Several times a year, we also offer our Empower classes. These are
kidney education classes geared toward people with Chronic Kidney
disease who are not yet on dialysis.
People who attend these classes will learn how healthy kidneys
function, what causes kidneys to fail and how to slow down the
process of kidney failure and delay the need for dialysis.
Please feel free to stop by our clinic if you would like more information on dialysis or kidney disease. We are located in the Sandy
Plaza, next to Kmart and are open for operation Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The clinic is closed
Tuesday and Thursday. You may call 375-0644 or 765-7585. We
also encourage you to visit the DaVita website at www.davita.com.
There you will find a host of information on kidney disease, dialysis
options, diet information and recipes.

Grand Opening - Ribbon Cutting
The Cove is a socialization center for consumers of
mental health services in Jefferson and Clearfield
counties. They operate under Venango Training &
Developmental Center, a non-profit organization,
with a volunteer board of directors. They are located at 301 S. Brady Street in DuBois (across from
Scotty’s Donuts).
The Cove recently held its grand opening and ribbon
cutting. Shown from left to right are: Bill Mendat,
Colette Dushac, Ron Hanslovan, Judi Bowser, The
Cove manager, Suzanne Coder, and John Moore.
This month’s topic is “feel good advertising.” It seems to be a popular topic
during the summer months. Simply put…is advertising in yearbooks, on
placemats and calendars, on team shirts or programs, and donating auction
items a good way to advertise? My answer is “it’s a great way to show your
business cares about the community”. Service clubs, teams, special events
and worthwhile fund raisers count on donations from businesses to keep their
organizations financially sound. Everyone in business knows that there are
innumerable requests for this type of advertising. To tell you it’s not good
advertising would be detrimental to a lot of non-profit organization fund raising. To say it is good advertising would be unrealistic.
My reply to questions about “feel good advertising is always…remember
this…anytime your business’s name or logo is put before the public…it IS
advertising. Just be careful on how much you spend on “feel good” ads or
donations. Most local businesses want to support the schools, ball teams,
and other organizations. But don’t count on this advertising outlet to bring you
a lot of business. Perhaps a thank you or two is really all you should expect.
I strongly recommend you have a separate budget for “feel good” advertising
and stick to it. Don’t spend money from your annual advertising budget on
this type of advertising. Be aware of outside companies selling calendar,
place mats, map and public service advertising that doesn’t end up in local
coffers. Get all the details IN WRITING before you say “yes.” At least make
sure the money goes to local companies and organizations and not to a large
marketer in the mid West.
When you do spend some of your “feel good” advertising budget on ads,
make sure the expenditure is as worthwhile as possible. Use a recognizable
logo. If you don’t have one…get one. Include as little detail as possible.
And always ask for a proof of the ad. Always! A mistake in a publication or
something that is around for a long time is NOT a good thing.
It is a plus for any business to help out a non-profit organization with a “feel
good” ad or donation of product or services. Every person in business does it
to some extent or another. But donations like these should not eat up your
advertising budget to the point where you have no money left for ads that
translate into customers walking through your doors. And I would recommend
that you don’t spread all of your “feel good advertising” budget over dozens of
organizations. Perhaps “adopt” a couple local fund raisers and devote most
of your budget to them. That way you can say “we heavily support the Relay
For Life” or “Homecoming” or “local schools and service clubs.” It’s a nice
way to say NO to the others who try to dip into your feel good budget.
One more tip. When someone asks for something to sell at a fund raising
event or auction…don’t dust off something that’s been on the shelf for a long
time. Give them something that is a good reflection of your business. I’ve
emceed many events where it was obvious that the donated item was something that couldn’t be sold. And ALWAYS staple or tape a business card to
the items you donate.
If you have a question you’d like answered in a future column…or would like
information on how you can be a Stormer Agency client…email me
[email protected] or call my cell phone any time (814) 590-3968. I’d
love to hear from you!

Domtar’s DuBois Converting Center has been in operation since
January of 1992. It is part of Domtar Paper Co., LLC, the largest
producer of uncoated freesheet paper in North America and second
largest in the world based on production capacity. To the consumer,
that means that when you go to your local office supply store for
paper for your office or home, it’s quite possible that you’re buying
paper that was converted right here in DuBois.

butchers. Our freshly broiled and fried seafood selections are among the
finest in the world. We feature tomato herb tilapia, Chilean salmon, and
our own handmade premium lump crab cakes. All of our chicken entrees
are prepared using Hoss’s own special recipes from marinades and homestyle stuffing.
Our soups are made in-house from our soup chefs own scratch-style recipes, as are our vegetables, salads, and bread pudding. We strive to keep
our salad and fruit bar fresh, clean and nutritious. Here at Hoss’s we
never add chemical preservatives to our salad bar items.

your meal. There are no hidden charges for extras such as sour cream,
butter, gravy, fried onions, peppers, and cocktail, barbeque or cheese
sauces. Refills on coffee, soft drinks, and tea are … “on the Hoss.”
We feature a fun menu for kids, offer senior citizen pricing, and offer family-style banquets in our comfortable banquet rooms.

warm, inviting atmosphere. Hoss’s gift cards are a gift you’ll be proud to
give!!
If Your Group Needs To Raise Money, We Want To Help!
IT'S EASY! IT'S FUN!
Here's how it works:
 Hoss's will provide your organization tickets for you to distribute to your
various supporters.
 These patrons will bring the tickets when they come in to dine at Hoss's
on a prescheduled day of your choice (based on availability).
 Our servers will collect the tickets along with their guest check, and then
total all of the checks collected.
 Hoss's will then send your organization a check for 25% of the total
amount for sales of $1,200 or more --OR-- 20% of the total amount for
sales under $1,200.
Best of all:
 You sell nothing!
 It's easy to manage.
 Hoss's provides the tickets.
 One ticket is good for the entire party.
 Gift card sales during the event count too!
Downtown DuBois Matters
By Julie Stewart, Downtown Manager
Two years has gone by very quickly! It has been a pleasure reporting to you
on the progress and observations of the Revitalization Group. As most of
you know, we’ve been working at downtown revitalization for some time,
but officially opened our doors with a full-fledged, accredited program,
about two and a half years ago. I hope that what we’ve done as a downtown community has been noticeable and pleasing;
things such as façade improvements, the streetscape
project, improved window displays, several new
events, and more greenspace to name a few. Hundreds
of thousands of dollars of investment has already taken
place with more on the horizon. What you don’t see is
all the volunteer effort that makes this work, as well as
the workshops we hold, surveys we conduct, training we
undergo and the recruiting and economic development activities we’re involved in. I’ve been so encouraged by our progress downtown, I’m opening
my own coffee shop. Now, the torch has been passed to our new Manager,
Karen Vanderhoff; who will be an asset to the community with new creativity and expertise.
The Board and staff of the Downtown DuBois Revitalization Group thank you
all for supporting downtown DuBois!
