THE TOWN OF LA roche-sur-yon
Before it was partially destroyed in 1793 during
the wars of the Vendée, La Roche-sur-Yon had
been the capital of a principality in the time of
the 'Ancien Régime' . By the decree of the 25th
May 1804, it replaced Fontenay-le-Comte as
administrative centre for the Vendée. Napoleon
imposed the construction of a new town which
was to be modelled on the concept of the “ideal
city” from ancient history. La Roche-sur-Yon
forms a pentagon and is organised like a Chinese
Checkers board, spreading out from a central
point, in this case, The Place Napoléon, which
boasts a statue of the emperor astride his horse.
 MECHANICAL BEASTS IN THE OPEN AIR
The origins of these uniquely fascinating mechanical beasts
are closely related to the origins of La Roche-sur-Yon and
its founding emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. In The Place
Napoléon you can admire the menagerie that was transported
back from the General’s campaign in Egypt at the end of the
18th century, and now given a new lease of life by La Machine
association from Nantes.
Young and old alike can use the various controls and levers to
manipulate a crocodile from the Nile, a camel, a hippopotamus
and even a sacred ibis.

L'EGLISE SAINT NICOLAS
The church’s Roman basilica-inspired design
is a shining example of early 19th century
neoclassical architecture. Particular features
are its vast arched ceiling with its trompel’oeil: painted panels decorated in roses, and
its 14th century statue in polychrome wood
dedicated to Notre Dame de La Roche.
Place Napoléon - La Roche-sur-Yon

For the rest of the year: open in the afternoon
(Contact 02 51 37 04 37).
LA MAISON RENAISSANCE
The town’s oldest building (1566), located in
the centre, is noted for its spiral staircase and
imposing chimneys. It houses a permanent

KEEPING FIT
la vallée de l'yon
The 30 mile River 'Yon' meanders peacefully from the north to the south of La Roche-surYon. In the north, the river forms a lake behind the dam at Moulin Papon. In the south, it
slowly descends to Piquet, one of the most picturesque parts of the valley.
The valley, with its 100 acres of land
set aside for a variety of activities, is
perfect for those who want to leave
the confines of the town behind them
and in a trice, embrace nature’s
charms.
Inhale the leafy air as you walk
or cycle for an hour or a day, far
removed from the hustle and bustle
of the nearby seaside resorts.

WALKING AND CYCLING
With over 36 trails (between 2 to 12 miles
long) to choose from, there are endless
possibilities to explore the local scenery and
enjoy the area’s mix of cultural and natural
landmarks.
Two of the Vendée’s main cycle routes pass
through the Yonnais district: one takes you
to the seaside while the other takes you past
the bocage (farmland typical of the west of
France).
HORSE RIDING
The horse has had a key role to play in the
history of the area.
Our Yonnais equestrian centres organise
pony trails and outings in horse-drawn
carriages so that visitors can appreciate
the beauty of the surrounding countryside

festival international
du film
If La Roche-sur-Yon is acknowledged
as being “the most movie-mad place
in France” it’s because there is an
unbreakable bond between the town
and the world of films. The week long
'Festival International du Film' offers
a carefully thought out programme
of films, workshops and debates for
all age groups; it even runs its own
film competition. And after certain
screenings, filmmakers and actors
join members of the audience to
