AUCTION SHOWCASING FAMED AND EMERGING ARTISTS
PRESENTING SPONSOR: BNY MELLON
PITTSBURGH, Pa., April 9, 2012 – Silver Eye Center for Photography presents its 2012
Benefit Auction and Brunch at Pittsburgh’s Clear Story Studio on Sunday, April 29, 2012, from
11am to 2pm. The event’s Presenting Sponsor is BNY Mellon. Eric C. Shiner, Director of The
Andy Warhol Museum is the Auction’s Honorary Chair and Elvira Eichleay and Brian Lang are
the Co-chairs. This year’s guest auctioneer is Sara Friedlander, Specialist, Post-War and
Contemporary Art, Christie’s, New York.
A Singular Event, Now In Its 7th Year
The 2012 biennial Auction features an extraordinary selection of vintage and contemporary work
representing a long list of illustrious talent — from revered masters and prominent mid-career
photographers to an exceptional group of young, emerging artists.
The photographers include: Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott, Olivo Barbieri, Edward Steichen,
Charles “Teenie” Harris, Edward McHugh, Scott Conarroe, David Stephenson, Duane Michals,
Carrie Schneider, Tim Davis, Martha Rial, Ed Panar, Paul Caponigro, Fran Forman, Henry
Simonds, Akihiko Miyoshi, Rebecca Sittler, Dylan Vitone, Daniel Kramer, Aaron Siskind,
Abelardo Morell, and Jonathan Lewis, to name but a few.
Before the live bidding begins, guests will partake in a delectable brunch from Chef Bob Sendall
of All in Good Taste Productions. Complimenting this delightful menu are selected wines from
local vintner (and well-known photographer) Duane Rieder of Engine House Twenty-Five and

signature cocktails from Boyd & Blair Vodka. New this year is a silent auction with an array of
items, from tickets to theatre and cultural events, to gift certificates for fine dining, Steelers
sports memorabilia, travel packages and much, much more.
Honoring Aaronel deRoy Gruber
A special highlight of the 2012 Auction is a tribute to the life and legacy of Aaronel deRoy
Gruber (1918-2011), a luminary in the field of photography and a generous patron of Silver Eye
Center for Photography and the arts in Pittsburgh.
Two vintage works by Aaronel deRoy Gruber are in the Auction, and they can be previewed,
along with other artwork and donated items at the Auction website,

Auction photographs will be on view at Silver Eye's gallery located at 1015 East Carson Street
on Pittsburgh's Southside. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6pm. Admission is
free and open to the public.

Ellen Fleurov, Silver Eye's Executive Director, and Brian Lang, Curator, Corporate Art
Collection, BNY Mellon, discuss the pleasures of collecting photography and highlight works in
the Auction. Many of the local artists whose work is showcased will also be present. Free but

About Silver Eye Center for Photography
Silver Eye Center for Photography is one of the few nonprofit venues in the country devoted
exclusively to contemporary photography and the only one of its kind in Pittsburgh and the
surrounding metropolitan region. Founded in 1985, Silver Eye’s mission is to broaden public
understanding of and engagement with today’s photography and its essential role in
contemporary culture. We also directly support and encourage the creative and professional
development of local and national artists through fellowships, exhibition opportunities, programs,
and other educational resources.
Silver Eye is located at 1015 East Carson Street on Pittsburgh’s historic Southside. Admission
is free. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, Noon to 6pm.
