Letter from the coa
What an outstanding year it has been! The Marvin Lewis
Community Fund (MLCF) has been busy fulfilling its mission. I am
pleased to share with you our 2007 End of the Year Report and
hope it will show you the results of your investment in the MLCF
and our community. There is still so much to do. We are only
able to continue our work in the community with the generosity
of friends, family, partners, donors, staff, interns, volunteers,
recipient organizations, Quarterback and Coaches Club
members, and our Board of Directors. For our initiatives to
succeed, we’re relying on your continued support. Together,
we can provide resources that help make positive change in
the futures of our young people. I hope you’ll take a moment to
review the report. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to
every individual and company that contributed to the Fund.
As you know, it takes a team of individuals with a shared goal to
succeed. If you are not involved with the MLCF, we encourage
you to join us as we work together to empower, educate and
inspire individuals in our region!!!
My deepest thanks,
Marvin Lewis

Spearheaded a free transportation program called Cruisin for a
Cure… Are you on Board? The campaign transports
qualified women to and from the ProScan Pink Ribbon Center
in Over-the-Rhine for free mammograms and helps promote
breast cancer awareness.
Through the support of Cincinnati Bell and other sponsors and
partners proceeds from the Marvin Lewis Golf Classic helped
award eight Cincinnati-based college-bound students $20,000
scholarships to the school of their choice.
Funded a Play it Smart coach at Aiken High School as part of
our Youth Development through Sports initiative. The academic
coach works with the football players to improve GPA’s,
enhance life skills development, increase opportunities for
community service and increase parental and family
involvement.
Worked with more than 200 volunteers, 30 Bengals players
and 20 contributing companies to build a lifetime youth fitness
course and playground for the families of Avondale and its
surrounding communities.
The Marvin Lewis Coach of the Year Award, sponsored by
National City, was presented to Troy Everhart of Winton Woods
High School for his commitment to his student-athletes both on
and off the field.
Presented the Pink Football Award to Tracie Metzger for her
strength, courage and perseverance to overcome breast
cancer at a sold-out Football 101 which raised over $160,000.
Contributed almost $2,000,000 to make positive change and
dreams come true in the Cincinnati Region.

Presented by Ignition, the Clinic was held at Paul Brown
Stadium on June 8th and 9th. Over 250 youth, junior high,
and high school football coaches gathered to learn football
fundamentals from the Bengals coaching staff and the area’s
top college and high school coaches, including Ohio State’s
Jim Tressel. MLCF recognizes the key to reaching the youth
football players is through their coaches. Thus, coaches of the
Youth Development through Sports teams are required to
attend the clinic. They learned more than just the x’s and o’s
of football including: coaching philosophy, player
communication, drills, risk management, life skills
development, leadership, health, safety, nutrition, team
development, proper training techniques, and skills to help
create a drug free environment for the youth of our region.

Presented by National City, the Marvin Lewis Coach of the Year
Award was given to Troy Everhart of Winton Woods High School
for his continued commitment to his student-athletes both on
and off the field. Coach Everhart led the Warriors to three FAVC
championships as well as appearances in the Division II State
Playoffs in 2005 and 2006. He owns a .600 winning percentage
in his eight years at Winton Woods. More importantly he started
lunch bunch tutoring, after school study tables and SAT/ACT prep
classes.

Hometown Hud
A NFL/United Way initiative taking place in every NFL market on
the same day, Hometown Huddle’s goal is to create a lasting
impression in the community and promote volunteerism. This
year’s project took us to Seasongood Square Park where we
partnered with over 20 organizations including Baker Concrete,
Home Depot, GameTime, Chiquita, Ohio Casualty Group, Best
Buy, Pavestone, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the Cincinnati Park
Board and several other organizations. More than 200
volunteers and 30 Bengals players came together on a rainy
afternoon to lend a hand in building a lifetime youth fitness
course and playground for the kids and families in and
surrounding the Avondale community. Avondale is the fourth
largest neighborhood in Cincinnati with over 18,700 residents.
More than forty percent live at or below the poverty level.
Avondale’s location in respect to major interstates, schools,
churches and YMCA’s made this park a primary location for
renovation.

Youth Development though Sports (YDTS) has used football as
its medium to build leadership and hope for Cincinnati youth
while encouraging academic achievement. Through grants from
the MLCF, costs associated with equipment, uniforms, field, and
referee fees are offset. The student-athletes are rewarded for
their academic accomplishments. All who earn honor roll
distinction are invited to attend a party where Coach Lewis
personally presents each with a medal of achievement. We are
also proud to support the NFL Play It Smart Program and have
teamed up with the Cincinnati Public Schools to fund an
Academic Coach for Aiken High School. Play It Smart is an
educational program targeted at football players from
economically disadvantaged environments where family and
community support are often lacking. The program is designed
to transform student-athletes’ passion for sport and intense
dedication to their team into a force for greater good in their
lives. Play It Smart participants graduate and go on to college at
rates well above those of their peers, all at a cost of less than a
dollar per day per student-athlete.

Presented by National City, the sold-out event takes place at Paul
Brown Stadium during the Bengals bye week. This year we honored
our third Breast Cancer Survivor as part of the National City Breast
Cancer Awareness Campaign. Tracie Metzger received the Marvin
Lewis Community Fund Pink Football Award for her strength,
courage and perseverance to overcome the horrific disease.
After going though six months of chemotherapy and a double
mastectomy with reconstruction, Metzger, a mother of four,
decided to do something to help other young women. Along with
the help of two other survivors, she co-founded Pink Ribbon Girls, a
support network for young women diagnosed with breast cancer, in
October 2001. The event was emceed by former ESPN anchor, Betsy
Ross, and included special guest
20
appearances by NFL Network analyst and former Bengal,
Solomon Wilcots, Cincinnati Bengals kicker Shayne Graham,
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson and Cincinnati
Bengals running back Rudi Johnson, who willingly learned a new
touchdown dance from one of the participants. The evening
consisted of hands-on demonstrations, classroom activities
including breakdown of film, chalk talk, tours of the locker,
training and weight rooms, on-field drills and a silent and live
auction. The event sold out in one hour and part of the funds go
to support Marvin Lewis Community Fund breast cancer
initiatives.

Chad Johnson, Jack Del Rio, L.C. Greenwood, Sam Jones, Tim
Lewis, Archie Griffin, John Thornton and Doug Williams. The 2007
Marvin Lewis Golf Classic featured the second annual “Taste of
22
the Jungle.” Some of Cincinnati’s best restaurants were placed

MinoritiesinMathematics,Science&Engin
eer
ing
Minorities in Mathematics, Science, and Engineering considers
their most significant achievements their students and
teachers. This year they recognized 300 students who excelled
in math and science courses. Students who do well in math
and science are more likely to continue to pursue such
courses - increasing their opportunity to enter college.
A clear example of this excellence is Erica Hill who won the
UC, College of Applied Science Mathematics Competition.
Erica was the first African-American to ever win the
competition. She won free tuition for 2007-08 academic year.
M2SE provides student-centered learning experiences that
lead to graduation and gainful transition to college or
employment. Their teachers implement a comprehensive and
integrated series of activities that address key transition points
from creating awareness and excitement to acquire math
and science skills during grades 5 - 12. M2SE helps students
understand that they have the ability to succeed. When
students succeed - we all benefit - our schools and our
communities.

MS stops people from moving and the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society exists to make sure that it doesn’t. The Ohio
Valley Chapter serves nearly 5,000 people living with multiple
sclerosis. In 2007, they did this through innovative and timely
program and service development. Relevant and strategic
program planning delivered nearly 40 programs for people
with MS and their families in the areas of education, physical
health, family support, recreation/social, accessibility and
employment. The establishment of a Care Management
Program, Bridges, assists people through the coordination
of social, economic and health-care resources to maintain
physical health, emotional well-being and independence.
The program temporarily bridges the gap for people with
multiple sclerosis when community resources fail to meet
needs by providing items such as emergency financial aid,
clothing, food and payment of expenses such as rent and
utilities.

The ProScan Pink Ribbon Center enhances the lives of women
by providing early detection screenings for low-income,
eligible uninsured women in Over-the-Rhine. Breast cancer
patients are offered support, access to treatment, and
comfort throughout their treatment and healing process.
The center is funded collaboratively by the Marvin Lewis
Community Fund, the Anthony Muñoz Foundation, and the
Cris Collinsworth ProScan Foundation. In 2007, the center
served 456 women.

In October of 2007, the Marvin Lewis Community Fund in
collaboration with Advertising Vehicles, Baker Concrete,
The Cincinnati Bengals, Cris Collinsworth Foundation, Kroger,
McCluskey Chevrolet, National City and Radio One met a real
need. Together they gave a boost to the Proscan Pink
Ribbon Centers’ efforts by helping break down another
barrier to women needing mammography service. Due to the
expense of traveling, and lack of awareness, many women
do not get mammograms. In order to change this, the Marvin
Lewis Community Fund spearheaded a collaborative effort to
provide two 15-passenger Pink Vans. The vans take qualified
women to and from mammograms and treatment if needed.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign that was launched
on October 9 is called “Cruisin’ for a Cure...Are you on Board?
The combination of the vans coupled with a strong radio
presence from Radio One has substantially made positive
measurable results as the center continues to grow.

readiness Success By 6 believes that children, schools and

Teens push the boundaries of their surroundings and some step
over the line. At Youth, Incorporated they meet children who,
despite their parents best efforts, have gotten in trouble with the
courts. In their residential homes, teens learn first hand about the
human side of their poor behavior. The struggles and stories are
as unique as each child. After they listen, they ask the children to
set goals to improve their situation. They hold them accountable
for how well they have done. At the same time the staff
members assess their academic, vocational and social needs
and offer them contacts in their community to help support them
when the teens return home. While in their care, community
service projects broaden their understanding of what it means to
be a contributor to society. Even with a short stay, at-risk youth
who are in a crisis listen, learn, and understand they have the
power to turn their lives around, one goal at a time.
