History & achievements
Unics Kazan comes off
a great season that saw
the team come within one
result the Eurocup crown.
This season the club has a
chance to do even more as
it begins its campaign in
the Turkish Airlines Euroleague qualifying rounds. Unics
reached the Eurocup Finals sporting a 20-2 record, which
helped Andrew Goudelock earn Eurocup MVP honors and
Andrea Trinchieri to be chosen as the Eurocup Coach of the
Year. Valencia Basket Club stopped Unics’s march to the
title, but Unics bounced back by lifting the Russian Cup
trophy and reaching the VTB League semifinals. Founded in
1991, Unics soon became the perfect ambassador for the
sports-crazy Republic of Tatarstan in the Russian
Federation and within a decade was challenging for titles.
The club reached the Russian League finals in 2001
and 2002, the year in which it also made it to the Saporta
Cup semifinals. Its hard work paid off in 2003, when Unics
downed CSKA in overtime to lift the Russian Cup. In 2004,
Kazan was home to the FIBA Europe League final four and
Unics made the most of it by downing Maroussi to win its
first continental title. Unics made its ULEB Cup debut in the
2005-06 season and already reached the semifinals the
following year, before losing against Real Madrid. Unics also
reached the 2008 ULEB Cup Final Eight. Everything clicked
in the 2010-11 Eurocup as Unics won its regular season and
Last 16 groups and swept its quarterfinal series. Once in
the Finals, Unics thrashed Cedevita Zagreb in the semifinals
and bested Cajasol Sevilla in the championship game.
Marko Popovic amassed 18 points and 11 assists to
earn Finals MVP honors. Unics made its Euroleague debut a
successful one in 2011-12 season by going all the way to
the playoffs. No longer satisfied with being near the top,
expect Unics Kazan to challenge for plenty of silverware
this season and try to reach the Euroleague through the
qualifying rounds.

Kazan
“In general the meaning of Kazan is great: it’s a meeting
point of two worlds. That’s why Kazan has two origins:
western and eastern ones and you can meet them at each
crossroad: here, because of continuous interaction, they
were compressed, became good friends, and turned into
something very original in its nature”
Alexander Herzen, Russian publicist,
writer, philosopher
Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, third
capital of Russia, it’s one of the largest economic, scientific
and cultural centres in the country. The city celebrated its
1,000th anniversary in 2005. About 1,2 mln people –
representatives of over 100 nationalities – live in Kazan in
the atmosphere of cultural, religious and linguistic diversity.
The Kazan Kremlin, a unique complex of archeological,
historical and architectural monuments enrolled into the
UNESCO World Heritage list, is the main tourist attraction
of Kazan. It is open for visits and tours on a daily basis.
Tourists visiting the territory of the architectural
conservation area will see such places of interest as the
15
‘falling’ Syuyumbike Tower, Savior Tower, Annunciation
Cathedral and Kul-Sharif, one of the largest mosques in the
world.
There are all the reasons to call the thousand-year-old
Kazan a ‘young’ city, as it’s the largest student city of
Russia. There are nearly 200,000 students from 67
countries studying in Kazan, Russia’s top higher education
institutions are concentrated here, among them Kazan
(Volga Region) Federal University, Tupolev Kazan National
Research Technical University and Kazan National Research
Technological University. Students of Kazan are always
among winners of national and international contests and
holders of state scholarships by international and national
funds, they also excel in sports. And it became one of the
strongest ideas around which the Kazan 2013 bid campaign
was built.
16
Did you know that...
If you get a closer look at the monument to Karl Fuks,
Rector of Kazan University, installed in the public
garden near the Kazan National Cultural Centre, you will
see that the image of his face is carved on the knob of
the walking cane.
Kazan has traditionally been one of top science cities
in Russia. It’s in Kazan University where Nikolay
Lobachevsky developed the non-Euclidean geometry,
Alexander Butlerov invented the theory of chemical
structure for organic compounds, Karl Claus discovered the
chemical element Ruthenium, Yevgeny Zavoisky opened
the Electronic Paramagnetic Resonance and Semyon
Altshuler made a theoretical prediction of the Acoustic
Paramagnetic Resonance. The 19th century saw the
establishment of the Department of Oriental Studies in
Kazan to whose development Professor Alexander Kasembek, a famous orientalist, historian and philologist, greatly
contributed. Studies made by Professor Baudouin de
Courtenay, an outstanding linguist and Slavist, served as a
foundation for the Kazan School of Linguistics in the mid1870s.
17
Various renowned scientists have worked in Kazan’s
universities and scientific research centres at different
times: physicians Karl Fuks and Nikolay Vinogradov;
biochemist Vladimir Engelgardt; surgeons Alexander V.
Vishnevsky and Alexander A. Vishnevsky; neurologist
Leonid Omorokov; anatomists Peter Lesgaft and Evmeny
Aristov; physiologists Nikolay Kovalevsky and Nikolay
Mislavsky; astronomers Mikhail Lyapunov, Marian Kovalsky,
Dmitry Dubyago, Alexander Dubyago; Russian historians
Afanasy Schapov and Nikolay Likhachev; legal theorist
Alexander Chebyshev-Dmitriev; orientalists Khristian Fren
and Ilya Berezin; linguists Vasily Bogoroditsky, Nikolay
Krushevsky and many others.
The thousand-year-old Kazan has a busy cultural life.
Aside from classical art, the city facilitates the development
of contemporary art trends as well. Such cultural events as
the Feodor Chaliapin International Opera Festival, Rudolph
Nureyev
International
Ballet
Festival,
White
Lilac
International Festival named after Sergey Rachmaninov,
Kazan Autumn International Open Air Opera Festival,
Concordia Modern Music Festival, Aksenov-fest Literature
Festival, Golden Minbar International Festival of Muslim
Cinema have already become annual for Kazan. There are 9
theatres, 34 state museums, privately owned art galleries,
Saidashev State Big Concert Hall and 2 philharmonics. The
La Primavera Kazan State Chamber Orchestra is known far
beyond the boundaries of Kazan. National Russian and
Tatar holidays are celebrated in Kazan in a big way. Kazan
actively develops its infrastructure; new sporting venues,
industrial and social facilities, residential premises,
roadways and traffic interchanges are being built.
The city’s economics follows an innovative way of
development; Idea Technopark, one of the largest
technoparks in Europe, and IT Park, the biggest IT centre in
Russia, have been successfully functioning for several years
in Kazan.
Kazan is also a driving force for Russian sports
development and is a home for many multi-titled athletes
and sports clubs, who compete at national and international
championships of various size and in different sports,
including those that are on the Olympic programme. Many
high-profile competitions have been held at Games venues
over the last few years.
18
The fact that Kazan is a sports city is proved by Kazan
citizens’ involvement in grassroots events that feature such
sports as football, ice hockey, volleyball, etc. The CrossCountry Race of Nations and Ski Track of Russia are
especially popular in Kazan and bring together tens of
thousands of sports enthusiasts aged from 4 to 82. Staging
the 2013 Summer Universiade has given a new impetus to
the development of children’s, youth and university sports
not only in Kazan, but all over Russia.
Kazan is going to host the 16th FINA World
Championships in 2015. The city is also in the list of
Russian candidate cities for matches of the FIFA World Cup
in 2018.
19

Crossing the border
Getting a visa
Visa is a necessary requirement for a foreign citizen
who wants to visit Russia. Depending on the purpose of the
travel, there are 5 types of visas: private, diplomatic,
business, transit, visa for family members.
Visa is issued by a Russian embassy or consulate in
your country. Visa application can be sent by post or
submitted personally.
Visa is issued no later than 20 working days after
receipt of the application in case other is prescribed by
international treaties signed by the Russian Federation. The
day of application is defined as a day when all required
documents have been properly filled in and submitted.
Should a foreign state issue a longer visa obtaining period
for Russian citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Russian Federation may prolong the issue period for foreign
citizens according to the international principle of
mutuality under international agreements.
A foreign national may be denied a Russian visa. The
state body is not entitled to reveal the reason of refusal.
Passport control
For crossing the state border of Russia foreign citizens must
have an identification document and a visa.
Mutual visa-free regime is applied between Russia and a
number of countries. Therefore, for entering the territory of
Russia the citizens of these countries need to have only an
identification document and an invitation. The main
identification document for entering the territory of Russia
is a foreign travel passport.
A simplified procedure of crossing the state border is
established between Russia and a number of countries. This
procedure provides a visa-free regime and the possibility to
use an internal passport.
A list of countries where visa-free or simplified procedure is
applied as well as the procedures for receiving the visas
and invitations can be found in consular agencies and
diplomatic missions of the Russian Federation in the
country of residence.
Attention!
A simplified (visa-free) procedure of entering the territory
of Russia is established for the members of the official
delegations, who applied for participation in the
21
Universiade. Crossing the border a participant of the
Universiade shall present a valid identification document
recognised by the Russian Federation and the accreditation.
On passing through passport control it is necessary to
fill in the migration card.
The forms are distributed at the point of passage
across the border. In Moscow airports Domodedovo,
Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo (terminal “D”) and in Kazan
Airport (terminal “1A”) migration cards are issued
automatically with the use of printing machines. In other
airports migration cards are filled in manually. With the
purpose of time saving it is reasonable to fill in the
migration cards in advance, the forms are distributed on
board.

accordance with the data stated in the documents
The migration card shall be kept by the owner within all the
period of stay in Russia and shall be submitted to a border
control officer when exiting Russia.
It is necessary to present the migration card during
the check-in at the hotel or Universiade Village. A duplicate
is issued in case of the migration card loss or damage. The
duplicate can be issued while exiting from the territory of
Russia at the point of passage across the state border.

City transport
Buses
Kazan’s bus depot is composed of
comfortable buses made in Russia
(NefAz, MAZ) and China (Higer,
Golden Dragon). Since 2007 more
than 2,500 outdated buses were
taken out of service and are being
gradually replaced by high-capacity
buses that meet Euro 3 requirements. This enables to reach
a higher level of security, significantly lessen volume of city
traffic and thus improve the city’s environment.
24
Single journey fare - 19 rubles, transport card single
journey fare - 17 rubles.
Trams
The tram system development
in Kazan dates back to more than
a hundred years ago. Modern
vehicles that are used now were
made in Russia. Not so long ago
the
process
of
tram
depot
modernisation was started by
using spacious and comfortable cars, that allows to increase
passenger throughput significantly. A tram is considered to
be one of the most comfortable means of transport because
its functioning is not affected by the city traffic. Kazan’s
tram depot also has some sightseeing and tourist routes.
There is also a buffet car running around the city.
Single journey fare - 15 rubles, transport card single
journey fare - 14 rubles.
Trolley buses
The majority of trolley buses
functioning in Kazan were made
in Russia. Almost all vehicles are
of a high capacity, have 3 stages
of illumination and an improved
ventilation system. Right now a
trolley bus is an environmentally
friendly means of transport with a
convenient schedule (every 8-10 minutes) and almost 24/7
service.
Single journey fare - 16 rubles, transport card single
journey fare - 15 rubles.
Underground
This is the youngest mode of
transport in Kazan. The first
underground line was opened in
2005. The line serves 10 stations
and connects two banks of the
25
Kazanka River. Three new underground stations – Yashlek,
Severny Vokzal, Aviastroitelnaya – were constructed
especially for the 27th Summer Universiade and launched
on May 9, 2013. Among the main advantages of the
underground system are a precise schedule and absence of
traffic jams.
Single journey fare - 16 rubles, transport card single
journey fare - 15 rubles.
Taxi
Three
taxi
companies
were
appointed Official Carriers for the
27th Summer Universiade. All of
them guarantee safe and highquality transport service.
The accredited taxi services can be ordered by dialing the
following phone numbers:
OOO Taxi 24 Kazan, tel.: +7 (843) 2100021;
