Dreamers & Doers: Group aims to restore county’s oldest structure For many years hidden behind a veil of shrubbery and Spanish moss sat Citrus County’s oldest structure. Many people were not aware of the rich historical secret that sits adjacent to the Floral City Heritage Museum on Orange Avenue. Thankfully there were a few people who knew of this secret, they were bound and determined to one day acquire it for future generations. Frank Peters, Chairman of the Floral City Heritage Council and HD Bassett, Treasurer of the Duval Preservation Trust knew it was there. HD, a life long resident of Floral City is related to the original builder of the home William Duval. “I had actually never been inside the house until the Trust purchased it but my brother was good friends with the family who lived here for many years.” said Bassett. In late 2011 the Duval Preservation Trust Inc. was formed to acquire the Duval House from the Metz family who purchased it in the 1930’s. The Metz family lived there until the passing of Faye Metz in recent years. In March of 2012 the purchase and acquisition was complete. The Trust is about to mark its one year anniversary of owning the property. The Duval Preservation Trust works closely with the Floral City Heritage Council on this project, the Heritage Council offers volunteers who help with the restoration work. They also solicit donation on behalf of the Trust’s project. The home sits on 2 acres of land, the majority of it being lightly wooded. In theory the acreage of the property could be cleared and used to relocate other historical structures from the area. “For example, if a builder discovers an old building on a piece of property, rather than demolishing it, we could relocate it here to this property. If the organization can sustain it of course.” said Peters. The Duval House was built somewhere between 1863 and 1865. The Trust has some public records but unfortunately a fire at the Hernando County Clerk of Courts destroyed many original documents. In 1863 Citrus County was part of Hernando County. W.F. Duval built the house for his large family but within ten years he learned that he in fact did not build the home on his actual property. His property actually started a quarter of a mile further east on Orange Avenue. When he learned of this he immediately moved his family out to what has now become known as Duval Island, which was his property. A few other owners lived in the property before the Metz family purchased it in the 1930’s. The home is two stories tall. When originally built it would have had a detached kitchen, the kitchen is now attached and part of the home. In the late 1960’s the Metz family built a one bedroom addition on the northwest corner of the house. The Trust has plans to remove this addition to be able to fully restore the home to its original condition. The kitchen will be restored but will stay attached. Over the years the Metz family owned the home they made changes to the house, luckily though rather than demolishing parts of it they built on top of the original existing structure. This makes it much easier for the Trust to restore because all they are doing is removing drywall, floor covering and paint and discovering the original wood floors, brick work and walls. The second story of the home was little used by the Metz family and is in much better original condition. The home was filed with leftover remnants of life from the Metz family, the Trust has been able to pick through this and find some historical artifacts. The Duval Preservation Trust aims to fully restore the home to its original condition, but no timeline has been set for this as both the Trust and Heritage Council are entirely volunteer ran non profit organizations. Once restored the home could be used for weddings or other private events, in addition to being open for tours. “It is our ultimate goal to have this property and the Floral City Heritage Museum operates together even though separate organizations maintain them.” said Peters. The Duval House is steps from the museum so it would seem quite logical to have them co-managed. Of course, this would require a small army of dedicated volunteers. For only being one year into this massive undertaking, the Trust has made a large amount of progress. First they trimmed back all the shrubbery to reveal the home to passersby’s. Second they have done a large amount of the debris removal from the inside of the home. They have also done several test pieces around the house to see how many layers need to be removed to reveal the original structure. In December of 2012 they gave the first guided tours during Heritage Days. Anyone interested in donating time, money or materials to the cause is encouraged to contact the Floral City Heritage Council at [email protected] Page 5 Unique in Citrus: Explore the unique in Floral City When visiting Floral City there is a plethora of unique things to see and do. It is probably not possible to highlight each and every thing that makes Floral City unique, however if you have an afternoon and are willing to take a drive here is a brief list of things you should not miss: Pick some berries! Located a short drive outside of Floral City proper is D&J Blueberry Farm. This U-pick farm is operational during blueberry season which typically starts in April and ends in July depending on the weather. Picking your own berries is a family friendly activity and easy enough for people of all ages. Owner Donner Miller and her farm crew will be able to give you a quick lesson on the cultivation process of the blueberries. Have a fresh Strawberry Shake! One of the headpieces of Floral City is the bright orange and white roof of Ferris Groves storefront. Stop in for fresh local citrus and strawberries while in season. Home of its own breed of the popular red berry, the “Ferris Strawberry” is grown at Ferris Farms in Floral City. Hand picked and packed, the berries are available for purchase by the pint or flat. The store also offers Ferris beef products which are also raised locally. Jams, jellies, fresh squeezed orange juice and Amish cheeses are also available for purchase. Send citrus fruit to friends and relatives all over the world fresh from Ferris Groves. No visit to the store is complete without trying a homemade fresh strawberry milkshake, a slice of cheesecake with fresh strawberry topping or fresh strawberry shortcake. Take a step back in time! If you are in the area on a Friday or Saturday make a visit to the Floral City Heritage Museum & Country S t o r e . Open from 10:00am to 2:00pm e v e r y Friday and Saturday the Museum and County Store are one block off of Highway 41 on Orange Page 6 Avenue in the Floral City Library Complex. An array of exhibits take you back in time and tell the history of Floral City. Entrance to the museum is free of charge but donations are always accepted for the volunteer organization, Floral City Heritage Council, which runs the museum. Have a Cold One! A little over a mile north of the intersection of Highway 41 and Orange Avenue is the Wishing Stone Tavern. Built in the 1930’s as a watering hole for passersby’s the Wishing Stone is the oldest tavern in Citrus County. The Wishing Stone claims to serve the coldest beer around and gauging by the steady stream of locals and tourists it seems to be a sure bet that it does. Urban legend claims that there was a large limestone rock on the premises and customers could gain good luck by rubbing the stone, while the stone has long since been removed from the property it still remains a popular place. The Wishing Stone opens at 11:00am daily. Plantation Rentals has a variety of homes available to suit your rental needs! Each issue will feature a different non-profit that is active in our community. If you have suggestions of non-profits to feature, email your idea to [email protected] In 2010 many of the key players and business leaders in Floral City decided it was time to start marketing their slice of heaven in a more formal way. By the end of the year the Floral City Merchants Association was formed. Now only a few years after its inception the organization has played a key role in bringing more events and awareness of local offerings to the small quaint town. The mission of the FCMA is to preserve, protect, promote and enhance the rural and historic nature of Floral City and the surrounding area through the expansion of the economic engines which support it and to embrace all that makes it unique. By hosting a variety of new events in the area and strengthening partnerships with other key local organizations it is obvious that the FCMA is living up to its mission. With approximately 50 business members the FCMA puts on several events each year. In October the FCMA holds the Bikes & BBQ Cook Off, this event runs in conjunction with the Clean Air Bicycle ride down the Withlacoochee Trail that runs straight through the heart of Floral City. In November the FCMA contributes to the Luminary Art Walk. In December the play host to Santa on the Square, a fun family friendly event. For the second year the FMCA is a co-sponsor of Berries, Brew, & BBQ which is the official kick off party to the Floral City Strawberry Festival which is held in Floral Park each March. This event brings residents from all over the county to see the charm and beauty of downtown Floral City which they often by pass on the way to the festival. The FCMA works closely with the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, the Citrus County Visitors & Convention Bureau, the Floral City Heritage Council and the Citrus County Agriculture Alliance. The FMCA reached out to these key organizations to help them strengthen their voice within the community. Currently Dudley Calfee of Ferris Groves is President of the FCMA. “I am very pleased. We are lucky to have such a dedicated, hard working group of Members of the Floral City Merchant’s Association. They have made great strides to put Floral City on the map.” he said recently. Plans are well underway to continue to expand and improve the current events produced by the association as well as possibly add a few more throughout the year. Calfee, whose wife Diane is a talented local photographer, said that “I have never seen such a hard working, dedicated group of volunteer business people and community leaders like we are blessed with in Floral City. It makes the work of promoting our town much easier when you have such enthusiastic and energetic people to share the work and spread the message. And, of course, I dearly love Floral City and want other people to experience the hospitality and sense of community that we all enjoy here.” The FCMA meets on the third Monday of the month at the Floral City Heritage Museum. Membership to the organization is an annual $50.00 dues fee. The gallery opened three years ago, but is marking its one year anniversary of being located in the Knight House. The Knight House was purchased by Ann Covington who is president of the cooperative group which currently includes over 40 member artists. Covington, along with her husband purchased the property to house the gallery because, “it seemed like the right thing to do, we have a great love of the arts and the heritage of the area and we want to continue to support it.” Covington is a talented artist who dabbles in many forms of media; she painted the 48 foot long mural on the side of the hardware store in the heart of Historic Floral City. The gallery is one of the true galleries in the area where visitors can view a large range of artworks. With 40 member artists the mediums vary greatly. Award winning photographers’ display works next to hand painted Faberge eggs. Watercolors, oil and acrylic paintings, etched glass, pottery, jewelry, hand tooled leather and mixed media pieces are only a small representation of what may be on display at the gallery. The gallery is always accepting new artists, monthly the member artists gather to jury potential new artist’s works. While many of the member artists are longtime local residents, others come from all over. Jude Cahorn is a snowbird from Canada who resides in Homosassa. “It has been the gallery for me that brought my focus to Floral City.” she said. Cahorn specializes in experimental watercolor paintings. In November of 2012 the gallery opened a café in the back rooms of the house. The café serves lunch featuring an array of unique sandwiches, salads, quiches and daily specials. Along with display works of art the gallery holds special events and art education classes through the month. The gallery is open from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily; the café is open the same hours. Further information on the gallery can be found on their website, www.floridaartistsgallery.com. Located right on Orange Avenue the Shamrock Inn has been a Floral City staple since 1974. Taken over by Wolfgang “Wolfy” Schwickerath in the summer of 2000, the Shamrock serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. As boasted by Wolfy, the menu features American cuisine sprinkled with traditional German specialties. So many delicious offerings are available at the Shamrock it is hard to determine a crowd favorite; however their wings and 96 ounce beers are very popular. Locals from around the area have created a tradition of consuming one of the 96 ounce beers, affectionately dubbed a “yard beer”, on their birthday. The breakfast menu boasts traditional eggs, pancakes and assorted breakfast meats. Omelets and skillets are also available. Homemade corned beef hash served with eggs is something not to miss out on. The lunch and dinner menu offers a variety of sandwiches, burgers, steaks and salads. The daily features, often traditional German dishes, are always a hit with customers. Homemade meatloaf served with mashed potatoes and fresh gravy, Jagerschnitzel and homemade German Rouladen are all served throughout the week. On Thursday’s you can try the Wolfy Burger which is a beef burger topped with sauerkraut, corned beef hash, Swiss cheese and 1000 Island dressing. Albeit difficult, it is highly recommended to save room for dessert. Key Lime Pie, fresh cheesecakes and a decadent Reese’s Peanut Butter Pie are a few off the choices available on a rotating basis. The Shamrock serves beer and wine, traditional German beers are available such as Flensburger Gold and Jager Pils. On top of serving breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week, the Shamrock offers entertainment as well. On Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays patrons can participate in karaoke. Every Saturday a saxophone player serenades the dinner crowd. Special occasions, such as St. Patrick’s Day, you may encounter bagpipe players. Diners may notice an increase in the quality of the food at the Shamrock. Wolfy recently brought in a new chef who is influencing the menu. “My new chef is wonderful and makes all the sauces from scratch, I bring fine dining now to Floral City without increasing the prices on the menu.” said Wolfy. Be it the food, friendly service, daily specials or entertainment offerings the Shamrock will prove to be a good time on your visit to Floral City.
