Brady Street Florist Business Spotlight Christian Student Fellowship of Penn State DuBois Christian Student Fellowship of Penn State DuBois is dedicated to engage students with God's message of hope in a troubled world. Their purpose is based on a heart felt pledge as commanded by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20 to mentor a generation of youth asking for help in understanding their world. Depending on which statistics one looks at, most say that about 87% of Christian students who grew up in church will leave the church altogether by their sophomore year of college. Statistics aside, all one has to do is look around on Sunday morning and notice the lack of younger generations joining for worship. Much of this decline can be attributed to the lack of spiritual support that students receive while in college. The true claims of Christianity have been and will continue to be debated in the marketplace of ideas: the classroom, the student union, the library, an apartment, and even a gym. Kyle Gordon, campus minister for Christian Student Fellowship, strives to help collegians balance all the disciplines of the Christian faith: worship, prayer, study, fasting, meditation, submission, simplicity, solitude and service. His specific purpose exists to serving the spiritual needs of students while also connecting with university staff, administration, and faculty. He also serves as a bridge between individuals in the community and churches who are interested in connecting with the campus for the purpose of reaching students who are looking for a church to their preferred place of worship in the community. Christian Student Fellowship is a nondenominational ministry. They focus on the fundamental beliefs of the Christian church and what C.S. Lewis coined, "mere Christianity" Every Monday at noon in room 204 of the DuBois Educational Foundation building at Penn State DuBois, Christian Student Fellowship holds a Bible study for students where they gather for worship, prayer, and a devotional from God's Word. They also hold weekly fellowship events such as movie nights, game nights, ice cream socials, pizza parties, and many other various activities. These activities are offered for the purpose of building relationships and offering a positive alternative to other college student customs. Students involved with Christian Student Fellowship have opportunities to be involved in several areas of community service, but perhaps their biggest opportunity is participating in the Spring Break Mission Trip. Every spring break, Christian Student Fellowship organizes and leads students to a different part of the country to offer their time and service to those that are less fortunate. In the past they have worked in the bayous of Mississippi during Katrina relief, helped teach Bible classes in the inner city schools of Miami, and worked on construction projects in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Other ministries they offer to the community include monthly prayer and worship services on the last Sunday of every month (with a few exceptions) in Hiller Auditorium at 7pm and services for traditional Christian holidays such as a Christmas service and their annual Easter Sunrise Service on Monument Hill. As a campus minister, Pastor Kyle is considered an affiliate staff; meaning he is recognized as a professional, but not an employee of the university. Christian Student Fellowship is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and relies on financial contributions from partners who believe in their mission and vision. Contributions are utilized to cover the salary and benefits of Pastor Kyle and his family. Contributors to the ministry share one important reward for their gifts: the personal satisfaction of making an investment in the lives of young men and women seeking answers to life's biggest questions. Each contribution demonstrates an individual's commitment to seeing Penn State DuBois permeated with the message of hope. The results of this commitment are visible, as students venture out into society with a Christian world and life view integrating their faith with their field of study. Pastor Kyle asks that you consider how you might contribute to his work through Christian Student Fellowship at Penn State DuBois as he helps mentor and disciple students in some of the most formative and testing times of their lives. As a graduate of Penn State DuBois and having grown up in the community, he understand the trials that students face and their need for support. If you would like to learn more or are interested in contributing to Christian Student Fellowship of Penn State DuBois, you can call him personally at (814)590-6519 or email [email protected]. There is always an open door for anyone who would like to learn more about the ministry. Central PA Regional Business & Industry Expo 2011 Thursday, November 3rd, from 1:30-6:30pm Bryce Jordan Center, State College Haven House Performing Hearts Fundraiser Friday, November 4th at 7:00 pm, DuBois Area Middle School. Tickets available at Rosie’s Book Shoppe, Catherine’s Cache and the Greater DuBois Chamber-$12 ea. Mystery Dinner Theater-Saturday, Nov. 5 DuBois Country Club (Shown here is an employee of D and T Construction putting some finishing touches on the window murals.) The Downtown DuBois Revitalization Group’s First Annual Fresh Paint Days Event was a remarkable success! Although there is still more work being completed on the building, the results so far are phenomenal. Goes to show what a difference a little paint and a lot of elbow grease can make! The murals were designed to reflect the history of Downtown DuBois by depicting scenes of what once may have been seen through these windows. As we researched the property, we found that it is recognized on the National Register of Historic Place, as part of the Downtown DuBois Historic District. Then we were surprised to read that it once had three stories and the DuBois Business College was on the second and third floors from 1926 to 1956. With this knowledge, the designs of some panels were geared specifically to honor its past as an educational facility. The Downtown DuBois Group would not have had success without the help of some great volunteers who stepped up and took on this project. We would like to thank volunteers from Tri-County Church, the DuBois Area Council on the Arts and DuBois Area High School. Also, we would like to thank employees from Paris Company, First Commonwealth Bank, Miller Brothers Furniture, Sunny 106 and the Northwest Industrial Resource Center for coming out as well. Businesses donating time and supplies were D.T. Construction, Randy Watson and Fox’s Pizza- Thank you!! This event was funded in part by a grant provided by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, PPG PITTSBURGH Paints and the Home Depot. PS- Remember to ‘Buy A Brick’ for placement around the kiosk in the Pershing Parking Lot to celebrate or remember … For more information, please call The Downtown Revitalization Group at 371-3064 or email them at [email protected] Marcellus Shale Forum: Opportunities and Answers for Pennsylvanians Complimentary Continental Breakfast 7:30am, DuBois Country Club.
