Tropez
The Musee de L’Annonciade, then
follows the Matisse show with a stunning
exhibition devoted to Henri Manguin - a
lesser known Impressionist painter - and
his paintings of Mediterranean scenes.
This Exhibition presents some of
Manguins paintings from, his youth, and
only those painted in this region. His
paintings and watercolours display his
incredible joie de vivre on finding himself
in the Mediterranean, optimism, and a
certain innocence, and like many other
Fauvists of the times, the search for an
elusive “Ärcadia”.
He first came to St. Tropez in 1904
staying at Villa Ramade, much associated
with Paul Signac (the Annonciade has
several lovely works of Signac on
permanent display).
Collectors and agents Leo Stein and
Vollard started buyinghis work.
Most the works on show dated from this
early period around 1905 and feature St.
Tropez, Cavaliere and one of Cassis.
From now on sees the start of
numerous Art exhibitions all round the
Var in a number of wine domaines. You
just have to look up the website to find
out what is on where in your locality and
elsewhere, perhaps providing you with a
reason for tripping around and trying
other wines.
