the Moselle
One of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe
Travelling to the Moselland promises exhilaration of many
kinds: On the one side, the best Riesling wines in the world
thrive here as well as other grape varieties such as the distinctive Elbling, which only grow in such a wonderful quality in
this region. On the other side, nature really shows off its variety
in the Moselle Valley with its spectacular loops. The Moselle
winds over 545 km - originating with much temperament in the
French Vosges - flowing through wild meanders through the
slate mountains of the Rhine, a true canyon with often steep
terraces, covered in either vineyards or forests. When the
“wine pope” Stewart Pigott described the landscape as one
of the most beautiful wine growing regions in the world, the
Moselle achieved royal status.
Its nobility is confirmed with a magnitude of castles and castle
ruins located along the river. Some fascinate with their full
splendour and glory, such as the Burg Eltz (Castle Eltz) or the
Reichsburg (Cochem Castle). Others, evoke romantic images,
like the picturesque ruins as the Burg Landshut (Landshut
Castle) high above the medieval half-timberes of BernkastelKues, or the Burg Metternich (Metternich Castle) which towers
above the alleys that look like perfect film settings, in the little
village Beilstein.
For these and a thousand more reasons, a holiday in the
Moselland is a memorable experience for anyone who wants
to indulge their senses far away from everyday life. The feast
for the eyes is complemented with seductive wines and the
exquisite regional cuisine. But also high calibre concerts such
as the Mosel Musik Festival or the countless wine festivals
offer a feast for the ears. Hiking and cycling trails, climbing
trails or water hiking trails ensure that sports enthusiasts are
also catered for everywhere in the Moselland. No matter what
guests want to experience on their holidays: The hospitality
and joie de vivre of the people of the Moselle is legendary!
A landscape for body and soul
So much so, that one of the most important German authors was
fascinated and shaped by these human encounters, already as an 11-year
old: Hanns-Josef Ortheil. A trip to the Moselle in 1963, on foot, together
with his father, from Koblenz to Trier, had a profound affect on his
personal and artistic development. In his book “Die Moselreise” (The
Moselle Trip), he describes how the people, and also the natural
landscape of the Moselle Valley, helped the shy boy in discovering the
balm for his soul. A quarter of a century later, Ortheil repeated the trip
and remains connected to the region to this day.
Inspiration for poets and detectives
A landscape as varied as the Moselle Valley naturally awakens the
creativity of artists and writers. The region is home to mysterious gorges,
winding lanes, rustic vaulted cellars, trendy pubs, unusual events and
also sun-drenched gardens: everything a perfect setting for a novel or
crime story needs. Authors such as Paul Grote, Mischa Martini or Ansgar
Sittmann have transformed the Moselland into an ideal landscape for
detectives. Chasing bad guys is fun here... of course only fictitiously and
on paper, because in real life the people at the Moselle treat guests and
each other with affection and friendliness.
Happiness needs deep roots
This strong link was also the motivation for Achim Reis to leave
behind the city life of Berlin and move to the Moselle to take
over his parents’ wine estate. In his book “Das Glück braucht
tiefe Wurzeln - Wie ich durch mein Weingut zum guten Leben
fand” (Happiness needs deep roots - How my wine estate
helped me find a good life), he impressively describes how he
experienced, while striving to create best quality wines, what
remains denied to so many of us in today’s working world: A
happy life through meaningful actions, quality and good work,
but also the passion for enjoyment and respect for nature –
embedded in a feeling of home, tradition and family.
„
It is a charming, yes, picturesque landscape; and
if I had an affinity for colours, paint brushes and
canvases, my motifs would be right on my doorstep.
As a painter of idyllic post card motifs, I wouldn’t
need to retouch anything. The mountains so green,
the water so clear, the sky so blue – what could one
possibly improve? It would just take one wanton
stroke of the brush, one unconventional distortion,
and the whole thing would have an edge in order
to escape the accusation of being kitsch. I could
also have sung verses about the falling light, the
silhouettes of the mountain ridges and the flow of
the river, if I were blessed with a poetic muse.
As it turned out, my family origins and fate
ensured that the valley I am from, did not hold
paintings or poems in store for me, but rather
something far simpler: grapes. However, in my
wines, I do recognise a reflection of the landscape
in which they are cultivated. I taste the light,
the soil and the wind. And for me, having left
the place of my birth as a young man, venturing
into the world and returning on my own accord,
today, they are the taste of home.
(Translated quote by Achim Reis)

Holidays for all tastes
The winemakers and hosts offer comfortable accommodation
of all kinds and for any budget ranging from luxury apartments or five-star holiday flats, comfortable guest rooms
to well equipped camper sites. Guests can choose whether
they would like to stay alone in tranquillity or prefer contact
to the hosting family, whether they would like to join a convivial round of wine tasting in the wine cellars or even in the
vineyards, or whether they prefer to discover wine gems in the
wine stores or wine taverns on their own.
Impressions that last a lifetime
Guests are always astounded about how much knowledge,
care, manual skills and last but not least, physical labour, it
takes before a Moselle wine, famous for its quality, is finally
poured into a glass. A Moselle holiday at a winemaker opens
one’s eyes when it comes to appreciating wine. Often, one
gains not only impressive knowledge about fine wine and
good food, which has a life-long impact on one’s lifestyle, but
also real friendships are formed with one’s personal favourite
winemaker.
Experiencing wine with all the senses
Guests can get closer to the secrets of wine in many different
ways. On wine estates with steep slopes, sports enthusiasts
can explore the “Wingert” as the wine estate is called in the
Moselle Franconian German dialect, via the climbing trail;
or those who prefer a little more comfort can travel with the
Monorakbahn (monorail track), which makes the winemaker’s
life a little easier at inclines of up to 60 percent. A comfortable
way to enjoy the vineyards is a ride on a covered wagon, best
in combination with a rustic wine tasting and snacks. Wine
cellar Open Days or the many delicious and celebratory farm
festivals are perfect opportunities for getting to know the wine
farms, for guests who have booked their accommodation elsewhere. It is also interesting to learn more about the different
methods of cultivation in cellar tours or on guided hikes
through the vineyards, for example when visiting wine estates
that are geared to ecology and hand-crafted wines.
Family-friendly for young and old
By the way: A holiday on a wine farm is not just great for couples
who want some enjoyable time-out. Or for friends and groups
seeking some relaxation and new experiences. Many wine
farms also cater for families with children. Thanks to the protected gardens or courtyards with playgrounds and lots of
nature, a wine farm is also a true paradise for children. Of
course they don’t get to try the wine, but grape juice is also
delicious, and healthy.
The “Certified Quality” logo
The most beautiful
side of country life
of the golden crown, which more and more
proprietors are coming to use, signals tested quality for
you. Operations carrying this seal of approval offer you
a very special stay full of ever new impressions. Experiencing wine is always the top priority here, supported
by unique regional features.
Watching other people work and being part of their everyday life can be
extremely exciting and fascinating: For example when holidaying on a wine
farm in the Moselland. If you are really keen about learning how the best
wines are created, visit one of the many hospitable wineries in the region to
find out first hand and customised to your requirements.

Moselle, with body and soul
The slogan of the umbrella brand Moselle does not promise too much. Hosts offering “Moselle,
with body and soul” are certified according to the strict criteria of the MOSELLE Wine Culture
Land. This means: Only selected and regularly trained hosts, culture and wine ambassadors,
winemakers, wine bars, bee-keepers or game meat producers may call themselves guardians
of the distinctive Moselle quality.
But what exactly makes Moselle quality so special? On the
one hand, the answer is simple: It’s a lifestyle which is all
about enjoyment. On the other hand, “body and soul” of the
Moselle is expressed in many different forms, which surprise
guests everywhere in all kinds of facets time and again.
Hospitality the Moselland way
For example, the hospitality which has been a tradition along
the Moselle for thousands of years. The encounters with the
Celtic tribes and Roman arrivals were not always and everywhere without conflict, after all, two proud cultures came face
to face. But a lesson was learned from history: Together, life is
better. Walking through a typical Moselle wine village, you will
find romantic wine estate courtyards everywhere, which are
open and warmly welcome all visitors, no matter which
language they speak or where they are from. Many hosts go to
extraordinary lengths and have a great flair for catering to
tourist requirements. They have learnt to view their offerings
from the guest’s perspective and to continually improve.
Eureka moments and Wow! effects
Part of cordial service orientation of certified Moselle hosts, is
to always offer guests exciting and unique leisure activities,
adding a certain “eureka” effect to each Moselle holiday: from
the carefree and informative wine tasting with picnic in the
vineyard, to the guided family hike discovering rare plants and
animals, which are at home in our Mediterranean climate.
More sporty guests are offered exciting tours on the climbing
trails through the steep slopes to experience the wine cultivation from a more adrenalin-packed side. Calmer natures can
trace thousands of years of history and legends, for example
in the Roman wine presses or in picturesque castles and
monasteries. Whatever you are interested in: Personal expert
guides are available on request or literature is provided. The
interiors of the certified holiday apartments and rooms are
fascinating; they highlight wine cultivation and the landscape
with carefully chosen and stylish details... Motifs which can
only be found in the Moselland, and nowhere else. Guests
love the combination of beauty and comfort these holiday
homes offer.
Love melts in your mouth
True natives of the Moselland spoil their visitors with delicious
treats. Many of the certified hosts will insist on serving homemade jams for breakfast or delicious lunch packets for hikes or
cycle tours or show off their cooking skills at rustic evening
barbecues in the garden: Obviously the way to anyone’s heart
is through the stomach at the Moselle, but with such a rich
culture of delights, it also melts on the tongue. Here, you don’t
just eat to satisfy your hunger, but to indulge. The typical
regional fresh delights might provide opulent taste sensations, but they are never tiring or too much of a good thing.
Choose the package “Moselle, with Life and
Soul” – Moselle holiday with “wow” effect
(page 19) and let our certified Moselle hosts
impress you with quality hospitality.

Wine culture
ambassadors
Some people have a great talent in warmly recommending their favourite landscape to others and spreading
enthusiasm. The highly trained cultural and wine ambassadors of the Moselland combine friendliness with
profound knowledge about the regional history, the cultural and nature highlights of the landscape, about the
distinctive traditions and all facets of wine growing. The
ambassadors invite visitors to learn more about all this
on special tours: for example, hiking or climbing the vineyards, cycling on the well-constructed vineyard
paths, guided tours of rustic wine cellars... They offer
well-versed wine connoisseurs new and exciting information, and fascinate others with a world previously
unknown to them.

is meanwhile subject to specific conditions. As a wine lover you
can therefore rest assured that a bottle with the golden crown is
typical for the region.

Best wines and best
dishes belong together
Top cuisine in the Moselle region
If you crave melt-in-your mouth cuisine on your getaway from everyday life, a gourmet trip
BECKER`S in Trier, Wolfgang Becker
(2 Michelin stars, 18 points from Gault Millau)
Schloss Monaise in Trier, Hubert Scheid
(15 points from Gault Millau)
Wein- und Tafelhaus in Trittenheim,
Alexander Oos

Waldhotel Sonnora in Dreis near Wittlich,

(3 Michelin stars and 19.5 points from Gault Millau)
into the Moselland is the perfect holiday for you. Not only is the landscape blessed by nature,
it is also closely located to French culinary art. The love of good food has never known borders:
The Moselland residents at the German banks of the river have always shared the culture of
indulgence with the residents on the Lorraine or Luxembourg side of the river.
Holiday destination for gourmets
Hardly any other holiday region in Germany boats as many
award-winning top restaurants as the Moselland. Michelin
stars, Gault-Millau chef hats, Schlemmeratlas spoons... all of
these are well represented in the region. However, quite a few
creative Moselle restaurants don’t seek the fame of the trade
magazines, but quietly impress their guests and live from word
of mouth recommendations by their thrilled patrons. It’s definitely worth to study the menus of restaurants which are not (yet)
listed as award winning establishments.
Fresh, delicious and “vun hei” (from here)
Other chefs again, have joined forces to create quality initiatives:
for example: “Regional Erste Wahl” (Regional First Choice) or
“Köche und Winzer der Terassenmosel” (Chefs and winemakers
of the terraced Moselle). Here, a guest seeking distinctive culinary
delights can be sure of being served typical fresh cuisine from
the Moselle region. Lovingly and carefully composed dishes
using naturally produced ingredients “vun hei” (from here), without
ready-made foods, but rather quality dishes freshly prepared
from starters to desserts: At the Moselle, culinary delights stand
for “class not mass”. And of course, all dishes are served with
fine wines, perfectly paired with the food.
Eating well takes time
As a gourmet exploring the cuisine and cellars of the Moselland,
you should take your time. A good meal should be enjoyed in a
friendly hospitable atmosphere without stress and anonymity.
But you should also remain curious: Many rustic Moselle
recipes are created in countless variations, for example, a rustic
vintner’s platter in a wine tavern can be served in many different
delicious versions. Whether carnal delights, vegetarian or
vegan fair, fish, sweet dishes or even unusual dishes inspired
by Roman recipes, only served in this region: The Moselle Valley
cuisine is particularly delicious.
Fine wines and good food – some things simply belong
together. Culinary treats await in the following gourmet
restaurants, all lauded by Michelin and Gault Millau
(as at October 2015):

Everything from the
Moselle: simply good
and delicious!
That the name Moselle is a guarantee for fine wines, is no secret
anywhere in the world. Especially the region‘s Riesling
regularly takes the top positions in international competitions.
Selected wines are combined under the seal of the Moselle
umbrella brand and prove that the slogan “Moselle, with body
and soul” has real content.
However, there are also other delicacies which met the high
calibre quality criteria and fall into the product range of the
umbrella brand. The famous and aromatic vineyard peaches
which thrive in the Mediterranean climate of the Moselland
are processed into liqueurs or jams.
In addition to the vineyards, in spring and summer, the abundance of nectar-giving plants transforms the rich landscape
with its glorious flowerage into a paradise for bees. Dedicated
and certified bee-keepers process this into delicious Mosel
honey: more than “just” sweet and delicious, but also healthy
and organically produced.
The delicate Moselle cuisine also likes it a little wild. That’s no
typo, but an expression for traditional game dishes prepared
from high quality meat from selected butchers. Because not
all butchers are qualified to perfectly prepare or cook the
regional game (wild animals). However, certified Mosel game
butchers can do this... and you can taste it!

information about the red Mosel vineyard
peach, Mosel honey, Mosel game as well
as the producers and their products.

“Der Beste Schoppen”
(The best glass of wine) tested quality in your glass
The idea was born at the Moselle in 1999 and quickly took
other wine growing regions by storm: Particularly high
quality premium wines served by the glass are awarded in
an annual competition. This way, exquisite wines can also
be experienced by the glass in restaurants.
The seal of quality guarantees the guest that his host of
chef is serving best quality Moselle wines by the glass.
This allows guests to try different wines without having
to order a bottle. Guesthouses and restaurants offering
premium wines by the glass for at least three consecutive
years, receive the special award “Haus der Besten
Schoppen” (House of best open wines).
A list of the current winning wines as well as the
“Houses of best open wines” can be viewed at
www.derbesteschoppen.de
Regional - first choice
Moselle and Saar
for gourmets
Wine festivals for epicureans
The winemakers of the Moselland cultivate such great wines,
there is always a reason to celebrate. And they do, extensively
and lively - not only in autumn to celebrate a successful wine
harvest, but all year round. Along the river, almost every town or
village organises a festival at least once a year celebrating wine
and offering lots of delicacies. Sometimes, more quietly and
cosy, sometimes with large events.
A major attraction and crowd-puller is the Saar Wine Festival in
Saarburg with a wine road, parade and fireworks. Other events
include, in Konz, the home-town and wine festival, in Trier, the
traditional Olewiger Wine Festival, in Kasel, the more laid back
Ruwer Wine Festival and in Schweich, “The Festival” of the
Roman Wine Route. One of the most spectacular festivals is held
at the beginning of September in Bernkastel-Kues: the Central
16
Moselle Wine Festival, with more than 200,000 visitors, a parade
and a sparkling firework display. The “Internationale Trachtentreffen” (International Folklore Festival) in Kröv shines with
groups from all around the world and a floating Moselle stage.
Alternatively, you can visit the Moselle Festival in Traben-Trarbach with its cultural and culinary attractions, the Wine Festival
“Zeller Schwarze Katz” with a parade and musical fireworks, the
Treis-Karden Wine Festival, the Home Town and Wine Festival in
Cochem with a spectacular fireworks display at the castle or the
Winninger Wine Makers Festival, the largest at the terraced
Moselle and the oldest in Germany.
For an overview of all wine festivals please visit
www.mosellandtouristik.de
Culinary and wine enjoyment are perfectly combined in these
creative top events: For example, the “Mythos Mosel” (Moselle,
the myth), is a memorable shuttle bus trip where renowned
traditional wine estates and creative Moselle newcomers showcase their best wines and finest dishes on the most beautiful
farms, against the backdrop of the enchanting natural landscape.
A highlight in August is the Saargau tasting trip “SaarRiesling
Sommer”, which is just as comfortable. The sun-drenched side
valley of the Moselle with its unspoilt idyllic nature, is a true
insider tip for wine connoisseurs and gourmets.
For more information about both events
please visit www.mythos-mosel.de
and www.saar-riesling-sommer.de
Gourmets not only love French inspired haute cuisine, but
also dishes which are fresh, authentic, creative and rich in
harmonious flavours. For experienced chefs in the Moselland it is quite clear: Regional is first choice. In 2011,
following this philosophy, an initiative was founded by
restaurants, which indulge their guests with special
campaigns, events and menus in true Moselland style.
Fresh ingredients from the Eifel and Hunsrück are also
served. The results are dishes that combine the demands
of haute cuisine with quality and taste experiences which
can only be found at the Moselle.

involved in Regional First Choice at www.bernkastel.de
Pure harmony: Chefs and winemakers at the terraced Moselle
A particularly attractive section of the Moselle Valley
stretches from Pünderich to Koblenz: the terraced Moselle
with its steep and steepest slopes. As any gourmet is
well aware, an exquisite wine must be accompanied by an
exquisite menu. For more than twenty years, six chefs and
eight winemakers at the terraced Moselle show their commitment to their landscape by thrilling their guests with an
extraordinary event programme at unusual venues, all year
round. Culinary and wine-making skills meet live music,
fantastical scenes from the world of legends, out of bounds
parties, visual arts... sensual pleasure has no boundaries here.

Moselle at www.koeche-und-winzer.de

Embark on an exciting journey
through time and experience the
world of the Romans... On a guided
city tour you will find out what makes
the oldest town in Germany so
special and unique. Together with
a centurion, you will discover the
“secret of the Porta Nigra” – and
this, not only as a passive observer.
You will visit the special exhibition
“NERO - Emperor, Artist and Tyrant”
and learn lots of interesting and
new facts about the colourful life
of one of the most famous Roman
emperors.
Wiltinger Scharzhofberger, Kanzemer
Altenberg, Ayler Kupp, Ockfener
Bockstein... these names make the
heart beat a little faster. This is where
the wines grow, world famous wines.
Views of the valley from dizzying
heights. Deep down, the sparkling
river Saar winds in the glow of the sun.
Feel the warmth of the sun trapped
in the slate stones. Magnificent
wine castles, wine maker villas and
manor houses line the way. Young
generations of wine makers, with
outstanding standards of quality
have ensured the renaissance of
the wines from the Saar region.
The wine village at the southern
Moselle is famous for its location
in the Dreiländereck (three-country
border), which is not only an ideal
location for excursions to Trier,
Luxembourg and France, but also
for varied hikes.
A 3-star comfort hotel with 33 rooms,
ideal for group or club outings, or
also for seniors (partly barrier-free),
awaits you in the small medieval
town of Saarburg with its impressive
waterfall.
Approaching Trier, one can already
see them from a distance: the
imposing mountains lining the
Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rivers
with their extensive vineyards and
breathtakingly steep slopes. The
mild climate and excellent soil are
just perfect for the world-famous
wines from Germany’s oldest city.
The Romans have left behind
impressive traces and were also
the first to recognize the climatic
advantages of this region and plant
the very first grapevines here.
An “Experience in live history” is
what you encounter during your stay
in the oldest city in Germany. Let the
turbulent history of Trier capture your
imagination, enjoy Roman specialities
and fathom the dark secret of the
Porta Nigra!
“Riesling – a joy for all the senses”
- is the motto of your three-day
sojourn at the Hotel-Weingut Weis
in the Ruwer valley.
Get to know the territory of the
Roman Wine Route between Kenn
and Trittenheim. Thanks to the easily
accessible location between Trier
and Bernkastel-Kues, the Roman
Wine Route is an ideal starting point
for exploring the region.

The Moselsteig trail:
Enjoy wine, culture
and the land step by step
If you would like to experience the Moselle Region with
its world-famous wines, excellent cuisine and multitude
of cultural highlights, then the Moselsteig trail opens up
a particularly intense world of experience, just right for you.
26
Since April 2014 this 365 km long unique quality hiking trail
with a total of 24 legs leads through one of the most beautiful
cultural landscapes in Germany - along the entire German side
of the Moselle River. The trail links fascinating wine cultivation and natural landscapes with a multitude of cultural highlights. A unique hiking experience, which deserved the titles
“Quality Hiking in Germany” and “Leading Quality Trail - Best of
Europe”.
The start and destination points of the Moselsteig trail are Perl
on the German-French-Luxembourg border and the mouth of
the Moselle River at the German Corner (Deutsches Eck) in
Koblenz. The different landscapes the hiker experiences are
not only of interest for wine enthusiasts: For example, the landscape between Perl and Trier is, at first, wide and open - often
offering a view as far as Luxembourg and France. Further down
the river, about from Trier onwards, Germany’s oldest city, the
landscape changes: Here, the world-famous meanders, steep
vineyards and picturesque villages such as Bernkastel-Kues,
Traben-Trarbach, Zell (Mosel) and Cochem, thrill visitors. In the
last section, just before the mouth of the river, the Moselle Valley
becomes more and more narrow with steep inclines in parts
and terraced slopes.

However, there is one thing that is omnipresent: The worldfamous Moselle wine and, in this context, the many places to
stop for refreshments and accommodation. Hospitality is an old
tradition along the Moselle, and hikers can look forward to a
wide range of restaurants, wine taverns, guest houses, hotels
and apartments as well as holiday flats. Businesses specially
certified by the German Hiking Association (Deutscher Wanderverband) as “Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland“ (Quality
Route Walkable Germany), have adapted their businesses to
meet the requirements of hikers. The entire Moselsteig trail is
not only a multi-layered hiking and cultural experience - it is
also flexible to meet different hiking experiences: A total of 24
legs - between 11 and 24 km in length - offers a lot of options
for individual desires and wishes. The paths lead through
forests, vineyards, along the banks of the Moselle as well as
along slope edges with magnificent views, and thrill with their
closeness to nature and rich cultural history.

And there is more: The Moselsteig trail is jokingly also open for
a “bit on the side” (Seitensprünge): Many circular hiking trails,
the so-called “Seitensprünge” are connected along the way and
offer hikers the option to explore the many facets of the region
away from the Moselsteig trail, in
half-day or day excursions. Of
course the Seitensprünge meet the
premium standards of the Moselsteig trail. The same applies to the
“Dream Paths” (Traumpfade) - as
the circular hiking trails along the terraced vineyards of the
Moselle between Burgen and Winningen are called.

Two-Wheeled Travel
Your options for actively discovering the Moselle region are many. Especially bicycles will
ensure a very intensive landscape experience while you discover something new behind every
river bend, be it one of the many castles, a Roman villa or wine-making facility, or simply just
a lively wine-growing village, all of which invite you to stop over or go sightseeing.
If you are interested in exploring a unique
variety of landscape and culture you’d be
well advised to take the Moselle cycling trail
that starts in France and follows the river for
almost 300 km, right up to Koblenz. This
cycling route is mostly asphalted, away from
the traffic and near the river banks, making
your discovery of the Moselle region‘s cultural
landscape an undiluted joy. The inclines are not that steep in
any direction – upstream or downstream – meaning that families
with children and hobby cyclists can also easily tackle the route.
The route goes past vineyards and gently sloping hills, with
numerous wine-growing estates inviting you to take a break.
“Straußwirtschaft” wine taverns and winery bars will surprise
you with culinary delicacies, with many a menu featuring local
specialities made from regional produce. The odd glass of
wine never goes amiss in the evenings.
Variety is ensured in the Moselle region by
over 1,000 km of signposted cycling route,
irrespective of whether you are planning
to explore the Eifel or Hunsrück mountain
ranges or other river valleys like that of the
Saar, Ruwer, Salm or Lieser, for example.
These diverting routes will inspire you. They are often installed
in former railway lines that have thus been rededicated to
ensuring comfortable and safe travel by the absence of car
traffic. Over twenty different bridge constructions on the
Ruwer-Hochwald cycle route or the viaducts and lit tunnels
along the Maare-Mosel cycling trail provide for excitement
and variety. If you get tired of cycling you can also rely on the
RegioRadler bus service, which can either bring you back to
where you started your tour or spare you steep inclines. The
local trains and passenger ships on the Moselle and Saar
rivers are just as well-prepared to carry bicycles.
28
Apart from the tour bike you are also travelling
with the mountain bike and would like to explore the countryside away from asphalted
roads? In some regions you will find thoroughly
sign-posted routes that will get you closer to
the landscape of the adjacent Eifel and Hunsrück highlands in a unique manner. Reach
their peaks through vineyards and forests
to reward yourself for the exhausting route with splendid
panoramic views. The guides for the many available tours
know all the most exciting climbs and raciest downhill routes.
They know trails that will provide just the right adrenaline
kicks for beginners as well as the more advanced, with
something for everyone.
After an excitement-filled day of cycling you will gladly spend
the night at a welcoming house. Many operations have adapted
to the growing number of cycling tourists and will not only
look after you, but also offer a sheltered space where you can
leave your bike. Many places also have tools for small repairs.
Especially the “Bett+Bike” operations are known for their
good cycle service. Your hosts will furthermore include many
vintners who will serve you with a good drop of wine for
relaxing with in the evening. But the most important thing is
that you are just as welcome for only one night. You can either
draw up your own travel itinerary or book a package tour,
which will often even include luggage transport, freeing you to
cycle from one place to the next
without worries.
See the “Radwandern im Moselland” cycling brochure for everything you need to know about
cycling in the region and bookable cycling arrangements, or go to
www.moselland-radtouren.de.

A selection of special Roman
attractions at the Moselle,
Saar and Ruwer:
Salve on the Straßen der Römer!
This is where your journey into ancient times and the heart of
Gaul as part of the Roman Empire starts. The powerful Roman
emperors ruled in Trier, the first wines were cultivated in the
Moselle Valley, and important trade routes ran over the Eifel
low mountain ranges, Hunsrück and Hochwald to the great
metropolises at the time. About 100 relics from this time are
still visible, bearing witness to the dense population and great
wealth, treasures and affluence and fine way of life of the
Romans. An archaeological park of special dimensions and
great diversity.
And today? The ruling emperors of Trier are long gone. However, the heart of Europe beats in Luxembourg. Here, at the
Moselle, the Schengen Agreement was signed, which abandoned the inner European borders and created a brand new
atmosphere in the border area.
The former stately buildings of the Roman emperor’s residence
attract a myriad of tourists, ever since it was declared a
UNESCO world heritage site. Moselle wines are regarded as
some of the finest wines in the world and, of course, taste
particularly good at their place of origin. The flat river valleys
of the Moselle, Saar, and Ruwer are ideal for pleasurable discovery bike tours and many premium and theme hiking trails
offer a relaxed exploration of the ancient cultural landscape.
In short: A holiday on the roads of the Romans involves
relaxing discovery tours in special natural areas, cross-border
cultural enjoyment as well as pleasurable enjoyment of the
best wines and an abundance of down-to-earth, but also fine
award-winning, cuisine. Be surprised ...

Mosel
Musikfestival
A wonderful landscape, excellent wines
and highly distinguished concerts at choice
locations – that is the triad you will be enjoying at the Moselle Music Festival.
Germany’s oldest festival of music invites you to classical
concerts performed at various different locations along the
Moselle River. The Moselle Music Festival is known for hosting
unique performers and musicians who breathe new life into this
venerable cultural landscape.
The festival started in 1985 with a small number of concerts
around the town of Bernkastel-Kues, but nowadays you can
choose from over 50 events. Although every year features
special highlights, the organizer takes care to include many
locations over and again, including the baroque hall of the
Machern convent, the Stuben monastery ruins near Neef, or the
Basilica of Constantine in Trier, where the opening concert often
takes place.
Especially the events combining musical with culinary pleasures
are an absolute highpoint; these concerts are quickly sold out.
Here you can enjoy the interplay between high-class wines,
gourmet cooking and music of the highest quality.
The landscape not only inspires the musicians, but the guests,
too, are always surprised by the special ambience. All the event
locations are of a manageable size and the setting is quite
intimate. This aspect is greatly prioritized because it allows
you as the guest to experience the artists first-hand. As is to be
expected of a summer festival, some of the events take place in
the open air, with alternative concert locations on hand in case
of adverse weather conditions.
The excellent mixture of different music genres is what makes
this series of concerts so unique. The festival provides spectacles
of sound every year, with old favourites and promising new
artists.
Bed & tickets
This combination promises a delight for all the senses.
What does it involve? A short holiday with a concert
visit as part of the Moselle Music Festival. Select your
personal favourites from the range of events and we
will find you the perfect bed to go with your ticket, with
some small events added if you would like… We look
forward to hearing from you.
The Moselle region also features a wealth of other cultural highlights throughout the year. Castles await your visit, and many
smaller and larger museums beckon if it rains. Good entertainment is ensured, regardless of whether you prefer celebrating
at a traditional costume festival, or with modern music.
Action, Geschichte und Abenteuer
erleben die Besucher bei einer der drei Erlebnisführungen in Trier. „Der Gladiator Valerius“,

Many other castles and ruins that are open to the public can
be found along the course of the river or in neighbouring
valleys. In many cases, these buildings were originally elevated
Roman fortifications that went on to be further developed
in the Middle Ages. Buildings from former ages are particularly
common at prominent points in the regions of the Middle
Moselle and the Terrace Moselle. Many of them were owned
by the archbishoprics of Cologne and Trier and were enlarged
and sumptuously furnished in accordance with their status.
While the strategic position mainly enabled effective defence
in the Middle Ages, it now offers excellent views of the valley
and the Eifel or Hunsrück mountain ranges. Many of the ruins
are steeped in ancient legend and tales of adventure, which
you can discover in their original setting. Numerous castle
festivals are held, bringing the buildings back to life and
34
giving you the chance to experience the day-to-day life of
times gone by. Mediaeval craftsmen, travelling entertainers
and musicians will take you back to former times and show off
their skills. Guided tours are offered, with activities for you and

Or simply enjoy the stunning view with a glass of Moselle
wine, as some castles have a wine tavern or inn for you to

grounds offer rooms or holiday apartments.
Other special highlights include special children’s tours of
particular buildings, with the chance to dress up as a damsel
or a knight (only for those who won’t be scared of the castle
ghost...). This gives the children something to enjoy and makes
their day unforgettable as well. You can enjoy special treats at

have paid your ‘passage toll’ (entrance fee). Most castle ruins
are open to the public and while exploring you can have fun
imagining what they might have looked like long ago. Some
castles are privately owned and are closed for the public.

Eltz Castle is a well-known landmark, whose image decorated
the 500 Deutsche Mark bank note for many years. Located just
a few kilometres from the Moselle near Moselkern, the castle
makes for a perfect day out. It was extensively renovated very
recently and has recaptured its former radiance. Thanks to its
isolated location, surrounded by the Elzbach river on three
sides, it was never conquered or destroyed by enemy troops
and it is still partially inhabited by the family of the Counts of
Eltz to this day. You can take part in a guided tour to immerse

THE CITY OF Trier
HOLIDAY region Ruwer
Koblenz
No other place north of the Alps has more ancient monuments to offer than
Germany’s oldest town. Porta Nigra, the imperial baths, the basilica, cathedral,
Roman bridge and amphitheatre are UNESCO World Heritage sites and illustrate
life in times past by way of exciting, adventure-oriented guided tours.
The university town at the same time features a very lively city all
Trier
around the central Hauptmarkt square with fashionable bars,
charming shops and trendy cultural offerings. Museums such as the
Rheinisches Landesmuseum meanwhile stage spectacular exhibitions.

find the perfect combination of epicurean pleasures, the enjoyment of Riesling
wine, and cycling or hiking through sunny vineyards and shady forests.

you are guaranteed to leave your everyday worries behind. This

Our hotel is located at the very heart of
one of the most popular river landscapes
in Europe right on the picturesque banks
of the Moselle. The establishment consists
of three buildings, linked by paths through
our gardens; the main house, the “Villa”
and the “Müllehaus”.
Our two beautiful villas were built at
the beginning of the 20th century. The
“Müllehaus”, built in the 16th century,
is steeped in an eventful history. In
Napoleonic times, the „Müllehaus“
itself served as a prison, and later became the village „pub“ or hostelry.
All the guest rooms (with exception of
the standard rooms), the restaurant, the
reception areas and the fireside lounge
were newly refurbished, decorated and
modernised to the highest standard in
2012/13. High-quality materials and

HOLIDAY REGION TRABEN-TRARBACH
Koblenz
The two districts of Traben and Trarbach are both girdled by forests and vineyards.
Always informed by wine cultivation and the associated trade, Traben-Trarbach
used to be regarded as the world’s most important wine trading centre after
Bordeaux at the end of the 19th and well into the 20th century, as its
magnificent art nouveau buildings demonstrate to this day. Guided

spa in Bad Wildstein pampers its visitors with warm thermal water

Terms and Conditions for All-Inclusive Offers from Mosellandtouristik GmbH
DEAR CUSTOMER,
We would ask you to read through the following
terms and conditions of travel carefully. These terms
and conditions of travel will become an integral
part of the travel contract which you enter into
with Mosellandtouristik GmbH, hereinafter known
as „MLT“, as tour operator, provided that they
have been incorporated with legal effect, and are
legally valid. These terms and conditions of travel
shall only apply for MLT all-inclusive offers. You
can book with the travel agency from which you
received this brochure; you can of course also
book directly with Mosellandtouristik GmbH. In
every case please use the registration form
attached. You will receive detailed information
about your holiday region together with your travel
documents. With the exception of bookings made
at short notice you will get the travel documents
required for your stay plus a folder with all the
important information, special tips on the journey
schedule about transfers and travel times, the
name of your travel, seminar and course manager
and your care staff 10 days before your journey
starts.
1. Conclusion of Contract
1.1. The following applies to all types of booking:
a) MLT’s proposal and the traveller’s booking are
based on the description of the package offered
and supplementary information contained in the
basis of the reservation insofar as available to the
traveller at the time of booking.
b) MLT points out that according to statutory
provisions (§ 312, section 2, figure 9 of the German
civil code), for package travel contracts, including
package travel contracts that were concluded by
means of distance selling (by phone, online, by fax
or email), no right of revocation exists, only the
traveller’s statutory right of rescission according
to § 651i German civil code applies. (See point 3.
of these Travel Conditions).
1.2. The following applies to verbal, telephone,
written, email and fax bookings:
a) By making the reservation, the customer is
bindingly offering the conclusion of the travel
agreement to MLT.
b) The contract comes into existence with the
receipt of the booking confirmation (declaration
of acceptance) provided by MLT. This confirmation
is not bound to any form, meaning that confirmations made verbally or by telephone are also legally
binding for the traveller. In the case of verbal or
telephone bookings, MLT will provide the traveller
with a written copy of the booking confirmation.
But a traveller’s verbal or telephone booking will
also lead to the binding conclusion of a contract,
given the corresponding, binding verbal or telephone
confirmation, if that traveller does not receive the
attendant written copy of the booking confirmation.
c) If MLT makes a specific proposal at the behest
of the customer, this constitutes a binding
contractual offer by MLT to the customer, in
deviation from above provisions. In this case the
contract comes into existence without requiring a
corresponding reconfirmation by MLT (which will
be provided as a rule, however) if the customer
accepts this offer within any time period possibly
stated therein without limitations, changes or
amendments by way of explicit declaration, down
payment, final payment, or by availing him- or herself of the travel services.
1.3. The following applies to the conclusion of
contract for online bookings (e-commerce contract):
a) By clicking the “Make payable reservation” button,
the customer is bindingly offering the conclusion
of the travel contract to MLT. The receipt of his or
her booking will be immediately confirmed to the
traveller by electronic means.
b) Sending the contractual offer by clicking the
“Make payable reservation” button does not establish any entitlement on the part of the traveller to
the conclusion of a travel contract in accordance
with his or her booking information. MLT is instead
at liberty to accept the traveller’s contractual offer
or not.
70
c) The contract comes into existence with the
traveller’s receipt of the booking confirmation
provided by MLT.
d) If the booking is confirmed by way of a corresponding on-screen presentation (booking in real
time) immediately after the traveller has made it
by clicking the “Make payable reservation” button,
the travel contract comes into existence with the
availability and display of this booking confirmation
to the traveller on screen and without requiring an
interim message regarding the receipt of his or
her booking. In this case the traveller is offered
the option or saving and printing out his or her
booking confirmation. The bindingness of the travel
contract does not depend on the traveller making
use of this option for saving or printing, however.
MLT will additionally provide the traveller with a
copy of the booking confirmation by email, email
attachment, mail or fax.
2. Down payment / Payment of remaining
balance
2.1. A down payment is to be made when the
contract is entered into, (Receipt of booking confirmation) and following the hand-over of an insurance
cover note in accordance with §651k of the (German) Civil Code [BGB]. This will be counted towards
the price of the trip. Unless an agreement is made
to the contrary in an individual case it will amount
to 10% of the trip price.
2.2. The remaining payment will become payable
3 weeks before the beginning of the trip provided
that the insurance cover note has been handed
over, unless another payment date has been agreed
in an individual case. The entire price will be payable
immediately for bookings made less than 3 weeks
before the beginning of the trip.
2.3. The obligation to hand over an insurance cover
note shall lapse a) if the trip does not last for more
than 24 hours, does not include an overnight stay
and the price of the trip does not exceed 75 € per
person per night. b) Notwithstanding Number 2.1.
and 2.2., if the agreed holidays do not include any
transportation from or to the destination and it is
agreed that entire cost of the travel only has to be
paid to MLT or to the business providing the
accommodation at the end of the trip/stay.
2.4. If MLT is prepared to render the contractual
service and is in a position to do so and if the tourist
fails to pay the down payment or the remaining
balance or fails to pay either of them in full at the
dates for payment agreed, without the tourist
being entitled to a contractual or statutory right
to do so, MLT shall, having sent out a written
payment reminder with a set period for payment,
consequently be entitled to with draw from the
contract and charge the tourist with withdrawal
costs in accordance with No 3. of these terms and
conditions.
3. Withdrawal by the customer, rebooking
3.1. The customer may withdraw from the trip at
any time until the trip begins. To avoid misunderstandings, it is recommended that withdrawal is
stated in writing. The date of withdrawal shall be
the date on which withdrawal is received by MLT.
3.2. In each case of withdrawal by the tourist,
MLT shall be entitled to compensation for the travel
arrangements made and the expenses it has incurred
as follows: whereby expenses normally saved and
the other use of cancelled places as normal must
be taken into consideration:
• up until the 31st day before the beginning
of the trip 10 %
• from the 30th to the 21st day before the
beginning of the trip 20 %
• from the 20th day to the 14th day before
the beginning of the trip 40 %
• from the 13th day to the 8th day before the
beginning of the trip 50 %
• from the 7th day to the day before the
beginning of the trip 80 %
• On the day on which the trip begins and in
the event that the tourist fails to appear
90 % of the cost of the trip
3.3 We urgently recommend taking out a travel
cancellation insurance as well as insurance which
covers repatriation costs in case of accidents or
illness.
3.4. The customer is at liberty to prove that the
costs incurred by MLT are less than those set
rates above or that MLT has not incurred any
costs. In this case the customer is only obliged to
pay the lower costs.
3.5. MLT reserves the right to demand a higher
concrete compensation instead of above all-inclusive
prices insofar as MLT demonstrates that the
expenditure incurred by MLT significantly exceeds
the respectuvely applicable all-inclusive price. In
asserting such a claim, MLT is obliged to definitively
quantify and substantiate the compensation demanded, taking possibly saved expenditures and
a possible other use of the travel services into
account.
3.6. The customer’s legal right to nominate a substitute participant as per (German) Civil Code
[BGB] section § 651b remains unaffected by above
provisions.
3.7. Should the customer wish to make modifications
with regard to the travelling date, accommodation,
catering or other services (rebookings) after conclusion of the contract, MLT can charge a rebooking
fee of €10 up to 31 days before the travel date
without this resulting in any legal claim on the
rebooking for the customer and as long as it is at
all possible. Later rebookings are only possible
through withdrawal from the travel contract and
new bookings according to the above cancellation
conditions. This does not apply to rebooking
requests that cause only minor additional costs.
4. The customer’s/traveller’s obligation to
report deficiencies during the journey; cancellation of the travel contract by the customer/ traveller; the customer’s obligations
for the time-sensitive enforcement of claims
4.1. The tourist is obliged to notify MLT or the
body stated in the travel information of any possible
defects there may be without delay and to insist
that the defect is rectified. The tourist’s rights
shall only be maintained in those cases in which
he fulfils his duty to notify the defect caused or if
he is not to blame for failing to notify the defect.
4.2. If the trip is adversely affected to a considerable
extent, or if the tourist cannot be expected to go
on the trip as a result of such a defect for a serious
reason recognised by MLT, the tourist may serve
notice of termination on the travel contract in
accordance with the statutory provisions (§ 651e
BGB). Notice of termination shall only be allowed
if MLT, or its appointed party have allowed a
reasonable period of time set by the tourist to
elapse without rectifying the defect. The tourist
will not have to set a period if it is impossible to
rectify the defect or if MLT or its appointed party
refuse to rectify the defect or if or if immediate
termination of the contract is justified by a specific
interest of the tourist.
4.3. The tourist shall have rights to make a claim
on account of the travel performances not being
rendered in accordance with the contract only after
the trip has ended but within one month of the
return date provided for in the contract. Such
claims must be asserted to MLT at the address
below. If the last day of the time period is a Sunday, an officially recognized public holiday or a
Saturday, the next working day will serve instead.
Notification of a claim granting a time limit cannot
be made to organisers, in particular to the business
providing accommodation. It is recommended as
a matter of urgency that a claim is asserted in writing.
A tourist’s claims can only avoid cancellation if
their timely assertion is neglected without any
fault of his or her own.
5. Special obligations of the traveller for
bicycle trips
5.1 It is the traveller’s responsibility to ensure traffic
safety, technical functioning and any other conditions related to carrying an own bicycle. In this
context, MLT is not subject to the obligation to
provide advice or inspection.
5.2 The customer has the duty to inspect his/ her
