PROPOSAL
JEFFREY MACFARLANE
2013 MINI TRANSAT
THE OBJECTIVE
After spending 15 years in the sailing industry as both a
professional sailor and boat builder, working alongside
some of the most famous names and with some of the
best Grand-Prix and One-Design programs in the world,
Jeffrey MacFarlane is starting his own singlehanded
Mini Campaign.
Shorthanded sailing has always been a great interest of
Jeffrey’s and during the 2011 North American season,
he was able to focus on it almost exclusively, posting
class wins and podium finishes in six of the seven races
he entered, including a first place finish in the
prestigious Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race.
Building on his interest and success in 2011, Jeff is now
looking to secure the necessary funding to compete in
the 2013 Mini Transat Race, commonly thought of as
the most extreme single handed transatlantic race in
the world.
Jeff is confident that with his expertise and experience,
along with the proper training and support, he can be
the first American to win the Mini Transat Race.

2013 MINI TRANSAT
THE RACE
The Mini Transat is the most extreme single handed race in the world due
to its length and the small size of the boat. Every other year, the 4,000
nautical mile trans-Atlantic race starts on the east coast of France in
Douarnenez. After a brief stopover in the Canary Islands, sailors continue
westward to the Caribbean nation of Guadeloupe, finishing off in Pointe á
Pitre.
The extremely demanding race is a true test for the best sailors, as its
route covers difficult and adverse weather conditions and because sailors
must drive through pure physical and mental exhaustion as they work
around the clock, sleeping for only 10 to 20 minutes at a time to ensure
the boat’s peak performance and make the best tactical decisions.
The Mini Transat Race is the breeding ground for the world’s top short
handed sailors, including Michel Desjoyeaux, two time winner of the
Vendee Globe, from France and Dame Ellen MacArthur, 2nd place finisher
in the Vendee Globe, from England.

Jeff’s diverse and abundant experience racing, building, preparing, and modifying high performance sailboats,
including Wild Oats (CBTF R/P 60), Mustang (Swan 42), Le Pengouin (Open 60) and various Farr 40s, Melges 32s,
and International 14s has prepared him well for his Mini Campaign.
Throughout 2011, his first shorthanded sailing season, Jeff finished first in the double-handed divisions of the
Marblehead to Halifax Race, the Ida Lewis Distance Race, and the Greenport Ocean Race. He finished second in
the New England Solo Twin Championship and the Vineyard Race, and third in the Indian Harbor Stratford Shoal
Race.
Already in 2012, Jeff has completed two transatlantic crossings. First, on the Open 60, Le Pengouin, and most
recently aboard the Class 40, EDF Energies Nouvelles, while competing in the Transat Quebec St-Malo Race,
finishing second in the Vintage Class.
In May, Jeff sailed with Sebastien Rogues on Eole Generation GDF Suez, a Class40, in the competitive Atlantic Cup,
finishing tied for 6th place. They will be teaming up again this October for the Class 4o Worlds in La Rochelle,
France.

THE IMAGE OF SAILING
Sailing, once thought of as a classic past time, is now recognized as an extreme sport. Competitive sailing,
especially single handed Mini Transat sailing, is a true human adventure, compelling to almost anyone. It
requires sailors to be courageous, intelligent, and determined. Not only does the sailor compete against
his competitors, but also against nature – the power of wind and the force of the waves.
This extreme version of sailing still evokes feelings of luxury, glamour, and tradition, but spectators also know that…
MINI TRANSAT SAILING
IS
EXTREME
Sailors are on their own and must perform
around the clock – there is no rest or break.
HIGH-TECH
Minis are made of carbon fiber, making
them light, strong, and fast!
CLEAN TECHNOLOGY
The boats use the most modern equipment,
but are powered only by wind.

BRANDING OPPORTUNITIES
The Mini is a blank canvas and a perfect communication
platform. The hull and sails can be designed and covered
with your company’s colors and logos. While racing, the
boat will be displayed in a variety of media formats,
including television, radio, print, and on the internet (see
next page). When the boat is not racing, it will be placed in
highly trafficked coastal areas for targeted audiences to take
notice of and visit up close.
