September - Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Hawaii
Connecting people to Jesus Vol. 14, No. 9 September 2013 The Good News Newsletter of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Schools Honolulu, Hawaii Thoughts and Ponderings from Pastor… The other day someone sent me a link to a site from The American Film Institute: they had a list of the top 100 greatest movie songs of all time. Since this person knew I love movies (Donna and I even have a weekly dinner and a movie night!) -- I was intrigued. But before going to the site I tried to come up with what I thought the #1 song would be -- and guess what? I was right -yea me! Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz (not the Bruddah Iz version!) was honored as the greatest movie song of all time. By the way, As Time Goes By was #2! And thinking about those two songs, it occurred to me, in an odd kind of way, that they really go together. As Time Goes By talks about life in the “real world”, in the realm of time. In world of time, we find the joy of love -- but often there also is struggle and pain: Continued on page 2 Worship, Bible Class and Fellowship at Our Redeemer Divine Worship (Communion): Sunday, 9 am Fellowship Time: Sunday, 10:15 am Bible Study / Sunday School: Sunday, 10:45 am Wednesday Bible Class: 10 am, Aloha Room Fellowship Breakfast: Sat., 8 am, Zippy’s Kahala Young Ladies Bible Study, alternate Fridays The Good News is also available online at www.orlc-hawaii.org. But Over the Rainbow longs for a place beyond time, beyond this “real world”, a place of joy and perfection, where all is beautiful and the bluebirds never stop singing. And you put these two songs together, you pretty much have the human condition: we live in a world where we experience many joys as time goes by; and yet in the end those joys don’t fully satisfy us, and we long for something else, something Over the Rainbow. We long for a place where there is no sadness, where time does not like an ever-rolling stream bear all its sons away, where there is no sickness and no grief and no loss. This longing for a ‘perfect place’ shows itself in many ways. In fiction and film, we see places like Shangri La, Bali Hai, or the alien planet in “Cocoon”. All these ’spots’ are places where sadness drops away and all is beauty. All over the news, on FaceBook and in magazines we constantly see lists showing The Ten Best Places to Live in America. Many of us look longingly at such lists and dream of a place where life will be better. Oddly enough, we do live in ‘the best place to live’ on this side of glory! Someone once called this gnawing desire for a better place “the nostalgia for paradise”. And that’s exactly what it is -deep within our DNA we remember that there was a perfect place once, where our ancestors Adam and Eve lived -- and we long to return there. But since that paradise is always just out of reach, it seems that we are doomed to endless frustration. But Jesus came to lift that frustration from us: He makes it possible for us to go Over the Rainbow and find that place where The Good News is also available online at www.orlc-hawaii.org. all tears are wiped away, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain (Revelation 21:4). He did this by coming into our world, where time goes by, and by dying for our sins -- the sins that separated us from Eden in the very first place! With Jesus, we can indeed go over the rainbow into that realm of perfection and beauty. And it doesn’t just happen after we die -- for even in this life -if we belong to Jesus, we are touched by the beauty and the perfection of heaven. Right now, today, we breathe the atmosphere of heaven, because Jesus is with us. Even in this life, as we walk with God and live with God, we already have one foot Over the Rainbow. Over the Rainbow (especially the Iz version) is a great song because it’s about longing -- and everybody is longing for something. Indeed, we are all longing for something. In the end, that ‘something’ is the better place, the place of peace and joy. And the beautiful thing is: we can have it! We can have it without moving to a place on the constantly changing “Ten Best Places” list. We can have that ‘better place’ right here where we live. As Dorothy reminds us in the movie: If I ever go seeking my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Even though we live in this world, on this side of glory, where time goes by, we can also live over the rainbow -- because wherever Jesus is: there is Paradise! Something to ponder! Aloha blessings… Pastor Luke 1;37 3 Bible Study Opportunities: Revelation and 1 Peter Beginning on Sunday August 4th and Wednesday, August 7th, we started new Bible Studies! Sunday Mornings: The Book of Revelation. The book of Revelation is fascinating, confusing, interesting, terrifying, and hopeful. Many people have avoided studying this Book because they get confused by the symbolism and don't understand the order of events. Others have avoided studying the Book of Revelation because they are terrified of the events that take place in the Book and are fearful of the future. The Book of Revelation is also a book of tremendous hope. It is a story of the victory of Jesus over sin, death, and Satan. Although this study might sound, and look, frightening, it will be rewarding for all who desire to take part in it! Wednesday Mornings: The Book of 1st Peter. The Book of 1st Peter is addressed to the “elect resident exiles” scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. As we work through this wonderful Book, we will see how the author counsels (1) to steadfastness and perseverance under persecution; (2) to the practical duties of a holy life; (3) the example of Jesus and other motives to patience and holiness; and (4) to Pastors and people. Grab your Bible, and a friend, and join us for either one of these excellent Bible Study opportunities...or come to both! Many of the River of Life clients come in and receive showers, and fresh clean clothing as well as the small sizes of shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste etc. These items are things that homeless neglect buying when their more dire need is food. While in New York City I had the opportunity to see the newly-restored New York City Public Library with its grandiose architecture, murals, and world-class collection of books. Upon entering the main reading room I was stunned to see on display a copy of the Gutenberg Bible of circa 1450. The significance of this book, of course, is that it marked the beginning of books printed by movable type, a process that has been in place until the advent of the computer. I was personally thrilled by the surprise, because I had also seen the copy in the Library of Congress many years ago. Of the approximate 180 that were printed in the Fifteenth Century there are only about 45 in existence today. This picture shows the beginning of Saint Matthew on the right-hand page. The Good News is also available online at www.orlc-hawaii.org. 7 For your consideration - Videos on YouTube Through the good work and talent of Dr. Turro Wongkaren and Ms Sharilynn Shinno, three videos have been posted on YouTube: Two videos of Mr Poppe’s commissioning are now posted at: http://youtu.be/WCY7wJNlk8M http://youtu.be/v4s2kOLIDd0 Also a video of Pastor’s sermon on August 11 is now posted on youtube: http://youtu.be/5mHFJmMrBnQ Lutheran High School to add 6th Grade for 2013 -2014 School Year Lutheran High plans to add 6th grade in the fall of 2013. This means the school will range from 6th to 12th grade next year. Please keep them in your prayers. The Mega Free Car Wash You are encouraged to pledge or donate towards Lutheran High School of Hawaii’s 14th annual fund-raiser, the Mega Free Car Wash. Why is it free? All students strive to get pledges, ten cents or more, for each car washed at their assigned site (Our Redeemer, Our Savior or St. Mark). After the wash, students collect the amount pledged “times” the number of cars washed. Come by the upper parking lot between 9-3 (or visit Our Savior-Aiea or St. MarkKaneohe) on Saturday, September 21 and be a part of the count. You will help the scholarship fund, the individual classes (7th through 12th) and the athletic department by having your car washed (and dried) by the LHSH students. Invite your friends, colleagues, family members too. Thank you for your support. The Good News is also available online at www.orlc-hawaii.org. 2013 LCMS National Offering Every three years LCMS households, congregations and organizations are invited to participate in a synodwide gathering of financial gifts called the National Offering. Leading with a collection received in worship services during the 2013 Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod in St. Louis, this triennium’s National Offering gives participants five choices through which they can share Christ’s forgiveness and mercy both at home and abroad. It also affords LCMS congregations and their members an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to our life together as the world’s leading confessional Lutheran body. For the 2013-16 triennium, five gift designations cover a range of Witness, Mercy, Life Together efforts, all of which happen only with broad support from LCMS congregations and households.
