City’s $220m vision
• An artist’s impression of a new Fremantle centre, where Kings
Square is now, with High Street visually reinstated past the town
hall clock and a slip road connecting Queen and William Streets
in front of what is now Myer.
by BRENDAN FOSTER
and STEVE GRANT
FREMANTLE city council
will sell key property assets to
Sirona Capital—the owner of
the Myer site—to help realise a
$220 million vision for the city
centre.
The Queensgate car park,
Queensgate centre and the old
Spicer site on the other side of
William Street will raise the
bulk of the council’s $44.74m
contribution to the project.
Mayor Brad Pettitt says the
project, centred on what is now
Kings Square, will leave a “lasting
legacy” for the city.
The plan aims to transform
the city’s “geographic heart” with
cafes and restaurants, commercial
and retail space, apartments, a
new library, council o ces and a
swanky boutique hotel.
Federation Square
“It will do to Fremantle what
Federation Square and a whole
lot of great centres have done to
attract people back to the city,” Dr
Pettitt told the Herald.
“As a single development this
will be the biggest development
ever undertaken by Freo.
“This is a crucial milestone for
the Kings Square project and is an
exciting time for Fremantle.”
Dr Pettitt says no open space
will be lost, although “open” will
have a height limit.
“Overall the open space
is about the same—it doesn’t
change—the new space will be a
covered space but it will be almost
the same amount.
“So ultimately we will have the
same space as you did before, but
we will be making sure you have
got activation strategies.
“With up to 30,000sqm o ce
space you probably got say 1500
o ce workers.
“Our response to anti-social
behaviour is it doesn’t like
company, so the more people you
have around, the less anti-social
behaviour we will have.”
Dr Pettitt says Kings Square
“hasn’t worked for a long time”
and is plagued by anti-social
behaviour.
“This will create a real hub,” he
says. “Before, it was a fragmented
space that was never comfortable
to shop.”
The business plan shows the
council owns six sites within the
project area, ranging from the car
park valued at $16.5m to a 268sqm
lot on Newman Court worth
$800,000. The old Spicer site across
the road was valued last year at
$6.65m.
The council will find itself
$15.2m short after selling assets
(assuming it goes ahead with the
carpark sale) but says it can offset
all but $6.38m because of the
debt-raising capacity provided by
leases on the cafe, o ce and retail
spaces.
The plan says there will be no
impact on other capital works
projects, and, overall, it rates the

project as a low to medium risk,
both financially and politically.
It also reveals Sirona is
conducting engineering studies
to see if it can squeeze another
floor onto the Queensgate car
park, which must stay if the plan
proceeds.
Sirona has also agreed to look
at building a hotel at the Spicer
site, or alternatively low-cost
housing for workers or Notre
Dame students.
Sirona will be paid a project
management fee for constructing
the city’s “core facilities and the
public realm”.
The council engaged RSM Bird
Cameron to conduct due diligence
on the developer, which gained a
tick of approval for experience and
financial capacity.
The plan went out for eight
weeks’ public consultation on
November 15 and Dr Pettitt
told the Herald construction was
expected to start next year.
You had bags of fun
IT was a real howler, wasn’t it?
And on the front page too. Ouch.
As most Herald readers
will have surmised—given the
paroxysms of laughter we’ve
endured all week—Freo’s 29,000
citizens are not using 338,000
plastic bags each every year.
More like 338, which is still a
lot—6.5 per week each—but not
quite as disastrous.
Many thanks to Kimble Jury,
Winthrop; Sean O’Loughlin,
Beaconsfield, Terry Foote via
email; L Jay, Palmyra; Greg
Luke, Fremantle; Guy Mathews,
Leeming and K O’Brian, Fremantle
for your letters that pointed out
the mistake in various tones of
delight and derision.
It wasn’t reporter Brendan
Foster’s error: The miscalculation
was sub-edited into his story by
me. And while I’m heartily eating
humble pie I’ll ‘fess up to subediting in “the UK and Britain”
in the same story, when I’d meant
to write “the UK and Europe”.
Sigh. Many apologies—338,000
in fact.

Kids at risk from school asbestos
by BRENDAN FOSTER
BROKEN asbestos at the old South Coogee
primary school is an ongoing risk to local
children, who are clambering through holes
in a fence to play on the site.
• Cr Bart Houwen and MP Fran Logan
are demanding the WA education
department make the old South Coogee
primary site safe.

Local Labor MP Fran Logan and Cockburn
city councillor Bart Houwen are demanding the
Barnett minority Liberal government immediately
demolish the school, which closed nine years ago,
and safely remove absestos.
Cockburn city council approved demolition
of the school, at the corner of Stock and Russell
Roads, in June but the WA education department
has done nothing to progress work.
“The South Coogee oval is still used by the local
footy club and this is immediately adjacent to the
asbestos site,” Mr Logan thundered.
“The Liberal government is callously and
deliberately exposing young children from around
Cockburn to airborne asbestos fibres.
“Amazingly, the minister for environment, Bill
Marmion drove right past the old school site twice
last week on his way the Henderson tip sit to do a
press conference on the issue of asbestos.
“Why didn’t he stop for just a minute to look at
this disgrace?”
Mr Logan wrote to former education minister
Liz Constable about the issue in March last year
and he’s furious the government has dragged its
feet for 18 months with no end in sight.
He’s followed up with another blistering letter
to Dr Constable’s successor, Peter Collier.
“Why, over 18 months after I raised this issue
with the minister of education and a commitment
was made for its demolition has nothing been
done to remove this massive asbestos site from our
community?” he asks.
Cr Houwen says he’s asked “our health guy to
put a rocket up the education department”.
“You can see where people having being getting
through a hole in the fence because there is a wellworn track which obviously has been getting a fair
bit of traffic,” he says.
“A hole in a fence is an invitation for kids to
play and that broken asbestos should have been
cleaned up by now.”

As our use of mobile technologies increases,
more often than not, we’re using wi-fi to connect to
the fixed-line network at our home or work. And it’s
the fixed-line network that’s carrying the majority
of the data load.
The NBN will support better wi-fi in all Australian homes
and businesses. With technologies such as optic fibre
directly to the home, you and your wi-fi connected
devices can access fast, reliable broadband.
The National Broadband Network rollout is underway,
find out more at australia.gov.au/nbn or call 1800 023 076.
Facts and benefits:
• The NBN is designed to support Australia’s future
broadband needs.
• As the optic fibre network is rolled out, it replaces
the copper phone network.
• The NBN will support wi-fi in homes and businesses.
• The NBN optic fibre network will be capable of
providing broadband speeds up to 40 times faster
than ADSL broadband.
• The NBN will help Australians compete in the
global economy.

Mental health in
crisis: It’s official
and, at times, places other patients
at risk;
• communication must
improve between mental health
services and GPs; and,
• a need for more trained
Aboriginal psychologists,
psychiatrists and mental health
nurses, particularly in remote
areas.
He urges the chief psychiatrist’s
o ce be kept independent from
both the health department and
the commission, “where it can
be seen that conflicts of interest
would arise in either situation”.
Ms Morton’s draft mental
health bill proposes moving
the chief psychiatrist into the
commission.
This is still to be determined as
it requires further consideration
and discussion,” Ms Morton’s
spokesperson says. “However, it
will be finalised before the final
Bill is introduced into parliament
next year.”
Labor mental health shadow
Ljiljanna Ravlich says Ms Morton
is promising more money while
staff resources are slashed.
“I don’t think she has costed
anything,” she told the Herald. “It
will cost a few hundred million
dollars to fix and a doubling of the
1000-plus hospital beds in WA.”
WA Greens mental health
spokesperson Alison Xamon
says the report paints a damning
picture.
“Clearly four years after this
government took o ce we still
have a mental health system in
crisis.
“That people have died while
trying unsuccessfully to access
services, and despite their pleas
for help, is not only deeply tragic,
but a sign that we are looking at a
system that is broken.
“This is not just a failure of the
Barnett-Grylls government, but
a long-term failure of successive
governments to invest in these
critical health services.”
Unhesitating
“For some, an unhesitating
opinion was the system,” he says.
“Not providing adequate,
timely and preventive care was
a major contributing factor to a
patient’s suicide.”
The review of admission and
discharge and transfer practices
says WA’s mental health system
is under “considerable stress” and
lacks “overall leadership”.
Fremantle Independent MP
Adele Carles says the review,
which follows an examination by
WA’s chief psychiatrist earlier this
year into four suicides of Alma
Street patients, is an indictment of
the Barnett government’s mental
health management.
“The system is clearly broken
and this review confirms the
earlier findings that there are
endemic problems across the
board.”
After sitting on the report for
two months Ms Morton is now
publicly embracing it as giving her

The Liberals came into
government in 2008 highly critical
of Labor’s mental health record,
and promising to fix things. Three
years later, there is little evidence
of improvement.
Neurosurgeon Bryant Stokes’
scathing 220-page review has sat
on WA mental health minister
Helen Morton’s desk since
September.
Reading it, one can understand
her reluctance in letting it out of
her sight.
Prof Stokes says frontline
mental health sta ng is half what
it should be, noting there’s been a
24 per cent surge in admissions in
the past six years.
He wants a review into the
“large number of managers in all
mental health settings”, saying
there is little evidence they are of
any benefit.
He recommends an urgent
overhaul of a system in which
unregistered overseas trained
psychiatrists have been allowed
to work illegally in WA while
families have been forced to sue
the state over the negligent care
of suicidal loved ones.

the leverage she needs to squeeze
more mental health dollars out of

She says some of the
recommendations are already
being implemented.
“We recognise the problems,
we understand the complexities
and we have every intention

services,” she says.
Clinicians stretched to provide
even basic mental health care
repeatedly expressed to Prof

resources, management and
governance.
Prof Stokes interviewed 891
people and examined the cases
of 255 people with mental illness
who killed themselves in 2009.
He notes hospitals and clinics
lack, “a single point of authority
with a described responsibility
for accountability for patient care
and for consistency of process and
practices”.
“Many mental health facilities
act as if they work in a silo,” he
says, recommending the WA
health department and mental
health commission develop a
10-year clinical services plan to
replace the failing system.
“Their relationships with each
other are fragmented so that
patients moving from one facility
to another are frequently subjected
to repeated history-taking and
changing care.”
Demand outstrips supply at
facilities such as rehabilitation
services, with more people,
“admitted into WA specialist
mental health inpatient units each
year”.
Prof Stokes says carer
involvement is essential and
that the, “sanctity of patient
confidentiality should not be used
as a reason for not informing the
carer”. He also found:
• the open layout of emergency
departments is not conducive to
managing mentally ill patients
THE Barnett minority Liberal
government is in damage
control after a major review
into mental health in WA
identified a system in crisis.

IN Herald Earthcare (November
3, 2012) Jon Strachan asserts:
“{Sandy} is one of the strongest
hurricanes to ever hit the US”.
According to the US government’s
national hurricane centre Sandy
was a Category 2 with wind speeds
of 154-177 km/h. Compare this to
Katrina, a Category 5 with wind
speeds of 252km or higher. Sandy
was much bigger, but not nearly
as strong, as Katrina. More than 60
hurricanes of category 2 or more
have made landfall in the US since
1950.
Also, “the US Hurricane season is
all but over” actually means “the US
Hurricane season is not over” (but it
would suit me better if it were).
As for “large hurricanes are
not expected to travel far north as
NYC”, I’m afraid the historical data
again suggests that they should be.
Ten hurricanes have made landfall
between NYC and Boston MA since
1950, suggesting that approximately
16 per cent of hurricanes that make
landfall will do so north of NYC.
Four of these were Category 3,
stronger than Sandy, further north
than NYC. Strike three, of three.
I am not a climate change denier.
I believe the factual scientific data
that supports the theory of climate
change. Basing a well meaning article
on emotive statements that have little
basis in fact weakens the argument
and provides ammunition for climate
change deniers

Julia Gillard is doing the best she
can, from bringing back the dental
scheme that John Howard got rid of
and bringing in a disability scheme,
who knows when we will need it
ourselves?
It’s time the Liberal Party brought
in Malcolm Turnbull as leader. He
has a bit of class, he can string a
sentence together! I can’t believe
Tony Abbott is a Rhodes Scholar, he
can’t even count!
He couldn’t get the figures of his
budget right before the last election,
$11 billion over! I hope that Margie
handles the finances in their house.
I will never vote for Tony Abbott,
Malcolm might be in with a chance.
John Howard told us he would
never bring in a GST and he did.
Nobody called him a liar. Different
rules for men. John Howard had a
huge amount of money saved on the
balance sheet. It’s very easy to save
money when you don’t spend it! Very
little was spent on infrastructure,
then we got Workchoices, all we
heard was “user pays”.
As Gough famously said: “It’s
time for a change.”
Pat Nicholson

So rude
I DID admire Julia Gillard in
opposition, but an old saying
goes “people in glass houses
shouldn’t throw stones” and
while throwing around sexist/
misogynist she should examine
the new attitude towards Anna
Burke, since she was elected
Speaker.
The PM has dropped the Madam,
ignored the Chair and mostly
excised the courtesy “thank you”. It
seems most Labor MPs have taken
a vow (or order) not to use “Madam
Speaker”, one even correcting herself
after uttering the dreaded word, and
the PM’s tone implies she would call
her nothing if given a choice.
I am not a feminist, am apolitical
after 46 years of voting and won’t
vote for a national socialist PM and
her left cronies who lecture me ad
nauseam with Dorothy Dix questions
as if I can’t think for myself.
P Ryder

Editor’s note: “Madam” was dropped
at Anna Burke’s request. This letter has
been significantly edited for length and
clarity.
Just one more
YOU report there are already
six liquor stores in Bicton but
apparently a new Dan Murphy’s
store will lead to an outbreak of
hooliganism, gridlock, riots and
the general collapse of civilisation
(Herald, November 10, 2012).
There may be issues with respect
to parking and tra c but the
site is on Canning Highway in a
commercial area, which would seem
appropriate for this type of business.
Are the requirements significantly
more demanding than for the
supermarket which it replaces?
I suspect the tra c card is being
played to hide a less defensible
hostility.

As for the claim a new
bottleshop will lead to “increased
yob behaviour and alcoholrelated crime” how do we get
there? This is a bottleshop, not
a pub.
People buy booze and take it
home, they don’t scull it in the
carpark and then chuck rocks
through people’s windows. Even
if they did, how could seven
shops possibly produce more
crime than six?
It seems to me this is really
about the success of the Dan
Murphy’s chain. While I would
like to see more small, locallyowned businesses I do not
believe it is the role of local
government to discriminate
against businesses that are large
or successful.
I have no stake in this debate.
I do not live in Melville and I
am not likely to travel 9km just
for a bottleshop. My concern is
with the spin from the powerful
but unelected Herald newspaper,
which often seems to put a
good story ahead of a balanced,

and asking “can I have a poppy
please?” They would then drop
their precious donation into the
tin.
All the youngsters showed
a respect and courtesy which
was a credit to them and their
parents.
Again this year, it was my
very great pleasure to represent
the RSL at the Coolbellup

Thank you all.

snub
inexplicable
WHILE not wishing to
cast aspersions on the
qualifications of the other
community representatives
nominated by the council’s
planning committee to sit
on the West End Working
Group, it is outrageous that
John Dowson’s nomination
was declined.
No-one has advocated the
heritage significance of the West
End, is more familiar with its
architecture and depicted it in
his various publications, than
John Dowson.
Moreover his was the first
nomination to fill one of the
two vacant positions. That the
decision to fill the two vacancies
was delayed for several months
while other nominations were
sought invites the suspicion
his nomination was not given
due weight by the committee,
despite his evident qualifications
and prior membership of the
working party.

Don’t
believe the
spin
IN “Council legless on liquor”
(Herald, November 10, 2012)
you repeat the same line
Melville city council has
been spinning for at least five
years now.
That is, the elected
councillors must vote against
their own beliefs, views and
wishes in order to prevent
decisions being overturned by
the state administrative tribunal
and incurring hefty legal fees.
The process seems to reek of
dishonesty, but now is now out
in the open.
Councils that have prepared
their insurance policies correctly
will have ample indemnity
insurance to cover such
situations.
The insurance premium on
any possible legal costs against
the council would be minimal
compared to possible legal costs
by the other party’s lawyers.
Incidentally, the system
seems to have been set up so
that council(s) cannot make a
claim for legal costs against the
other party when councils win
cases.
This also brings into light
the fact Melville city council
won both Dan Murphy’s cases
at liquor licensing and also the
supreme court, and I believe
the council still can’t claim legal
costs against Woolworths. Seems
to be one-sided.
Councillors should continue
to act with honesty and integrity
and make decisions according to
their conscience.

disastrous outcomes like Piper Alpha in
the North Sea.
That there are risks involved in
fracture stimulation of underground
reservoirs containing gas is well known.
This is backed by decades of successful
applications.
The key point I wish to make is that
these risks vary greatly from case to
case and to take the extreme examples
and then apply them across the board
to justify demands for a blanket halt to
the shale gas industry is like closing all
our beaches because of the risk of shark
attack.
As well there is an additional risk to
our community in that we may all have
to pay more for more expensive forms of
energy.
I have read and viewed the several
reports and documentaries quoted
and believe that if the industry and
community target the higher risk
situations and the few “rogue” operators
that we can reach a mutually acceptable
balance to this debate.

Barking up the
wrong tree
AS a dingo lover and owner, I found
the article, “Dingo scares pets to death”
(Herald, November 10, 2012) to be
nothing but sensationalism.
With the large bold print at the top, the
headline gives the impression dingoes are
a feared, wild animal that do nothing but
harm.
To refer to them in this manner for a
headline, and then print a description
that could have been a dog, and finally
print it could not be confirmed it was
even a dingo is, in my opinion, just totally
wrong.
Dingoes are an Australian icon that
are on the vulnerable list and very close
letters
to being on the endangered list. It has
been proven they keep the ecology in
balance, which means that where there
are dingoes, there are very few, if any,
feral cats and foxes which are introduced
species. Dingoes are not aggressive and
have a flight rather than fight nature.
They are a very misunderstood and badly
maligned species.
Has your reporter, the people in the
article or yourself ever had contact with a
real dingo? What about other attacks by
animals where a pet is mauled to death,
(not frightened to death) or a person is
attacked while walking their dog? I can’t
recall seeing bold headlines regarding any
of that.
All I ask is that the reporting in your
paper be researched prior to going to
print to make sure the facts are correct
rather than have unsubstantiated
headlines and content.
Ross Sinclair

Editor’s note: Guinea pigs are introduced
too. We’re guessing there wouldn’t be many
of the little critters scurrying about in dingo
territory either.
Rose-tinted

THERE is none so blind as those
who will not see, such as Pamela
G Gleeson (Herald letters, October
27, 2012) and the Labor faithful
who continue to harangue us with
their illogical bleating in defence of
our stumbling—both literally and
figuratively‚ and bumbling prime
minister.
Julia Gillard’s anti-misogyny and
anti-sexism speech was not spectacularly
grand, nor magnificent, but a desperate
attempt to create a su ciently large
distraction that would deflect welldeserved criticism—that has not been
gender based—of her performance as
leader of an incompetent government.
Pamela should also be aware that:
• Tony Abbott used the phrase “die of
shame” many times prior to Alan Jones’
now infamous diatribe.
• The comment “a piece of work” does
not carry any gender bias.
• Australia has one of the healthiest
economies in the world not because of
Gillard’s bunch of bozos but despite
them.

O2, Brute?
HOW is our planet’s oxygen supply
going, I often wonder? Analysing
trapped air bubbles in fossilised
amber reveals there was 30 per
cent oxygen in the air—about twice
as much as today. Living in a big
smoggy city the oxygen level could
be as low as 12 per cent.
Statistically, it takes around five
minutes for carbon monoxide to fill
a garage with lethal exhaust fumes.
Multiply the minutes to years and that
car by several billion, add in all the jet
engines and industrial belching and how
many years before most of the ground
layer of our atmosphere tastes like a
garage?
On the human health side, oxygen
deficiency is a major cause of disease:
It can happen also because of all the
extra baggage were carrying around
in our veins—the pesticides, the heavy
metals, the chlorine and the fluoride, the
end products of the TFAs, the xanthine
oxidase from homogenised milk and a
thousand other things.
When the bloodstream contains so
much rubbish there is less room for the
oxygen molecules we need to stay well.
Disease organisms cannot survive in high
oxygen environments but they flourish at
low levels. Question what is progress—
what defines an intelligent civilisation?
When does growth end?

Noddy shakes a
leg and goes loco
by STEVE GRANT
IT’S not every day someone
asks for your help to get
their leg chopped off.
But six-and-a-half years after
being hit by a car on Amherst
Street in White Gum Valley,
Noddy Baldwin says the pain
from a shattered shinbone that
never healed is so unbearable
he wants doctors to amputate.
Problem is, says Mr Baldwin,
nobody at Fremantle Hospital
takes his plea seriously so he’s
contemplating a cocktail of
drugs and laying his leg across
a railway line to let a train do
the job.
Pain killer
Chugging through almost
two packets of the pain killer
Mersyndol each day, he says
something’s got to give.
“I’ve cut back on ‘em,
because that’s what they told
me—they reckon maybe the
next packet might put me in a
body bag,” he told the Herald.
He admits to missing
pain management sessions
at the hospital because of
forgetfulness and skipping
rehabilitation because he
prefers his own routine of
swimming and gentle walks,
but says when he did attend he
didn’t get any relief anyway.
“I’ve been begging them to
amputate it—that’s how painful
it is—since I had to go back for
a second operation which was
12 months after the accident.

Baldwin says. He claims one
doctor told him the operation
would be pointless because he’d
experience ‘phantom pains’
after losing the leg.
He’s no stranger to the
sensations amputees can feel
from a lost limb; he lost two
fingers in an accident and they
still feel as thought they’re
permanently crossed.
Despite the warning, the
disability pensioner reckons it’s
a risk he’s willing to take, saying
the pain is ruining his life.
“I feel like I’m stuck in the
one place,” he says, adding that
after so many years he’s sick
of being asked about what he’s
done to his leg.
Mr Baldwin’s been on a
pension since 1994 and recently
moved into a Homeswest unit
in Hamilton Hill, and he says
he can’t shake the feeling that if
he’d been a rung or two up the
social ladder his pleas might
have been taken more seriously.

While driving back from a spot of retail therapy at City
Farmers with my two kids and the family pooch in the car we
were diverted to Paget St, Hilton due to the abovementioned
accident. The kids wanted food, the dog wanted a tree and
I wanted, no, I needed a good cup of coffee pronto. Lo and
behold on the corner of Paget St and Rennie Cres I spotted
tables, chairs, umbrellas and people eating and drinking - a
CAFÉ!
There were even trees for our canine family member to both
sniff and lay claim to in the usual canine fashion. Without
hesitation I made the executive decision to pull over, park
the car (yes! bonus, easy parking, no meter!) and treat the
kids to an early lunch and myself to that all important shot of
caffeine.
Surprise, surprise; who would have thought that this little
café tucked away in Hilton would serve food that good?
Without a doubt my Eggs Benedict ($16) was top of the list,
the best I’ve eaten in the Freo area. Presentation excellent,
it looked like a work of art and tasted divine. My hollow
legged 13 year old son ordered a beef and lamb burger
($14) and after wolfing it down suggested I ask the chef for
the recipe, claiming he could eat one of these burgers every
day of the week.
In h
his words it was ‘awesome’. My 11year old

(who has a bit of a sweet tooth) chose

owner of the café (who had been busy

all said dogs with a cuddle, a chat and a dog bickie. We
all enjoyed ourselves so much I weakened and ordered a
second cup of excellent coffee.
The atmosphere was friendly and casual and a
lot of people seemed to know each other. I felt a
bit like an extra in the old TV series Cheers with
staff greeting several customers by name.
While the kids took our pooch for a walk I enjoyed talking
to the owner and some of the locals (the place is actually
called the Local Café) and discovered that this place has
a bit of a chequered history. Up until about 18 years ago
it was the local butcher shop and since then has changed
hands and profile a few times.
The current owners, Rob and Ary, the talented and creative
chef, share a passion for fresh and exciting food. According
to the local clientele, since taking over about a year ago they
have slowly but surely reinvigorated the area with a facelift,
state of the art coffee machine and are continuously working
on improvements.
When a fancy cake shop opened up for business next door,
many Hilton regulars raised their eyebrows. Would the two
businesses be compatible? Would one take trade from the
other? Would the owners come to blows over café lattes and
chocolate éclairs?
To the surprise of some the two shops are wonderfully
compatible. A synergy has been created resulting in
increased trade for both shops in what is fast becoming a
not-so-secret corner in the greater Fremantle area.
‘Our original idea was to do it up, get it humming and sell
it,’ said Rob, who looks after front of house and coffees while
chef Ary prepares the wonderful breakfast and lunch fare.
‘But, like the name of our cafe, we fell in love with the
locals and we’re still here.’
Sweet Desires’s pastry chef Blake Morphett opened his
doors in March and his patisserie is going from strength to
strength.
‘I live just over the road and was looking at the premises for
years, even when it was a Salvation Army shop, says Blake.
‘Since our main focus was to be on wholesaling, the success
of the retail side has surprised us. Word of mouth has seen a
lot of locals come in. You can order in the morning and your
cake will be ready by the afternoon.’
Rob believes it’s quite unique to have the two businesses
working together in a little place like Hilton.
‘Some people would look at it as taking business away from
them but as a café owner, it’s a no-brainer. We look at it as
value adding … it’s like having your own baker on site that
can provide our customers with a delectable range of sweets
to accompany their coffee.’
As we mentioned, it was our lucky day when we discovered
this great little place by pure happenstance, and though we
don’t live in Hilton we hope to become one of the locals
pretty soon as this will surely become our regular watering
hole, pooch and all.

Murdoch vision unveiled
by DAVID BELL
THE WA government has released its
vision for the future of the Murdoch
activity centre, with big increases
in students, workers and residents
planned.
WA planning minister John Day says
with the new Fiona Stanley hospital and the
Challenger Institute of Technology moving
from Beaconsfield, long-term it’s expected
that 35,000 employees, 22,000 residents and
43,000 students could occupy the area.
High-rise is coming to the area with
10-storey buildings planned for “Murdoch
Square”—a low-cost accommodation,
shopping, leisure and community
intensification project planned for the area
around the train station.
Despite the densification WA planning
commission chair Gary Prattley says iconic
bushland will be protected: “Maintaining
Murdoch’s bush setting was a priority,” he
said in his foreword to the 150-page plan.
The plan is out for public comment until
February 8. Visit www.planning.wa.gov.au for

Grljusich dead
Cancer claims former mayor
by BRENDAN FOSTER
FORMER Cockburn mayor John
Grljusich, 61, has died after losing his
battle with cancer.
Mayor from 1997 to 1999 and before
that a long-serving councillor from 1983,
his public service record was indelibly
tarnished when his council was sacked
and 16 adverse findings were made against
him. He sought re-election following the
council’s reconstitution but failed to regain
voters’ trust.
Former mayor Ray Lees was saddened to
hear of his successor’s death.
He didn’t want the sacking and adverse
findings to be Mr Grljusich’s epitaph.
“It’s very sad, especially with the
sickness over the last few years,” Mr Lees
told the Herald.
“I always remember him working with
flowers, but council-wise he was a good
councillor.”
Incumbent Logan Howlett extended
his “heartfelt sympathy” to Mr Grljusich’s
widow Marie and the couple’s three
daughters.
“John’s steely determination was
reflected in everything he did as a footballer,
businessman, community leader and
councillor and mayor,” Mr Howlett said.
“The Grljusich name is synonymous with
Cockburn and John’s family can be very
proud of his achievements and contribution
to Cockburn over many years.
“He will be sadly missed by all that
knew him.”
Mr Grljusich was passionate about
Aussie Rules and overcame knee injuries to
play 43 games with East Fremantle.
The younger brother of Tom, George and
Don—who all played for cross-town rivals
South Fremantle—he’d often spoken fondly
about his 1974 premiership with Old Easts.
Nicknamed Crazy during his playing
days he told the football website FootyGoss
last year about his time at the club.
“I enjoyed myself at East Fremantle,”
he said. “Toddy gave me the opportunity. I
achieved beyond my wildest dreams.”
The club posted a tribute to Mr Grljusich
on its website.
The funeral was held in St Jerome’s
Catholic Church, Munster.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE AT THE
BARRACKS. This year Remembrance Day
(11th November) falls on a Sunday, and as we have
lost numerous diggers this year, we have decided
to invite the general public who live in and around
the surrounding suburbs of the Barracks. Our
Remembrance Day service is attended by Legacy War
Widows; a Choir and Band, and is a very touching
service. As the general public are invited, in the
spirit of the Community we would also be hosting a

mingle. RSVP Olwen on 9311 2525 or 0412 081 182

M
Y fiancé knows I’m
not a great dining
companion. As soon
as my meal is placed before
me two of my five senses
vanish and I’m left with just
taste, sight and smell.
I become so involved in
my food Kylie will start a
conversation with the table
next to ours or turn to her
smartphone for some sort of
digital interaction.
So you can understand
my reservations for tapas.
The purpose of the Spanish
tradition is to create a social
dining experience where you
share fare with friends between
conversation: Usually about
how much they earn, how smart
their children are or how they’re
experiencing chest pain. Boring.
I jumped at the chance to
review Cockburn Central’s new
Indian-inspired tapas and wine
bar, Cafe Royal, because its next
door counterpart, The Majestic
Indian, serves some of Perth’s
finest Indian delights.
The congenial waiter
suggested we order a tapas plate
each to share because of the large
portion sizes. But to make it a
levelled review we ordered four.
The vegetarian crispy stuffed
mushrooms ($15.50) are lightly
battered spheres as big as cricket
balls and stuffed with curried
cottage cheese and a few fennel
seeds which gave it a fresh anise
flavour. The mushrooms were
aromatic, juicy and heavenly. It’s
a dish I’ll return for.
While I was downing my
‘shrooms Kylie was enjoying the
Fish Amritsari ($17.50): boneless
basa slices flavoured with
home-pounded spices including
ajwain. The fish was so fine it
was overpowered by the batter’s
strong spices but the dish was
delicious none-the-less.
A highlight was the date and
tamarind dipping sauce that
accompanied the vegetarian
samosas ($15.50). Delightfully
fruity it added a sweetness to the
samosa’s filling of potato, green
peas and crunchy cashews. The
whole thing was encased in a
delicate, flaky pastry.
Our final tapas, the tandoori
chicken ($16.50), had Kylie
and I sucking every last morsel
from the bones. The moist
Maghlai marinated flesh was
so mouthwatering I licked the
bright red tandoori residue
from my fingers in a most
unmannerly way. It left a
moorish mild spice on my palate
and tongue that I wish Colgate
would develop as a toothpaste.
Café Royal’s vogue interior
creates an instant impression of
sophistication and style we are
more used to seeing in Subiaco
or Claremont. But with the
amount of sold signs plastering
Cockburn Central’s multitude
of shop fronts we’ll more than
likely see a few more gems like
Cafe Royal pop up over coming
months. Here’s hoping.

HE term draper
conjures up images
of bleak mill towns in
England’s north.
But this speccy North Coogee
home in Draper Street is more
in keeping with the word’s
modern usage in fashion, where
it applies to a highly skilled
person tasked with turning
concept into wearable reality.
The innovative design of this
beachside home, with 329sqm
of living space on a tidy 316sqm
block, lay in dozens of clever
(and sustainable) ideas carried
through with precision and flair.
For example, the formal
dining room transforms into an
alfresco entertainment area by
pushing back a series of bifold
doors on either side—one on to
a very private courtyard garden,
and spa, the other to a smaller
internal courtyard.
A “wave” plaster wall in
the dining area ripples with
changeable light setting the
mood for parties or romantic
dinners.
The light-filled living area

theatre at the touch of a button.
Entering this three-bedroom/
two-bathroom home via the
spacious vestibule you’ll be
struck by the golden bamboo
floors, funky modern chandelier
soaring overhead and the
“floating” bamboo stairs to the
upper level.
The kitchen in the huge open
kitchen/living area, is dropdead-gorgeous from the massive
“lace” stainless steel island
bench to the sleek and glossy
black cupboards and drawers.
A series of overhead
cupboards open and close at the
push of a button, and the huge,
double fridge/freezer (with
ice maker) sits behind a set of
massive mirror-black doors.
The bedrooms are upstairs,
two with semi-ensuite and
walk-in robes. One has views
to the South Fremantle power
station, the other opens onto a
balcony with ocean views.
The main bedroom is a huge
space, with massive floor-toceiling windows overlook the
courtyard and spa.
It’s fronted by a lounge/
sitting area, where a balcony has
views to Garden Island.
There’s also a massively
decadent ensuite, with a red
and black feature wall in Italian
Bisazza mosaic tiles and a deep,
deep bath. Behind the wall are
“his and hers” showers.
All the fittings and
furniture (including the home
entertainment system, iPod
control station and TV) of
this former display home are
included in the sale.
There’s absolutely nothing to
do and no furniture to organise,
just grab your towel and bathers
and move in for a fantastic
beachside lifestyle.

Not all Electricians are the
same... most contractors don’t
turn up when they say, if at all
& when they do they are often
rude, unpleasant & leave you
with an unfair bill, a messy
house & feeling really annoyed.
Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”.
I know good, reliable tradies are
hard to find, that’s why I
guarantee you’ll have me arrive
on time. I’ll be courteous,
respectful & in uniform. I will
only do the best quality work - no
short cuts, then clean up after
the job & leave you with a smile.
If you’re not happy at the end
you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

November 17 - November 24, 2012
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
By being yourself, you can set up a
healthy synergy with those who have
some sway. In uncertain times, creative solutions
are required. Rigid methods simply don’t work
when change and flow is the going reality. There will
be some who get their noses out of joint. Be brave.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
Solitude is a good place for getting on
with the work that you most want to do.
Embrace the lack of attention. It’s a definite bonus.
Keep to the middle. There are no accolades for
a taking a gentle approach – but there is a deep
satisfaction that arises in the heart when you do.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
Mercury is retrograde. He’s unpicking
all the good communication that
has gone before and opening up the ground to start
again. This causes even the unflappable to flap.
Perhaps there were things unsaid and you were
resting on uneasy ground. Get it straight this time.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
The Moon is travelling through
Capricorn. This has you craving
independence, individuality and efficiency. You aren’t
in the mood to be so lost in emotions that nothing
gets done. This may seem to be out of character
but the opposite always exists somewhere inside us.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
Feeling empowered is often more of
a challenge than resting comfortably
in powerlessness. There’s a certain responsibility
that comes with power, that makes complaint seem
fickle or petty. Life will slow you down and make you
aware of every move you make.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Mercury going retrograde, puts a rather
large stick in your spokes. Communication
is likely to be the bone of contention. To know this
will allow you a few preparatory moments in which
to remind yourself to be particularly aware, lest a
beautiful thing goes pear-shaped.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Venus is travelling through Libra. She
is mellowing out the rough edges –
and there are a few. Mercury being retrograde in
Scorpio, could lead to a spate of incidents where
people shoot themselves in the foot whilst trying to
say difficult things. Have compassion.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
The Sun is still in Scorpio – as is
Saturn. This is a bit like trying to
dance wildly around your grandfather. Let’s hope
you have a really cool grandfather. Metaphorically
your aliveness is pitted against ancient beliefs that
will either inhibit it, or make it very wise indeed.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Mars has nearly finished his journey
through Sagittarius. On the positive side,
he has brought a blast of vitality. On the negative
side, he might have increased your blood-pressure.
As he prepares to depart, check if there is anything
left to do whilst you have the energy.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
The rising Moon is travelling across
the mountain peak you reside upon.
She adds a reflective note to your song. That’s a
good thing, because it is the sensitive, intuitive side
of your life that is presently getting all the juice. Be
as soulful as you please. Drop efficiency for now.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
The overriding theme is home. What is
it? You are keen to leap forth and make
your mark in the world but there’s not much point in
leaping into things that aren’t going to truly nourish
your spirit and individuality. To speed things up, give
yourselves an eternity to decide.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Be sure not to be at sixes and sevens
with your friends. There’s not much
point in doing battle with your allies. That means
when your emotions start running like a school of
barracuda, come back to stillness, non-action and
a very adult wisdom. This will bring you home.
