AN ‘HôTEL DE TOURISME’ is registered tourist
accommodation offering rooms or furnished flats for hire to people
wishing to organise their holiday by the day, by week or by month, but
for whom, apart from rare exceptions, it is not their elected domicile.
There may be a restaurant service. It is open either all year round or
only during one or several seasons. It is called a “seasonal hotel” when
the opening period does not exceed 9 months out of any one year, in
one or several periods.
A ‘RÉSIDENCE DE TOURISME’ OR
‘ R É S I D E N C E H Ô T E L I È R E ’ is commercial
tourist accommodation open either permanently or seasonally. It
is made up of groups of similar rooms or flats, situated in one big
building or in smaller buildings, available for rent either by day, by
week or by month to a tourist clientele. The Résidence cannot be their
elected domicile. It provides basic services and equipment.
A ‘Chambre d’hôtes’ welcomes guests on an informal
basis. It consists of furnished rooms in someone’s home, for receiving
paying guests, for one or several nights, with various services. The
number of rooms available for hire in the same place is limited to 5
and for a maximum of 15 people.
The ‘Chambre d’hôtes’ must be in the local resident’s principal home
and must:
• be let out by the day for tourism purposes, and be accompanied by
certain services comprising at least the provision of breakfast, sheets
and towels and a welcome by the local person; certain propose an
evening meal;
• be furnished and provide all normal, necessary items that the person
renting might need;
• have access to a toilet and bathroom equipped with a sink and either
shower or bath.

M O N TAG N E ’ receives walkers wishing to make a short stop
or a longer stay.

A ‘GÎTE DE SÉJOUR’ is a gîte with a large sleeping capacity
that can receive either individuals or groups and has all the necessary
fittings to provide a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. These
gîtes are particularly suitable for groups of friends, families, sports
clubs and charities that wish to get together for a week-end or for
holidays.
A ‘GÎTE D’ÉTAPE’ is a gîte with a large sleeping capacity
found on walking, cycling or horse-riding routes and provides for
overnight stays. It must have a kitchen area available for use by guests.
A gîte can be both a ‘gîte d’étape’ and a ‘gîte de séjour’. Whichever, it
must have a living area, sleeping areas either in dormitories or rooms
with comfortable bedding (sheets are sometimes provided), shared or
private bathrooms.
Several options may be proposed:
• self-catering: the equipped kitchen is available for use by the group.
• half- or full-board: the owner provides meals. Often the menu is
chosen ahead and is a set menu for all the guests.
A ‘GÎTE REFUGE’ is a building at altitude, isolated,
sometimes manned, not accessible to vehicles and not accessible by the
ski lift system. The idea of a refuge includes making available to users
an open, permanent space, outside those periods when it is manned.
A ‘MEUBLÉ DE TOURISME’, also called ‘gîte rural’ is a
furnished flat or studio, for the sole use of the person renting, available
to hire by tourists who stay for varying lengths of time (a day, a week, a
month …), it not being their elected domicile.
WHY DO WE HAVE LABELS?
French national parks have created a new collective mark.
Entitled “Esprit parc national” its aim is to support and
validate tourist and agricultural economic activities all the while
respecting and enhancing the local patrimony of the national parks.
“Qualité Tourisme” is a mark that denotes rigour and quality in
services provided by tourism professionals, whose aim is to
provide their clients with high quality service. Established by the
Minister for Tourism, the Qualité Tourisme mark represents a guarantee
of confidence for the consumer.
The Gîtes de France label today is the number one European
network providing accommodation with local people.
The Gîtes de France label guarantees specific comfort norms (1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5 “épis” (ears of grain)) and conformity with a national charter. All
rural Gîtes de France are classed according to their environment, their
degree of comfort and services provided, and re-evaluated at least once
every 5 years. They are checked more frequently in the event of any
problem.
The Logis de France network comprises 3200 Hotel-Restaurants,
situated all over France and Europe. All have signed up to the
quality charter. The Logis de France hotel-restaurants are divided into
three different categories: 1, 2 or 3 “cheminées”. This rigorous classification
is established from more than 260 criteria: welcome, authenticity,
comfort, security, equipment, setting … nothing is omitted. And more
importantly, nothing is definitive: a Logis can be reclassified at any time.
The Charter committee can downgrade or strike off any establishment
that does not conform to the Logis label.
You’re looking for somewhere good to eat or to enjoy the cuisine of
one of our region’s great chefs? Each Logis restaurant is classified
by “cocottes” which enables one instantly to recognise its category. This
classification reflects the restaurateur’s skill, the flavours produced and
the quality of the products used, to create satisfied clients.
There are four categories in the Logis classification, from which you can
choose the restaurant which most closely matches your wishes, mood
and budget at the time.

‘Villages Vacances” are classified Loisirs de France in accordance
with three main characteristics:
• The quality of the activities, services and entertainment for both
adults and children
• The richness of the surrounding environment

The national label “Tables & Auberges de France” aims to
promote, within France and abroad, the skill of independent
professionals practising their trade within traditional restaurants, or
hotel restaurants, and excludes chain establishments.
The Tables & Auberges de France official label guarantees quality
based on a national charter of commitments and on a baseline which
includes seven essential major conditions, to be able better to meet
consumers’ expectations: the professionalism of the business owner
or manager, the quality of the goods produced, the qualifications
of the staff, the welcome provided, facilities (equipment, comfort,
organisation), hygiene and food security.

TOURISM &
HANDICAP
The “Tourisme et Handicap” label aims to provide handicapped people
with consistent, objective information they can trust, concerning
accessibility to tourist sites and infrastructure. This concerns four main
types of handicap (motor, visual, auditory and mental). Another aim
of the label is to recognise efforts made by those tourism professionals
with regard to this specific clientele.
The label, given by the “Tourisme et Handicap” association for a period
of 5 years, renewable after checks that the various criteria are still being
met, can be granted for one, two, three or four handicaps. Since 1st
January 2012 it is attributed for a minimum of 2 handicaps. Each
handicap has its own pictogram.

At 3170m, the Écrins refuge is situated opposite the
group of mountains of the same name, culminating
at 4102m. Overlooking the Glacier Blanc, it has an
exceptional panorama.
Situated 2h30 walk from the car park at Le Pré de Mme
Carle, gateway to the high mountain area, the refuge
is easily accessible for all. Its south-facing terrace is
a wonderful meeting place for all. Made from dressed
stone, with stepped gables, the interior has recently
been renovated.
Club Alpin Français refuge. Manned from mid-June
to mid-September. Meals available when refuge is
manned. Reservation obligatory.

A “meublé de tourisme”, also called “Gîte rural” is a furnished flat or studio, for exclusive use of the person
renting it, available to tourists wanting to make a stay of varying amounts of time (days, weeks or months …)
but whose elected domicile is elsewhere. The accommodation presented below is organised by commune,
hamlet, alphabetical order and then type.
CLASSIFICATION
The new classification system for “meublés de tourisme” is voluntary, consisting of 5 categories from 1 to 5
stars, valid 5 years, at the end of which time the proprietor must re-apply for classification if he or she wishes
to continue in the scheme. The classification scheme has 112 criteria spread over 3 main headings: equipment,
client services, and accessibility and sustainable development.
“Clévacances” is a seasonal rental network: houses, flats, tourism residences, farms or chalets, contemporary,
traditional or unusual, the Clévacances label, recognised by the Ministry of Tourism in 1997, relies on a demanding, quality charter which evaluates three criteria: inside furnishing and facilities, the setting of the rental
property, welcome and helpfulness. This is to reassure the person renting that they will find the standards in
the flat or house which comply completely with the norms guaranteed by the national label Clévacances in
France.

HOW TO
GET HERE
BY ROAD
• FROM THE NORTH: (from Paris, Lyon, Valence,
Grenoble) : Autoroute A48 or A49 to Grenoble, then A480,
exit Pont de Claix, take le Col du Lautaret (D1091), cross
Briançon, direction Embrun / Gap on the N94. Le Pays des
Ecrins starts at Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières.
Attention! Until further notice, access via the Col du
Lautaret is closed. You must pass either via Gap (from Vizille
take the RN 85 via La Mure, the Col Bayard and Gap, then
the RN 94 direction Briançon), or via the Fréjus Tunnel (cf the
itinerary through Italy), or via the Col du Galibier which is only
open for a few months each year because of snow conditions
(take the Maurienne Autoroute A 43 via Chambèry, follow
Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, then Valloire, take the Galibier
tunnel, then the RD 1091 direction Briançon).
• THROUGH ITALY: Autoroute Maurienne A43 via
Fréjus tunnel, exit Oulx, pass the Col de Montgenèvre, cross
Briançon, direction Embrun/Gap on the N94. Le Pays des
Ecrins starts at Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières.
• FROM THE SOUTH: (from Montpellier, Marseille) :
Autoroute A51 via Aix-en-Provence and Sisteron, exit La
Saulce, direction Briançon (D942 puis RN94). Le Pays des
Ecrins starts at La Roche-de-Rame.
