CARING COMMUNITY GRATEFUL PATIENTS 2015-16 QEH FOUNDATION THANK REPORT MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS VOLUNTEERS FAMILY 02 Thank My time as Chair of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation is coming to an end and it’s been a privilege to be part of such a wonderful organization focused on raising funds for the purchase of priority medical equipment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I personally felt a sense of responsibility to make a positive contribution and I was continually impressed how our donors, volunteers, and staff all help provide a better standard of health care for our friends and families in Prince Edward Island. We want to thank you, our donors, for making the QEH Foundation a priority in your charitable giving. Gifts of all sizes make a difference every day and we are so grateful for the support we receive from across Prince Edward Island. The impact of your generosity can be seen throughout our hospital and we take your support very seriously. Our staff are passionate about being efficient in fundraising; being effective in the stewardship of your donations; and also continually striving to maximize their impact. I’m proud that we are all part of an enthusiastic family who continue to shape and improve patient care with the purchase of priority medical equipment. I’ve also heard first-hand from many of our health care providers how the medical equipment played a role in their decision to work in PEI at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to Barb Dunphy for her many years of leadership as Chief Executive Officer where her enthusiasm and professionalism have been instrumental in the success of our Foundation. Barb is stepping back from her CEO duties and we are delighted that she is moving into a part-time role focused on donor relations and development. We were also pleased when Tracey Comeau originally joined our QEH Foundation team in 2013 and I want to offer my sincere congratulations to her as she transitions into the Chief Executive Officer role. Sincerely, Adam Balderston, Chair QEH Foundation Board of Directors 2 0 1 5 - 1 6 Thank Q E H F O U N D A T I O N T H A N K R E P O R T This past year at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation has been another exceptional one! Every year, for the past twenty-one, I have witnessed the incredible generosity of so many donors, at all different levels and ages. I feel privileged to have shared the leadership role with so many wonderful Chairs who have led this fine organization. I am proud of the planning and significance that the Board has placed in succession planning and know our new successor Tracey Comeau will lead this Foundation to the next level! Also, I look forward to moving into a part-time role with the Foundation focused on expanding development and our donor base, areas I am very passionate about. The QEH Foundation is very fortunate to have attracted competent staff who as a team, work along with our volunteers and donors to ensure we do our best to raise funds for medical equipment for our health professionals to provide excellence in health care. We know our hospital is an important institution in our province when we hear from Islanders and visitors who tell us the QEH has a special place in their hearts. Thank you for your ongoing support. I look forward to many future celebrations and success stories about the QEH. Thank Q! Now, the surgery is much less invasive and there are far fewer potential complications. The procedure also became day surgery rather than an overnight stay. With great success of the Yuletide Gala Auction, the QEH purchased two new machines, enhancing this service in PEI for all Islanders. “Sentinel lymph node mapping is now the standard of care,” says Dr. McCrea. “And we’re grateful that donations from Islanders give us the ability to perform these surgeries to better diagnose and treat the more than 110 Island women who are diagnosed each year.” QEH Surgeon Dr. Patrick McCrea is grateful to Islanders for their support to help purchase two new sentinel node machines for the QEH Operating Room. 07 Dr. Jeremy Beck, QEH Gastroenterologist and Paula Triantafillou, RN, display an endoscope used in one of the procedure rooms in the QEH Endoscopy Suite. New gastroenterologist enjoying his work at QEH Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gastroenterologist Dr. Jeremy Beck is pleased to be working in Prince Edward Island, and helping Islanders improve their health. He is impressed with what he sees in the QEH Endoscopy Suite. “To be in this new facility and to work with fellow surgeons, internists and dedicated There are approximately nursing staff is certainly a privilege,” says Charlottetown native Dr. Beck. “Combined 4,550 endoscopic procedures with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, the QEH has to be one of the best facilities in Atlantic Canada.” done each year resulting in diagnoses and therapeutic treatment of diseases Endoscopy nurse Paula Triantafillou was involved in the initial planning of the new of the lung and the upper and lower endoscopy suite as part of the Dr. Joseph A. and Eileen McMillan Ambulatory Care Centre that opened in 2012 and couldn’t agree more with Dr. Beck’s sentiments. gastro intestinal tract including surveillance for cancer, “From a staff and patient point of view, we couldn’t be happier being here,” says ulcers, polyps and irritable Paula. “Many of our patients require life-long treatment and those who were patients bowel syndrome. in the old endoscopy area say the difference is like night and day, especially in providing for privacy and comfort.” 08 2 0 1 5 - 1 6 Q E H F O U N D A T I O N T H A N K R E P O R T New Ophthalmologist fulfils dream to return to the Island and work at QEH New Queen Elizabeth Hospital Eye Surgeon Dr. Andrew Boswall grew up in Frenchfort, PEI and dared to imagine returning home to work in PEI after completing his ophthalmology studies last year. He says he is living his dream working in the newly named Gray Family Eye Surgery Suite. Dr. Boswall appreciates that the new eye equipment is with thanks to the Island community. “I am fortunate to work with the same specialized eye equipment that I was trained on and some equipment is even more advanced here at the QEH.” “My classmates are envious that I get to work in this brand new surgery suite,” says Dr. Boswall. “Islanders should know that with the quality team of eye specialists and nursing staff in PEI, combined with state-of-the-art equipment, they are certainly receiving some of the best eye care available in Canada.” This provincial service only available at the QEH includes the following eye surgical procedures: • Retinal/Vitrectomy procedures • Oculo-plastics procedures With an aging • Strabismus procedures • Repair of eye trauma demographic, • Drainage procedures ophthalmology is very • Corneal procedures important to Island residents • Cataracts and is one of the top surgical procedures performed at the QEH, averaging about 1,600 eye surgeries annually with the majority of those being cataract procedures. Dr. Andrew Boswall, QEH Ophthalmologist, and Cindy Barry, RN, showcase one of the new eye surgery rooms in the Gray Family Eye Surgery Suite. 09 Dr. Daniel Costa and Ashley MacLeod, RN, demonstrate a laparoscopic nephectomy procedure now performed at the QEH. Less invasive procedure for kidney removal at QEH Operations for removal of kidneys – nephrectomies – are now being performed laparoscopically at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Dr. Daniel Costa, QEH Urologist, joined the urology team in 2015. As an Islander he is delighted to have returned home and is impressed with the high-quality medical equipment that donors have made possible. Before now, patients opting for a laparoscopic nephrectomy were required to travel to Moncton or Halifax. Now, patients are able to receive their treatment on the Island, with a drastically reduced recovery period and hospital stay. “We are very grateful to everyone who has provided the necessary funds to purchase such exceptional medical equipment, often exceeding our expectations,” says Dr. Costa. “The impact on patient care and recovery is remarkable.” Jenny and Neville After experiencing separate emergency health issues, Neville Lawless and his granddaughter, Jenny Dunne, both praise QEH health care providers and their expertise for getting their lives back on track. “It’s just a miracle; the equipment and technology, the explanation of the situation, and the care, even a cup of tea,” says Neville’s wife, Bertha. “They thought of everything.” With the support of the expert medical staff at the QEH, Neville, a retired teacher, continues to enjoy working on his farm while Jenny graduated from high school this year and will be moving on to a busy and active life at university in the fall. “Everyone treated me like an adult, not like a child and only explaining to my parents what was happening,” recalls Jenny. “However, at 16, the staff instinctively knew this was one of the scariest experiences I’ve been through and when my procedure was done, the technician put a teddy bear on my bed. It was so comforting.” For more of Jenny and Neville’s story, visit www.qehfoundation.pe.ca 2 0 1 5 - 1 6 Q E H F O U N D A T I O N T H A N K R E P O R T Colby Younker For many people, a hospital environment can feel foreign and strange, but for Colby Younker, the QEH is almost a second home. Back in 2003, Colby started having renal failure and was diagnosed “I’m grateful that I can receive the care I need here at home, with renal disease requirin PEI. Family and friends are close and everything is here. ing dialysis. Until recently, I’m able to keep a job and can work full-time.” Colby visited the QEH three times a week for treatment. Though spending so much time in treatment can be difficult, Colby found the staff at the QEH made things a lot easier. “They are great- they are my extended family.” Thankfully, Colby received his third kidney transplant and has resumed regular activity, no longer requiring dialysis. He will continue to need follow-up care and routine bloodwork at the QEH. For more of Colby’s story, visit www.qehfoundation.pe.ca 11 Jock Beck Being a long-time volunteer firefighter, Jock Beck was always aware of the quality care patients received at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Little did he know that he would be experiencing that care up close and personal on several occasions. Jock received excellent care from the medical professionals at the QEH after suffering a heart attack, investigating “Every time that I’ve been in contact with the possible colon cancer, and from what he calls QEH, I’ve been met with nothing but courte“angina at rest”. sy and competence, and I’ve been extremely grateful for a facility that delivers that competence in such a kind way.” “It is wonderful to know that no matter what misfortune strikes, that you will get not only the medical treatment that you need, and the follow-up that you need, but also that your family is close to you and can offer that support that every patient needs, no matter what condition you’re dealing with at the time.” For more of Jock’s story, visit www.qehfoundation.pe.ca 2 0 1 5 - 1 6 Q E H F O U N D A T I O N T H A N K R E P O R T QEH Legac y Society The QEH Legacy Society recognizes individuals and families who include the Foundation in their estate planning through a bequest, life insurance, or other planned gifts in support of the Foundation’s mission - raising funds for medical equipment. Honourable Frank Lewis, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, proudly presents a QEH Legacy Society pin to most recent society member Linda Trenholm. “It was definitely a pleasure to be recognized as a new member of the QEH Legacy Society. I really enjoyed attending the Legacy Tea and hearing QEH specialist Dr. Patrick McCrea speak about the procedures his team is performing as a result of the support of Islanders. I recently retired so I am eager to sign up to become a regular hospital volunteer.” Linda Trenholm 13 14 2 0 1 5 - 1 6 Q E H F O U N D A T I O N T H A N K R E P O R T Former nurse names QEH one of her children Trish Clarkin admired her mother’s generosity throughout her lifetime and was proud when she named the QEH Foundation a beneficiary in her Will. Her mother was a Charlottetown native, a graduate of the PEI School of Nursing in 1946, and a mother of four children. “Mom gave to several charities throughout her lifetime and taught us about the importance of giving back to others,” says Trish. “As a nurse, she understood the impact of giving on patient care and the genuine need for up-to-date medical equipment.” QEH - The Charity Child Sadly, her mother Lois passed away in 2014 and was so inspired by her many years of caring for others, that she included the QEH Foundation as one of her children and divided her estate into five parts instead of four.
