Mayor: More
work to do
Announces
he’ll push
for 3rd term
Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s bid for a third term muddies the political futures of other mayoral hopefuls.

T
hat loud “poof!”
you heard Thursday
afternoon?
That was the air going
out of the political futures
of some of New York’s
most ambitious pols.
There was Christine
Quinn, the popular
speaker of the City
Council, suddenly facing
the prospect of another
four years — another four
years! — as City Council
speaker.
Well, OK, she decided
immediately.
There was Bill Thompson, the likeable city
comptroller. If he waits
five years and one month

to run for mayor, he’d be
60 years old.
How long can a
reasonably sane man
cool his heels as city
comptroller without going
totally nuts? Not that long,
Thompson concluded.
Anthony Weiner
doesn’t
have that
kind of
patience,
either.
He’s in
Congress
now. He
ran a credible, though
losing, primary race for
mayor three years ago.
Unlike the other two
elbowed Dems, Weiner
wouldn’t have to give up
his current seat to challenge Mike “Why Stop
Now” Bloomberg a year
from November.
But whoa! Weiner’s
road to City Hall just got
millions and millions and
millions of dollars steeper
Thursday. So, of course,
he wasn’t buying the
mayor’s soothing rationale
that in
giving
up term
limits,
voters will
simply
be getting
more
choices.
“Nobody that supports doing
this — this way — can
ever again say that they’re
for open government, that
they’re for reform and that
they’re for doing government the right way,”
Weiner shot back.
It’s true that if voters re-

sent the term-limit switcheroo, they can always
vote against Bloomberg.
But there aren’t many
independent observers of
New York politics betting
Bloomberg won’t pull this
off.
It wasn’t by accident
that Bloomberg chose this
week — with the nation’s
economy in uproar — to
announce that, on second
thought, he wouldn’t
mind staying around for
an extra four years.
His business sophistication, low-affect demeanor,
immense personal wealth
— they all give him huge
advantage in such a race
at such a time.
That race isn’t over yet.
Not even close.
But Thursday, it was
undeniably turned upside
down.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Thursday
that he’s pushing for changes that would allow him to
seek a third term, saying he
wants to handle unfinished
city business, including
the “unprecedented challenges” brought on by the
financial meltdown.
“Given the events of recent weeks and given the
enormous challenges we
face, I don’t want to walk
away from a city I feel I can
help lead through these
tough times,’’ Bloomberg
said. “My whole life has
prepared me for the challenges ahead, and I want to
give the voters a chance to
decide if they want me at
the helm.’’
Bloomberg, 66, confirming reports about his plan
earlier this week, said he
will ask the City Council
to change New York’s term
limits law so he can run for
another four years in office
next year.
The current law limits
the mayor to two terms.
Council Speaker Christine
Quinn said a bill to alter
the term limits law for city
officeholders would be
introduced Tuesday. The
measure would change the
limit from two consecutive
terms, or eight years, to a
maximum of three terms,
or 12 years.

after the attacks of Sept.

to a landslide in 2005 after

Bloomberg is almost
certain to face a legal challenge.
Several lawyers and
good government groups
said they are mulling
legal action to block any
changes without the approval of voters, who have
twice voted to support the

Bloomberg, who vetoed

NYers are moving careers overseas
Bad economy has many looking abroad
By Garett Sloane
[email protected]
With the shrinking job market, some New Yorkers are
moving abroad, where more jobs are available and cost
(RJ Mickelson/amNY)
of living can be lower.
Now that the streets of
New York — and America
— are no longer paved with
gold, it’s time to find the
next land of opportunity.
A number of New Yorkers are already packing it
in. Bankers are looking for
the new World Trade Centers of Shanghai and Sao
Paolo. And entrepreneurs
are finding second careers
in Dubai and Moscow.
“Just like you’d move
from Cleveland to New
York, there’s people now
that move from Cleveland
to Paris on a one-way ticket,” said Scott Sullivan of
GMAC, a global relocation
firm that helps employers
and workers transition to
jobs overseas.
Whether it be for temporary assignments or
permanent job changes,
the shrinking American job
market is making a move
abroad more enticing.
“Mexico is supposed to
be gearing up for a great
year right now,” said Annie
Levy Sandin of Emerging
Globe Group, a recruiting
firm.
International companies
will be looking to scoop up
top-tier candidates laid off
from Wall Street firms, she
said. And the interest goes
both ways, said Sandin,
who has seen 10 to 15 percent more resumes since
the banking crisis began.
Meanwhile, international assignments are increasingly used to train workers

Anthony Marshall, 84, is

The lawyer mentioned
the procedure after prosecutors asked for a postponement of Marshall’s trial on
larceny and other charges.
Manhattan Justice A. Kirke

trial, scheduled for Jan. 15.
Warner had opposed
a delay, saying it is “particularly important to Mr.

Optimism over the job
market abroad may fade as
the worldwide economy
sours. However, people
will still be able to find opportunities if they accept
compromises such as less
pay and permanent rather
than temporary assignments, experts said.
The good news, though,
is that Americans can often
take advantage of a cheaper
cost of living overseas. In
Prager’s case, his rent now
is about 60 percent of what
he paid in Park Slope.

The owners of the

announced a delay in the
completion of a multibillion-dollar transit hub
Thursday but pledged to

attacks.
They set no firm schedule for the completion

In a 70-page report on
Ground Zero’s tortuous rebuilding process, the Port
Authority said the elaborate rail hub will cost $3.2

than planned, and should
open in 2014, five years
after the original projected
completion date.

VEEP rivals rumble in their
High-stakes debate pits Biden against Palin
By Reid J. Epstein
Special to amNewYork
Thursday night was Republican vice presidential
candidate Sarah Palin’s
best chance to change the
perception that she can’t
handle herself on the national stage.
The only vice presidential debate will also serve
as a test for Democrat Joe
Biden and whether he can
avoid the misstatements
that have plagued his political career.
While the 90-minute
face= off in St. Louis will
be the last chance for both
candidates to cement an
image before a national audience, it is perhaps more
important for Palin, who
has seen her poll numbers
drop after shaky TV interviews with Charles Gibson
and Katie Couric.
Slipping in polls
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin arrives in St. Louis.

An Associated Press-Gfk
poll released Wednesday
found that just 25 percent
of likely voters believe
Palin has the right experience to be president. That’s
down from 41 percent in a
poll taken after the GOP
convention, when the
Alaska governor made her
well-received debut on the
national stage.
Because she has steadfastly avoided news conferences and not taken
questions except in controlled, one-on-one settings, the debate will be
her first live, unscripted
session since becoming
John McCain’s running
mate last month.
Campaign surrogates for
both McCain and Democratic candidate Barack
Obama have tried to raise
expectations for the opposition.
The Democratic National
Committee circulated news
stories describing Palin’s
widely praised performances in Alaska gubernatorial debates in 2006 in an
effort to dispel the notion
that Palin will be a subpar
debater.
And Palin herself this
week ceded the experience argument to Biden,
joking to an Ohio crowd
that, “I’ve been hearing
about his Senate speeches
since I was in, like, second
grade.”
Show of support
Former GOP presidential
candidate Fred Thompson
said Palin, who gave a stirring speech at the Republican convention last month,
would deliver a similar performance against Biden.

“People will have a
chance to see her from
beginning to end without
being edited,” Thomp-
son told CBS’ “The Early
Show” Thursday.
Earlier Thursday, McCain dismissed suggestions
that he was upset with his
campaign staff for holding
back Palin from extensive
questioning by reporters
and voters and not letting
her be herself on the campaign trail.
‘Gotcha’
Republicans have criticized the questions that
produced this impression
as “gotcha journalism.”
“We let Sarah be Sarah.
She’s smart, she’s tough,
she’s been in debates before,” McCain told “Fox
& Friends” on Fox News
Channel.
“The American people
... the more they see of her,
the more they love her, and
I’m confident of that at the
end.”

» Drew Swope, 23, Bed-Stuy: I would
like to see better distribution of health care
for the entire country. ... I agree more with
Barack Obama’s plan, as it’s not as privatized
as McCain’s is.
»
Debra Clawson, 42, Elmhurst: There
are a lot of kids and families that are going
without health care because they can’t afford
it. If they’re making minimum wage, they
can’t afford it. ... [The candidates] talk about
it, but I don’t think there’s a whole lot of
follow-through with it.
»
David Brown, 47: I think there should
be significant changes for poor people. ... I’m
supporting Senator Obama, mainly because
he seems to be more in touch with what’s
happening in the economy. … McCain seems
too far disattached.
»
Marsha Silverstri, 40s, N.J.: I’m definitely with Obama in this campaign. I don’t
agree with everything he says or does, but he
thinks that it’s important to have more of a
universal coverage for people. It’s possible; I
[just] don’t know how well it’s going to work.

Fans at home
Palin supporters began
gathering early Thursday
at the Mug-Shot Saloon in
her hometown of Wasilla,
where outside the bar
hung a banner that said
“Go Sarah! We love you.”
Inside the dark, somewhat cavernous bar, where
the odor of cigarette smoke
hangs heavy, customers
gathered around the bar
to watch the debate.
Among them was
52-year-old Sherry Johnson, who wore a sweat
shirt that said “Go Sarah”
in red lettering on the back
and “McCain/Palin” on
the front. Johnson said she
flew in from Skwentna, a
village of 85 people, for
the occasion so she could
be around her friends and
other Palin supporters.
Johnson lived in Wasilla
for 10 years and remembers Palin well when she
was mayor.
“I used to drive a cab,
and she was in my cab. I
knew who she was ... she’s
just a very nice lady. She
is very approachable.”
“She has done a lot of
really good stuff for this
state,” Johnson said.

Fossett’s airplane found in Calif.
By Tracie Cone
and Marcus Wohlsen
The Associated Press
More than a year after
millionaire adventurer
Steve Fossett vanished on
a solo flight over California’s rugged Sierra Nevada,
searchers found the wreckage of his plane, but no
body inside, and said his
remains were probably devoured by wild animals.
Search crews and cadaver dogs scoured the
steep terrain around the
spot Thursday in hopes of
finding at least some trace

of his body and solving the
mystery of his disappearance once and for all.
The mangled debris of
Fossett’s single-engine Bellanca was spotted from the
air late Wednesday near
Mammoth Lakes and was
identified by its tail number. Investigators said the
plane had slammed straight
into a mountainside.
“It was a hard-impact
crash, and he would’ve
died instantly,” said Jeff
Page, emergency management coordinator for Lyon
County, Nev.
National Transportation
Safety Board investigators
were sent to figure out
what caused the plane to go
down. Most of the fuselage
disintegrated on impact,
and the engine was found
several hundred feet away
at an elevation of 9,700
feet, authorities said.
“It will take weeks, perhaps months, to get a better understanding of what
happened,” said Mark
Rosenker, the NTSB’s acting chairman.
Searchers familiar with
the mountainous wilderness noted the many coyotes in the area.
Sen. John McCain did
an about-face Thursday
regarding the moderator of
last night’s vice presidential debate.
A day after he said he
was OK with PBS’s Gwen
Ifill moderating despite her
upcoming book that will
include a chapter about
his rival Barack Obama,
McCain said he wished
someone else was chosen
to play referee between
Sen. Joe Biden and Gov.
Sarah Palin.
“Frankly, I wish they
had picked a moderator
that isn’t writing a book
favorable to Barack Obama
— let’s face it,” McCain
said on “Fox & Friends”
Thursday. “But I have to
have confidence that Gwen
Ifill will handle this as the
professional journalist that
she is.”
On Wednesday, however, when conservatives
were up in arms after rightwing columnist Michele
Malkin’s piece on the book,
McCain seemed to have no
problem with her as moderator, telling Fox News
Ifill was “a professional
and I think she will do a
completely objective job.”
Ifill’s book, “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race
in the Age of Obama,” is
slated to be published on

Liberals and conservatives have been sparring
this week in the lead-up to
Thursday night’s face-off.
Many conservatives, like
Fox’s Sean Hannity, said
she should have been replaced, while liberals like
MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann
said the McCain camp approved Ifill for the debate,
and should have been
aware of the book, since
it was reported on in July
and is already available for

The folks behind the sixth annual
New York Underground Comedy
Festival have found that bigger is
not necessarily better. The world’s
largest comedy festival, beginning
Friday and running through Oct.
12 in various New York comedy
venues, is more about quality than
quantity this year.
“We’ve been getting bigger and
bigger every year,” said festival
producer Jim Mendrinos. “We
were doing 5,000 shows a festival
and no festival could touch that.
Now that we’ve done the bigger
thing, we decided to scale back
and become more industryand consumer-friendly. We’ve
become more selective in our
search for talent.”
Adam Ferrara
(“Rescue Me”),
Bonnie McFarlane (HBO’s “One
Night Stand”)
and Jim Norton (“Opie &
Anthony”)
are among
the established standups who will
perform at the
fest.
“We love having
those type of performers come
out, but it’s also about the
young talent that we want to
expose,” Mendrinos said. “We
would like to help them get to
the next level.”
Liz Miele is one of those
young comics who used the
festival as a springboard to the
next echelon. Miele, 23, scored
a Comedy Central special,
which aired in June, after performing at Mendrinos’ festival
last year.
“The festival definitely
helped me get somewhere
with Comedy Central,” Miele
says. “This festival has been
awesome and that’s why I’m back again.”
The charismatic Princeton native, who

the city, waxes about mental illness,
New York and dating. “I used to date
a guy with a lot of back hair,” Miele
says while calling from her Greenwich Village apartment. “Every time
I pet my cat I think about him.”
Miele, who is sassy and cerebral,
has been delivering standup for
seven years and has been part of the
festival since 2003. “I knew from an
early age that this is what I wanted
to do,” she said. “That’s why I’m
here.”
The same can be said for Mendrinos, who has been doing standup for
more than 20 years. The quick-witted
humorist, who wrote “The Idiot’s
Guide To Comedy,” will perform at
various venues throughout the festival. Mendrinos is slated to perform
at The Greek Gods of Comedy show
on Oct. 8, and at a number of other
festival events.
Will the lifelong Queens resident
and Mets fan crack wise at his team’s
unfortunate demise?
“No, this
is
comedy, not
tragedy,”
Mendrinos
cracks. “I
have a feeling a lot of
the comics
are going to
be talking
politics,
since that’s
—Jim Mendrinos,

festival producer
people’s
minds this
year. What bothers me is that neither
candidate is playing to win. They’re
playing not to lose.”
Mendrinos doesn’t want John
McCain or Barack Obama to win on
election night. “I would like to see
a statistical tie,” Mendrinos says.
“Make them play an extra game.”
That’s also what Mendrinos hoped
the Mets would do earlier in the
week. “I can’t control the Mets or the
election, but fortunately, I have some
say in the comedy festival.”
I have a
feeling a

QUOTE: ‘you are essentially just muzzling yourself.’
—Jessica Alba for Declare Yourself campaign, on those who don’t vote.
WEEKEND, October 3-5, 2008
Celebs get kitschy
to get you to vote
With the election just over a month away and the buzz with
voter registration deadlines rapidly approaching,
Hollywood has taken to several unconventional
(yet effective) methods for promoting political
awareness.
Actor and environmental activist Leonardo
DiCaprio put together a PSA that uses a reverse psychology
approach in encouraging Americans not to vote. The fiveminute video — which DiCaprio produced with pals Tobey
Maguire, Forrest Whitaker and will.i.am — was shot at
DiCaprio’s house in L.A. last week and features Ellen DeGeneres, Natalie Portman, Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston,
Dustin Hoffman, Benicio Del Toro, Eva Longoria, Halle
Berry, Jonah Hill, Sarah Silverman and
Jamie Foxx.
Silverman is also fronting The Great
Schlep, which is an initiative “to have
Jewish grandchildren visit their grandparents in Florida, educate them about Obama
and therefore swing the crucial Florida vote
in his favor.”
Jessica Alba has lent her lovely likeness to
the Declare Yourself campaign, which features
the actress in several provocative ads encouraging people to vote. In one ad, Alba is shown
wearing a Hannibal Lecter-like mask, hoping to
appeal to young voters. “If you don’t vote,” she
says, “you are essentially just muzzling yourAlba
self.”

Since its debut in early 2007, St.
Germain — a liqueur made from
rare wild elderflower blossoms
that grow in the foothills of the
Alps — has made a splash in the
spirits world. Mixologists praise
its delicate citrusy notes and easy
confluence with other spirits.
Fittingly, elderflower cocktails
have slowly blossomed at bars
around the city, and though the liqueur’s floral qualities are usually
associated with spring, its lesserknown medicinal properties make
it perfect for combating the fall flu
come cold season.

Greenwich Avenue
and Waverly Place
212-929-0898
Considering dessert guru Pichet
Ong’s pedigree, it’s no surprise
he would create a cocktail that
resembles liquid candy. In a riff
on the Bellini, Ong pours Italian
prosecco over syrupy elderflower
cordial and Lebanese rose candies
in a champagne flute misted with
edible 23-karat gold. “When you
take a sip, your lips get all glittery,
so it’s very sexy,” Ong says. The
cordial and candies rest unmixed
at the bottom, and the prosecco
bubbles distribute the sweetness
as they fizz to the top.

To satisfy Pegu Club’s weekend
patrons, who regularly request
lychee martinis despite their absence on the menu, head bartender
Kenta Goto created this delicate
cocktail that replicates the sweet,
floral flavor by using elderflower

liqueur. The result is a soft and
fizzy gin-based cocktail. The walkoff is citrusy and light, thanks to
freshly squeezed lemon and grapefruit juices, while orange bitters
keep things grounded. Floating
edible pansies make for an elegant
presentation.

This fragrant, fruity-floral cocktail
— made with pureed strawberry
and lychee, Stoli Blackberi and
St. Germain — might be designed
as an aperitif, but the thick texture
and robust flavor makes it seem
like a meal. The lychee provides
the drink with body, a gummy
texture and an earthy sweetness; the elderflower balances
the strawberry’s acidity for a
mellow taste resembling spiked
fruit punch. “It has a floral bouquet sensibility,” says Olana’s assistant general manager, Colleen
Hickey.
Dukes
and lemon are muddled together
for a subtle herbal taste and balance the sweeter, floral notes,
while vodka gives it kick.
The crisp, mellow mix is
served in a highball glass
and topped with a spritz of
club soda.
Juniper Breeze $13
Flatiron Lounge
37 West 19th St., between
Fifth and Sixth avenues
212-727-7741
Cocktail queen Julie Reiner created this light, refreshing punch
after sampling Plymouth Gin for
the first time. “I thought it was a
soft, feminine-style gin, and that it
would go well with the elderflower
cordial,” she says. Since the cordial boasts a more concentrated,
super-saturated floral taste than the
liqueur, Reiner balances its robust
sweetness with freshly squeezed
pink grapefruit and lime juices
for an acidic citrus tang, and
a splash of cranberry juice
for dryness. The popular
light- pink punch has
been a staple since its
debut on the opening menu in 2003
— long before “elderflower” became
part of the nightlife
vernacular.

When Jason Kosmas, the
bartender and co-owner of this
retro-classic speakeasy, created
the Yellow Jacket, his muse was
not delicate elderflower liqueur,
but rather Partida Reposado tequila. “I knew I could use the floral
aromas of the St. Germain to retain
the tequila’s integrity while also
giving it some sweetness,” Kosmas
says. A dash of orange bitters adds
depth and bridges these flavors
to round out this silky smooth
cocktail.

A quirky take
on the world
By Emily Hulme
[email protected]
The British artistic duo
Gilbert and George has
been performing together
as “Living Sculptures”
since 1967. Their unique
partnership has resulted in
work that’s as much about
themselves as the world
around them.
In its retrospective of the
pair, the Brooklyn Museum
has gathered more than 90
pictures, as well as video
and other items from past
Gilbert and George performance “sculptures”
— events in which they
would enact mundane
tasks, such as eating dinner (“The Meal,” 1969) or
drinking gin (“Gordon’s
Makes Us Very Drunk,”
1972), for an audience.
The duo’s suited figures
dominate nearly every
piece. Their appearance
as proper English gents
stands in stark contrast

visitors to the two essential
moments of the classic
character Babar’s creation:
to the provocative nature
of their subject matter,
whether challenging the

Through all of Gilbert
and George’s work, there’s
a feeling of playful engagement with the world, even
as it grows increasingly
dark.
One gets the idea that
these guys would be exceedingly fun to hang out

Michael
Cera
By Geoff Berkshire
Metromix.com
Last year’s sleeper hits
“Superbad” and “Juno”
instantly made Michael
Cera one of Hollywood’s
most promising
next-generation
comedians. Not
that the success has
gone to his head.
At the tender age
of 20, he’s one of
the least Hollywood
actors around: He’s
never in the tabloids,
only throws temper
tantrums if they’ve
been scripted and
took his parents as his date
to the premiere party for his
latest film, “Nick & Norah’s
Infinite Playlist.”
“Nick & Norah” is a
pretty simple love story
and you have great
chemistry with your costar Kat Dennings. Did
you do anything special
to create that?
We all hung out before
shooting, so we weren’t
kinda different, Because
they’re, like, extras and
they have to pretend to
like it (laughing). It’s
strange.
Nick makes mix CDs and
the movie has a pretty
fresh soundtrack. Did
you get to help pick any
of the music?
Actually, I wasn’t too
aware of most of them,
except for Bishop
Allen and Mark
Mothersbaugh.
I’m not too big of
an active music
listener.
Let’s talk about your
online shorts. Is there
anything different about
doing comedy for the
Internet?
I’ve never really done
anything that I thought
was gonna be just for
the Internet. There was a
video that my friend put
on YouTube that he and
I made for a live comedy
show that I was hosting.
The “Knocked Up” [fake]
audition was just for the
DVD. [The video woth]
Zach Galifianakis ... was
actually a pilot for this
sketch comedy show that
just didn’t get picked up.
But you play
the guitar in the
movie and you’re
also in a real-life
band called The
Long Goodbye.
No, it’s not really a
band. We just have this
MySpace page that we
put songs on occasionally.
We never played live or
anything.
So playing live with
Nick’s band, The JerkOffs, in the movie was
your first time rocking in
front of an audience?
I’ve done open mics
and stuff, but this was

Looking for Nirvana
By Ed Condran
Special to amNewYork
If David Byrne could be
any band, he would probably be Rusted Root.
“That sounds about
right,” guitarist Liz Berlin
says, chuckling.
It wouldn’t be surprising
if the world music-loving
former Talking Head is
enamored of the eclectic
Pittsburgh-based band’s
sonic palette, which includes Latin, African and
American music styles.
There are few other bands
that even remotely sound
like the funky, daring and
rhythm-centric sextet.
“We’re original,” Berlin
says. “We’re not following
what anyone else is doing.
We’re not concerned about
what other bands do. We
just do what we do.”
Rusted Root is currently
on tour previewing tracks
from its forthcoming disc
“Stereo Rodeo.” The album is full of rootsy, energetic tracks, according to
vocalist-guitarist Michael
Glabicki.
“That’s about all I can say
about it because it’s hard
to explain how it sounds,
but it is a bit different than
anything we have done,”
Glabicki says. “We’re going down slightly different avenues, which we’ve
Rusted Root, our home-grown world music stars, rock out on their new album.
hinted at in the past. It was
time to full-on explore that
territory.”
Expect denser backing
vocals and a more aggressive approach. Glabicki
reveals that the new
Rusted Roots songs will
utilize the loud/soft dynamic once used by such
iconic bands as the Pixies
and Nirvana.
Rusted Root is an accomplished live act that is
playful and unpredictable
onstage.
“It’s all about going out
and just trying to have as
good a time as possible,”
Glabicki says. “I have so
much passion for this
band.”

Sort of “How I Met

Elizabeth Reaser as
Bella, a young woman who learns from
a psychic that she’s

But here’s the catch:
She has to reconnect with him within

B’way’s ‘Seagull’ Q&A
not so soaring
Michael Weller’s twocharacter drama “Fifty
Words” explores the
downfall of a modern
marriage on the night the
couple’s son departs for
his first sleepover. We
spoke with Tony winner
Norbert Leo Butz, who appears alongside Elizabeth
Marvel in ths intimate OffBroadway production.
How would you
describe your
character?
He’s like a lot
of men. He can
be rather selfabsorbed.
He’s defined
himself through
his work. When
we meet him,
he’s a decent
guy who loves
his wife and
son.
But he can’t
deal with his
anger at some
of the curveballs life has
thrown.
What attracted you to
the play?
I thought it was an unapologetically honest depiction of marriage. You
have two characters that
have been partners for
a long time. And in the
course of an evening, you
come to see the depth of
their disillusionment.
What does the title
mean?
The female character
makes a speech and argues that the word love is
too small to encapsulate
the feelings that go into
loving someone for a
long time. And that there
should at least 50 words
to describe them all.

The Seagull

It must be nice to enter
Broadway with not only
star wattage, but love letters from the theater critics
too.
The Royal Court Theatre’s production of
Chekhov’s classic
“The Seagull,”
which
plays
Broadway for a
three-month run,

for her

Considered the

four masterpieces, the
1895 play focuses
on the artistic and

among a large ensemble of theatrical characters on

a famed writer and an experimental playwright.
We hate to rain on everyone’s parade, but we
didn’t find it to be so damn
extraordinary. We’re not
saying that Ian Rickson’s
production is bad — not
at all. It’s meticulously
staged and occasionally
gripping. And Christopher
Hampton’s new translation is colloquial and
comic while remaining
elegant.
But with the exceptions of Ms. Thomas
and the similarly eccentric and lively Zoe
Kazan as Masha, this
“Seagull” lacks theatricality and ensemble
chemistry. And more
often than not, it feels
dull, quiet and slow.
Most disappointing in the cast is Peter
Sarsgaard, who not only
displays no romantic
interest in Thomas
or Carey Mulligan
(Nina), but barely
even manages to
make eye contact
with them.
While
this
production is
better than both
of last year’s
Off-Broadway
productions, it
fails to live up
to Mike Nichols’
extraordinary

Instead, Broadway has received a
decent but highly
over-praised substitute.

Aliens with Extraordinary
Skills
Can love exist when one of the
parties is in desperate need of
a green card? That’s the big
question in Saviana Stanescu’s
whimsical romantic comedy
about illegal immigrants.
Nadia and Borat came to the U.S.
with visas that said they were
“aliens with extraordinary skills
in the circus.” The trouble is, the
visas aren’t real. So even though
they happen to work as clowns,
there isn’t any “Magic Circus”
that supposedly employs them.

Outspoken British
journalist Sidney Young
(Simon Pegg) lands a job
at a snazzy New York
magazine and, after calling out lots of pretentious
phonies, does whatever it
takes to climb the corporate ladder, sleep with a
gorgeous actress (Megan
Fox) and impress his
boss (Jeff Bridges) while
gradually developing
a friendship (or more?)
with a co-worker (Kirsten
Dunst).
The big question is:
Can this comedy, based
on Toby Young’s memoir
of the same name about
working at Vanity Fair
magazine, delve into the
flashy fun and integritycompromising traps of
hobnobbing with celebrities?
Yes, if you delight in
seeing someone as clueless about Hollywood as
Sidney’s dad, who thinks
Brad Pitt is a cave in Yorkshire. (Yeah, but let’s see
him avoid celebrity news
while living in America!)
Pegg excels at playing
the one guy in this fake
world willing to cry B.S.,
a brazenness that results
in some of the film’s biggest laughs.
But the movie presents
unethical journalism

considering that celebrity coverage could ever
be worthwhile. You

At first glance, “Nick &
Norah’s Infinite Playlist”
may seem best suited for
the tween set. But thanks to
a discriminating soundtrack
and mature performances
from Michael Cera and Kat
Dennings, this is a movie
if not for all ages, then at
least for anyone who enjoys
seeing a couple of amiable
hipsters-in-the-making fall
in love.
What’s nice about “Nick
& Norah” is its aspiration
to convey something real.
There is true heart ensconced in this otherwise
broad comedy. Nick (Cera),
a high school senior, has just
been dumped by his girlfriend, Tris (Alexis Dziena),
a pretty shallow little thing
who a guy like Nick considers a major coup of
girlfriends.
“Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist” features Kat Dennings and Michael Cera as budding
lovebirds who spend a night discovering NYC together.
Wallowing over his loss,
Nick gets dragged from New
Jersey to the Lower East
Side, where he performs
with his band at Arlene’s
Grocery. It’s there that he
meets Norah (Dennings),
who’s witty and easygoing
around friends but
self-deprecating and
shy when it comes to
romance. She’s the
kind of girl who’s
so cool, you want
to snuff every insecurity that comes
out of her
mouth.

Anne Hathaway
By Mina Hochberg
amNewYork movie critic
For most of her career,
Anne Hathaway has used
her demonstrative facial
features to express grace and
good will. In “Rachel Getting
Married,” though, Hathaway
proves that her face can also
play petty and scarred.
Hathaway stars as Kym,
a family black sheep who
leaves rehab for the weekend to attend the wedding
of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt). As you can
imagine, diving into a house
brimming with family and
friends can be a shock to
someone who’s been in rehab for nine months.
From the second Kym’s
father (Bill Irwin) picks her
up, Kym is nervous, defensive and accusatory. She
also has a knack for giving
speeches that turn joyous
moments into vortexes of
despair. As a result, her
relationship with her sister
teeters on the brink of hatred
as the film moves along.
The wedding is a curious
hodge-podge of traditions.
The bridal party wears saris,
the reception features exotic
dancers and the rehearsal
dinner is accompanied by
a talent show. Understandably, some viewers may
yawn at the extensive wedding scenes. But director
Jonathan Demme’s attentiveness to the joy of a wedding is an essential contrast
to Kym’s universe of woes.
The film doesn’t break
any molds, but it elegantly
taps into raw emotion without feeling contrived.
depend on how far you’re
willing to buy into this upbeat rendering of New York.
On the one hand, there’s a
doggedly sunny and exuberant atmosphere that belies
the city’s grit. On the other
hand, the film captures just
how lovely and intimate
Manhattan can feel at the
height of a fun night out.
“Nick & Norah” is a convivial love story with a pair
of incredibly likable lead
actors. Having said that, as
much as you want to revel
in Cera’s brilliant deadpan
delivery and Denning’s
down-to-earth charm,
there’s a frustrating layer of
broad comedy that keeps

In the apocalyptic drama
“Blindness,” the plague
starts with one man who’s
driving through traffic in
a busy, thriving Anycity.
His vision suddenly goes
white; his doctor (Mark
Ruffalo) can’t detect the
cause. But the next morning, the doctor is stricken,
and the “white sickness”
quickly spreads through
the populace, bringing
civilization to a grinding
halt.
The doctor’s wife (Julianne Moore) remains
mysteriously unaffected,
but feigns blindness to stay
near her husband. They and
dozens of others — who,
like all characters here,
have no names — are quarantined in an abandoned
hospital that soon becomes
a festering Petri dish of society. When supplies from
the outside dwindle, the
first casualties are decency
and dignity.
Based on the novel by the
Nobel-winning Portuguese
author José Saramago,
“Blindness” is a face-first
dive into the horror of
human nature — call it
“Lord of the Blind Flies”
— with several memorably
harrowing scenes and a
compelling cast that includes Alice Braga, Gael
García Bernal and Danny
Glover.
But Brazilian director
Fernando Meirelles, whose
film “City of God” (2002)
was so wild and vibrant,
strikes the same gloomy
tone as in his 2005 drama,
“The Constant Gardener,”
a constant reminder (as
if one were needed) that
this is heavy stuff. It’s an
unforgettable experience,
though not as illuminating
as it could be.

If you’re looking for a nuanced exploration of class,
race and immigration,
“Beverly Hills Chihuahua”
is not the movie for you. If,
however, you’d like to see
these issues touched on in
a blithely entertaining way
by a cast of talking dogs,
Papi the chihuhuahua,

this is just the ticket.
A surprise charmer, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” tells
the story of Chloe (voiced
by Drew Barrymore), the
surrogate child of a cosmet-
ics maven named Vivian
(Jamie Lee Curtis). While
housesitting for Vivian, the
irresponsible Rachel (Piper
Perabo) takes Chloe on a
trip to Mexico, where she’s
promptly dognapped.
As Rachel searches for
the dog, she’s joined by Vivian’s Mexican landscaper,
Sam (Manolo Cardona)
and his chihuahua, Papi
(George Lopez). Papi is
madly in love with Chloe,
despite her white-girl airs.
It’s no spoiler to say Chloe
goes home with a ethnic
pride. The fun is in the
journey, which teaches the
Chloe to “find your bark.”

This is another brutal and fitfully
hilarious farce from the Coen

nihilism sometimes cancels out
the comedy.

Romantic comedies don’t always
have the strongest concepts, but
“Everybody Wants to Be Italian”
begins with what barely qualifies
as an idea. Jake meets pretty
Marisa. The catch: Each thinks
the other is Italian, but neither
actually is. Can you see the
possibilities for hilarity?(Newsday)
Ghost Town
***1⁄2
After a near-death experience,
a misanthropic dentist acquires
the ability to see dead spirits,
each of whom has a favor to ask.
The always amusing, occasionally hilarious comedy proves that
Ricky Gervais is to comedy what
the dry martini is to alcoholism.

The House Bunny
**1⁄2 Silly? Impossible? Of course.
This is a “Happy Madison” film,
after all, though it is refreshing to
see Adam Sandler’s production
company come up with a femalecentric comedy for once.

all disbelief and wear earplugs,
“Eagle Eye” is a sufficient
if ridiculous thriller about
two strangers, Jerry (Shia

to become co-fugitives when
they start receiving cell phone
instructions from an anonymous
woman. (amNY)

Miracle at St. Anna
***
On Aug. 12, 1944, a Nazi battalion
in the Tuscan village of Sant’Anna
di Stazzema gunned down 560
men, women and children, a
massacre that is re-enacted,
along with a seemingly divine
event, in “Miracle at St. Anna.”
The movie is an uneven blend of
(Newsday)
realism and fantasy.
My Best Friend’s Girl
*1⁄2 A professional cad who gets
paid to mistreat women
unexpectedly falls in love in
this typically clunky and vulgar
romantic comedy.
(Newsday)
Righteous Kill
**
“Righteous Kill” was helmed
by Jon Avnet with the sort
of phony, frantic energy that
suggests a director with
little faith in his material.
(McClatchy)
Nights in Rodanthe
** The last time we saw Richard
Gere and Diane Lane, in 2002’s
“Unfaithful,” they were running
off together after covering up
Gere’s murder of Lane’s Parisian
lover. Ah, those were the good
old days.
(AP)
Tropic Thunder
***1⁄2
Gory, vulgar and wickedly funny,
this film from Ben Stiller is easily
the summer’s best comedy.
(Newsday)
Pineapple Express
**
It may seem ridiculous to expect
much from a movie about two
stoners on the run, but the slick,
funny trailers certainly gave
reason to hope — especially
with a cast that includes Seth
Rogen and James Franco, former
cohorts from the excellent
“Freaks and Geeks.”
(amNY)
Religulous
**1⁄2
Comedian Bill Maher travels the
globe making fun of religion in
this potentially gutsy satire that
chickens out with cheap shots
and vulgar humor.
(Newsday)
Traitor
**
Predictable, with a formulaic
script, “ Traitor” certainly doesn’t
break any molds. But it
maintains a minimum of intrigue
and good acting, coupled with
a satisfying twist at the end to
save it from the doldrums.(amNY)
Towelhead
***
More than a bit scattered, but
still uncommonly complex and
compelling.
(Newsday)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona** 1⁄2
Between “Match Point”
and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” Woody Allen has yet to
compellingly explore the more
Bohemian aspects of love.(amNY)
The Women
**
An ensemble this good (Meg
Ryan, Debra Messing, Annette
Benning) guarantees lively moments, but the film’s outdated
message seems more empowering for men.

Letters
Term limits: Be careful
what you wish for
New Yorkers need to keep in mind that if term
limits are overturned, and Bloomberg is allowed to run for another term, so will everyone.
Gregory B. Holman, Manhattan
Mike would leave strong
legacy if he didn’t run again
In September 2001, Mayor Giuliani was reportedly seeking a third term in those “troubled”
times [after the 9/11 attacks]. Newspapers
reported that even though petitions were sent
around, Giuliani initially dismissed the idea
and later started to entertain the notion by saying the topic should be “discussed.” In 2008,
Mayor Bloomberg once called the notion “disgusting” and now, apparently from his aides, he
doesn’t feel that way anymore. The term limits
are set in place and elected officials should
respect the law. I want Bloomberg to go down
in history with a good legacy of eight years, not
a tainted legacy of a law-changing 12 years.
Gregory Durant, Astoria
Looking to past politics
doesn’t always work
Re Hugo Dwyer’s letter, “We Need to Hear it
from Economists,” and Jamie Bryan’s letter,
“Thomas Jefferson Said it Best,” Oct. 2: Dwyer
makes a great point about the oppressiveness
of branding the people with “cowboy economics,” yet, unfortunately, the reason why a fiscal
democracy couldn’t healthily secure “property”
per the “Jeffersonian” ideals noted by letter
writer Bryan is that, in the agrarian paradigm of
an early American South, “property” was not
limited to real estate. Yes, owning property rendered you an American, but since slaves were
forbidden to own land, they too were considered “property” — an abhorrent evil eventually
quashed by northern banks.
Chris Morris, Manhattan

Missing: 5,000 condoms, sound equipment and a motor used to
inflate a giant prophylactic, all stolen from a “condom-mobile”
used to promote HIV/AIDS awareness. The coordinator of an HIV/
AIDS awareness tour, Polo Gomez, said the truck was taken Sunday from its parking spot in front of a friend’s house in Mexico
City. It was recovered Wednesday in a shopping mall parking lot in
a northern suburb — minus the condoms and equipment. Gomez
said the thieves left some 800 HIV tests and a 23-foot inflatable
prophylactic, which were also in the vehicle. The truck wasn’t hard
to locate. It features painted images of a peeled banana, the exposed part shaped like a condom, and a shirtless man saying: “I
protect myself. Do you?” After the theft received media coverage,
residents phoned police with the vehicle’s whereabouts.

Today’s birthdays
That’s weird!
Edited by Wayne Robert Williams
08
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Travel now is complicated, but
should turn out well. Allow extra time
to reach your destination. Hide a few
extra bucks in your shoe.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
It’s easier to get information
now, through your investigations.
You’d rather just ask somebody who
knows, and that’s certainly an option.
06
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
There’s so much work, you
wonder how you’ll ever get it all done.
Do what you can. Pay off a few bills.
Take it one step at a time. You can
relax later.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
You could get a very nice bonus
or tip of the financial kind. Or maybe
you’ll find $20 in an old shirt pocket.
Looks like you’re in for a nice surprise
involving money.
08
Gemini (May 21-June 21)
Your partner and/or mate is the
one who’ll come up with the next
good idea. Don’t argue so much that
you miss it. Be watching for it instead.
And give credit where credit’s due.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
OK, now you can move boldly
forward. Hopefully, you have a plan.
But even if you don’t, your chances of
success are better now. Proceed with
confidence.
Cancer (June 22-July 22)
A private conversation helps
you reorganize priorities. Get back to
work on a different project.
Something else is more urgent now.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You get some of your best
information from behind the scenes.
Start asking your better informants
leading questions. You’ll get more
gossip than you know what to do with.

Put your plans into action. There’ll be
a couple of minor setbacks, but
everything turns out well.
08
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Resolve domestic issues,
physical and mental. A family meeting
will put all sorts of odds and ends to
rest. It’s easier now to fix things that
are broken and throw away useless
stuff you have hanging around.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Many job-related difficulties
clear up pretty soon. You and your

you want things to turn out.
07
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
They want you to take on more
responsibility, but they don’t want to
pay you any more than you’re already
making. Is this a good deal? Maybe
so, but don’t go into it unaware.

METS UNDER OMAR
Omar Minaya became the
Mets’ GM after the 2004
season. Here are the team’s
results since then.
n 2005: Missed playoffs with 83-79 record.
n 2006: Won NL East
division with 97-65 record.
Swept L.A. Dodgers in
NLDS, then lost to St. Louis

The Associated Press
Omar Minaya is staying
as general manager of the
Mets. Jerry Manuel is likely
to remain as manager.
Players, however, could
be on the move.
Following the Mets’
second straight September
collapse, fans are angry
with the team, the front office and the players.
“They all work hard.
They all prepare. They all
care. All those ingredients
are there. So what is it that
we lack? What is it that
we need to get across that
finish line?” Minaya said
Thursday when his new
contract was announced.
“When we bring in personnel into New York, into this
environment, are they able
to handle the pressures that
go with it? Those things do
have to be considered.”
Minaya became general

manager in 2004 and was
signed to a five-year deal
worth $4 million. He is
now signed through 2012
for roughly $1.5 million
per season, with the Mets
holding club options for
2013 and 2014.
“We felt he’s the right
person to lead our baseball operations today and
through the extension
period here,” chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon
said. “You know, listen,
we failed this year and we
want to get the redemption
that we need and move
forward, and we thought
Omar and his staff was the
best group to put us in that
position. We obviously
were not a very good team
when Omar came aboard,
and he’s turned this thing
around, and we think he
deserves another chance
to keep getting us to where
(Getty)
we want to be.”
The Mets reached Game
7 of the NL championship
series in 2006. The next
two years they missed out
on the playoffs on the last
day of the regular season.
Credited with adding
big-money stars Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran and
Johan Santana, Minaya also
has been criticized for signing old and injury-prone
players such as Moises
Alou, Orlando Hernandez
and Luis Castillo.
Minaya is sure to ask
ownership to open the
checkbook again this offseason, whether it’s for
Francisco Rodriguez, CC
Sabathia or even Manny
Ramirez. Wilpon said
Thursday that this year’s
payroll stood at $143 million, but he would not be
reluctant to spend again if
Minaya’s blueprint called
for a big-money free agent.
Minaya said he is actively trying to sign Manuel,
who took over on an interim basis when manager
Willie Randolph was fired

No Plax, no prob?
Domenik Hixon, Steve
Smith and Sinorice Moss
don’t see the suspension
of leading receiver Plaxico
Burress as a problem for
the Giants.
It’s just a chance for
them to step up and show
their stuff.
“I believe this is a great
opportunity for our young
guys,” said Super Bowl
hero David Tyree, who
is still working his way
back from offseason knee
surgery. “What we lose in
Plax is a completely dominant receiver. But I think
Domenik Hixon is going
to surprise a lot of people,
and we know we have capable guys from one to five
that we know they can go
in there and we won't lose
a beat.”
Hixon, who was the

team meeting the day after
an overtime win over the
Cincinnati Bengals.
Since the Giants (3-0)
had a bye last week, Burress will sit out Sunday’s
game against the Seattle
Seahawks at Giants Stadium (1 p.m. on FOX).
The absence will allow
the Seahawks to focus their
coverage on veteran Amani
Toomer, who is second on
the team with 13 catches
for 143 yards and a touchdown. Hixon will get the
first start of his three-year
career. He has six catches
for 89 yards this season.
Smith will become the
third receiver. He has become one of Eli Manning’s
favorite targets with 11
catches for 94 yards, with
most coming in four-wide
receiver formations on
third down. Moss, who has
had one catch for 23 yards,
will be the No. 4 wideout.
“That is our strong point
this season — a lot of different weapons at the receiver
position, using a lot of guys
and getting receptions,”
Manning said of his options on Wednesday. (AP)

WEEKEND, October 3-5, 2008
Predicting Week 5
A promising offensive
matchup goes awry when
Cowboys receiver Terrell
Owens runs onto the
Texas Stadium turf and
tackles the Bengals’ Chad
Ocho Cinco, scuttling a
breakaway touchdown but
injuring T.O.’s ego, which
he intended to protect.
A
llow me to share
some predictions
for the fifth week
of the NFL’s 2008 season.
Seattle at Giants
Indianapolis at Houston
The Colts finally romp
to a convincing win, but
they later apologize for
spoiling the 100th game in
Texans franchise history.
Years later, the Colts will
take their apology back.
Kansas City at Carolina

yards to surpass Shannon
Sharpe for most career
yards receiving by a tight

The Giants beat the
Seahawks, achieving
their first 4-0 start since
1990 by employing a
taxonomist to prove that
the “seahawk” is not a
a species so much as a
colloquial reference to the
North American osprey —
whereas giants really do
roam the earth (in packs).

Tony Gonzalez makes

gains negative-10,060
yards and has his existence legally annulled.
Washington at Philly
The Redskins’ offense
preserves its turnover-free
start, depriving fans of the
exciting interceptions and
fumbles they crave.
Tampa Bay at Denver
Coach Mike Shanahan
rides the Broncos’ No. 1
offense to his 150th career
victory. He then rides a
bucking bronco and falls
off for the 150th time.
Pittsburgh at Jacksonville
Filling in for his injured
betters, third-string
Steelers running back
Mewelde Moore is
pleased to gain 18 yards
in 10 carries to lead the
most boring offense ever.
