This story is, like many Cape Breton yarns, loosely based on real life experiences. This little story tells the tale of “The Blueberry Wars.” I can remember vividly each Summer during the blueberry picking season what we came to refer to as “The Blueberry Wars.” Blueberries were a very popular commodity and the mothers used to make blueberry pie, blueberry cake, blueberry grunt, blueberry jam, blueberry muffins and just about anything else blueberries could be crammed into. The boys would pick blueberries and when we tried to sell them in our neighbourhood, the mothers would argue like they were in a Turkish bazaar and we usually ended up with very little for our pickings. But that was just amateur stuff. The real pros were two rivals who originally came to Cape Breton via Holland. They lived If you venture to downtown North Sydney, stop by where near Dutch Brook and came to town to sell produce all the old library used to be on Commecial Street and you Summer. will find a new business that has opened its doors to cater to the active outdoors clientele. It’s called Escape Outdoors and that is exactly what you’ll find inside. I spoke with co-owner Paul Finney and he said that there was an unmet need in the outdoor specialty clothing line and associated sports gear and accessories and that was the reason for opening the new store. Until now, shoppers had to order online or travel to Halifax to purchase this outdoor line of clothing and sportswear. The store has been opened about a month now and Paul said that the local shoppers have been responding quite favorably to the selection that he has on hand. In the above photo you can see co-owner Paul Finney restocking the inventory in Escape Outdoors. The store is open for your shopping convenience from Tuesday to Thursday from 11 AM - 7 PM - Friday and Saturday from 11 AM until 6 PM. In addition to the extensive clothing and sportswear inventory, Paul mentioned that beginning in the Fall, there is a studio connected to the store and there will be Yoga classes and community groups will be able to use the studio for their meetings and various outdoor related activities. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the above photo shows only a small portion of the entire store, so stop by at 299 Commercial Street in North Sydney or you can phone them at 241-4453, visit the website www.escapeoutdoors.ca, or check out their Facebook Page. Now there is no need to travel away from Cape Breton to purchase your casual lifestyle and sportswear apparel. The two would come to the neighbourhood and set up a little produce wagon and paint a sign with the prices listed. Just like clockwork, a rival seller would show up and take one look at the sign prices and paint a lower price on his sign. This would prompt an immediate response and the original seller would then reduce his price. This went on for about a half hour and the whole neighbourhood would show up for the spectacle. Eventually one of the sellers would leave in disgust and the winner would sell out his produce at the “sale price.” The mothers all thought they were getting a great bargain. What we did not know until they retired was that the two sellers were the Van Deusen brothers and their little bit of theatre was all a stage performance and a great sales technique. We eventually found out that at different parts and times in our town, the brothers would act as “winner” and “loser” and would always go home with their carts empty. When interviewed for a local news story, the brothers claimed that it was a great way to put on a little entertainment and make everybody feel good. They would say in their stilted English “Iz gud for bizniss.” They were excellent produce sellers but also very astute salesmen. Originally formed in Ontario in 1977, Saga released 2 albums in the late 70’s before they hit their big break in 1980 with the release of the “Silent Knight” album. For the next 5 years the band produced some of the most innovative, refreshing and intelligent rock music on the radio; songs such as “Wind Him Up”, “What Do I Know”, “Don’t Be Late”, “The Flyer” and “Only Time Will Tell” highlighted a band that was on fire, due in no small part to the amazing vocal skills of Michael Sadler, the keyboard and vocal wizardry of Jim Gilmour and the fret work of Ian and Jim Crichton. Must not forget the drumming contribution of original member Steve Negus either. Together they delivered music that was innovative, clever and stylish. The band never really had a huge following in the United States, but they were, and still are, very popular in Europe and of course have a dedicated fan base here in Canada. There were some changes in the band’s line up over the last two decades; most notably the departure of drummer Steve Negus, with Brian Doerner (ex of Helix) filling his spot, and Michael Sadler left in 2007 for family reasons, only to return in 2011. It’s been 5 years and 1 album since then, so it’s great to hear that Michael’s pipes are back for this album. The CD’s name is a clever two-play on words; it is the band’s twentieth album and it also refers the eye surgery Jim Gilmour had recently, giving him….you guessed it. I must admit that the album starts off a bit dodgy with the song “Six Feet Under”, because it sounds like another Canadian band-The Box, but within 30 seconds the Saga we’ve come to love is welcomed back like an old friend, with that signature grandiose sound. At times throughout this album I think you’ll hear some similarities to Styx and Yes as well. The Saga ‘musical cookie-cutter’ was used to make “Anywhere You Wanna Go”, “Ellery”, “One Of These Days” and “Show And Tell”, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. These songs are all good tracks. If I had to pick out the best tracks on this CD, I’d choose the following; “Spin It Again” is definitely the heaviest song here and most like Saga’s back catalogue of great songs. “Till The Well Runs Dry” bubbles under a bit before boiling over to a full on rocker, but the ballad “Lost For Words” takes the cake as the best track on the album, thanks again to Michael Sadler’s smooth vocal delivery. I give Saga a lot of credit for not just hanging in there for so long, but for still being relevant and for putting out album after album of great music. Some of their Canadian peers who started out in the 1980’s have seen better days, and released albums that were just terrible. This CD will keep the faithful happy and may just grab the ears of some new fans as well. NORTHSIDE SHORTS HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to Krista Fortune, we hope you had a great day! Sarah and Byran.
