PRESIDENT‟S REPORT
Hello everyone
Here we are at almost the end of November and our Christmas party is not too far away. Members are
reminded that bookings have to be in fairly soon, in fact by the 27th at the latest. A number of our
musicians are attending so we will have a fine selection of sit-ins on the day. Remember you have to be a
financial member, otherwise you will be required to pay $25.
Thanks to all the people who turned up for the second of our functions at the Southern Cross Club in
Jamison, it was another successful day, enjoyed by all. Next year we will be doing some more afternoons
there. In fact next year is already organised with first of all the 12th of January concert at the Woden
Southern Cross Club. It will be great to hear the Sweet Lowdowns with all the fine musicians who started
here in Canberra, plus Peter Locke from Sydney.
Next comes the visit to Sydney for the cruise with the Sydney Jazz Club, the band for the day being the
Bridge City/Black Mountain combination. These guys are playing really well together, and I am sure will
be very entertaining on the day. Prices have gone up again, but it is still worth the trip to Sydney for the
lovely day on the Harbour. Note that the we will get another opportunity to hear the Bridge City/Black
Mountain boys when they play for us at our special concert at the Austrian Club, Mawson on 15 April.
Due to our splendid committee, we have monthly events planned for the first half of 2012. We will be
having another Pool Party at the home of Jenny and John, there will be the annual visit to Robertson and
more afternoons at the Southern Cross Club Jamison as I mentioned before.
As this will be the last newsletter for the year, I want to wish everyone a great Christmas and a very happy
New Year. I would also like to thank all the members of the committee who make my job so easy. To all
members, do book early for our functions as without you we could not manage.
Our newsletter editor, Linda, asked me to pass on a big thank-you to Margaret & Geoffrey Hawker for their
efforts to help us out with distribution of our last newsletter – things never go according to plan and they
had a fair bit of running around to do which they did most happily and with much enthusiasm.
Cheers to all

LooKING FOR OUR MYSTERY DEPOSITOR!
Some 2 months ago, Treasurer Ron noticed that $25 had been paid to the Canberra Jazz Club via a transfer
from the Civic Post Office. Unfortunately, no details were transmitted with the deposit so we have a
mystery $25 sitting in our account. If you can shed some light on the mystery, please contact Ron.

UPCOMING CJC FUNCTIONS
Sunday 4 December – the CJC Christmas Party. It was such a great day last year at the Belconnen
Bowling Club at Hawker that we thought it worth repeating. The Golden Roast has catered most
successfully for our Christmas Party for the past two years so they will be catering again (we‟ve asked
for more beetroot this year!). Details on page 8.
Thursday 12 January 2012 – concert at the Southern Cross Club, Woden. As predicted, the previously
advertised show featuring the „Trumpeters‟ on tour was cancelled. Showcasing in their place will be the
very popular Sweet Lowdowns from Melbourne with special guest, Sydney pianist Peter Locke. We
need you support please to make this show a success. BOOK NOW! Details on page 10.
Thursday 26 January – Sydney Jazz Club‟s annual Australia Day jazz harbour cruise, this year
featuring the Bridge City/Black Mountain Jazz Band. Great company, great jazz and incredible sights as
thousands of Sydneysiders take to the water. Details on page 9.
Sunday 19 February – Pool Party at the Maddens. Please refer below for details.
Sundays 18 March & 17 June – another couple of afternoon gigs of great trad jazz at the Southern
Cross Club, Jamison (Wests). Join us for three hours of live jazz from 1.00pm. Details soon.
Sunday 15 April – a special afternoon of jazz at the Austrian Club, Mawson featuring our favourite
combo of Sydney‟s Bridge City Band and our remaining playing musos from the Black Mountain Band.
Another date for your diaries!! Details next newsletter.
Sunday 13 May (tbc) – annual bus trip to the Robertson Pub.
POOL PARTY AT THE MADDENS
12.00 PM – 4.00 PM, Sunday 19 February 2012
(weather permitting)
BYO everything!
John & Jenny Madden are again offering their backyard for a party by the pool and an afternoon of jazz as
we like it …..trad and more trad. For all our fine musicians out there, this will be another opportunity to
sit in on a jam session or two. Many thanks to our musos last year who entertained us so well and we
hope to see you all (and some new faces) at this year’s party.
Regular drummer, Garry Owen is taking off shortly for a 12 months holiday around Aussie land so if there’s
a muso out there who can help us out with some drumming for this event and over the coming year, that
would be great.
So, BYO your lunch, plates, drinks, and a chair if you can easily transport one – there will be some seating
but probably not enough to go round. And don't forget the swimmers if you’re game!
To make sure that there is space for all, John & Jenny would appreciate knowing numbers beforehand.
Please telephone 6251 2621 or email to: [email protected].

Did you know?
CJC member Tony Lamb was recently in New York‟s Central Park and he
snapped a photo of jazz legend Duke Ellington‟s Memorial, not far from
Harlem. The Memorial is some 7.6 metres high and was the dream of
cabaret singer and pianist Bobby Short who was a huge fan of the “Duke‟ –
who died in 1974 at the age of 75. It took Bobby some 18 years of planning
to see the Memorial unveiled in 1997.
Tony discovered that the Duke‟s full name was „Edward Kennedy “Duke”
Ellington‟. I‟m sure you are all ahead of us here, but Tony noted that the
“Duke” had the same name as the late US Senator, Edward Kennedy.

Bits and Pieces
The following article has been contributed by one of our life members, Bill Wheatley. Ed.
MY BRUSH WITH JAZZ – W.H. (BILL) WHEATLEY
Born 4th May 1935 at Gunning NSW
After WW2 my dad and I met up with some old diggers
who showed us a few chords on ukulele and guitar and I
became interested in Jazz music after hearing them (the
old diggers) doing the „Hot Club of France‟.
After listening to the local bands which were playing in
Canberra at the time – the Les Pogson Band and one led
by Muriel Hartigan – I decided to start playing piano (by
ear).
Dad and I became involved with a small local vaudeville
company called „The Cracker Jack Follies‟. I played ukulele, sang and pounded piano, accompanying a wonderful
female impersonator, Ernie Campion, star of the show.
My greatest thrill (although I did not recognise it at the
time) was touring with the „Cootamundra Jazz Band‟ playing piano. We toured and played southern NSW and the
ACT. I also played with the „New Zenith Jazz Band‟ from
Sydney at the old Leichardt Stadium with [Americans]
„Red Norvo‟ (vibes) and Eugene Wright (bass) on the program.
Towards the end of my playing days I was fortunate to
play with the finest classic jazz group in Canberra, the
„Capital City Jazz Band‟ – consisting of Greg Gibson
(clarinet), Keon Bell (trumpet), Scotty Laycock
(trombone), John Birmingham (drums), John Hammon
(bass), Ken Trat (banjo) and myself on piano. Boy was it
good!
After this I formed a little reading band (although I did not

What’s been happening
Sunday afternoon jazz at Jamison – OCTOBER 2011
The second gig for the “Canberra Jazz Club Band” at the Southern Cross Club, Jamison
was another great success.
Once again, many thanks to all of
you who supported us on the day
and a special thanks to our musicians who gave us 3 hours of terrific
jazz.
Special guest muso on the day and
currently at the School of Music,
Caleb Wearne, enjoyed himself
immensely and passed along that
“this trad stuff is all right”!
Around 45 members joined us on
the day and most also had lunch
and it all made for another great
afternoon out.

The next appearance of the Canberra Jazz Club Band will be 18
March – mark it in your diaries now!
A tribute to John McCarthy (1930-2011) by his friend Bill Haesler OAM
When John McCarthy died suddenly at home from a suspected heart attack on 6th
October 20011 Australian jazz lost one of its greatest jazzmen. And I lost a dear
and long-time friend.
John [Johnny, 'Darky'] McCarthy (clarinet, alto/soprano/tenor saxes and flute)
was born in Sydney, NSW on 6th January 1930. He became interested in jazz at
school during his early teens and took up clarinet at age 15.
He joined the Riverside Jazz Band in 1947 and was with them until 1953. He then
left his day job and remained a professional musician for the rest of his life.
From 1953 John worked casually with the Port Jackson Jazz Band becoming a
full-time member in 1955. In 1958 he was also with the Ray Price Quartet but left
both groups in late 1962 to join Dick Hughes' Quartet and later Graeme Bell's All
Stars in the mid 60s.
For over 20 years John played with, then led, the Paddington-Woollahra RSL house band. In 1973 he was also with
Bill Haesler's Washboard Band and in 1974 became a founder member of Bob Barnard's Jazz Band including
tours of Australia and Asia, Europe and the US.
After leaving Bob in 1986 he freelanced, led small groups and worked with Geoff Bull's Olympia Jazz Band (19892006). He retired musically in 2007.
John recorded prolifically during his 60-year professional career and, as a popular sideman, appeared on countless
concert platforms at festivals and as support for visiting jazz artists.
Dick Hughes with Bill Haesler wrote a long article about John‟s life for the Sydney Morning Herald. Read more at:

Sweet Lowdowns
with special guest
Sydney pianist
Peter Locke
Top of the Cross, Canberra Southern Cross Club, Woden
Thursday 12 January, 8.30pm
Melbourne's Sweet Lowdowns
present classic jazz in the tradition
of French gypsy swing, Western
swing, 1920‟s New Orleans roots
and 1930‟s speakeasy jazz and
blues.
With a vast repertoire including
original tunes, this band has been
impressing audiences across
Australia since 2003, and in 2008
won the Australian Jazz Bell
Award for Best Australian Classic
Jazz Album with their second
album "
Cuttin' Capers"
.
Sweet Lowdowns and insert: Peter Locke
The band's name refers to the
Gershwin tune and the Woody
Allen film of the same name,
"Sweet and Lowdown".
Sweet Lowdowns consists of Sandra Talty (vocals, drums), Michael McQuaid (reeds, trumpet), Liam
O'Connell (guitar) and Richard Mander (string bass), all of whom once called Canberra home.
For a special one-night show, Sweet Lowdowns will be joined by Sydney pianist Peter Locke. One of
Australia's top jazz pianists, Peter is in high demand and has toured the USA several times. He is the master
of many jazz styles and few musicians could move so seamlessly from interpretations of the works of Bix
Beiderbecke and Duke Ellington to be-Bop and beyond.
