will help
ensure a safe quality of life for the aging Sisters at
Our Lady of Lourdes Convent.”

Jacksonville in May. There was a Friday
night social on May 30 followed by a buffet dinner on
May 31. 56 of our 245-member class plus spouses were
in attendance.

Eric Elison and our time together was dedicated to the
memory of the deceased members of our class, and to

Class of 1979
35 YEARS
The Class of 1979 held their 35th reunion on the weekend of August 1-2. The weekend event kicked off at
a causal gathering at the home of Scott and Julie Dewhurst Terrazzano. On Saturday night, members of
the Class of '79 met at Marsh Landing Country Club for a fun night of dining and dancing. We reminisced about all those
"misty water-colored memories of the way we were" and made some new memories, too.

20 YEARS
The Bishop Kenny Class of 1994 celebrated their 20th reunion on the weekend of July 1819. Classmates traveled from near and far to celebrate
the occasion and to catch up with old friends. Friday,
July 18 was a casual gathering at The Lemon Bar in
Neptune Beach.
The main event was held on Saturday, July 19 at
Fantasy Farms in Ponte Vedra Beach. Fantasy Farms is a
unique venue that includes exotic animals and a fun
indoor-outdoor bar. It was a great party and everyone
had a great time catching up with old friends! It was
also a bittersweet night as we missed our friend Mary
Russo Holm who passed away just over one year ago. In
Mary’s honor and memory, the Class of 1994 collected
donations for the Mary E. Holm Foundation that supports families in crisis and supports efforts to fight cancer.
